KaiJay Brown, a transfer from Simeon, keeps poise coming off bench for Lincoln-Way East. ‘Going to pay off.’

Midway through his first season at Lincoln-Way East, KaiJay Brown endured some struggles and saw his role change from a starter to a reserve.

Brown, a junior guard who transferred from Simeon, kept the faith. And kept working.

“I had a little slump, but I had to stay there mentally,” Brown said. “Coach (Luke) Yaklich told me, ‘Everything happens for a reason.’ I just trust Yahweh, my Father, and stay level-headed. I just keep shooting. I know the hours I put in and the work I put in is going to pay off.

“I never doubted myself for one second.”

Brown backed up his belief Tuesday night, coming off the bench to score 23 points and help visiting Lincoln-Way East pull off a thrilling 54-53 SouthWest Suburban Conference win over district rival Lincoln-Way Central in overtime in New Lenox.

Jaymon Hornsby, who finished with seven points, hit the game-winning jumper at the buzzer in OT for the Griffins (14-12, 8-6). Wes Shelby scored 12 points, while Aaron Stauffacher and Jonathan Aluyi chipped in with six points apiece and Stauffacher added six rebounds.

Nick Brzezniak led Lincoln-Way Central (18-9, 9-5) with 19 points, including 10 in overtime, and six rebounds. Alex Panos added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Micah Evans contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

Brzezniak’s free throw with five seconds left in OT gave the Knights a 53-52 lead before Hornsby delivered the heroics.

“I missed some free throws earlier,” Hornsby said. “I had to make it back up. When I got the ball, I was like, ‘I’ve got to go.’ There were a few seconds left. I had to go make a play. It went in. That was an amazing feeling.

“This is my team. Central beat us on a buzzer-beater last year. They beat us in OT earlier this year. It felt great to get one back.”

Brown was the biggest reason the Griffins were in position to win the game at the end.

Lincoln-Way East started sluggishly, to say the least, and trailed 7-4 after one quarter before Brown entered the game and scored seven points in the second quarter.

“It was a game changer,” Brown said. “I feel like I’m really a team player and I tried to get us all going.”

Brown was huge down the stretch as well, knocking down two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scoring six points in overtime.

“KaiJay’s going to be a really, really good player,” Yaklich said. “When he gets to 170 pounds, he’s going to be a monster next year. He’s growing every day.

“We put him on the ball screen in the fourth quarter and told him to get downhill. He made some big free throws in overtime, made the big floater. He stepped up.”

Brown confirmed it took him a little time to get used to his new environment, but he has settled in nicely.

“Being out in the suburbs, it’s so nice and beautiful out here,” he said. “The competition level and style of play is different. It took me a little while to adjust, but once I got going with my teammates, it was a breeze.”

Hornsby is sure glad to have him as a teammate.

“KaiJay’s a great shooter and a great guy to have on the team,” Hornsby said. “If you make the extra pass to him, he’ll always knock it down. He’ll always lift you up. He can take the point if I need him to also.

“He’s always working hard and I love playing with him.”

Yaklich credited Brown with accepting coaching and making adjustments to his game. Brown pointed out that he will always listen to Yaklich, a former head coach at Illinois-Chicago and an assistant at Michigan and Texas.

“I’m 110% locked in with coach ‘Yak,’” Brown said. “He gives me words of wisdom every say. He’s easy to trust. He’s already sent people to the league. That’s where I want to go.”

Billionaire Neil Bluhm donating another $50 million to Northwestern for heart care

Casino magnate Neil Bluhm and his family’s foundation are donating another $50 million to Northwestern Medicine to further expand and support cardiac care.

The money will go toward a Northwestern cardiovascular institute that already bears Bluhm’s name: the Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.

With the new gift, Bluhm will have donated $135 million over the last two decades to the institute, which started in 2005 with an initial $10 million gift from Bluhm. The institute provides care across 18 locations in the Chicago area.

“It really is a vote of confidence in what we did for the last 20 years and to help us prepare for the next 20,” said Dr. Patrick McCarthy, executive director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, of the money.

Specifically, the new dollars will go toward technology, research, recruiting physician leaders and additional fellowships to train physicians.

The money will also be used to increase the size of the Bluhm Heart Hospital, which now occupies four floors of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Galter Pavilion downtown. The heart hospital, which is part of the institute, opened in 2022 after a $45 million gift from Bluhm.

Northwestern is hoping to build a new tower with more than 200 beds on the campus of Northwestern Memorial in Streeterville. If beds are moved to that new tower, that could free up more space in the Galter Pavilion to expand the heart hospital, McCarthy said. Northwestern still needs state approval to construct the new tower.

“As much as we try to keep up with the demand for access, we’re aware that people are waiting too long to try to get in and so what we’re trying to do is hire enough people, create enough space, open enough slots, have enough (operating rooms), have all the staff that we need so we can keep up with it,” McCarthy said.

The money will also allow Northwestern to continue to drive discovery, said Dr. Clyde Yancy, chief of cardiology at the institute.

“We still face a scenario where conditions of the heart are going to affect Americans across the board more prominently than any other condition,” Yancy said. “We can’t rest, even though we’ve come a long way with heart disease. We can’t relax because there are still unanswered questions.”

Much has changed in cardiac care over the last 20 years and more changes will undoubtedly follow, McCarthy said, citing the growth of artificial intelligence as an example of how the field is evolving.

Much has also changed at Northwestern over the last 20 years.

In 2005, when the institute began, Northwestern Medicine only had one hospital — its downtown location. Now it has 11 hospitals.

Since 2005, the institute has grown dramatically. In its first year, the institute treated about 1,000 patients. Last year, it treated more than 48,000 patients.

“My main goal has always been to ensure that anyone who needs world-class heart care can get it,” Bluhm said in a Northwestern Medicine news release. “We made this possible 20 years ago in downtown Chicago and built on that when we expanded care into the suburbs. It has been one of my greatest honors to watch this program touch so many lives and I’m humbled to continue supporting this mission.”

Bluhm, a native Chicagoan, first met McCarthy when McCarthy was at the Cleveland Clinic, Bluhm said in a video posted on Northwestern’s website last year marking the 20th anniversary of the institute.

Bluhm had been experiencing pain when he exercised, and a friend suggested he call McCarthy. Bluhm recovered after having stents placed. Later, he was part of Northwestern’s effort to recruit McCarthy to Northwestern, he said.

“I felt that it would be important to the city that we have a great heart hospital instead of a situation where the wealthy were going to the Cleveland Clinic and everybody else was not getting as great treatment,” Bluhm said in the video.

Bluhm co-founded JMB Realty and is chairman of Rush Street Gaming and Rush Street Interactive.

Oswego East’s Desiree Merritt plays role of Chicago Bulls’ Scottie Pippen to perfection. ‘Hoop regardless.’

Oswego East’s Desiree Merritt has played alongside two of the program’s all-time greats in her four varsity seasons, meaning she was never the quote-unquote star player for the Wolves.

Current teammate Aubrey Lamberti is the program’s all-time leading scorer, while Maggie Lewandowski sits third. Yet here’s Merritt, Oswego East’s version of Scottie Pippen, with a chance to move past Lewandowski and finish second behind Lamberti when it’s all said and done.

The lack of recognition doesn’t bother the senior guard, either.

“I never really think about it too much,” Merritt said. “I’m just going to go out there and hoop regardless. We had Maggie, who did big things. Aubrey is the leading scorer.

“I’m just out here to play. I’m glad I had teammates like that to set the standard.”

Merritt’s time at Oswego East is winding down before she heads to Joliet St. Francis, but she delivered another signature moment Tuesday night with a game-high 24 points for the Wolves in a 54-25 Southwest Prairie West victory over crosstown rival Oswego.

She erupted for 17 of Oswego East’s 18 points in the second quarter and finished with 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocked shots for the Wolves (16-10, 9-4).

Lamberti also came through with 10 points for Oswego East. Destiny Hicks paced Oswego (13-17, 4-10) with six points, while Peyton Johnson added nine rebounds and six steals.

Merritt, meanwhile, followed up a rare stretch of going scoreless in the first quarter by making back-to-back 3-pointers in the second quarter — and it was game on.

“Crazy, I’ve never done anything like that,” Merritt said. “With the help of my teammates, obviously, I was able to do it. They were getting me the ball.

“I definitely knew I was hot after the second shot I made.”

Oswego East coach Abe Carretto has seen it before from Merritt plenty of times.

“Finally, she started hitting some outside jumpers there and she kept hitting them, which was nice,” Carretto said of Merritt. “As soon as she hit two in a row, I was like, ‘OK, she’s feeling it.’”

Former Oswego East standout Venita Parsons is now Oswego’s coach. She coached Merritt in seventh grade and saw this coming.

Oswego East’s Desiree Merritt (21) looks for an opening against crosstown rival Oswego during a Southwest Prairie Conference game in Oswego on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026. (Mark Black / The Beacon-News)

“I knew she was going to be a stud,” Parsons said. “Her work ethic is great. She gets her teammates involved. She takes opportunities when she has them. When you have a girl like that, who’s going to take over and put a team on her back, you have to be able to stop her.

“If you can’t stop her and she gets hot, it’s only going to get worse throughout the game.”

After her threes broke the ice, Merritt did what she does best by scoring in a variety of ways.

She hit a midrange jumper, nailed a runner in the lane, hit another three, converted a fadeaway in the lane and sank hit two free throws. By then, the Wolves led 26-13.

Carretto realizes that Lamberti and Lewandowski may have garnered more of the headlines, but he knows how much Merritt is respected by his colleagues.

“She’s not getting left behind because other coaches tell me how athletic she is and fantastic when she gets going like that,” Carretto said. “I personally think that when you talk about the star of the team, we’ve just had a lot of them.

“Her and Maggie and Aubrey are so close in everything they’ve done that there’s no way to pinpoint the star.”

Still, Merritt is hoping for some more turns in the spotlight next week in the regional. After Oswego East’s upset win last weekend over Naperville Central, Merritt and Co. are going in confident.

“If that doesn’t show us that we’re a high-caliber team, I don’t know what will,” Merritt said. “We played our butts off.”

Panic Ensues After Trump Orders CIA To Give 2020 Election Intel To ‘Stop The Steal’ Lawyer

Panic Ensues After Trump Orders CIA To Give 2020 Election Intel To ‘Stop The Steal’ Lawyer

President Donald Trump has instructed the CIA and other spy agencies to hand over intelligence related to the 2020 election, a bunch of (presumably panicked) US intelligence officials told Politico and NBC News

The records are to be handed over to Kurt Olsen – now a temporary government employee in the White House – who four years ago was involved in the “Stop the Steal” campaign to determine whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election via cheating.

Attorney Kurt Olsen during his opening statement in Kari Lake’s election challenge trial on May 17, 2023, in Mesa, Ariz.Mark Henle / USA Today Network via Imagn

And you know they’re freaking out by the way they tell us this…

“The administration last year hired Kurt Olsen, who more than five years ago took part in the “Stop the Steal” campaign that promoted baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, to investigate the 2020 election.” –NBC News

President Donald Trump has directed top U.S. spy agencies to share sensitive intelligence about the 2020 election with his former campaign lawyer, known for pushing debunked theories of electoral fraud, according to four people with knowledge of the effort. –Politico

Indeed:

The president has asked Mr. Olsen to look at intelligence related to the 2020 election and the agency is ensuring that he has the access necessary to do his work,” a CIA official told NBC in an emailed statement (probably right after hanging up with the reporter).

When asked about Olsen’s role, the White House told the outlet “President Trump has the authority to provide access to classified material to individuals as he deems necessary. The entire Trump administration is working together to ensure the integrity of U.S. elections.”

The admin did not specifically respond to questions about whether Olsen was focusing only on the 2020 election, or possible security threats to future elections.

The freakout comes after the FBI’s recent search of an elections center in Fulton County, Georgia – where they seized ballots from the 2020 election.

Now check out the tone over at Politico:

The decision to provide some of the government’s most sensitive spy material to Olsen is unusual, given that he has no known experience working with the U.S. spy community and only joined the Trump administration as a short-term special government employee in October 2025. Special government employees are supposed to work no more than 130 days during any period of 365 days, suggesting his time at the White House could end soon.

The first person said that Olsen has passed a background check and a polygraph exam. It is not clear how close Olsen is to completing his report on the 2020 elections.

Intelligence analysis is supposed to be nonpartisan, and it appears Olsen’s views on electoral fraud in prior U.S. elections are so deeply held that even some people close to the president question his ability to evaluate the material shared with him.

“This guy has no background” in intelligence, said the second person, a close Trump ally. Olsen “will find some super classified report, say it’s evidence of fraud, but really it’s just completely out of context.”

Olsen rose to prominence by working closely with Trump to undermine the results of the 2020 election under the slogan “Stop the Steal.” He urged several DOJ officials that year to file a complaint to the Supreme Court scrutinizing Trump’s loss, and even called the president multiple times during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol

Wow!

About That Raid

As we noted earlier Tuesday, an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Hugh Raymond Evans last month, which was unsealed Tuesday, lays out five categories of confirmed problems in Fulton County’s handling of ballots, raising questions that have simmered for over five years since Trump and his allies raised questions about the election in Georgia and other states where irregularities were alleged.

According to a report from Just the News, Evans filed the affidavit last month to establish probable cause for a raid that seized around 700 boxes of ballots from an Atlanta-area storage warehouse. The investigation stemmed from a referral by Kurt Olsen, President Trump’s election integrity czar. Evans interviewed roughly a dozen unnamed witnesses about allegations tied to the contested Georgia race, where Joe Biden edged out Trump by less than 12,000 votes in the official results.

“This warrant application is part of an FBI criminal investigation into whether any of the improprieties were intentional acts that violated federal criminal laws.”

Fulton County admitted it lacks scanned images of all 528,777 ballots counted during the initial count and of the 527,925 ballots tallied during the state’s first recount.

County officials also confirmed that during the recount, some ballots were scanned multiple times. Ballot images obtained through public records requests show identical markings appearing on duplicated images.

During the Risk Limiting Audit, hand counters reported vote totals for batches that didn’t match the actual votes inside those batches.

According to the affidavit, “The State’s Performance Review Board reported that Secretary of State investigators confirmed inaccurate batch tallies from the Risk Limiting Audit.”

China Inches Ahead Of US In Humanoid Robot Startups

China Inches Ahead Of US In Humanoid Robot Startups

The market for humanoid robots has been growing significantly recently.

In 2025, $2.65 billion was invested in humanoid robotics startups, more than in the years 2018 to 2024 combined, according to data published by the market research platform Tracxn.

This development indicates that investors now view humanoid robotics as a more mature and commercially attractive technology.

As Statista’s Tristan Gaudiat reveals in the chart below, China currently leads the field with 23 startups specialized in humanoid robotics, just ahead of the 22 U.S.-based companies.

You will find more infographics at Statista

While China and the United States are the clear epicenters for humanoid-robotics entrepreneurship, a second tier is led by India (12), ahead of several European countries: the U.K. (6) and Germany (5) stand out, followed by France (3).

Beyond these hubs, Statista’s chart also shows clusters in Australia (3), Japan (3), Austria (2) and Canada (2), suggesting that while interest is global, the densest startup ecosystems remain concentrated in a handful of markets.

The Chinese and American startup ecosystem is particularly notable in this field.

Chinese companies such as Unitree Robotics and Agibot are currently producing more humanoid robot models than any other country in the world (more than 5,000 each in 2025), while some of the best-known U.S. names, like Boston Dynamics and Tesla, are aiming to ramp up their production of robots for industrial and consumer applications in 2026 (Atlas and Optimus, respectively).

In Europe, current key players include Engineered Arts (U.K.) and Neura Robotics (Germany).
