There are games where West Aurora’s Travis Brown just has to take matters into his own hands.

Tuesday night was one of those situations as the Blackhawks were listless for the better part of three quarters. And the 6-foot-1 junior guard understood exactly what he had to do.

“I know I’m the best player on the court,” Brown said. “I have to take over whenever the team is down, whenever we’re not playing at our full potential.

“I have to step up on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.”

Brown definitely stepped up, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals as West Aurora pulled away for a 54-38 Upstate Eight West win over host Larkin in Elgin.

Jaden Matthews-Thomas finished with 14 points and Drew Lundberg added 12 for the Blackhawks (15-11, 9-1), who trailed by seven points in the third quarter after beating the Royals by 18 earlier in the season.

Brown took over from there, however. His back-to-back layups at the end of the third quarter, the second coming at the buzzer, gave the Blackhawks a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

West Aurora coach Mike Fowler wasn’t surprised Brown provided the much-needed spark.

“I was kind of waiting for anybody to do it, to tell the truth,” Fowler said. “We struggled to score from anywhere on the court — free throws, layups, anything. Travis decided to wake up a little bit.

“He was feeling a little sick to his stomach early on, but he found a way to get it done.”

Lawrence Sallis also got it done, pacing Larkin (8-17, 2-7) with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mac Irvin IV added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Royals put together a 14-0 run that spilled into the third, eventually taking a 31-24 lead.

“We stuck to the game plan,” Larkin coach Anton Wilkins said. “The game plan was to play team basketball, and that ball was moving. I’m glad we’ve got it on film.

“That means something when you’re able to play three quarters of basketball against the top team in the conference.”

Brown, however, then grabbed the steering wheel for West Aurora. He scored the final two baskets of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth.

“He gave us a little spark there to score the basketball,” Fowler said. “We really needed that. It was looking rough there. He got some turnovers, got some easy baskets.

“We got the lead at the end of the third quarter, and after that, we just kept playing.”

It’s not like Wilkins didn’t see it coming. When Brown gets going, however, it’s hard to stop.

“He’s gotten better every step of the way,” Wilkins said. “We played very solid defense in the first half, and he made great reads, great decisions.

“He knocked down those midrange jump shots. They were beautiful.”

Brown confirmed that the key to the comeback was defense. West Aurora held Larkin to 13 second-half points. Brown’s relentless pressure and speed were a huge part of that.

“It gives everybody else energy,” Brown said. “That’s just the type of player I am. My teammates know the type of player I am and they feed off my energy.”

Teams place the majority of their focus on Brown coming into games. That hasn’t stopped him from being a frontrunner as the conference’s player of the year for a second straight season.

“He’s just a ballplayer,” Fowler said. “That’s what he does. He has a lot on his plate. Other teams know that. We know that. He just continues to press forward.”

That added pressure doesn’t negatively affect Brown, either. It’s quite the opposite, actually.

“I look at it as respect,” Brown said. “I know they’re coming after me every game. They see what type of player I am. It gives me confidence. I go into every game like I’m that type of player.”

Dear Eric: For Christmas my husband and I travel a few hours and stay at a hotel near our son’s family.

There is a man that works there readying the breakfast buffet. Each Christmas he gets dressed in a very festive outfit. And he mistakenly thinks that trying to bear hug strange hotel guests coming in for breakfast is a good thing to do.

The first year he caught me totally off guard and he gave me such a bear hug, he actually hurt me. This year, when I saw him coming, I had enough time to block and crouch to get away from him. Even with that defensive move on my part he did not get the message, and he was still able to get in a sideways bear hug.

One gentleman stepped back and firmly told him that he did not hug, and he does not want to be hugged by a perfect stranger.

I don’t want to be unkind, but his hugging of strangers is inappropriate.

I understand that it was Christmas and I am not a nasty or harsh person, and I do have a good sense of humor and fun but regardless I find his behavior inappropriate. Do you think I am being too hard on this person, and do you have any tips you can pass along that can help to avoid this kind of physical invasion of personal space? Or should I just mention it to the front desk and let the chips fall where they may?

Dear Nice: Plain and simple, you have the right not to be touched in ways that you don’t want to be touched. So, it’s appropriate – and not unkind – to stop him in his tracks, or even to preempt the hug by saying something like “I notice that you hug people, tomorrow at breakfast, please skip me. That’s not something that makes me feel comfortable.”

It’s also fine to talk to management. It doesn’t have to be a formal complaint, per se. They undoubtedly know about his tradition and have given him the go ahead. So, it might be helpful to ask them to remind him to ask permission of guests first. Or even something like, “I’d love to keep enjoying my stays here, but I don’t want a hug. A little over a month later, I ran into Jaxsen again and he mentioned (with a bit of gusto and flair, I might add) that this guy had liked me. I was flattered, but I didn’t think to ask for his contact information at the time.

Now I’m wondering if and how I should follow up and get the guy’s contact information. I could easily get Jaxsen’s number from a mutual friend, but I’m hesitant to reach out to him just to request someone else’s phone number and turn him into the “middleman.” To top things off, it’s almost been a month since I last saw Jaxsen. Is there some way I can ask without getting into awkward territory, or should I just let it go?

Dear Jumping: I say just reach out to Jaxsen and get the information and don’t worry about the awkward factor. It’s obviously still on your mind and it seems, at least a month ago, it was on Jaxsen’s mind. There’s no harm in saying, “a while ago you mentioned your friend’s interest. I’d love to get his number if you don’t mind.” Short and simple.

Perhaps you fear that Jaxsen will judge you. I would offer that he went through the trouble of bringing up his friend to you, unprompted. So, a connection between the two of you is probably what he wants.

But what matters most is what you want. We live in a disconnected age. It can seem strange to ask others to help us make connections, but that’s still crucial now, perhaps even more so than before. Wanting anything, expressing any sort of enthusiasm or vulnerability, could be described by some as awkward or even cringe-worthy. DePaul guard Layden Blocker stripped Bryce Hopkins on a drive and raced the length of the court for a layup to make it a six-point game, prompting the fans at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday night to spring to their feet.

For that moment, with 3 minutes, 35 seconds to play, it looked like maybe the Blue Demons could make a run at an upset against No. 22 St. John’s.

But St. John’s coach Rick Pitino, pacing the sidelines in his black suit, called a timeout, and the Red Storm buckled down. Hopkins, an Oak Park native and Fenwick graduate, responded with his own layup, and St. John’s scored eight of the game’s next nine points on the way to a 68-56 win.

It was the third straight loss for DePaul (12-11, 4-8 Big East) and broke a four-game winning streak at Wintrust Arena on a festive night as the Blue Demons retired the jersey of former All-American Rod Strickland in front of 4,595 fans. DePaul was coming off a tough loss at Xavier, in which it let an 18-point, second-half lead slip away.

But Blue Demons coach Chris Holtmann thought his team showed mettle in its second meeting of the season with the Red Storm. St. John’s won the first 79-66. Pitino said he believes Holtmann is doing the right things with the program because his team played so hard.

“All in all, the fight is there,” Holtmann said. “I’d be real concerned if it wasn’t. That’s always something you’re testing as a coach, what’s our fight? We had a great practice yesterday. What’s our competitiveness? What’s our spirit as a group right now? It’s really good right now.

“But yeah, it’s a tough stretch. It’s a tough business for all of us, so if you’re not tough and tough-minded, you’re going to struggle, and I think we’ve got a group that’s going to respond well.”

St. John’s (17-5, 10-1) won its eighth straight game ahead of its first meeting with No. 3 UConn at Madison Square Garden on Friday. The Red Storm last lost exactly a month ago to Providence. Pitino said his players never looked ahead to the UConn game.

“Never even mentioned it,” Pitino said. “I just stressed this was a much bigger game than Connecticut, much bigger. If we lose this game tonight, it really hurts us. If we lose to UConn, it doesn’t hurt us.”

Neiko LeFlore brings a football attitude to the basketball court for Oak Forest. He was a star receiver/running back/kick returner for a Bengals team that reached the Class 5A semifinals.

But in the winter season, sometimes that mentality gets LeFlore in trouble. The junior guard has been working on calming down a little bit.

“I have to control my emotions sometimes,” LeFlore said. “In a big game, I have to stay in control. We’ve been having a lot of heated, close games lately and I feel like I’ve been doing better with it.”

LeFlore did a great job staying composed and running the show for Oak Forest in an intense game Tuesday night. He scored 13 points to help the visiting Bengals pull off a 55-53 South Suburban Blue overtime win over Lemont.

Hayden Noha led Oak Forest (19-8, 10-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds and also scored the game-winner with three-tenths of a second left in OT.

Noha broke open underneath the basket off an inbounds play and converted a layup.

“That play was working the whole game so we decided to go back to it and it worked again,” Noha said. “It felt great. Beating Lemont was better than me hitting the game-winner.

“We don’t like Lemont — and they beat us in baseball last season.”

Gary Manso added eight points for the Bengals, while Aiden Barnett contributed seven points and Enoch Olukolade pulled down nine rebounds.

Zane Schneider led Lemont (14-11, 8-2) with 23 points, including a 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation that forced overtime. Ryan Crane scored 12 points, while Luke Glotzbach finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

LeFlore, meanwhile, feels he benefits from bringing some of what he’s learned in football to the basketball court.

“The toughness transfers over,” LeFlore said. “For me, defense comes first and is the biggest aspect of basketball for me. The offense just comes in when it can.”

Oak Forest coach Tyshaun Cobbs appreciates that mentality, especially in a point guard.

“Neiko’s our engine,” Cobbs said. “When he’s good, we’re good. When he’s bad, we struggle. In this game, he got us off to a really good start.

“Sometimes, he gets a little emotional with calls and stuff, so I’m in his ear all the time. We have a really good relationship. He drives the bus for us. It’s a lot of pressure on a junior’s shoulders, but he’s doing a great job with it.”

LeFlore indeed had the hot hand early, scoring eight points in the first quarter.

“Neiko brings pretty much everything for us,” Noha said. “He’s the point guard, takes care of the ball and gets us into our offense. He’s been hitting threes lately, which has been unlocking our offense more.

“He’s been cool-headed lately, which is better.”

About that. LeFlore pointed out that he’s taking advantage of certain moments in the game to relax himself.

“When the other team is shooting free throws, I just stand at half court, take a couple deep breaths and slow down,” LeFlore said.

Oak Forest trailed 53-48 in OT before scoring the final seven points on Manso’s 3-pointer, Barnett’s steal and layup and Noha’s winner.

LeFlore had to watch the final play from the bench after he fouled out with 31 seconds left.

“I was mad, but I knew I had to cheer my team on,” he said. “When I saw the play, I was like, ‘Whoa.’ Hayden is nice. I love my big man.

“Beating Lemont in football and then basketball feels great. It’s kind of like winning two wars. We hate Lemont.”

LeFlore confirmed that he has a hard time choosing his favorite sport between football and basketball. But when it comes to the latter, it’s nights like Tuesday that fuel his passion.

“The intensity of the game, playing inside with student sections yelling, it’s just fun,” LeFlore said.
