Un rincón de los Andes, último reducto de colibríes que son el emblema de la capital de Ecuador

QUITO (AP) — Perdido en medio de los Andes ecuatorianos hay un bosque antiguo con árboles que resisten al paso del tiempo, la voracidad de los hombres y que se han convertido en el último refugio de una minúscula especie de colibríes, el Zamarrito Pechinegro (Eriocnemis nigrivestis).
Allí está la reserva Yanacocha —laguna negra en español—, que entre sus secretos protege a esta pequeña ave emblemática de Quito de hasta 9 centímetros que de acuerdo con la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza se encuentra en peligro de extinción, con una población de entre 150 a 200 individuos, una de las más amenazadas del planeta.
Esta reserva fue creada por la Fundación Jocotoco hace 25 años con la finalidad exclusiva de proteger al Zamarrito Pechinegro, pero con el paso de los años “nos dimos cuenta de que no solamente conservamos al Zamarrito sino también todas las especies de flora, de fauna y el hábitat en general”, dijo a The Associated Press Paola Villalba, integrante de esa entidad conservacionista.
Este pequeño colibrí se distingue de otros de su especie porque alrededor de sus patas muestra unos pantalones blancos que contrastan con el pecho de un negro profundo y metalizado, mientras en el lomo y las alas pueden exhibir tonos verde-bronce, entre otros.
Estas pequeñas aves están amenazadas por la eliminación de los bosques donde se alimentan y viven debido a que los terrenos están siendo convertidos en áreas de pastoreo y cultivos.
Shirley Farinango, miembro de la Fundación Aves y Conservación, destacó que “sabemos que el Zamarrito Pechinegro está en peligro porque la presión en su hábitat es bastante” debido a que se desarrolla en una franja de los 3.000 a 3.500 metros de altitud y es donde hay “mucho cambio de uso del suelo para poner actividades productivas”.
Añadió que precisamente en esa zona “hacemos la recuperación de su hábitat o la conservación de su hábitat”.
Ese sector, 45 kilómetros al noroeste de Quito y a un costado del volcán Pichincha, se caracteriza por la densa capa de bosque montano que a menudo está cubierto de nubes, refugio ideal para la vida silvestre.
Esta reserva natural es uno de los últimos lugares donde aún revolotean estas pequeñas aves a las que muchos identifican como las más pequeñas hadas del bosque andino.

La premier japonesa disuelve el Parlamento y convoca a elecciones anticipadas

TOKIO (AP) — La primera ministra de Japón, Sanae Takaichi, disolvió la cámara baja del Parlamento el viernes, allanando el camino para unas elecciones anticipadas el 8 de febrero.
La medida es un intento de aprovechar su popularidad para ayudar al Partido Liberal Democrático (PLD), que ejerce el poder, a recuperar terreno después de grandes pérdidas en los últimos años, pero retrasará una votación sobre un presupuesto con el que se pretende impulsar una economía en dificultades y enfrentar el alza de los precios.
Takaichi fue elegida en octubre para que fuese la primera gobernante femenina de Japón. Sólo lleva tres meses en el cargo, pero goza de elevados índices de aprobación, de aproximadamente el 70%.

Takaichi espera ganar mayorías en las cámaras
Con su plan para elecciones anticipadas, Takaichi pretende aprovechar su popularidad con el fin de ampliar una mayoría gobernante en la cámara baja, la más poderosa de las dos cámaras del Parlamento japonés.

Josh Giddey’s return sparks Chicago Bulls to win over Minnesota Timberwolves. Can he revive a disrupted season?
MINNEAPOLIS — Josh Giddey polished off all the rust before he took the court at the Target Center.
Eleven games and 25 days had passed since the guard last suited up for the Chicago Bulls after a hamstring strain pulled the guard out of the rotation. But if Giddey felt any lingering awkwardness from his month away, he didn’t show it in Thursday’s 120-115 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Giddey missed his first three attempts from behind the 3-point arc before he finally gave up the shot altogether in the second half. But his bounce off the dribble returned almost immediately, empowering the guard to carve his path downhill to score 18 points in less than 13 minutes in the first half — 10 of which were created in the paint.
Although his scoring cooled in the second half, Giddey’s impact couldn’t be denied. The guard sprayed the ball around the court for six assists. And when shots stopped falling in the fourth, Giddey found a way to force the issue to the free-throw line, where he scored nine of his 21 points.
“I felt good,” Giddey said. “It felt like normal basketball. When I got out there tonight, it was nothing new. … I didn’t feel rusty. It didn’t feel like I’d been out too long.
Due to a strict limit on his playing time, Giddey did not start. Coach Billy Donovan said the medical team set Giddey’s minutes restriction at 24 minutes; he ultimately went 2 minutes, 2 seconds over that guideline. Holding Giddey out of the starting lineup almost allowed the Bulls to retain their two-big rotation — which features centers Jalen Smith and Nikola Vučević — without sacrificing the defensive presence of Matas Buzelis and Isaac Okoro.
The Timberwolves can present a defensive nightmare for the Bulls — a dueling center duo balanced by high-level shooting guards, all revolving around the weighty gravitational pull created by Anthony Edwards. While the Bulls still leaned on hefty minutes from Smith — who scored 17 points — he struggled to handle his defensive matchup with Julius Randle, who put the smaller center on skates in the half-court on course to scoring 30 points.
It quickly became obvious the Bulls couldn’t survive when Edwards — who finished with 20 points — occupied the court with any of their non-defensive guards, relying heavily on Okoro and Ayo Dosunmu to handle one of the toughest defensive assignments in the league. But the Bulls opted to close without any of their defensive wings on the court, opting to keep Buzelis out of the closing rotation for the second time in two weeks.
After falling behind by 14 points in the first half, the Bulls took control in the second and led until the final seven minutes. The Timberwolves began to sling 3-pointers and slam dunks, but the Bulls took those punches on the chin, holding off the onslaught by forcing second-chance points and drawing fouls.
White slid into the path of Randle with 2:17 to play in the fourth quarter, drawing a charge that fully deflated the Timberwolves’ attempts to hold their rally. It took nearly two more minutes for the Bulls to regain the lead off a fast-break layup from Tre Jones, who scored 12 points in his home-state return.
“There was a real resiliency by the group,” Donovan said. “It started to get away from us. We got down by maybe five after being up, but we kind of kept grinding the game and kept trying to make plays.”

Giddey’s return reunified the Bulls around their primary starting rotation — and, most importantly, reunited the guard with Coby White. This duo was meant to serve as the primary catalyst for the Bulls offense. But before Thursday, Giddey and White had played together in only 16 total games, which accounted for just more than one-third of the season. They had tallied only 300 minutes on the court together as a result.
Without context, that might seem like a decent chunk of minutes.
“Hey, that sounds like a lot low-key,” White joked after Sunday’s blowout win over the Brooklyn Nets.
But in comparison, Giddey played nearly twice as much with every other starter — 410 more minutes with Vučević, 242 more minutes with Buzelis and 218 more minutes with Okoro.
The Bulls have posted a net minus-2.4 rating this season. That number improves slightly to minus-0.7 with Giddey and White on the court. Neither player is a megawatt star like Edwards — Donovan acknowledged as much before the game — but these are clearly the two best players on the Bulls roster.

The Bulls always will be better off with that duo on the court. And White feels his game is elevated with his partner in crime back in the rotation.
“He just makes the game easier — not just for me, but for everybody,” said White, who led the Bulls with 22 points. “His ability to put pressure on the rim is something that we’ve been missing. He’s the engine to our team.”
Despite the relatively long absence, Giddey experienced an ideal road to recovery. He did not experience pain or setbacks at any point in his ramp-up process and went through Thursday’s game without incident. Now, the guard can focus on the next step — redeeming his season after an 11-game disruption.
Before the injury, Giddey was making a strong case for a first All-Star selection. While he doesn’t rank in the top 25 of the league in any category, he flirts with a triple-double every night by averaging 19.2 points, nine assists and 8.9 rebounds. His seven triple-doubles rank behind only Nikola Jokić, who has 16.
But an ill-timed injury can derail even the best All-Star campaign. Giddey was not named to the All-Star starting lineup and is considered an outlier to be selected as a reserve in the Eastern Conference. Coaches select reserves from a list based on an initial wave of fan, player and media voting.
“I think, with the way he’s played, certainly he would deserve strong consideration,” Donovan said. “(For voters) it is kind of out of sight, out of mind. It’s been 10 or 11 games that he’s missed. That may be something that contributes to it. But I think if you look at his body of work up to that point in time, he certainly played at a really, really high level.”

The inaugural BRICS joint naval exercise, “Will for Peace 2026”, that unfolded off the coast of South Africa from January 9 to the 16 marked a significant and symbolic evolution for the bloc but not without its hurdles. With the participation of naval forces from China, South Africa, Russia and Iran in the first multilateral military exercise under the BRICS, its location near the strategic chokepoint of Simon’s Town, SA – a crucial nexus between the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans – is a deliberate projection of presence into vital global trade arteries.
Previously, these nations have engaged in bilateral and trilateral exercises. However, “Will for Peace 2026” is distinctly different. Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe said it is a milestone as the first formal exercise within the BRICS framework itself.
The exercise stated objectives of deepening military exchanges, improving collective response capabilities to maritime threats, and safeguarding the security of trade routes and sea lanes. With an exercise curriculum, featuring anti-terrorism drills, hostage rescue, ship recovery and maritime assault maneuvers, covers a wide spectrum of potential disruptions.
For BRICS nations, the ability to conduct complex joint operations enhances their strategic autonomy, ensuring that vital sea lanes are not solely under the protection or potential control of traditional Western powers. In this way it is a move to “de-risk” their maritime security from the foreign policy whims of others.
Thus, it would seem the nascent institutionalization of defense cooperation moves BRICS beyond an economic dialogue forum into the realm of tangible security coordination.
Asserting Maritime Multipolar Sovereignty?
The BRICS maritime exercises occur against a backdrop of escalating and evolving US piracy threats that increasingly blur the lines between criminal acts and geopolitical coercion. Recent years have seen sophisticated hijackings and attacks targeting vessels from states the US has sanctioned like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela — some of them being China bound — all BRICS/BRICS+ partners.
This is a concerning trend of vessel seizures that target nations already under intense Western sanctions. The theft of tankers linked to Iran, Russia, and Venezuela points to a dangerous new paradigm where maritime crime becomes a tool for applying indirect pressure or for profiteering from geopolitical isolation.
“Peace Will 2026” then signals an intent to develop a bloc-specific capacity to secure member states’ sovereign assets, ensuring they are not solely reliant on Western-led coalitions whose political priorities may conflict with their own.
These nations, all key partners within the expanded BRICS/BRICS+ framework, find their critical energy exports uniquely vulnerable on the high seas. Hence the possible wish to develop an independent capacity to deter, intervene in, and resolve such incidents, ensuring that the bloc’s members’ assets are not sitting ducks against western pressure.
Although, this naval initiative is not necessarily an explicit declaration of hostility toward the United States, but rather a manifestation of a multipolar world in action. In a world where U.S. sanctions, unilateral actions, or naval posturing can disrupt economic lifelines, having a parallel cooperative security mechanism provides a counterweight capable of responding to threats that these nations themselves define, whether they be piracy, terrorism, or the coercive use of naval power by any state.
Decoding BRICS Peace Will 2026
However, to interpret this exercise solely as the birth of a unified naval bloc opposing the West is an oversimplification with the most significant limiting factor being internal fragmentation and lack of synchronicity. BRICS is not a monolithic alliance with a shared security vision but a consortium of often competing interests.
The unfolding “Will for Peace 2026” exercise has swiftly transformed from a display of BRICS unity into a stark revelation of its inherent tensions and the punishing realities of global alignment. South Africa’s eleventh-hour decision to relegate the visiting Iranian naval contingent from active participants to mere observers exposes the fundamental contradiction at the heart of the bloc’s ambitions and a wariness to US pressure. While aiming to project strategic autonomy from Western-led security structures, Pretoria found its symbolic gesture colliding with the hard calculus of national interest. The threat of jeopardizing its crucial trade benefits under the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), currently up for renewal, proved far more powerful than the allure of a consolidated anti-Western front.
This diplomatic reversal lays bare the bloc’s internal fractures, not only does it show South Africa’s precarious balancing act, but it also points to a potential failure of coordination, with reports suggesting the Iranian invitation was extended by a maverick general without full presidential sanction. Consequently, what was intended as a landmark demonstration of a multipolar maritime alternative may instead become a case study in the limits of such partnerships, demonstrating how Western economic leverage can swiftly unravel symbolic military posturing and forcing a reluctant host to choose between ideological companionship and economic survival.
The absence of India from these inaugural drills is very telling as the country is a major maritime power with its own tensions with China and strong ties to Western security initiatives like the QUAD.
Similarly, other new members like the UAE and Saudi Arabia maintain deep, strategic security relationships with the United States.
Consequently, “Peace Will 2026” serves multiple, overlapping purposes, at its core, it is a functional capacity-building exercise addressing real security gaps, particularly for sanctioned states. But also, it is a powerful piece of political performance, for China can show its leadership and normalize its far-sea naval presence, for Russia, it demonstrates strategic partnership despite isolation over Ukraine, while for South Africa, it affirms a “non-aligned” foreign policy. Its ultimate aspiration, however, is undeniably strategic of laying the groundwork for an alternative system of trade security guarantors.
“Peace Will 2026” is thus a pilot project led by its most geopolitically aligned members, not a demonstration of full-bloc consensus. While the current exercise involves only four of the ten BRICS members, it sets a powerful precedent. For global trade, this could eventually mean more actors with the capability to secure chokepoints and patrol routes, potentially reducing reliance on a single power.

Stan Kroenke, the billionaire sports magnate who owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and England’s Arsenal FC, has quietly ascended to the top of America’s private landownership rankings, controlling more than 2.7 million acres following a blockbuster off-market acquisition in December, according to The Land Report.

The deal saw Kroenke purchase over 937,000 acres of ranchland in New Mexico from the heirs of Teledyne founder Henry Singleton, marking the largest single private land transaction in the U.S. in more than a decade, according to The Land Report’s 2026 ranking of the nation’s 100 largest landowners.
The noncontiguous parcels, focused on cattle and horse operations, vaulted Kroenke from fourth place into the No. 1 spot, surpassing the Emmerson family’s 2.44 million acres of timberland through Sierra Pacific Industries, Liberty Media’s John Malone at 2.2 million acres, and former CNN owner Ted Turner’s 2 million acres, Fox Business reports.
Kroenke, who built his fortune in real estate development before expanding into professional sports, has assembled his sprawling portfolio – primarily ranching and grazing land – across the American West and into Canada over decades.
Key holdings include the 560,000-acre Q Creek Ranch in Wyoming, the historic 535,000-acre Waggoner Ranch in Texas, Montana’s Broken O Ranch, Nevada’s Winecup Gamble Ranch, and British Columbia’s Douglas Lake Ranch, according to The Land Report.
How staggering is Kroenke’s total land holdings?
Well, it now exceeds the size of Yellowstone National Park and equates to roughly 2 million football fields, according to Fox Business.
Notably, Microsoft co-founder and one-time Epstein pal Bill Gates remains the largest private owner of dedicated farmland, with approximately 275,000 acres of productive agricultural land across multiple states—far smaller in overall scale but notable amid rising interest in our food supply.

Oliver Moore’s shootout goal on his 21st birthday gives Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 win over Carolina Hurricanes
RALEIGH, N.C. — Oliver Moore scored in the shootout on his 21st birthday and Spencer Knight stopped five of six shots to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 win over the Hurricanes on Thursday night.
Connor Murphy, Ilya Mikheyev and Nick Lardis scored in regulation for the Hawks (21-22-7). Knight, who shut out the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night, made 28 saves in regulation and overtime for his second straight win.
Joel Nystrom, Jordan Staal and Jackson Blake scored for the Hurricanes (31-15-5), whose five-game home winning streak ended. Frederik Andersen stopped 18 shots and four more in the shootout.
The win capped an eventful night for Moore, who celebrated a milestone birthday. He was on the wrong side of a fight with Alexander Nikishin in the second period and then nearly won the game in overtime, but Andersen robbed him.
The Hawks led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but couldn’t put the Hurricanes away in regulation. The Hurricanes have yet to lose in regulation with top defenseman Jaccob Slavin in the lineup (8-0-3).
Murphy and Blake traded goals 82 seconds apart near in the back half of the third period to send it to overtime.
Andersen came up with a pair saves — on Moore and Frank Nazar, who played for the first time since suffering a broken jaw in a Dec. 20 road loss to the Ottawa Senators — in the third period to keep the game tied at 2. Andersen made two bigger saves — on Wyatt Kaiser and Moore — in overtime.
The Hurricanes tied it at 2 on Staal’s first goal since Dec. 19 at 9:16 of the second. The Hawks had taken a 2-1 advantage after Lardis’ goal at 4:35 in the second.
Mikheyev swatted in his own rebound at 11:12 in the first to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. It was Mikheyev’s first short-handed goal of the season.
Nystrom tied it with his first NHL goal at 12:50 in the first. The rookie defenseman has nine points in 36 games.
