Si Koo Kim lidera en American Express; Scheffler y el joven Blades Brown a un golpe

Freshman Keaton Wagler’s record 46-point game has No. 11 Illinois thinking big after 88-82 upset of No. 4 Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — When Illinois freshman Keaton Wagler walked into the visiting locker room at Purdue on Saturday night, he was met with a blinding spray of water from his ecstatic teammates.
Wagler said he was hyped. But Illini forward David Mirković swears even then — as Wagler celebrated the greatest individual performance by an opponent at Mackey Arena — that the guard was calm and collected.
“He was just cold,” Mirković said. “That’s what he is. He plays cold, chill.”
For months now, coach Brad Underwood has praised Wagler for his maturity and ability to be unfazed by the moment as he has stepped up in his first season to lead the No. 11 Illini. On Saturday night in Illinois’ biggest win of the season, Wagler again showed it.
Wagler scored an Illinois freshman record 46 points on 13-for-17 shooting to help knock off No. 4 Purdue 88-82. He hit nine 3-pointers — also an Illinois record — and 11 of 13 free throws. It was the most points scored in a road win over a Top 10 opponent in AP Poll history, according to the Illini.
Underwood said the performance “was like nothing I’ve seen in my 39 years, especially in a Top 5 or Top 10 matchup.” Wagler scored Illinois’ first 14 points, had 24 by halftime and then coolly helped the Illini close out the game with a jumper and two free throws in the final 18 seconds.
“But that’s the beauty of Keaton,” Underwood said. “The one impressive thing is he takes the emotion out of it in a venue with 15,000 people — all against him — and he just plays. He just took what the game gave him.”
It was Illinois’ ninth straight win and its first road win over a Top 5 team since March 2, 2021, at No. 2 Michigan. Underwood also notched his 100th Big Ten victory as Illinois coach.
The Illini have had important wins against ranked teams this season — against then-No. 11 Texas Tech in November, then-No. 13 Tennessee in December and then-No. 19 Iowa earlier this month. But none was this big — at the home of a Purdue team that was ranked No. 1 in the preseason and is led by all-Big Ten returnees Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn.
Illinois did it in its second game without veteran guard Kylan Boswell, who suffered a fractured right hand in practice Monday and is out until mid-February.

“The ceiling is national championship,” Wagler said. “That’s our goal. That’s been our goal since the beginning, and this just proves we’re a contender for that.”
Wagler’s play is a big reason why.
Wagler said the most he ever scored in a high school game playing for Shawnee Mission Northwest in Kansas was 32 points in a tournament in Quincy, Ill. He had a previous high of 23 with Illinois at Ohio State.
In the Illini’s win Wednesday against Maryland, he had just 13 points on 4-for-12 shooting.
“It didn’t really affect me,” Wagler said of the previous outing. “I know how good of a shooter I am. I came in here with confidence knowing we were a player down. I needed to step up against Purdue. It’s super hard to win here, and I just came in here playing confident and let what happens happen.”
Wagler made four straight 3-pointers on his 14-point run to start the game and added another two before halftime, several well beyond the arc.

“Shooting stepback 3s from 4 or 5 feet behind the line and making them? Props to him,” Purdue center Oscar Cluff said.
Illinois needed the performance to combat the Boilermakers, who shot 63% in the first half and 13 minutes into the game had made 77% of their field-goal attempts.
Smith, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, was directing it all, niftily throwing no-look passes to total eight points and seven assists in the half. At one point, after the Illini had cut their deficit to six points, Smith had a steal and threw behind his back to C.J. Cox for a fast-break layup.
Purdue led 43-39 at halftime after a Wagler 3-pointer. But the Boilermakers missed their first three shots of the second half to help Illinois pull to a 46-43 advantage. Wagler had a 3-pointer and a fadeaway and Jake Davis added a rebound and a basket for the lead.
It was a back-and-forth game from there.
Illinois took the lead for good during a stretch of four straight 3-pointers from players other than Wagler. Tomislav Ivišić had two, Davis one and Mirković another as the Illini went up 82-77.

But Wagler even had an impact on those 3s with two of his four assists, including a cross-court pass to Davis, who knocked it down with the shot clock expiring.
“He’s so gifted at everything,” Davis said. “He’s a great scorer. He’s a great passer. But one of his most valuable traits is he makes the right decision all the time.”
Davis had eight points and two assists. Mirković finished with 12 points and eight rebounds as Illinois outrebounded Purdue 33-19.

Mirković played despite twisting his ankle in practice Friday. He said he slept only four or five hours because of the pain and was having trouble walking to breakfast.
“Coach came to me at breakfast and said, ‘Adrenaline is the best drug,’” Mirković said. “‘And when you come out there and see 14,000 drunk fans cussing at you, you’re going to be good.’ And it was like that. When I came on the court, my ankle just stopped hurting me.”
Smith led Purdue with 27 points — including a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final minute — and 12 assists.
Underwood attended his postgame news conference with a towel around his neck after the water-infused locker-room celebration.
“The locker room was trashed,” Davis said. “We did our best to clean it up, but it was trashed.”
And unlike Mirković, Davis saw some of Wagler’s stoicism melt away with the revelry.
“He was lit in the locker room,” Davis said. “He was yelling a lot.”

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved an $838.7 billion fiscal 2026 defense spending bill, moving one of the largest appropriations measures in US history toward final passage in the Senate. In a 341-88 vote that crossed party lines, lawmakers advanced the sprawling defense and related appropriations package, underscoring persistent majorities in both parties willing to expand military outlays even amid growing concerns about fiscal discipline.
The total exceeds the Pentagon’s original FY 2026 budget request by $8.4 billion but still falls far short of more than $50 billion in additional funds the Defense Department sought after submitting its budget to Congress. That gap reflects, among other things, a stark $26.5 billion in “funding discrepancies” between the Pentagon’s request and the broader reconciliation bill – essentially accounting errors that left vital programs underfunded and were partly addressed by the House’s topline increase.
To fiscal conservatives and critics of Washington’s military spending consensus, those discrepancies signal deep structural problems in defense budgeting: an inability to accurately forecast needs, manage programs, or adhere to prudent fiscal stewardship. Lining up nearly three dozen major weapon systems, force structures, and procurement lines every year, the Pentagon’s budget process has consistently produced overruns and unpredictable spending swings that funnel money to entrenched interests rather than identified national priorities.
Yet the House markup did not merely bridge gaps; it added money to programs that the services themselves did not request – or, in some cases, explicitly asked to cancel. Lawmakers tacked on $897 million for the Navy’s sixth-generation F/A-XX fighter program, directed a contract award for engineering and development, and preserved $1.1 billion for the Air Force’s E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning aircraft, which the service had sought to terminate. The Army’s agile funding proposal was rejected, while about $300 million was allotted for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program despite the Army’s call to end it.
Such additions comprise what critics deride as classic “pork-barrel” spending: earmarks and authorizations that serve narrow local or industrial constituencies rather than measurable defense needs. Funding lines for munitions procurement, disparate platforms, and legacy systems balloon irrespective of operational justification, raising perennial questions about legislative oversight and taxpayer value.
Compounding those concerns, the House Rules Committee refused to allow several amendments aimed at reigning in spending or constraining executive war powers to reach the floor. Measures that would have restricted funding for operations in Venezuela and others that would limit the scope of presidential military action were blocked from debate, leaving the core text untouched since its release. To some observers, the procedural closure itself was as significant as the topline figures: despite robust majorities on the floor, substantive policy alternatives were stifled before they could be considered.
Historically, the sheer scale of the defense appropriation reflects decades of incremental growth in U.S. military spending. Annual defense budgets have routinely eclipsed half a trillion dollars for more than a decade, and the FY 2026 package continues a long trend in which appropriators add funds above and beyond executive branch requests. By contrast, civilian programs and domestic discretionary spending have struggled to keep pace, prompting both political and public disquiet about national priorities.
Supporters of the bill defend the scale and scope as necessary to maintain US military readiness, industrial base capacity, and technological edge in an era of renewed great-power competition. They argue that predictable and robust funding deters adversaries and reassures allies, even if some line items exceed Pentagon forecasts. Opponents counter that emboldening the military establishment with ever-expanding budgets encourages intervention abroad and diverts resources from pressing domestic needs.
While the House’s 341-88 vote gives the bill substantial momentum, its journey is not complete. The Senate must act before the end of the current funding deadline on January 30 to avert a lapse in appropriations. Senate debate may give rise to further amendments or adjustments, but the core framework reflects a bipartisan consensus that large and growing defense outlays are politically durable, even as questions about accountability, efficiency, and strategic purpose multiply.

Bitter cold couldn’t keep shoppers away from South Loop market
Despite Saturday morning’s frigid temperatures, the Roosevelt Collection Shops’ indoor event space was warm and bustling.
Shoppers sampled locally grown produce as dogs trotted by on leashes and children played in the “Kids Zone.” The smells of tamales, sweet nuts and fresh-baked goods filled the large indoor space, while loud, upbeat music pulsed from a DJ booth.
Organizers said that Saturday’s South Loop Farmers Market drew about 1,200 customers to its weekly event, down from the 1,500 and 2,000 visitors who typically come each Saturday to the Roosevelt location.
“Even though it was cold today, we still made the effort to just get out of the house and do something,” Bronzeville resident Nina Idemudia said of the market that attracts shoppers from across Chicagoland to browse a wide range of goods, including mushrooms, salsa, artisanal coffee and treats for their pets.
“My partner loves coming to the farmers market and she came last week and was raving about it.”
First opening in summer 2012 by cofounders Stephanie Jokich and Tina Feldstein, their original intention was to create more community engagement in the South Loop. But as their markets have grown, so have their goals.
“It’s always been community-based at the foundation, but now it’s turned into so much more,” Jokich said. “It’s turned into, not just the need to support our local economy and our food system, but to really cultivate joy.”
In January 2023, they opened their first winter indoor market at the Roosevelt Collection Shops, eventually expanding the market to operate during warmer months as well as more dates in the colder months. Last year, the winter market became so popular that they opened another location at the Water Tower Place.
She said both spaces continue to attract more customers as the weeks go by, although Saturday attendance was noticeably lower than in previous weeks due to the freezing cold and a weather advisory. The morning temperature at O’Hare International Airport was around minus 9, according to the National Weather Service.
Arctic blast brings warnings, closures and cancellations to Chicago area
Typically, around 50 to 55 vendors attend the Saturday market, most of them hyper-local to Chicagoland, though some vendors, mostly farmers, are from the surrounding states, including Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.
In total, there were 41 vendors, with three pulling out the morning of due to the weather conditions.
But that didn’t stop Chris Hebron, owner of Hebron Farms, from making the trek from Vandalia, Michigan, with his daughter. Typically, their commute to Roosevelt Collection Shops is two hours, but with the harsh weather, it was almost three hours.
Hebron has participated in the South Loop Farmers Market for nine years and is one of the longest-participating vendors. He sells various meats and seasonal produce each week from his small, family-owned farm.
“We just got such a loyal customer base in the South Loop that we’ve felt it’s like our obligation to keep feeding them,” Hebron said.
Zeitlin’s Delicatessen has been a vendor at the farmers market for almost six years. Owned by Sam Zeitlin, the small business sells modern Jewish bakery and deli classics, including bagels, challah and babkas, alongside Chicago-inspired creations such as giardiniera focaccia and hot dogs stuffed in everything bagels.
“It’s really important, regardless of where you live in the city, to have access to fresh local food,” said Rebecca Adame, a close friend of Zeitlin’s who was working the market. “Being able to come here and people are still like treading out in the cold like that means a lot.”
Thanks to his success at the South Loop market and other pop-ups across the city, Zeitlin opened his first brick-and-mortar location this past November.
“I really appreciate that the crowd is always good vibes and the South Loop team, they’re all so amazing,” Adame said. “They’re so supportive.”
The Jewish-based deli had a steady stream of regulars and new customers throughout the morning.
Craving a bagel before he arrived at the market, South Loop resident Matthew Sidelinker said that when he saw Zeitlin’s, he knew he had to try one. He ordered a jalapeño cheddar bagel with scallion cream cheese, while his wife chose an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese.
“It’s really nice to see people braving the cold to still come out here and support people in the community,” Sidelinker said. “We were pleasantly surprised that there’s this many people walking around.”
The Saturday South Loop Farmers Market runs at Roosevelt Collection Shops from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through March 28. The Sunday market is at the Water Tower Place, 12-4 p.m. through March 29. Both locations offer two hours of free validated parking, and pets are welcome.

A 37-year-old anti-ICE agitator who was armed with a handgun was shot and killed by federal Border Patrol agents on Saturday morning during what the Department of Homeland Security described as a targeted immigration enforcement operation, sparking immediate political outrage and street protests.
Border Patrol officers were conducting a targeted operation against an illegal immigrant wanted for violent assault. According to the federal agency, a man approached officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. Officers attempted to disarm the individual before he violently resisted, leading to an armed struggle.

In a press conference, Border Commander Greg Bovino said the agent fired after assessing an immediate threat to officers on the scene. “Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots,” he said.
According to Bovino, medics provided aid immediately, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He said the suspect was carrying two loaded magazines and had no identification. Bovino described the encounter as a deliberate attempt to inflict mass harm on law enforcement.
“This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” he said.
Bovino added that the situation escalated when a large group arrived and began interfering with officers.
“Then, about two hundred rioters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault law enforcement,” he said, noting that crowd control measures were deployed to protect the public and officers. Bovino said the investigation remains ongoing.
“The situation is evolving, and more information is forthcoming.”
Despite the lack of complete details, Democrats pounced on the story to once again attack federal law enforcement and President Trump.
Mayor Jacob Frey held a press conference alongside Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara to address the shooting and rapidly growing protests. While O’Hara tried to de-escalate and call for calm, Frey had other intentions entirely.
“I just saw a video of more than six masked agents pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death,” he said.
“How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end? How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realizes that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values?”
Gov. Tim Walz also responded to the shooting.
“I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening,” he said in a post on X Saturday morning.
“The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
Walz has been accusing ICE agents of being inadequately trained for weeks; however, in a statement responding to the shooting, the Border Patrol Union pointed out that Border Patrol agents “are trained extremely well to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and innocent third parties. When a supposed ‘peaceful’ protester brings a weapon (such as a loaded handgun) and brandishes it, there are going to be severe consequences and repercussions.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) issued a statement accusing federal agents of murdering another member of the community.
“This appears to be an execution by immigration enforcement. I am absolutely heartbroken, horrified, and appalled that federal agents murdered another member of our community. It is beyond shameful these federal agents are targeting our residents instead of protecting them,” she said.
“This isn’t isolated or accidental. The Trump administration is trying to beat us into submission rather than protect us. This administration cannot continue violating constitutional rights under the guise of immigration enforcement. ICE and CBP must leave Minnesota immediately. Their presence is terrorizing our communities, violating rights, and taking lives with zero accountability. Minnesota was once a place of refuge, and Trump has turned it into a war zone where unchecked federal forces murder our neighbors.”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar urged the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress to get ICE out of the state immediately.
However, Vice President JD Vance, who was in Minnesota earlier this week, responded to the shooting by criticizing local authorities for failing to respond to requests for collaboration with federal agents.
“When I visited Minnesota, what the ICE agents wanted more than anything was to work with local law enforcement so that situations on the ground didn’t get out of hand,” he said.
“The local leadership in Minnesota has so far refused to answer those requests.”
President Trump also blamed the lack of police for the violence.
“Where are the local Police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE Officers?” He asked in a post on Truth Social.
