Thornwood sophomore Lester Watson learns from his older brother how to bite back. And win. ‘Got to be a dog.’
Sophomore guard Lester Watson has had major weight on his shoulders since the first day of his high school career at Thornwood.
But Watson hasn’t been bothered by the challenge of taking on older players. He’s used to it. He’s the youngest of four basketball-playing brothers.
The oldest of the family, Nehemiah, played professionally in Europe, Asia and Mexico.
“It made me tougher at a young age from the physicality playing against my brothers,” Watson said. “I was getting bumped and I couldn’t cry, you know? They would just go harder. They told me, ‘You’ve got to be a dog.’
“That helped me a lot because when I got to varsity against these bigger guys, I’m not scared.”
Watson showed off that fearlessness again Monday night, scoring 16 points as the host Thunderbirds rolled to a 68-53 Southland Athletic Conference win over Bloom in South Holland.

Jordan Jones and Mekhi Young led Thornwood (18-9, 5-6) with 19 points apiece, with Jones also pulling down 10 rebounds. Antwaun Sims contributed seven points and eight rebounds as the Thunderbirds avenged an 83-80 loss to the Blazing Trojans on Dec. 12.
Troy Garner finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Bloom (13-12, 5-6). Jaqun Harris added nine points and seven rebounds, while Kaden McClellan and Keiwon Gulley each chipped in with eight points.
Watson, meanwhile, was thrown into the fire as a freshman last season when he immediately became one of the top players on the varsity for Thornwood.
“The physicality was the toughest part,” he said. “Coming into this season, I knew you have to get in the weight room. You have to be ready to finish through contact. My shooting got better, too.

“I spent a lot of time on shooting because I was more of a finisher last year, so I had to even out my game.”
Watson knocked down four 3-pointers Monday night. Thornwood was hot early, racing to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and never trailed.
After Bloom closed within 43-35 late in the third quarter, Watson scored eight straight points to help the Thunderbirds pull away for good.
Thornwood coach Deoplus Williams pointed out that Watson has been more open to coaching this season.

“He took on the challenge of watching more film and allowing us to critique him a little bit more,” Williams said. “As a freshman, he didn’t want to hear it. He was used to being the best player.
“You get to high school and you figure out there are a lot of other guys who are just as good as you. Now he’s taking the critiques and learning from them and he’s executing a lot more.”
Jones, a senior guard, has tried to take Watson under his wing and offer him veteran guidance. He has seen Watson come a long way.
“He’s grown a lot,” Jones said. “He’s still quiet, but as a basketball player, he’s matured a lot. He’s improved mentally, emotionally and, of course, you see on the court he’s a lot better.”

For Watson, it was just a matter of staying patient and learning from his mistakes. He and Young, his longtime friend, are both sophomores who are quickly growing into dependable stars.
“I’ve just been growing with my teammates,” Watson said. “It’s been a long process. Even though we’re sophomores, we still want to lead the team. We just know we’re dogs and we want to win.”
Watson confirmed that he and Young are constantly pushing each other, comparing stats and staging their own side competition while they work together to help the Thunderbirds win.
“Mekhi and I have known each other since we were young and the chemistry is there,” Watson said. “Ever since kindergarten, we’ve been going back and forth talking about which one of us is a better basketball player.
“We definitely motivate each other and make each other better.”

Can Matas Buzelis lead the Chicago Bulls’ offense? 3 questions raised by a 123-115 loss to the Brooklyn Nets
BROOKLYN — On Monday night, a rock visited a hard place.
The Chicago Bulls didn’t land in New York with much in the way of expectations. After parting ways with eight players at the NBA trade deadline, this team is still just trying to get its bearings. Playing against one of the worst-ranked teams in the league should have provided a template for how to build comfort among this newly constructed roster. But for a Bulls team designed to join the Brooklyn Nets at the bottom of that barrel, Monday’s 123-115 loss was nothing more than a lesson in dysfunction.
The Bulls are now at risk of entering the All-Star break on a six-game losing streak after dropping eight of their last nine games. The Nets are only slightly worse off. Their main pride this season is committing to the rebuild earlier than the Bulls, which means they sit two slots lower in the Eastern Conference standings. Notably, three of their 15 wins have occurred against the Bulls.
Neither of these teams is set up to succeed — organizationally, the Bulls are attempting to inch their way into better draft lottery stakes — but that doesn’t mean the players are trying any less hard to prove they belong on their roster and in the league. On the hardwood, that translated into chaos.
The Bulls can’t play graceful basketball anymore. That option hasn’t been on the table since the trade deadline. Their frenetic dysfunction was matched by a Nets team equally lost in the post-deadline tumult. Matas Buzelis tumbled head-over-heels after accidentally jumping over a teammate to block a shot. Nick Richards took an elbow to the eye socket from Collin Sexton. Minutes later, Sexton earned a foul for nose-diving under Day’Ron Sharpe. At two different moments in the game, the Bulls and Nets traded multiple turnovers in the same possession.
The Bulls are best defined at this point in the season by what they are missing. Their confidence from the 3-point arc imploded with the departures of Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White, resulting in 10-for-36 shooting against Brooklyn. Even worse, they shot 44% from the floor as a whole, missing almost half of their shots in the paint. These players hardly know each other, a fact reflected in their 18 points given up off 18 turnovers.
“Listen, it’s an unprecedented situation we’re in right now,” coach Billy Donovan said. “We’ll have choices to make because if we just think we’re going to have a bunch of guys come together with no training camp and we’re just going to go out there and win basketball games — it doesn’t work that way.”
Win or lose, this game was always going to offer more uncertainty than answers — and that will likely remain true for the rest of the season. Here are the top three questions raised by the Bulls in Brooklyn.
1. Can Matas Buzelis lead this offense?

This Bulls team — and, in the larger picture, the future of the franchise — is structured around 21-year-old Matas Buzelis. Yet the forward is still struggling to stamp his presence on the game as the primary scorer and playmaker on the court for the Bulls.
Buzelis played only 11 minutes in the first half, which made him the sixth man despite the fact that he anchored the starting rotation. He went 1-for-7 in that short span while turning the ball over three times. Things improved for Buzelis in the second quarter, when he ripped off 10 points in quick succession with the help of a couple of 3-pointers and trips to the free-throw line.
But the forward still hasn’t figured out how to force the issue at the rim — or inside the 3-point arc in general — with the consistency the Bulls need. He scored 18 points against the Nets, fewer than Anfernee Simons (23 points) and Collin Sexton (21 points).
It’s clear that Buzelis is uncomfortable with his new teammates, something that should fade with more time spent together on the court. The lack of center depth with Jalen Smith sidelined has forced him to size back up to the four despite his (and the Bulls’) preference of playing at the three. And without Josh Giddey on the court, Buzelis is the top scouting assignment for opponents coming into every game, creating a sizable defensive challenge that he simply has not been able to overcome.
But that’s not enough for the Bulls. Outside of their roster reconstruction, the main priority for the team this season was to facilitate considerable growth in the second-year star. While coach Billy Donovan and the front office have been pleased with Buzelis’ improvements, he still isn’t standing out as a primary option — especially with the ball in his hands. Whether that changes in the final 28 games of the season will ultimately define the success of the year for the Bulls.
2. Can the Bulls outplay their lack of size?

No aspect of the trade deadline gutted the Bulls more than the removal of size. With Smith still sidelined due to a calf injury, the Bulls only have one true center — new addition Nick Richards — while leaning on undersized big man Guerschon Yabusele to fill in the rest of the frontcourt.
Yabusele started Monday’s game and immediately racked up two blundering fouls in four minutes of playing time. Richards fared slightly better as a backup option, who tallied 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. But Monday’s game still offered a bleak look at the short-term future for the Bulls around the rim.
Despite shrinking considerably at the deadline, the Bulls found comfort in double-big lineups — and still see a larger roster as a key for the team in the long-term. But for now, the roster doesn’t reflect that vision. Yabusele is unlikely to stay in Chicago (or even the NBA) past the end of this season. Richards is making his case for a backup job. Even when Smith returns, those bodies aren’t enough to run double-big looks or outweigh the diminished size of the backcourt.
3. How long will (or can) the Bulls hold out Josh Giddey and Tre Jones?

Guards Josh Giddey and Tre Jones missed another game in Brooklyn with a pair of left hamstring strains. The two scrimmaged together after shootaround Monday morning — marking a positive step for their availability — but coach Billy Donovan said neither is likely to play until after the All-Star break.
It’s hard to tell if the Bulls are just being particularly cautious with their two most impactful playmakers or if this is another mechanism to protect the team’s aggressive downward spiral into lottery territory. Donovan insists that Giddey never took “a step back” in his hamstring recovery after returning for one game against Miami shortly before the deadline. Yet the Bulls never showed much urgency in trying to hustle either player back into the rotation until after this weekend’s hiatus.
Either way, Chicago can’t play like itself (whatever that’s supposed to be) until Giddey returns to the lineup.

The Israeli government on Sunday approved sweeping changes to land registration and civil control in the occupied West Bank, a move Palestinians say breaches the Oslo Accords and advances de facto annexation.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the policy was designed to deepen annexation of the West Bank and violated agreements signed with Israel, including the Oslo Accords, according to the Wafa news agency.
Rawhi Fattouh, chairman of the Palestinian National Council, described the decisions as “racist and dangerous”, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of imposing new colonial realities on the ground.
Several Palestinian factions, including Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, also condemned the move.
The Oslo Accords, signed in 1993 and 1995 between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), established limited Palestinian self-rule in parts of the West Bank and Gaza, dividing the West Bank into Areas A, B, and C as a temporary framework for a future Palestinian state – a goal that has never been realized.
Muayyad Shaaban, head of the Palestinian Commission Against the Wall and Settlements, said the Israeli decisions represent a dangerous escalation that undermines international law and adds to crimes against Palestinians.
The Palestinian National Initiative said the measures drive the final nail into the Oslo Accords and open the door to large-scale land seizures benefiting Israeli settlers.
The Yesha Council, which represents Israeli settlements, celebrated the decision, saying it “entrenches Israeli sovereignty on the ground.”
Peace Now, an NGO monitoring settlement expansion, said Netanyahu has effectively chosen to “topple the Palestinian Authority” and “impose de facto annexation”, warning the moves go far beyond Area C and break barriers to massive land theft across the West Bank.
What are the changes?
Under the new Israeli measures, the military would be able to enforce regulations on so-called unlicensed buildings in Areas A and B, citing heritage and archaeological sites, allowing for the confiscation of Palestinian land and demolition of structures.
The changes would also lift secrecy on West Bank land registries, enabling settlers to identify Palestinian landowners and purchase land directly. Exposing ownership records could make it easier for settlers to forge claims over Palestinian land, a tactic widely documented and likely to accelerate land seizures across the occupied territory.
The measures also ease the sale of Palestinian land to Israelis and overturn a Jordanian-era law prohibiting transfers to non-Palestinians.
Planning, licensing, and construction powers in Hebron would be transferred from the Palestinian municipality to the Israeli army, expanding control over building permits, development, resources, and security. An independent local authority will also be established for the Israeli settlement in Hebron.
The Hebron municipality condemned the move as “illegitimate and dangerous”. Under the 1997 Hebron Protocol, the city was divided into Hebron 1, under Palestinian control, and Hebron 2, under Israeli authority, covering southern and eastern sections.
The new policy also affects the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, a site holy to Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
The Palestinian presidency warned that any violation of Islamic or Christian holy sites, including the mosque, is unacceptable. In January, Israel barred the mosque’s Palestinian directors and seized planning rights over part of the site, violating longstanding arrangements.
The policy comes amid rising settler attacks and access restrictions on Palestinian holy sites since October 2023, including Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus.

El Nikkei registró un avance del 3,9% el lunes para establecer un récord, un día después del triunfo aplastante del Partido Liberal Democrático de la primera ministra Sanae Takaichi en unas elecciones parlamentarias.
