Navy investigating death of 19-year-old seaman apprentice at Naval Station Great Lakes

Naval authorities are investigating the death of a service member who was found dead earlier this month at the Great Lakes base, the Lake County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.

The coroner identified the service member as Joshua Jones, 19. The Florida native was stationed at the base, authorities said.

Emergency personnel responded to a call for medical assistance at about 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 8 and found Jones unresponsive in a barracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner’s office performed an autopsy Monday, but results are pending further toxicology reports.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is leading the investigation into the death.

The Navy said Jones was a seaman apprentice and a student at the Surface Combat Training Command.

“The Navy mourns the loss of our shipmate and sends condolences to the sailor’s family, friends, and fellow sailors during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Lane Bryant documentary’s attack on Tinley Park police raises questions

Eighteen years after five women were shot and killed in a Tinley Park Lane Bryant store, more than 50 people sat in a theater just seven miles down the road from the store Friday to watch a reenactment of the unsolved killings.

The reenactment was part of a documentary on the shootings, entitled “Who Killed These Women,” that debuted Friday at some theaters including Marcus Orland Park Cinema.

Charlie Minn, the filmmaker and also the former producer for “America’s Most Wanted,” called the Tinley Park police “aloof” in the film and said police are holding information from the public to a fault, sparking pushback from police and village officials.

Minn said he hoped the documentary would spark renewed interest in the murders and lead to answers.

He said Tuesday he believes social media will solve the case but said people need substantive information to help. He said the fact that Tinley police did not participate in the film hurt it.

“They don’t have to like me,” he said. “This is about solving the case. This is about results.”

In the film, a statement attributed to the Tinley Park police read that Minn’s previous work in an “America’s Most Wanted” segment brought in a lot of unhelpful tips that pulled police away “from meaningful, focused work on the case.”

“That experience has made us extremely cautious about any media involvement,” the statement read.

But Tinley Park Village Administrator Pat Carr said Tuesday village officials did not release a public statement to Minn. He said he can not comment because he had not seen the statement.

The statement was included in an email Minn provided to the Daily Southtown he said was from a Tinley Park police detective.

Minn was to speak about the documentary a few weeks ago at area high schools, but his appearances were canceled apparently because of concern about disparaging the police.

Filmgoers have both praised and criticized the film, which in addition to the reenactment included interviews with family members of some victims, paramedics who responded to the shootings, Lane Bryant employees and a few experts.

More than 1,000 tickets were sold across four theaters in the Chicago area through Sunday, with 467 tickets sold at the Crestwood AMC theater, according to emails from theater general managers to the filmmaker Charlie Minn.

The film was shown in Crestwood, New Lenox, Orland Park and Chicago’s River East.

Several moviegoers at the Orland Park theater said Friday they felt the film unfairly blamed Tinley Park police and the one surviving victim for the case being unsolved.

Other people at that screening said the film inspired them to learn more about the case. They said they would like the Tinley Park Police Department to share more details about the case.

“Why would they not allow to be interviewed?” asked Karin Hanson, of Oak Forest. “It’s very suspicious.”

Wilma Swanson, of Peotone, called herself and her friends “granny crime solvers” and said she believes the case is solvable. She said the information from the film gave her new theories about the case, which she said she would like to discuss on a Facebook page or online chat space.

Swanson said she attended because she remembers when she heard about the shootings in 2008, and said she used to shop at the Lane Bryant store.

Carol Betley, a more than 30-year resident of Tinley Park, said she was shopping in the Target across the parking lot from the Lane Bryant store Feb. 2, 2008, the morning of the shootings.

She said she saw the film because she hoped to find more answers about the unsolved case. She said she wondered why the robbery took place in the morning in a store with little cash on hand.

Michelle Klein, of Mokena, said she learned several new details about the case from the film, such as the shooter allegedly being in the Lane Bryant store for 40 minutes before fleeing.

Kristin Siville, who attended with her mother, said she and other residents still have a heightened awareness when shopping at stores in Brookside Marketplace, where Lane Bryant was located.

Siville also said she was angry about speculation in the film that the shooter might be dead, because she said this could mean the victims and public might never receive answers.

Debbie Melchert, a Tinley Park resident, said the film included “constant bashing” of the Tinley Park police because they would not talk with the director or release new details. She said she did not appreciate this and wanted to know why details would be given on a still active investigation.

She said she appreciated that a victim’s brothers refused to blame anyone but the killer, even when asked seemingly “baited questions to bad mouth the Police Department and the investigation as a whole.”

Minn said since the film’s debut, he has received a lot of tips and information on the case, which he said he forwarded to Tinley Park Police and the FBI.

Minn also hosted an event Monday outside the T.J. Maxx store along West 191st Street, where the Lane Bryant store once stood. He recommended the Federal Bureau of Investigations become more involved and said the $100,000 reward for information on the killer might be raised.

Escalation: Iran, Russia, China To Hold Naval Drill In Flashpoint Strait Of Hormuz

Escalation: Iran, Russia, China To Hold Naval Drill In Flashpoint Strait Of Hormuz

Are Russia and China finally standing up to America’s addiction to regime change wars in the Middle East? They appear to at least be flashing some muscle in this incredibly tense moment, as the US deploys no less than two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers to the region.

Russia, China, and Iran have deployed naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz for joint exercises this week, Russian presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev announced Tuesday, according to Anadolu and Iran state media. This comes as Iran’s elite IRGC Navy is already in day two of military drills in the vital oil transit point, having closed some sectors of the chokepoint.

Mehr News

In a fresh interview with Turkish media, Patrushev said Moscow is advancing a “multipolar world order on the oceans” to counter what he blasted as Western hegemony.

“We will tap into the potential of BRICS, which should now be given a full-fledged strategic maritime dimension,” he said. These fresh mid-February drills are being called Maritime Security Belt 2026.

It turns out Russian and Chinese warships have already been in the region as part of prior Iran-hosted drills, and without doubt they’ve lingered to keep a very close eye on developments after President Trump started threatening Tehran over its nuclear as well as ballistic missiles programs.

Also coming off last month’s BRICS naval drills in South Africa which were dubbed “Will for Peace 2026” – Chinese, Russian, and Iranian ships have in recent years showed deepened coordination and cooperation, in an increased number of joint drills.

“The Maritime Security Belt 2026 exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, where Russia, China, and Iran sent their ships, proved to be relevant,” he added.

If the US were to launch a ‘surprise’ attack on Iran, it remains unlikely that either Russia or China would come to Tehran’s direct aid and engage militarily with Washington.

However, it’s possible more Chinese and Russian ships would be sent to patrol flashpoint waters, making things more delicate and difficult in terms of US Navy maneuvering and firing.

Likely Moscow and Beijing would team up to issue a UN Security Council condemnation, and would seek to rally the globe against another Iraq-style war in the Middle East, with likely disastrous consequences for the whole region.

The second round of Iran-US talks wrapped up Tuesday in Geneva with mixed results. The Iranians have said the sides could be headed toward a new deal, and yet diplomats have admitted it was a heavy, and not very positive or amicable atmosphere. So things remain ultra-tense and charged, to say the least.

The Crowdsourcing Of Cutting Waste & Fraud

The Crowdsourcing Of Cutting Waste & Fraud

Authored by Jeffrey Tucker via The Epoch Times,

The Trump administration came into office with a pledge to uproot waste, fraud, and abuse within the government’s system of transfer payments. Leading the charge would be Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

They began their work early on with earnest and passion, starting inauguration evening, with many long days and nights of data crunching and number slinging, under the assumption that auditing government would be similar to auditing a private company.

DOGE quickly found itself buried and overwhelmed. There were too many programs, too much leakage, no coordination between departments, strange sources of incoming and outgoing payments, shadowy institutions and names flying everywhere, and eye-popping levels of inefficiency. It became obvious that many decades had gone by without any scrupulous concern for how taxpayer dollars were used.

After months on the job, DOGE backed away from the big picture job and embedded itself in specific agencies with more focus and less in the way of press releases. Elon went back to his enterprises which had been suffering with his absence and distractions. Meanwhile, his small cadre of data mavens stayed on and got to work, agency by agency.

This much became clear: the job was too much for them. They had to prioritize their work. It was decided that the most important priority would be to sync up the many random databases strewn here and there and everywhere into large packages that were manageable and could be checked, with lines of spending matching sources and purposes. Nothing like this existed before.

Once that was done, it became clear that the datasets were too large for a team of workers. They needed to open source all the data and enlist help from the public. In essence, the problems were just too big to isolate problem spending from legitimate spending. The decision was made to bundle it all up and do waves of file dumps on the public.

After all, we live in the age of the citizen researcher, people with fast Internet connections, large machines, high degrees of skill, and a passion to discover. For too long, the affairs of government have lived in a cloud of secrecy, probably for one hundred years or more. The excuse has always been discretion: It wasn’t the public’s business how the money was spent. But this is ridiculous; we are talking about taxpayer dollars. The citizens do in fact have the right to know. The goal of bringing all this out into the open would represent a fundamental change in the operation of public policy.

The most elaborate installation yet was just posted on the website of the Department of Health and Human Services, with a focus on Medicaid. This is a program designed to provide needed services to the poor. Annual spending exceeds $1 trillion a year, having entered into new upward slopes of spending in the COVID era where government unleashed the printing presses and spent money as if it were in infinite supply. This one program now accounts for 18 percent of U.S. health care expenditures.

Exactly where is all this going?

We now have a tool that helps show what is happening.

HHS has provided a full .ZIP file that anyone can download and examine. Nothing like this has ever happened in the history of the U.S. government or probably any government. It has also given us sample visualizations to help citizens understand the fullness of what is going on.

This effort has also involved Scott Bessent at the Department of Treasury. He has announced that anyone who can find fraud and submit the evidence to the website will be given 10 to 30 percent of the fines imposed on the receiving individual or organization. This means giving rewards to intrepid researchers who can find and prove fraud in the program. The efforts will take months or years, simply because there is so much of it.

Elon Musk and others have given low estimates of 5 to 10 percent of fraudulent Medicaid spending over the last 10 years, while others say the number is closer to 20 and 30 percent. Figures like $1 trillion are being thrown around as possible numbers on how much has been lost. They could be much higher. As we discovered in the Minnesota case, the fraud can be brazen and undisguised or it can be surreptitious and shape-shifting in order to avoid detection.

There are many features of this effort that are fascinating. To my knowledge, this is the first time that a strategy like this has been deployed to clear up the welfare state. It’s probably the largest data dump by government in history. The strategy of enlisting citizen researchers is also new and very brilliant, recalling bounty hunters of the Old West. People are talented and care deeply. Why not use that energy to clean up public spending?

The single most striking feature of this data release is that it was covered nowhere in the mainstream press. You might have thought otherwise—that the nation’s press would be all over this—but not so. I kept looking for the headline but they were nowhere to be seen apart from The Epoch Times, Townhall, and a few other venues. There is no question that mainstream media is quite anxious to bury the news. If not for Elon’s X social media app, and The Epoch Times, hardly anyone would even know about this!

What’s most fascinating about this is what it reveals about the politics and culture of major media operations. You might think that even left-liberals would be on board with rooting out corruption and abuse within government programs, if only to shore up public confidence in their operations. But, again, as we saw in Minnesota, the dedication from elite circles to silencing all public knowledge of how their money is actually being used seems to be an essential part of their messaging priorities. As a result, one of the most spectacular moves in history to clean up the operations of government has gotten almost no attention outside alternative venues.

In the bigger picture, the challenge that the Trump administration took on is larger and grander than anyone knew. The second term hit following the largest explosion of government spending ever recorded, with some $6 trillion -$8 trillion added in the name of public health in a few short years. Overall, total cumulative spending added across the years 2020 to 2025 totals roughly $33 trillion –$34 trillion.

I’m profoundly aware that no human mind can even conceive of numbers on that scale. They are simply incomprehensible. Remember too that government has no resources of its own; whatever it has to spend is taken from the public in one form or another: taxes, inflation, or debt paid by future generations. In essence, what we have seen over these years has set new records for profligacy.

I noted that after the first few months of DOGE’s work in 2025, a kind of demoralization set in. The problem they had sworn to tackle was just too big for even a great team of researchers. DOGE and the Trump administration deserve maximum credit for their persistence and coming up with a plausible strategy for achieving the goal. It’s a start, in any case, and sets a mighty precedent for the future.

Actor Shia LaBeouf arrested after alleged fight during Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Actor Shia LaBeouf has been arrested after being accused of hitting two men early Tuesday morning during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, police said.

LaBeouf was charged with two counts of simple battery, New Orleans police said in a statement.

Officers were called to a business around the French Quarter at about 12:45 a.m. after allegedly “causing a disturbance and becoming increasingly aggressive” inside, police said. Police did not say what type of business it was.

An employee tried to remove LaBeouf and once outside, the actor allegedly hit a man “multiple times with closed fists,” police said.

Witnesses told police that LaBeouf left the area but later returned and continued to act aggressively.

“Multiple individuals attempted to restrain him, releasing him in hopes he would leave,” police said.

The man who was first allegedly hit by LaBeouf told police the actor hit him again. Another man told officers that LaBeouf also allegedly punched him in the nose.

“He was held down until officers arrived,” police said.

LaBeouf was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries and after being released, he was arrested and taken into custody by police.

Court and jail records did not list an attorney who could speak on behalf of LaBeouf. Emails to LaBeouf’s publicists were not immediately returned.

LaBeouf has had several run-ins with the law during his career, including an early 2017 New York arrest for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct that was captured on a livestream video. He was sent to court-mandated rehabilitation.

Later that summer, he was arrested in Georgia for public drunkenness and accused of disorderly conduct and obstruction, when he was on location filming “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” and sentenced to probation. In 2020, he was charged with misdemeanor battery and petty theft in Los Angeles.

That year, the English singer and actor FKA Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, also filed a lawsuit alleging LaBeouf was physically and emotionally abusive to her during their relationship, which they settled in July.

Barnett said LaBeouf put her in a constant state of fear and humiliation, once slammed her into a car, tried to strangle her and knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease.

LaBeouf apologized in a statement after the lawsuit was filed. He also denied the accusations in the lawsuit in a 2021 filing, saying any injuries done or damages incurred by Barnett were not his doing.

The 39-year-old first gained acclaim as a child for his role on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens,” and continued working steadily into adulthood. He is perhaps best known for his roles in 2007′s “Transformers” and in 2008′s “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.”

LaBeouf shares a daughter, born in 2022, with actor Mia Goth.

Police in Nancy Guthrie investigation say glove DNA didn’t match anything in national database

DNA from gloves found a few miles from the Arizona home of Nancy Guthrie did not match any entries in a national database, authorities said Tuesday, the 17th day of her disappearance.

“There were no DNA hits in CODIS,” the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said, referring to the national Combined DNA Index System.

“At this point, there have been no confirmed CODIS matches in this investigation,” the department said, suggesting that other DNA samples had been put through the system.

CODIS is a valuable storehouse of DNA taken from crime suspects or people with convictions. Any hits could identify possible suspects in Guthrie’s disappearance.

The 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie was reported missing from her Tucson-area home on Feb. 1 after spending the previous night with family, police said. Her blood was detected on the porch.

A porch camera recorded video of a man with a backpack who was wearing a ski mask, long pants, a jacket and gloves. The FBI said the suspect is about 5 feet, 9 inches (1.75 meters) tall with a medium build.

Gloves were found approximately 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from Guthrie’s home. The FBI has said that the gloves appeared to match those worn by the man in the video.

“There is additional DNA evidence that was found at the residence, and that is also being analyzed,” the sheriff’s department said.

In addition, the department said investigators are working with a manufacturer and experts to try to locate Guthrie by detecting her heart pacemaker. News media reported that a “signal sniffer” device has been attached to low-flying aircraft.

Savannah Guthrie posted an Instagram video Sunday in which she issued an appeal to anyone with information about what happened to her mother.

“It is never too late to do the right thing,” she said. “And we are here. And we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, that it’s never too late.”

Aurora launches program offering expanded financial assistance to homebuyers

Aurora will soon be offering those looking to buy a home within city limits up to $26,000 in grants and loans towards the purchase.

The Choose Aurora Homebuyer Assistance Program looks to help make the homebuying process more affordable and to attract new residents to the city, city officials announced in a news release on Monday evening. The Aurora City Council approved the creation of the program last September.

“Choose Aurora is a great way to make the homebuying process more affordable for both current residents and those who look to move into the city,” Chris Ragona, Aurora director of community services, said in the city’s news release. “We are excited to launch the program and to help more individuals make Aurora their home.”

To qualify, those looking to buy a home would need to meet certain income requirements, be looking to purchase a house affordable for their level of income and be willing to go through a homebuyer education course, which the city would pay for.

Specifically, a household would need to make no more than 120% of the area’s median income, which city officials previously said was about $144,000 per year for a family of four, to qualify for the program.

But, the program will set aside some of its allocated funds specifically for those making at most 80% of the area’s median income, or roughly $96,000 per year for a family of four, to make sure money is always available for likely first-time homebuyers, officials have said.

The purchase of existing and newly-constructed houses, townhouses and condos within city limits are all eligible for the program, the city’s recent news release said.

Before they can apply, homebuyers must pre-qualify for a 30-year fixed FHA or Conventional Mortgage Loan and have their purchase offer accepted, according to the news release. Officials said that the application process will take about four weeks before the anticipated closing date.

Once accepted into the program, homebuyers can get up to $20,000 through a no-interest deferred loan, up to a $5,000 grant to pay for closing costs and up to a $2,000 grant for minor repairs needed to the home, the news release said. That no-interest deferred loan wouldn’t need to be paid back until the house is sold or until it is no longer the person’s primary residence, city officials have previously said.

Those looking for more information about the program can visit its page on the city of Aurora’s website: www.aurora.il.us/ChooseAurora

City officials have said that funding for the new program, which in total was approved by the Aurora City Council at $650,000, will come from a mix of sources.

Some of those funds are set to come from the federal government through the Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership funds, while some would also come from the recently-created Aurora Affordable Housing Fund.

Aurora previously had a down payment assistance program, but it offered only up to $5,000 in grants and had much stricter requirements on who qualified. That program had so few applications, city officials have said, that it was nearly shut down.

The announcement of the city’s newly-improved program comes a few months after MRI Software named Aurora the second-best city in America to move to.

That company’s Move-In Magnet Index analyzed job opportunities, cost of living and safety data to find “hidden hotspots where people are finding better balance, booming economies and space to breathe,” according to MRI Software’s news release from November.

Other top cities included Nashua, New Hampshire; Cleveland, Ohio; and Dover, Delaware.

“This year’s index shows a clear shift toward smaller, safer and more affordable cities,” Cederick Johnson of MRI Software said in the company’s news release. “Places like Nashua, Dover and Aurora are thriving because they offer more than economic opportunity they deliver a lifestyle balance that major metros can’t match.”

In particular, the press release noted that Aurora had the highest number of jobs among the top cities, alongside one of the lowest costs of living.

Heidi Stevens: Letters show how a Disney dream vacation became part of America’s immigration nightmare

Like all parents, I like to make my kids happy. I didn’t have a lot growing up, and I now have plenty of resources, so when my three boys (5, 10 and 12) want something, my wife and I like to get it for them. Whether it’s a gumball at the mall, or a video game or a motor scooter, or whatever, it’s easy for us to provide our kids with the things they ask for. However, I think that they are not very grateful, and they often immediately tire of playing with most of the things that we buy them. Should there be a shift in how I deal with the giving of gifts?

Answer: You have this very backward. The red flag went up with your very first sentence.

When you give your kids material objects, you are not making them happy. You are merely gratifying them, and there is a world of difference.

Gratification is simply satisfying a desire. That’s all you’re doing: Your 5-year-old desires a gumball, you satisfy his desire for a gumball. Your 10-year-old desires a video game, you satisfy his desire for a video game. Your 12-year-old desires a motor scooter, you satisfy his desire for a motor scooter.

Gratification is fleeting for humans. Don’t believe me? Try eating one potato chip.

How do you actually make your kids happy?

Bad news: You can’t. Parents can’t make their kids happy. That’s not how this life works.

The irony is that parents like you who think they are making their kids happy, when they are really just gratifying them, tend to make their kids less happy over time.

It’s for the same reason that eating that one potato chip doesn’t make you happy–gratification always goes away. This exposes a life truth: We can never get enough of what we don’t need.

Here’s the good news. You can do something that can get your kids closer to happiness. Instead of trying to gratify them, you can set them up to experience gratitude. When a person experiences gratitude, they increase their dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin levels, giving them something approximating a good, safe and loved feeling. You cannot be grateful and angry at the same time.

Here’s how you can get your kids to feel more gratitude:

1. Give Less: It’s very difficult to feel grateful for things when you already have pretty much everything. Stop buying stuff for your kids when they ask for it. This will have the added benefit of teaching your kids an important life lesson that I can guarantee you they have not yet learned. That lesson is simply that you don’t always get what you want. Here’s how I would do that with your kids.

Kid Whisperer: Hey, gents. I am so sorry. I’ve been thinking about how when your mom and I buy you things, we want you to be grateful. After thinking long and hard about this, I feel like we have been bombarding you with stuff your whole lives by basically giving you everything you have ever wanted. A really wise person told me that it’s hard for kids to feel grateful when they already have pretty much everything that they want. So, I’m sorry about that. From now on, we’re only going to buy you presents on your birthdays and on (enter gift-giving religious holiday(s) here, if applicable). Other than that, we’ll buy you the food and clothes necessary to keep you fed and warm. Thanks for understanding. Your new lives begin now.

2. Require the Practice of Gratitude: Only allow your kids to have and keep things that are given when they say “thank you.” Simply saying these words can make people feel better, and training your kids to say them will have permanently positive effects on their mental well-being. Again, here’s how to do it in an everyday scenario:

Kid: Could you pass the salt, please?

Kid Whisperer hands the salt to Kid, but does not let go of the salt.

Kid looks at Kid Whisperer.

Kid Whisperer smiles at Kid.

Kid: Thank you.

Kid Whisperer releases salt.

Requiring this simple gratitude practice will not only make your kids feel better, but over time, they will generalize this behavior because they will enjoy the feeling that dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin bring. They will develop a healthy tendency to want to be grateful. This is far better than their current addiction to getting more and more material possessions.

I suppose it’s just a side benefit that, through this process, you will also be training your kids to be pleasant people who others want to be around!
