When Michigan football calls, Libertyville’s Jack Treutelaar listens. ‘This is actually happening.’
Libertyville senior Jack Treutelaar’s chosen position doesn’t garner much attention.
But the 6-foot, 220-pound Treutelaar knows there’s a market for long snappers. That was confirmed last week, when he received an offer from Michigan. He committed the next day.
“There’s a part of me that still doesn’t believe it, but once I posted it on social media, that’s when I thought, ‘This is actually happening,’” Treutelaar said. “It’s been a dream of mine to play Big Ten football, and to be able to go to that type of school with that kind of tradition, I can’t describe how great it is.”
Treutelaar’s commitment capped a whirlwind recruitment that didn’t even begin until January. Although he was rated as one of the top prospects among long snappers in his class, he started the new year with only an offer from Toledo. But much of that staff had left for Kansas State, where a long snapper was already in place.
Treutelaar also had discussions with several other programs, including Illinois and Purdue, where his father, Justin, was a long snapper, but nothing concrete transpired.
Treutelaar vividly remembers taking a phone call from Kerry Coombs, Michigan’s new special teams coordinator, as he sat in his car in his driveway. The two sides quickly got to know each another, and then over a four-day period beginning Jan. 27, Treutelaar received an offer, committed, traveled to Ann Arbor for a tour and announced his decision on social media.
“Of course I was getting a little nervous, but in the end I knew it would work out,” Treutelaar said. “Specialists usually get picked up last, and it’s gotten more complicated now with the portal and so many coaches taking new jobs. I knew I’d end up somewhere.”
Treutelaar had good reasons for such confidence. Due in large part to his father’s background, Treutelaar began long snapping informally as a young child. Justin Treutelaar, a 1997 Libertyville graduate who was in the same incoming class at Purdue as former NFL quarterback Drew Brees, coached Jack through middle school, at which point they decided it would be better to learn from other people.
“It was probably when he was around 5 years old that we started doing some rudimentary training, just getting down some basics,” Justin Treutelaar said. “You could tell from a very early age that he was going to be really good.”
Jack Treutelaar also had a successful three-year stint as a starting linebacker for Libertyville. Some of the skills he employed on defense made him a better long snapper.
“When it comes to long snappers, some schools want blockers, and some want cover guys, and Jack is known as a cover guy partly because of his linebacker skills,” Libertyville coach Tim Budge said.
“He had a really nice three-year career at linebacker, and a lot of coaches liked that about him. Return teams typically don’t block the snapper, so Jack can really exploit that with his speed and tackling ability. You couldn’t have written a better story on how it turned out.”
Sure enough, Treutelaar’s ability to get downfield to make a tackle is something Coombs referenced in talks that led to the offer. Treutelaar also has the typical tools, including ultrafast hand-to-hand snap times and pinpoint accuracy.
Justin Treutelaar likened the mechanics of long snapping to those used by golfers. The slightest alteration can cause something to go astray, which is magnified when everyone in the stadium expects each snap to be perfect.
“Even when we’re working out in the backyard, we film his snaps from the front and side and send it to a couple of his coaches,” Justin Treutelaar said. “The average person couldn’t see what’s wrong, but when you have even one little hitch, you need someone to see and fix it, and then you’re right back where you need to be.”

Jack Treutelaar said he has grown comfortable with the pressure to perform.
“Bad snaps happen to everyone, but you have to have a goldfish memory about it,” he said. “I try to have a smile on my face as I’m running out onto the field, and I have my presnap routine that puts me in a good mental space.”
Committing to Michigan puts Treutelaar in a good mental space too. He and Libertyville senior offensive lineman Myles Batesky, a Harvard recruit, had a signing ceremony at school on Wednesday.
“It mostly feels like a sigh of relief,” Treutelaar said. “To be able to get an education from such a great school with such a great football program and to be done with recruiting is really nice.”

The immediate focus in markets today is on tech slumping again, rotating from JGBs, then gold, silver and other metals. Yet despite the scale of market moves — around a trillion dollars of paper losses, as ‘Bill Gates stated: “The majority of AI companies will fail”-– few writing about it understand the sector. It is, to quote Chamberlain, “A quarrel in a faraway land between people of which we know nothing.” That line echoes far more broadly and deeply.
US-brokered Ukraine-Russia peace talks in Abu Dhabi saw a “productive” first day yesterday. That’s as the EU agreed a €90bn loan for Ukraine, funded through joint debt, much of which is to buy arms. However, a UK minister noted long delays to rearmament because it’s “a bigger task than many people outside defense realize.” The FT says officials believe Russian spy spacecraft have intercepted unencrypted communications from Europe’s key satellites. It’s claimed China is funding 60% of Russia’s invasion and Moscow “can only maintain this war because China is essentially bankrolling it.” One report even says Russia is using neural chips to turn live pigeons into drones. In short, it’s not purely threats to Ukraine, or Russian GDP, or current weapons that Europe needs to pace itself against. Much, much more spending could be needed.
Tomorrow sees US-Iran talks held in Oman, despite a change of venue, Iran nearly backing out, and the US shooting down an Iranian drone near an aircraft carrier. Markets are still hoping for ‘peace in our time’, but it takes no specialist knowledge to know that isn’t really true of the region. Indeed, there is still a strong local view that the talks are likely to fail, opening up a political path for a US and Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile plants, and perhaps the regime itself – which Iran pledges would mean a regional war.
Trump and Xi spoke ahead of his planned state visit in April. The US side stressed lots of deals to be done, including on soybeans; China stated Taiwan is the “most important” issue; in the background, as Bloomberg puts it, “‘Lone Wolf’ Takaichi Wants to Build a Bold, Outspoken Japan.”
For those expecting détente, note China just warned Panama of “heavy prices” to pay after Hong Kong’s CK Hutchinson saw its contract to run ports at either end of the Panama Canal quashed. That was Donroe Doctrine lawfare taking de facto control of a critical global trade chokepoint. Elsewhere in LatAm, Costa Rica just saw a pro-Trump president elected.

In geoeconomics, the European Parliament unfroze the EU-US trade deal, but a vote is not likely until March, as Von der Leyen tries to seal a security and trade deal with Australia. Yet Oz matches the UK in finding rearmament hard, is a long way from Europe, and part of AUKUS – recall the French submarine debacle? Moreover, an FTA won’t float many boats, and even with one, Europe doesn’t jump the queue for resources, smelt them, or teleport them home.
The key thing to focus on is control of resources, upstream and midstream. Even those who don’t understand AI grasp it needs A LOT of cheap electricity, copper, and rare earths. In that regard, the White House is proposing a critical minerals trade zone to 50 countries, including the EU, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to curb China’s dominance – as Beijing may stockpile copper after restricting exports of silver. The US just pledged hundreds of billions of capital into the mining sector, with its Exim Bank leading the way; is seeing state stakes in such firms; and now physical deals – the DRC is to ship copper to Saudi Arabia and the UAE through a US-backed partnership with Mercuria Energy Group Ltd.
The proposed bloc would share a price floor for key inputs as well as a common tariff vs. China. As Vice President Vance put it, “We want members to form a trading bloc among allies and partners, one that guarantees American access to American industrial might while also expanding production across the entire zone.” In other words, shift industry back to the US – but also expand industry across the bloc rather than buying cheap downstream goods from China.
Understand that this means global decoupling, starting with upstream and midstream; locks countries into a US system vs China; and the only alternatives are China; to build one’s own mines and smelters, if so blessed – as Glencore just cancelled investment in a Canadian copper smelter due to regulatory uncertainty; or to gain the hard power to get scarce supplies outside both the rival systems.
We are seeing a realpolitik 19th-century model emerge to power the technology of the 21st – as the Hong Kong press note, ‘The AI race: US and China defence sectors emerge as key battlegrounds.’ Indeed, Nvidia’s AI chip sales to China have just been stalled by a US security review: KYC measures to prevent chips heading to the PLA.
Yet even as von der Leyen announced that the EU will work with the US on the critical minerals front, with all it implies, new friction stems from France and Spain. The former just raided the Paris office of X; the latter proposed a social media ban for under-16s and legislation to make the CEOs of tech platforms criminally liable for failing to remove illegal or hateful content, and for using algorithmic amplification. Telegram founder Durov stated the Spanish proposals would make it a “surveillance state”, and Elon Musk labelled Spanish PM Sanchez a “tyrant”; Spain retorted that Musk poses a “threat to democracy.”
This year’s Munich Security Conference (February 13-15) is likely to see a stronger US attack on EU regulation of US social media platforms that last year’s, already a heart attack for EU officials who had no idea what was looming in Greenland. Could the US tell Europe (and the UK and Australia, with turmoil in their government and opposition, respectively) that they either accept glasnost, i.e., freedom of speech no matter how offensive, alongside a US reverse perestroika of a state-backed upstream and midstream (then, slowly, downstream) decoupling from China, as part of a US Warsaw Pact military protection… or they can go their own way on all of them?
Meanwhile, this all means economic models assuming a free flow of ‘aggregate supply’ vs. demand are wrong. Metals join energy –where the Hong Kong press also notes, as we had predicted, that ‘China’s cheap oil flows under strain as US ramps up Iran, Venezuela pressure’– in being the pivot variables that macro forecasts revolve around. Central banks need to take that into account as much as analysts and politicians.
In that regard, even though the top Republican on the Senate Banking committee says that Fed Chair Powell hasn’t “committed a crime,” so may stay around longer (and potentially, and unusually, even after his stint as Chair ends), temporary Fed governor Miran just resigned from his concurrent White House role, which might imply he expects to extend his stay at the FOMC. If so, it would be alongside Fed Chair Warsh, who also doesn’t think economic models do anything useful, and neither does much of how we do central banking now. Presumably, like any good head of Gosbank, he fully grasps what the US grand macro strategy is re: upstream, midstream, and downstream production, and how inflation increasingly rests on the back of “A quarrel in a faraway land between people of which we know nothing.”

¿Las multitudes llenarán las arenas, pistas y estadios a pesar de las lentas ventas anticipadas de boletos? ¿El controvertido lugar de deslizamiento y la principal arena de hockey se sentirán terminados tras los retrasos en la construcción? ¿Los locales seguirán más interesados en el fútbol que en los deportes de nieve y hielo?
Las respuestas a estas y muchas otras preguntas que han ensombrecido la preparación de los Juegos Olímpicos de Milán-Cortina están a punto de ser respondidas.

“Creo que tomamos la decisión correcta al tener unos juegos más dispersos”, afirmó la nueva presidenta del COI, Kirsty Coventry. “Pero ha añadido —y creo que todos podemos decirlo muy abiertamente y con honestidad— ha añadido complejidades adicionales”.
Complejidades a las que los organizadores olímpicos tendrán que acostumbrarse porque este es el primero de varios Juegos de Invierno organizados con el mismo modelo.
Los Juegos de los Alpes Franceses de 2030 ni siquiera tienen una ciudad anfitriona en su nombre. Lo mismo para Utah en 2034; y probablemente para una candidatura de Suiza —el único candidato— para 2038, también.
“Es una conversación mucho más amplia”, comentó Coventry al evaluar los pros y los contras del nuevo modelo. “Creo que inicialmente, todos pensamos, ‘Oh, bueno, simplemente lo haremos un poco más disperso, porque eso es más sostenible’”.
Adaptarse al nuevo modelo va más allá de la competencia.
La ceremonia de apertura también se extenderá por múltiples ubicaciones, con desfiles de atletas al mismo tiempo en Milán, Cortina, Livigno y Val di Fiemme. Habrá dos pebeteros encendidos, uno en Milán y otro en Cortina.

Lindsey Vonn: ‘Habría sido más divertido si estuviéramos todos más cerca’
La esquiadora estadounidense Lindsey Vonn, en sus quintos Juegos Olímpicos, tiene sentimientos encontrados sobre la nueva fórmula.
“Quiero decir, estoy en Cortina, así que realmente no hay nada de qué quejarse. Estoy muy feliz de estar aquí. Es uno de los lugares más hermosos del mundo. La construcción llega hasta el último momento
El centro de deslizamiento en Cortina fue reconstruido en contra de los deseos del COI, que prefería utilizar una sede existente para bobsleigh, luge y skeleton en la cercana Suiza o Austria.
La pista de deslizamiento en sí está terminada, probada y lista. Pero las áreas circundantes de la pista aún están en construcción. Afortunadamente para los organizadores, ha nevado toda la semana en Cortina.
“Obviamente, afuera (de la pista) todavía hay algunas pequeñas cosas”, comentó el luger italiano Dominik Fischnaller. “Pero la nieve lo cubrirá, así que estamos bien para los Juegos”.
Un teleférico hacia el centro de esquí alpino en Cortina también sigue sin terminar, lo que demorará el acceso de los espectadores a las carreras.
La construcción de la principal arena de hockey en Milán —que cuenta con una pista de hielo más pequeña de lo habitual— llegó justo hasta las últimas horas (el hockey comenzó a jugar el jueves) y aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer.
“Entendiendo que los Juegos Olímpicos son un evento masivo durante un tiempo muy limitado, habrá diferentes desafíos que tendrás que superar”, señaló la capitana del equipo de hockey femenino de Estados Unidos, Hilary Knight. “Así que, ya sea que el hielo esté perfecto o no, estamos aquí, estamos listos para jugar”.

Ministro de Interior de Ecuador anuncia extradición desde Panamá de empresario acusado de corrupción

QUITO (AP) — Once meses después de su captura en Panamá, Leonardo Cortázar, un empresario ecuatoriano acusado de integrar una red de delincuencia organizada, será extraditado al país andino, anunció el jueves el ministro del Interior, John Reimberg.
Cortázar está vinculado al caso denominado “Encuentro” sobre una trama de delincuencia organizada, corrupción y tráfico de influencias por el que en noviembre de 2024 fue condenado a 10 años de prisión Danilo Carrera, cuñado del expresidente Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023).
Cortázar arribará al país en los próximos días, anunció Reimberg en su cuenta de X, pero no precisó la fecha.
La fiscalía señala a Cortázar como operador de la empresa pública Corporación Nacional de Electricidad, donde supuestamente gestionaba cargos de manera irregular. Su juicio estaba suspendido porque se encontraba fuera del país desde 2022, pero fue capturado en Panamá en marzo de 2024.
El empresario apareció en una polémica fotografía en una piscina en Miami junto a Javier Jordán, otro empresario que enfrenta procesos judiciales en Ecuador y que fue vinculado a la investigación por el asesinato en agosto de 2023 del excandidato presidencial Fernando Villavicencio, quien había hecho pública la imagen.
En la fotografía también aparece Ronny Aleaga, exasambleísta de la organización política Revolución Ciudadana, quien se encuentra prófugo.

Wirtz comienza a cumplir con las expectativas en Liverpool

MANCHESTER, Inglaterra (AP) — Florian Wirtz tardó en encenderse en Liverpool. Ahora está en su mejor momento.
Una racha de seis goles en 10 partidos ha disipado el temor de que el volante alemán no podía con la intensidad de la Liga Premier. También puso de relieve las altas expectativas que pesan sobre los jugadores en la máxima categoría de Inglaterra y la demanda de éxito inmediato.
La atención se centró en Wirtz desde el momento en que se completó su fichaje procedente del Bayer Leverkusen el verano pasado por un monto que podría ascender a 156 millones de dólares. También el Manchester City estuvo entre los pretendientes de uno de los jugadores de mayor proyección en Europa.
Pero eligió a Liverpool, el campeón de la Premier League, parte de un espectacular gasto de 500 millones de dólares por parte del club de Merseyside al remozar su ataque con las incorporaciones de Wirtz, Alexander Isak y Hugo Ekitike.
Liverpool empezó la campaña como favorito para revalidar el título, pero las cosas no han salido según lo planeado para el técnico Arne Slot.

She added: “[Three] million pages of Epstein documents were just released by the DOJ and the allegations are SICK. If these allegations are false, Bill Gates should have no problem saying so under oath before Congress.”

The latest Epstein files, unleashed by the Department of Justice, include a 2013 email from the predator himself alleging Gates caught an STD after “sex with Russians girls” and schemed to slip antibiotics to Melinda without her knowing. Another 2017 email hints at Epstein blackmailing Gates over an alleged affair with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova.
Melinda’s response on NPR’s Wild Card podcast lit the fuse for Mace. Melinda said Gates and other Epstein cronies “need to answer to those things.”

Las solicitudes de ayuda por desempleo para la semana que terminó el 31 de enero aumentaron en 22.000 con respecto a la semana anterior, alcanzando las 231.000, informó el jueves el Departamento de Trabajo. Esto es significativamente mayor que las 211.000 nuevas solicitudes que los analistas encuestados por la firma de datos FactSet habían pronosticado.

UK leader Keir Starmer apologizes to victims of Epstein for giving Peter Mandelson an ambassador job
LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized Thursday to victims of Jeffrey Epstein for appointing Peter Mandelson as the U.K.’s ambassador to Washington despite his ties to the disgraced financier.
The prime minister said Mandelson had lied and “portrayed Epstein as someone he barely knew.”
To the victims, he said: “I am sorry, sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people with power failed you. Sorry for having believed Mandelson’s lies and appointed him and sorry that even now you’re forced to watch this story unfold in public once again.”
Starmer appointed Mandelson, a veteran politician, as ambassador to the U.S. in 2024. The prime minister fired him in September after emails were published showing that he maintained a friendship with Epstein following the late financier’s 2008 conviction for sex offenses involving a minor. Epstein died by suicide in a jail cell in 2019, while awaiting trial on U.S. federal charges accusing him of sexually abusing dozens of girls.
Starmer never met Epstein and is not accused of any wrongdoing. But the prime minister is under intense pressure over the appointment after newly released documents revealed fresh details of Mandelson’s close relationship with Epstein.
“I was lied to,” Starmer said. “It had been publicly known for some time that Mandelson knew Epstein, but none of us knew the depth and the darkness of that relationship.”

The newly released files also suggest that in 2003 to 2004, Epstein sent three payments totaling $75,000 to accounts linked to Mandelson or his partner Reinaldo Avila da Silva, now his husband.
Mandelson, 72, has been a major, and contentious, figure in the Labour Party since the 1990s. He twice had to resign from senior posts in previous administrations because of scandals over money or ethics.
He was chosen as ambassador because his trade expertise, network of contents and mastery of the political “dark arts” were considered assets in dealing with President Donald Trump’s administration.
Critics say Mandelson’s ties with Epstein made his appointment too risky and Starmer was, at best, naive.
“I think the prime minister has shown that his judgment is questionable,” Labour lawmaker Paula Barker said. “I think he has questions to answer. I think he has a very long way to go to rebuild trust and confidence with the public, and trust and confidence within our party.”

No public sign of a response to Savannah Guthrie’s message to her mother’s kidnapper
TUCSON, Ariz.— There was no public sign early Thursday of a response to NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s message to her 84-year-old mother’s kidnapper.
In a recorded video posted on social media Wednesday, Guthrie said her family is ready to talk but wants proof that Nancy Guthrie, who authorities believe was taken from her home in Arizona against her will, is still alive. Guthrie said her family has heard media reports about a ransom letter.
“We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” Savannah Guthrie said while reading from a prepared statement. “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”
Savannah Guthrie posts message to her mother’s kidnapper asking to provide proof she is alive
She was last seen around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, when she was dropped off at home by family after having dinner with them, the sheriff’s department said. She was reported missing midday Sunday after she didn’t appear at a church.
The family posted the message after police conducted a search in and around Nancy Guthrie’s home for several hours Wednesday.
Kevin Adger, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said investigators had been at the home earlier in the week for a couple of days and then turned it back over to the family with the understanding they could go back if they needed to.
“This is a follow-up investigation,” he said in reference to officials returning Wednesday.
Adger said the sheriff’s department was not commenting on the video released by the family.
Multiple media organizations reported receiving purported ransom notes Tuesday that they handed over to investigators. The sheriff’s department had said it was taking the notes and other tips seriously but declined to comment further.
The family’s message for Nancy Guthrie
Savannah Guthrie was at times emotional during the recording, with her voice cracking. She smiled and looked into the camera when addressing her mother directly, saying that the family was praying for her and that people were looking for her.
“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter,” she said.
Savannah Guthrie described her mother as a “kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light” and said she was funny, spunky and clever.
“Talk to her and you’ll see,” she said.
Guthrie was flanked by her sister Annie and her brother Camron who both also spoke. Annie called their mother their beacon and said they need her.
“Mamma, If you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you,” Annie Guthrie said.
No suspect identified
Authorities on Wednesday offered no detailed update on their search and their next news conference was scheduled for Thursday. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos’ office said detectives still were speaking with anyone who had contact with Nancy Guthrie last weekend but that no suspect or person of interest had been identified.
Nanos suggested there was video from some cameras, though he didn’t elaborate, adding: “That’s all been submitted and we’re doing our best with the companies that own those cameras or built those cameras.”
There were signs of forced entry at the home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood. Guthrie has limited mobility, and officials do not believe she left on her own. A sheriff’s dispatcher talking to deputies during a search Sunday indicated that she has high blood pressure, a pacemaker and heart issues, according to audio from broadcastify.com.
Jim Mason, longtime commander of a search-and-rescue posse in Maricopa County, isn’t involved in the search for Guthrie but said desert terrain can make looking for missing people difficult. He said it can be hard to peer into areas that are dense with mesquite trees, cholla cactus and other desert brush.
“Some of it is so thick you can’t drive through it,” Mason said.
Supporters around the country
A couple hundred people attended an evening vigil for Nancy Guthrie at a Tucson church where they heard prayers and placed lit candles on an altar. A priest prayed for God to comfort Guthrie and to bring her home to those she loves.
Afterward, Jeremy Thacker had tears in his eyes as he described the heartbreak and helplessness he was experiencing over Guthrie’s disappearance. He worked with Savannah Guthrie at a local news station and they shared losing their fathers at a young age. His own sister was kidnapped when he was young.
Thacker said he knew Nancy Guthrie to be sharp, grounded and earnest.
“We’re all holding our breath,” Thacker said.
For a fourth day Thursday, “Today” opened with Guthrie’s disappearance, playing the family’s video message in its entirety, but Savannah Guthrie was not at the anchor’s desk. NBC Sports said Tuesday that she will not be covering the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics “as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time.”
The “Today” host grew up in Tucson, graduated from the University of Arizona and previously worked as a reporter and anchor at Tucson television station KVOA. Her parents settled in Tucson in the 1970s when she was a young child. The youngest of three siblings, she credits her mom with holding their family together after her father died of a heart attack at 49, when Savannah was just 16.
