New Crown Point firefighter sworn in at board of works meeting
The Crown Point Fire Department officially welcomed its newest member, Teagen Janson, according to a release.
Janson took the oath of office during the Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday.
He was issued Badge No. 88, becoming the 21st firefighter hired under Crown Point Mayor Pete Land.
A 2024 graduate of Crown Point High School, Janson began his path to the fire service through the department’s high school internship program while completing EMT school and working during his senior year.
Janson is the fourth graduate of the CPHS Fire Department Internship Program to be hired as a full-time firefighter, continuing a pipeline to the department views as critical to workforce development and long-term succession planning, according to city officials.
“Teagen has earned this opportunity,” said Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner in the release. “He showed up early, stayed late and proved that he was willing to put the work in. Our internship program is designed to give young people a real look at the fire service and Teagen embraced it from day one,” he added.
Janson was assigned to Turn One, serving under Battalion Chief Scott Abraham.
Janson comes from a family rooted in public service. His badge was pinned on by his
father, James, a sergeant with more than 23 years of service with the Schererville Police Department. His mother, Annie, is a nurse, and his family includes multiple generations committed to serving their communities.
“We’re proud to welcome Teagen to this department,” Baumgardner added. “He represents the
future of the Crown Point Fire Department, and we look forward to seeing him grow into a role
model for future interns and young people who aspire to serve.”

Federal officers shot and killed a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, according to a hospital record obtained by the Associated Press.
Minneapolis Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, said in a social media post that he had been in contact with the White House after the shooting. He called on President Donald Trump to end the crackdown in his state. The details surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately clear.
Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told The Associated Press in a text messages that person had a firearm with two magazines. The shooting came amid widespread daily protests in the Twin Cities since the Jan. 7 shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good.
Congressional Democrats sharply criticize DHS chief Kristi Noem
Congressional Democrats responded with immediate outrage to the killing of another person by federal agents in Minneapolis.
Congressman Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, called for ICE to be “abolished” and for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be impeached.
“Trump has created a militarized police force accountable only to him and ready to murder people in our streets. These agents need to leave our cities NOW,” the California Democrat wrote on social media.
Congressman Brad Schneider, chair of the moderate New Democratic Coalition in the U.S. House, called for an investigation into the shooting and for federal agents to leave Minnesota.
“Every agent involved in this shooting must be suspended pending a full and independent investigation and ultimately held to account for their actions today,” Schneider said in a statement. “And, Kristi Noem has got to go. She needs to resign or be fired. If not, Congress must act,” the Illinois Democrat continued.

Vance criticizes local authorities for refusing to cooperate with ICE agents
Vice President JD Vance responded to the shooting in a post on X and said that when he visited Minneapolis this week, “what the ICE agents wanted more than anything was to work with local law enforcement so that situations on the ground didn’t get out of hand.”

Meanwhile, a makeshift memorial at a bus stop next to the site of the shooting was taking shape. People left flowers and lit candles.
Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office asks for National Guard help
Sheriff Dawanna Witt has requested assistance from the Minnesota National Guard to support deputies at the Whipple Federal Building so that deputies can be assigned to other areas.
The Minnesota National Guard’s role is to work in support of local law enforcement and emergency responders, providing additional resources, the sheriff’s office said.
Their presence is meant to help create a secure environment where all Minnesotans can exercise their rights safely, including the right to peacefully protest.
“We know this moment is challenging for our community. Remember that our local teams are also part of this community. We respect and protect everyone’s rights to voice concerns and stand up for what they believe in, but we urge all actions to remain peaceful and lawful. Our collective priority remains protecting our neighborhoods and keeping people safe,” a statement said.

DHS says officers fired “defensive shots”
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that federal officers were conducting an operation as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
She said officers fired “defensive shots” after a man with a handgun approached them and “violently resisted” when officers tried to disarm him. O’Hara said police believe the man was a “lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.”

Fire territory sparks crowd, but hearing postponed
A packed audience came to the Lake Station City Council meeting Thursday to offer comments and learn tax impact information on the proposed East Lake Fire Protection Territory, a partnership with the town of New Chicago.
The public couldn’t comment, however, because the wrong address appeared in the legal notice for the public hearing. The council voted to remove it from the agenda.
There will be a do-over Feb. 13 when the council meets in the community room at Edison Sr.-Jr. High School, 3304 Parkside Ave.
The council has been meeting at the school since last summer, after a fire sprinkler pipe burst and flooded City Hall in June.
The address in the legal notice said the meeting was at city hall with its address, not the high school’s address.
The city council will hold three public hearings on the fire territory that would be financed by a new uniform tax paid by residents and taxing units in each community.
It has raised concerns by River Forest and Lake Station school districts about the tax losses they would endure as they struggle to stay afloat.
Financial advisors from the municipalities and Lake Station and River Forest school districts agreed the schools would shoulder the biggest tax impact.
An advisor for the municipalities said Lake Station schools would lose about $37,000 but Lake Station’s financial advisor pegged its loss at about $110,000.
Both Lake Station and River Forest superintendents and members of the school boards attended the meeting.
The council whipped through its agenda, which had no new or old business on it. Council President Rick Long, D-5th, asked the financial advisors to offer some details since so many people came to learn about the fire territory.
The effort comes after the city of Hobart raised its contract fee with New Chicago for ambulance service. Hobart Mayor Josh Huddlestun said the New Chicago fee of $100 per ride was much lower than the Hobart resident fee of $1,000, and the city sought a higher annual fee from New Chicago.
Its town manager, Sue Pelfrey, said the town couldn’t afford the fee hike after the impact of Senate Bill 1, a property tax reform law that passed last year. The new law hits schools the hardest with estimates at $744 million for districts statewide.
Lake Station council members voiced caution about the fire territory, some saying they needed more meetings to understand it better.
New Chicago has already held one public hearing and will hold a second one Feb. 11.
After all the public hearings are exhausted, the two government bodies will determine whether they want to move forward.
Under the proposal, the Lake Station Volunteer Fire Department would provide ambulance and fire service to New Chicago, which is having trouble staffing its volunteer department. The territory’s first-year tax rate would be about 0.3773 cents per $100 assessed valuation and the equipment replacement tax rate would be $0.0333, or a merged rate of about 0.41 cents per $100 assessed valuation.
Many taxpayers wouldn’t be affected, the advisors said, because their bills are already at the top of their property tax cap. Other taxing units – schools, library, township, county – would absorb the cost and likely reduce their services.
Meanwhile, Chief of Staff Adrian Vera said City Hall will reopen in mid-February. “We should be back in the council chamber for the second meeting in February.
He said the repairs are nearly complete, with cameras being installed and painting nearly done.

There is a rapidly forming narrative in the European and liberal media that the Europeans “won Davos”: primarily by getting Trump to “de-escalate” his demand that the United States acquire Greenland from Denmark.
This is a very wrong take.
The reality is that Trump won Davos, hands down.
And not only did he win it; he owned it.
I have never before seen a single individual so completely dominate this vast bazaar of the powerful, the wealthy, the famous, and the self-important.
Trump never seriously meant to annex Greenland or to impose new tariffs on the Europeans.
Why would he when the U.S. already enjoys all the military access to the frigid island it could every possibly need?
Fact: Trump means what he says on Truth Social only about half the time.
Ten years ago, Europeans made the mistake of taking Trump neither seriously nor literally.
Now they make the opposite mistake of treating him both seriously and literally.
The reason Trump forced Greenland to be the No. 1 topic at Davos was to keep European leaders from meddling in America’s Middle Eastern and Eastern European policy.
Why might Trump prefer the Europeans to be talking about Greenland instead of Iran or Ukraine?
Because Europe would be bound to make its usual pleas for “de-escalation” with respect to Tehran. And because the Americans think it was the EU and UK who last year impeded progress
Of course, this goes wholly counter to the Davos consensus, which is that wicked Trump has torn up the sacred liberal international order.

Pittsburgh Steelers hiring Mike McCarthy as coach of his hometown team
PITTSBURGH — Mike McCarthy is coming home.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that the club has reached a verbal agreement with McCarthy to replace Mike Tomlin as head coach.
McCarthy grew up in the Greenfield neighborhood, just a couple of miles away from the team’s practice facility on the city’s South Side.
McCarthy, 62, is 185–123–2 (playoffs included) across 18 seasons, 13 with the Green Bay Packers — who beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl following the 2010 season — and five with the Dallas Cowboys.
His hire is just the fourth by the Steelers since 1969 and a marked departure from his predecessors, Tomlin and Hall of Famers Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.
All three were largely unknown assistants/coordinators. McCarthy is hardly that.
McCarthy would replace Tomlin, who stepped down this month after his 19th season ended with a seventh straight playoff loss, this one at home to the Houston Texans. Tomlin’s surprise departure came as he was under contract for 2026 with a club option for 2027.
The Steelers took a methodical approach, interviewing nearly a dozen candidates that spanned a wide spectrum of experience, from Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores (who spent 2022 as a defensive assistant on Tomlin’s staff) to Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who was hired by the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday to replace fired coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh then was hired to coach the New York Giants.
They ultimately landed on McCarthy, who takes over a team that has been stuck in a purgatory of sorts for going on a decade.
Tomlin’s nearly two-decade tenure included 193 regular-season victories — tied with Noll for the most in franchise history — and the team’s sixth Super Bowl. Perhaps most remarkably, Pittsburgh didn’t have a losing season with Tomlin on the sideline.
That startling consistency, however, did not always translate to postseason success. The Steelers have been one-and-done in each of their last six playoff appearances, all of them double-digit losses.
In some ways, the Steelers have been victims of their own success. They frequently have been drafting in the high teens and low-20s, not exactly a prime position to find a franchise quarterback. It didn’t help that they chose not to draft Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement in his final seasons, then whiffed badly on Kenny Pickett, who flamed out in less than two years after being taken in the first round of the 2022 draft.
It’s led to a revolving door at the most important position on the field. If Aaron Rodgers, who will be a free agent in March, doesn’t return for a 22nd season, the Steelers will have their sixth different Week 1 quarterback in six years. McCarthy’s arrival, however, would seemingly open the door for the 42-year-old Rodgers to come back.
Rodgers said this month that he believes he would have at least a couple of options if he chose to run it back one more time, and his long partnership with McCarthy in Green Bay included a Super Bowl victory over Tomlin and the Steelers. The Steelers will have the 21st pick when a draft that appears to be thin in quality options at quarterback descends on the Steel City in late April.
There’s a very real chance the Steelers, who have only veteran backup Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard under contract for next season, will kick the can down the road again and address a handful of other positions of need in the draft, namely wide receiver and cornerback.
Regardless, president Art Rooney II brushed off the idea of the Steelers rebuilding.
“I don’t like that word that much,” Rooney said the day after Tomlin resigned. “We’ll try to compete day one if we can.”
McCarthy’s arrival would indicate that’s still the plan.
His hire would also give McCarthy a chance to burnish a resume that stalled a bit after guiding the Packers from a wild-card berth to the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl in 2010.
McCarthy is just 6-9 in the playoffs since the confetti fell at AT&T Stadium. That includes a 1-2 mark with the Cowboys, with whom he posted three straight 12-win seasons from 2021-23 before they fired him after tumbling to 7-10 in 2024 thanks in large part to an injury to quarterback Dak Prescott that limited him to just eight games.
The one thing McCarthy — who early in his career was a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh (which now shares a building with the Steelers) — has consistently done is put together offenses that can move the ball.
McCarthy-coached teams have finished in the top 10 in yards in 12 of his 18 seasons, though his first years in both Green Bay in 2006 and Dallas in 2020 were sluggish.
The Steelers have been stuck in a transition period on offense for a solid half-decade. That transition may soon move to an expensive and aging defense that has potential Hall of Famers at every level (defensive tackle Cam Heyward, linebacker T.J. Watt and defensive back Jalen Ramsey), all in their 30s.
McCarthy would be the first Steelers hire with previous NFL head coaching experience since Mike Nixon in 1965. Nixon lasted just one season in Pittsburgh and was fired after going 2-12. Nixon was replaced by Bill Austin, who made it three years before the Steelers hired Noll, a decision that transformed the franchise from a laughingstock into one of the league’s most successful and stable teams.
Noll and his four Super Bowls set a standard of excellence that Cowher and Tomlin maintained in their own unique ways.
That standard, however, had slipped of late. McCarthy’s mandate will be returning some of the luster to a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since the final days of the Barack Obama administration.
It will also provide a test of sorts for the hometown boy who made good, who now gets to find out whether you can truly go home again.

Mayor Brandon Johnson calls to abolish ICE after Minneapolis shooting as Gov. JB Pritzker urges funding halt
Mayor Brandon Johnson called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Saturday after a federal agent killed another person in Minneapolis, while Gov. JB Pritzker called upon Democrats to halt funding for the agency but stopped short of saying it should be dissolved.
“When they come for one of us, they come for all of us,” Johnson, a progressive mayor of the nation’s third-largest city who verbally tangled with ICE and federal Border Patrol during their high-profile raids in and around Chicago, posted on X in Spanish. “ICE must be abolished.”
Amid roiling protests in Minnesota that continued Saturday, federal immigration officers fatally shot the 37-year-old man in Minneapolis, where Republican President Donald Trump’s latest deportation campaign has unfolded.
Video of the scene appeared to show the man on the ground when gunshots rang out, quickly drawing condemnation from witnesses on the scene and later Democrats. U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said the man was armed, posting a photo of a handgun.
The second Trump administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown has revived calls among the left to dismantle ICE — though many of the raids witnessed in Minneapolis, Chicago and elsewhere across the nation feature other DHS agencies such as Customs and Border Patrol.
Multiple Democrats, such as U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez and Juliana Stratton, Pritzker’s Illinois lieutenant governor and a candidate for U.S. Senate, as well as several congressional candidates, have also endorsed the “Abolish ICE” movement.
Pritzker, a possible 2028 presidential contender, has not yet gone that far.
“We must put a stop to Trump’s ICE,” Pritzker wrote on X. “Stop the funding, stop the occupations, stop the killings.”
The issue of ICE’s budget has become a new line of demarcation within the Democratic Party. On Thursday, the Republican-controlled House approved funding for ICE and other agencies under the Department of Homeland Security. While some have called for ICE to be fully abolished, others have said funding for the agency and other immigration arms of the federal government should be cut off. Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Democratic Senators to hold the line.
“I just think that if we do not stop this now, if we don’t abolish Trump’s ICE and make sure that we have a trained force that is following the law, that this is going to erupt into something really terrible. It already is, but it could get vastly worse,” Pritzker said Saturday afternoon on MSNOW.
That Pritzker qualified his calls with abolishing “Trump’s ICE” in particular shows he and others might be reluctant to support permanently dismantling the agency, especially after the 2020 “defund the police” movement caught fire among progressives but ultimately fizzled out in the political arena. U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Stratton’s primary challenger, has also stressed that he supports abolishing “Trump’s ICE.” Another Senate candidate, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, has focused her efforts on issuing articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Pritzker said during the brief interview on MSNOW that under the current administration ICE’s ranks have been increased with “a bunch of untrained and unqualified people” and the agency has “become some sort of secret police force for Donald Trump.”
“They need to step back from American cities, and in particular, right now, they need to withdraw, step back from Minneapolis, and we need to talk about, How are we now going to proceed without them causing more damage and more violence, rather than them lying persistently about what they’re doing and causing uproar in our American cities,” Pritzker said.
Saturday’s fatal shooting happened just weeks after the Jan. 7 slaying of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis.
Johnson, who has called for the city to broadly “resist” Trump’s attacks on Chicago, first alluded to the movement to dismantle ICE last month when he endorsed an entry to the city’s annual snowplow contest that said “ABOLISH ICE.”
Last week, he more forcefully said on X, “Abolishing ICE would make us all safer,” noting the city’s crime drop preceded the Trump administration’s targeted immigration raids last fall.
