Evergreen Park’s Ella Throndson lists some pretty good influences. Michael Jordan and Caitlin Clark. ‘Obsessed.’
Evergreen Park’s Ella Throndson got started in basketball because of Michael Jordan.
Of course, she wasn’t even born when Jordan was winning championships and MVP honors for the Chicago Bulls, but Jordan’s influence was passed down by her mother, Jennifer Houze.
“My mom is obsessed with Michael Jordan,” Throndson said. “She talked about him a lot. I wanted to play basketball after seeing NBA players on TV.
“I used to watch his highlights all of the time. He could play through anything and against all adversity.”
Now, Throndson is making highlights of her own.
The junior guard hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter Saturday, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals for the host Mustangs in a 52-23 nonconference win over Plainfield Central.

Tatum Harris led Evergreen Park (23-6) with 15 points to go with four steals, while Shannon Farrell added seven points and 10 rebounds. Afterward, senior forward Grace Kole was honored for passing 500 points and 500 rebounds in her career.
Junior guard Ella Page produced 11 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench for Plainfield Central (7-18).
Throndson, meanwhile, wasn’t even born in 1989, which is the last time Evergreen Park won a conference title in girls basketball. She’s excited that this team could do it.
“We’re progressing through this season very well and we’re working hard,” she said. “We have definitely improved from last year.

“We’re moving the ball. We’re setting the screens for one another. We’re working together more.”
Evergreen Park entered this week with an 8-2 record in the South Suburban Red, with two conference games left against Reavis and Shepard. Reavis is right behind the Mustangs at 6-3.
Harris has also been getting a kick out of how well the Mustangs are playing.
“I’m very confident with the team — I think we’re going to so a long way in the playoffs,” she said, “I think everybody on the team brings different things, so when we come together, it’s amazing.”

George Shimko is in his second year as Evergreen Park’s coach. Last season, the Mustangs ended up 21-11 despite starting out with a 60-45 loss to Shepard, a 58-41 loss to Hillcrest and a 55-20 loss to Marist.
But Throndson and Co. were able to withstand that tough stretch and have thrived ever since.
“She got sick a little bit during the season last year but she’s just awesome,” Shimko said of Throndson. “I told her that she’s probably our fiercest competitor.
“She just keeps playing and playing and playing and she’s so coachable, too. She wants to do really well. Sometimes, she really gets amped up and we have to calm her down a little.”
Shimko confirmed that scoring is up this season for Throndson, who also provides top-notch defensive play.
Harris agreed with her coach on those aspects.
“She’s amazing,” Harris said of Throndson. “She can really shoot the ball and plays great defense and drive. She’s a great all-around player.”

Shimko pointed out that Harris was 11 points away from 1,000 for her career.
Harris said she wants to make a decision Friday on where she wants to play in college. She has visited Concordia Chicago, North Park, Illinois College, Moraine Valley and Truman.
But what has helped Throndson? She was blessed with having the ability to hit long-range shots when she was younger. She has also kept up with working on building that skill.
“I work a lot outside of practice and I work with the coaches to find my shot,” she said.
While Throndson enjoyed watching those old Michael Jordan highlights, WNBA star Caitlyn Clark is now on her radar as well.
“She can shoot it from anywhere on the floor,” Throndson said. “I love watching her play.”

Algerian Boxer Admits To Having XY Chromosomes And Commits To Hormonal Treatments
Algerian Boxer Admits To Having XY Chromosomes And Commits To Hormonal Treatments
With the start of the Winter Games, a story this week resurrected a controversy from the last Summer Olympics. Previously, Olympic officials and pundits denounced those who objected to Algerian boxer Imane Khelif competing as a woman, saying that she was born a female. Female boxers withdrew from the competition rather than fight Khelif. Now, the boxer has admitted to having XY chromosomes and is taking hormone treatments to lower testosterone levels for the next Olympics.
At the time, IOC chief Thomas Bach said: “We have two boxers… who were born as women, raised as women, who have passports as women, who have competed for many years as women. And this is a clear definition of a woman.”
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev explained the IBA’s decision to disqualify Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting and Algeria’s Imane Khelif from the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships. While there remains confusion on the testing used by the IBA (or the reliability of those tests), it issued this statement:
“Based on DNA tests, we identified a number of athletes who tried to trick their colleagues into posing as women. According to the results of the tests, it was proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes were excluded from competition.”
Various media also did their own “fact checks” with outlets like USA Today stating that the “outcries from anti-trans celebrities and politicians” were based on false claims and the boxers were born women.
NBC also cited “attacks from anti-LGBTQ+ conservatives online who claim they’re transgender.” It stressed that the IBA could not be trusted since the IOC banned the group. (IBA was banned for corruption and financial-related issues).
I wrote about the controversy, criticizing the lack of consistent testing and simple confirmation of the XY chromosomal allegation.
Khelif still insists on competing against female boxers and added:
“Doctors and teachers decide. We all have different genetics, all different hormone levels. I’m not a transsexual. My difference, it is natural. I’m like that. I did nothing to change the way nature did to me. That’s why I’m not afraid. For the next Games, if you have to take a test, I will submit to it. I have no problem with that. I already did this test. I contacted World Boxing, I sent them my medical record, my hormonal tests, everything. But I had no answer. I’m not hiding, I’m not refusing testing. What I don’t understand is why we want to make my story so bigger.”
Notably, Khelif previously filed a criminal complaint against JK Rowling and Elon Musk for cyberbullying. It is another example of how free speech is being eviscerated in Europe through the criminalization of political speech. I cannot find a record of the complaint’s status.

Trump administration denies Illinois appeal for disaster relief; Pritzker calls decision ‘politically motivated’
The Trump administration has denied the state of Illinois’ appeal for a disaster declaration that would have unlocked federal assistance to thousands of residents affected by heavy rains and flooding last summer, a decision that Gov. JB Pritzker denounced as politically driven.
After a bout of severe storms through July and August, the state — alongside the city of Chicago and Cook County — had requested federal aid for survivors and public repairs. However, President Donald Trump in October denied Illinois’ application while approving other states’ requests for aid, a divide that primarily bowed to party lines.
The state appealed the denial on Nov. 21.
But on Saturday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which dispenses disaster aid, reaffirmed its initial decision, stating that supplemental federal assistance wasn’t warranted in this case, the state’s Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security announced in a news release Monday. The second denial specifically applies to federal aid requested for residents across Cook, Will, Kane, McHenry and Boone counties who were affected by storms that swept the region from Aug. 16-19.
Heavy summer rains displaced residents, left thousands without electricity, led to collapsed ceilings from water damage, flooded basements and roadways, overflowed rivers, broken boilers and other large appliances, and triggered ground stops at Midway and O’Hare International airports.
Pritzker in a statement lambasted the second denial as a “politically motivated decision that punishes thousands of Illinois families in a critical moment of need.”
“Playing politics with disaster relief funding is a new low,” he said, “even for the Trump Administration.”
In recent years, as climate change has fueled more intense events from flooding to wildfires, the federal government has taken on a larger financial responsibility for natural disaster recovery. But as far as who gets aid and who doesn’t, the Trump administration’s decisions have mostly fallen along party lines, The Associated Press reported last year.
After approving aid for Alaska in the fall, for instance, Trump touted the decision on social media, writing that it was his honor to deliver to a state he had “won BIG” in the past three elections. “I will never let you down,” he wrote.
Trump also approved disaster declarations for Nebraska, North Dakota and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota. Alongside Illinois, he denied requests from Wisconsin, Michigan and Vermont, as well as an appeal from Maryland after the state was denied a disaster declaration for flooding last spring.
“Ignoring the realities of widespread damage from the August 2025 severe storms,” Pritzker said, “speaks volumes about the federal government’s vindictive priorities and complete disregard for American livelihoods.”
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, also slammed the Trump administration this week after the state, which had likewise tried to appeal its initial denial, was refused assistance a second time. Evers, in a statement, called the decision “ridiculous.”
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in a statement said denial “undermines the very purpose of disaster assistance.”
“Our communities suffered real and lasting harm, yet the federal government continues to turn its back when help is needed most,” she said. “This is unacceptable and makes recovery harder for those who can least afford it.”

Rubio Slams ‘Unjust’ Jimmy Lai Sentence After Hong Kong Court Issues 20 Years
Rubio Slams ‘Unjust’ Jimmy Lai Sentence After Hong Kong Court Issues 20 Years
The high profile trial of Hong Kong’s foremost pro-democracy media tycoon wrapped up in December, whereupon Jimmy Lai was found guilty of sedition. He had long spearheaded huge protests and local Hong Kong media criticism of Beijing, but came under legal hot water and scrutiny with the passage of the notorious China-imposed national security law.
Finally, on Monday he was handed a very harsh 20-year prison sentence, resulting in outrage and condemnations aimed at China from across the globe. This is effectively life in prison, or even a death sentence, for the 78-year old who also suffers various health problems.
via AP/Al Jazeera: Jimmy Lai walks through the Stanley Prison in Hong Kong on July 28, 2023
This is after he’s already spent over five years in prison, and the trial alone lasted two years. He was first detained in August 2020 under Hong Kong’s Beijing-imposed national security law, in wake of large-scale student protests which at times brought whole sectors of the city to a standstill.
The city’s High Court said in its ruling: “Having stepped back and taking a global view of the total sentence for Lai’s serious and grave criminal conduct … we are satisfied that the total sentence for Lai in the present case should be 20 years’ imprisonment.”
The security law has been widely seen as the final nail in the coffin of Hong Kong’s long-running autonomy, and was a response to the major 2019 protests which were widely covered in international press reports.
China had long alleged a foreign intelligence ‘hidden hand’ behind the protests. This was in part due to student activists being in semi-regular communication with Western officials and NGOs, and sometimes even honored at events hosted in Europe or the US.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was swift to issue Washington’s response to the verdict on Monday, calling the sentencing an unjust and tragic conclusion.
“The Hong Kong High Court’s decision to sentence Jimmy Lai to 20 years is an unjust and tragic conclusion to this case,” Rubio said in the statement.
“It shows the world that Beijing will go to extraordinary lengths to silence those who advocate fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong, casting aside the international commitments Beijing made in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration,” the US top diplomat added.
Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, stated that “A sentence of this magnitude is both cruel and profoundly unjust.”
(1/5) Before sentencing was read, Jimmy Lai waved to the public gallery, made a heart gesture, and smiled while miming a bite of an apple.
After the decision was delivered, he again smiled broadly, waved, and made a fist-in-palm gesture toward the public seating. #AppleDaily pic.twitter.com/fnwEQefBaX

Western leaders, including of the US and Britain, are expected to lobby for his freedom, especially given that this is being viewed as ultimately a crackdown on Western values in influence on one of the world’s main financial hubs. But given sentencing has been accomplished, any such action to obtain his release will get harder and harder. China, on the other hand, said he encouraged violence and foreign subversion.

Ilia Malinin made history with his Olympic backflip, but some say the glory was owed to Surya Bonaly
MILAN — Ilia Malinin, the U.S. figure skater nicknamed the “Quad God,” became the first person to legally land a backflip on one skate in the Olympics — although one trailblazing woman pulled it off when the move was still forbidden.
The 21-year-old from Virginia delivered a crucial free skate on Sunday night for the winning American team, filled with his trademark quadruple jumps, and punctuated the gold medal-clinching performance with his dramatic backflip.
It’s a move known today as “the Bonaly flip” — named for France’s Surya Bonaly. Nevertheless, it is Malinin getting showered with praise, prompting many on social media to lament the way his achievement has eclipsed that of Bonaly, who is Black, and wondering if that is due to the color of her skin.
Ari Lu, 49, was among those on TikTok saying the figure skating world owed Bonaly an apology. Where Malinin is praised for his athleticism, Bonaly was judged, she told The Associated Press in a text message on Monday.
“Something a Black person used to be derided for is now celebrated when done by a white person,” said Lu, who is Black herself. She added that critiques of Bonaly at the time appeared related to her appearance rather than her skills.
A ban, and a backflip to end a career
The first person to pull off a backflip at the Olympics was former U.S. champion Terry Kubicka, in 1976, and he landed on two skates. The International Skating Union swiftly banned the backflip, considering it too dangerous.
Over 20 years later, at the 1998 Nagano Games, France’s Surya Bonaly flouted the rules and executed a backflip, this time landing on a single blade — an exclamation point to mark her final performance as a professional figure skater. The crowd cheered, and one television commentator exclaimed, “I think she’s done that because she wants to, because it’s not allowed. So good on her.”
Bonaly knew the move meant judges would dock her points, but she did it anyway. The moment would cement her legacy as a Black athlete in a sport that historically has lacked diversity.
New rules allow for the backflip’s return
For decades, Bonaly’s thrilling move could only be witnessed at exhibitions. That changed two years ago, when the ISU lifted its ban in a bid to make the sport more exciting and popular among younger fans.
Malinin, who is known for his high-flying jumps, soon put the backflip into his choreographed sequences for competitions. And on Sunday it was a part of a gold medal-winning free skate.
Bonaly, for her part, ended her professional career with a 10th place finish. Some argue the punishment of Bonaly back then and praise of Malinin today underscores a double standard that still exists in the figure skating world.
In a telephone interview from Minnesota, Bonaly told the AP on Monday that it was great to see someone do the backflip on Olympic ice, because skating needs to be taken to an upper level.
Regarding the criticism she received during her career, Bonaly said she was “born too early,” arriving on the Olympic scene at a time when people weren’t used to seeing something different or didn’t have open minds.
“I broke ice for other skaters,” Bonaly said. “Now everything is different. People welcome anyone as long as they are good and that is what life is about.”
Bonaly’s legacy
Before Bonaly there was Mabel Fairbanks, whose Olympic dreams were dashed by racist exclusion from U.S. Figure Skating in the 1930s, and also Debi Thomas, the first African American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. They and and others have paved the road for more representation in the sport.
But there are still few professional Black figure skaters, and none competing for the U.S. this year; popular skater Starr Andrews failed to make the team, finishing seventh at nationals. The team does include five Asian American skaters and Amber Glenn, an openly vocal LGBTQ+ supporter.
Malinin’s teammate, Amber Glenn, said that while she thinks backflips are fun and is interested in learning how to do one after she’s done competing, the three-time and reigning U.S. champion does not plan to do them any time soon.
“I want to learn one once I’m done competing,” the 26-year-old Glenn said. “But the thought of practicing it on a warmup or in training, it just scares me.”
Both the ISU and the International Olympic Committee have apparently begun to embrace Bonaly’s backflip, sometimes posting it to social media in conjunction with Bonaly’s own account.
“Backflips on ice? No problem for figure skating icon Surya Bonaly!” says one from last May. Another from November 2024 says: “Surya Bonaly’s backflip has been a topic of discussion, awe, and admiration for over two decades and continues to inspire young skaters to never give up on their dreams.”
Associated Press sports writer David Skretta contributed to this report.
