President Donald Trump is directing federal emergency teams to respond to a sewage spill on the Potomac River, calling it a “massive ecological disaster” and blaming local leaders for not handling the crisis, which began nearly a month ago.
“There is a massive Ecological Disaster unfolding in the Potomac River as a result of the Gross Mismanagement of Local Democrat Leaders, particularly, Governor Wes Moore, of Maryland,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Feb. 16.
Moore’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s statement.
On Jan. 19, a section of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line collapsed, causing the failure of a 60-year-old, 72-inch concrete pipeline along the Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Over 250 million gallons of sewage poured into the Potomac River in one of the largest spills in U.S. history, according to University of Maryland researchers. Water samples collected at the site show high levels of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria that causes staph infections, researchers reported.
“People coming into contact with the impacted water or land are at risk of becoming infected with these bacteria, which can lead to serious health conditions,” said Dr. Rachel Rosenberg Goldstein, a microbiologist and assistant professor at the university.
Trump said the spill was the “result of incompetent local and state management of essential waste management systems.”
“It is clear local authorities cannot adequately handle this calamity,” Trump stated.
“Therefore, I am directing federal authorities to immediately provide all necessary management, direction, and coordination to protect the Potomac, the water supply in the Capital region, and our treasured National Resources in our Nation’s Capital City.”
Despite state and local leaders not asking for federal assistance, Trump said he “cannot allow incompetent local ‘leadership’ to turn the river in the heart of Washington into a disaster zone.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will play a key role in coordinating the response, the president stated.
FEMA and DHS are facing a partial funding lapse as Democrats in the U.S. Senate demand changes to immigration enforcement.

According to Virginia’s health department, the utility DC Water is handling repairs to the pipe, while Maryland has regulatory authority over the Potomac River for recreational advisories, water quality monitoring, and issuing bans on shellfish harvesting.
The Virginia Health Department was working with the Maryland departments of Health and the Environment during the crisis.
DC Water has stated that drinking water is not affected by the incident.
The nearest Virginia location using the Potomac River as a primary source of water is the city of Fairfax, with an intake located several miles upstream of where the sewage spill entered the river, according to Virginia.

President Donald Trump paid tribute to the late Rev. Jesse Jackson as a “good man” and “force of nature” but claimed the late civil rights leader “couldn’t stand” former President Barack Obama.
Mixing praise with petty digs, Trump claimed during his days as a New York real estate tycoon he was friends with Jackson, and he ticked off a few shared political priorities like Black economic empowerment zones and funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“He was a good man, with lots of personality, grit, and ‘street smarts,’” Trump wrote on his social media site. “He was very gregarious – Someone who truly loved people!”

“Jesse was a force of nature like few others before him,” Trump added.
Trump also asserted that Jackson, who made promising bids for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, should have gotten more credit for laying the groundwork for Obama’s victory as the first Black president in 2008, and suggested that the two legendary Black political leaders did not get along.
“He had much to do with the election, without acknowledgment or credit, of Barack Hussein Obama, a man who Jesse could not stand,” Trump said.
Jackson, a colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died overnight at 84. No cause was given in a statement from the Jackson family, but he had suffered from a rare neurodegenerative condition.
Tributes poured in for Jackson on Tuesday as the nation woke up to news of his death at home in Chicago.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, called Jackson “the people’s champion” and said he would forever “rest in power.”
“The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. was a legendary voice for the voiceless, powerful civil rights champion and trailblazer extraordinaire,” Jeffries tweeted. “For decades … he inspired us to keep hope alive in the struggle for liberty and justice for all.”
Bernice King, Dr. King’s youngest daughter posted a photo of Jackson with her late father, along with the caption: “Both ancestors.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was born seven years after Jackson’s trailblazing 1984 White House run, praised Jackson as a leader who “never stopped demanding that America live up to its promise.”
“He marched, he ran, he organized and he preached justice without apology,” Mamdani tweeted. “May we honor him not just in words, but in struggle.”

Presidente de Guatemala decreta Estado de prevención e instala plan operativo para seguridad

CIUDAD DE GUATEMALA (AP) — El presidente guatemalteco Bernardo Arévalo decretó el martes un estado de prevención en sustitución del estado de sitio que estableció durante 30 días para frenar la violencia de las pandillas, que contempla medidas menos rigurosas.
El estado de prevención fue publicado en el diario oficial y durará 15 días. Le permite a las fuerzas de seguridad tomar medidas para frenar la violencia, prevenir y reprimir perturbaciones graves a la paz y al orden público por parte de pandillas. Podrán limitar celebraciones y reuniones al aire libre, disolver por la fuerza cualquier reunión donde se hiciere uso de armas o prohibir la circulación de vehículos en lugares determinados.
El estado de sitio, que necesitó del aval del Congreso, era más rígido al permitirle a las fuerzas de seguridad detener a personas sin la orden de un juez.
El presidente dijo que el e stado de sitio que finalizó el lunes tuvo resultados positivos. Indicó que entre el 19 de enero y 15 de febrero se redujeron los homicidios a la mitad y se cortó la comunicación y coordinación entre pandillas. Según las autoridades, fueron censados más de 23.600 pandilleros logrando identificar a todos ellos.
El martes el presidente presentó además junto a los ministros de Gobernación y Defensa el Plan Centinela Metropolitana en un campo de fútbol público en la zona 18 de la capital guatemalteca, donde tiene mayor incidencia la pandilla Barrio 18. Busca dar seguridad en el departamento de Guatemala donde las cifras de criminalidad son más elevadas que en el resto del país.
Los operativos serán en conjunto entre policías y soldados en los barrios capitalinos además de continuar con acciones de prevención en prisiones para detener las comunicaciones entre pandilleros y evitar los ilícitos, dijeron autoridades.
“Cuando se trata de proteger a la población, el Estado no puede retroceder y nosotros continuaremos tomando las decisiones que sean necesarias para ir extendiendo la protección”, dijo Arévalo.
“En la zona 18 la normalidad ya no será definida por el miedo sino a través de la ley”, señaló el ministro de Gobernación Marco Villeda, quien explicó que el plan es para darle seguridad a “la gente decente, para quienes cumplen y quieren vivir en paz”.
Para quien “no quiera seguir las reglas debe atenerse a las consecuencias legales, operativas y reales”, acotó el funcionario.
A principios de 2025 Estados Unidos declaró a la Mara Salvatrucha como organización terrorista e hizo lo propio con el Barrio 18 en septiembre del mismo año. Ambas pandillas tienen presencia en varios países de Centroamérica.
En julio del año pasado, 10 de los líderes de Barrio 18 y la Mara Salvatrucha fueron trasladados a una cárcel de máxima seguridad bajo aislamiento, sin privilegios y vigilados las 24 horas del día luego de la matanza de siete personas en un funeral.
En respuesta, los reos provocaron motines y en octubre 20 presos se escaparon de una prisión, de los cuales ocho han sido recapturados. La fuga provocó el cambio de la cúpula de seguridad y la solicitud de Arévalo al Congreso para cambiar leyes y endurecer las penas a los pandilleros, lo que este último aprobó el mismo mes.
El 17 de enero varios reos tomaron, en forma orquestada, tres prisiones y retuvieron a más de 40 guardias como rehenes. Las autoridades se negaron a negociar con pandilleros que buscaban beneficios y traslados a otras prisiones.
Un día después de los motines, la fuerza pública retomó el control y liberó a los rehenes; entonces pandilleros dirigieron cinco ataques orquestados dejando 10 policías muertos y ocho heridos, el ataque más sangriento a la fuerza de seguridad pública desde su creación en 1997.

Congreso de Perú debate si destituye a presidente José Jerí por citas con empresarios chinos

LIMA (AP) — El Congreso peruano debatía el martes en una sesión especial si destituye al presidente interino José Jerí luego de que la fiscalía le abrió una investigación preliminar por presunta corrupción a raíz de las reuniones ocultas que mantuvo con dos empresarios chinos, de las cuales no informó oficialmente.
Si los legisladores presentes en la reunión del Congreso consiguen un voto más de la mitad de los asistentes, Jerí dejaría la presidencia a tan solo cuatro meses de haberla asumido y uno de los congresistas tendría que ser elegido como nuevo mandatario en un nuevo capítulo de la inestable política peruana. Los intentos para destituirlo ocurren a dos meses de las elecciones presidenciales.
El país sudamericano tendría un octavo presidente en casi una década. Desde 2018, tres han sido removidos por el Parlamento, dos renunciaron ante la posibilidad de ser destituidos y solo un mandatario interino terminó su mandato.
Jerí asumió el 10 de octubre luego de que su antecesora, Dina Boluarte (2022-2025), fue destituida en medio de una crisis impulsada por el alza de la criminalidad que sigue sin resolverse.
En octubre, Jerí era presidente del Congreso y, según la ley, le correspondía suceder a Boluarte, que no tenía vicepresidentes.
Si es destituido, los legisladores escogerán dentro del cuerpo legislativo a un nuevo mandatario que gobernará hasta el 28 de julio, cuando entregue el cargo al ganador de los comicios presidenciales del 12 de abril.
A su vez, Jerí volverá a su cargo de legislador hasta el 28 de julio cuando también asuma el nuevo Parlamento.
También podría ocurrir que los legisladores no voten por la destitución. El presidente es apoyado por el partido Fuerza Popular, liderado por la candidata presidencial Keiko Fujimori, el embajador de Estados Unidos en Perú, Bernie Navarro, y el gremio empresarial más poderoso.
La crisis que golpeó a Jerí empezó en enero cuando la prensa reveló que se había reunido varias veces —y sin registrarlo en sus citas como estaba obligado— con dos empresarios chinos, uno contratista estatal y el otro investigado por su presunta participación en un grupo involucrado en el tráfico de madera.
Jerí no logró convencer a sus críticos indicando que se reunió porque quería coordinar una festividad de amistad peruano-china, deseaba comer comida china y comprar caramelos chinos. La fiscalía lo investiga por los delitos de patrocinio ilegal de intereses particulares y tráfico de influencias en agravio al Estado.
También es indagado por otro caso de tráfico de influencias agravado luego que nueve mujeres que se reunieron con Jerí en los últimos meses en el palacio presidencial fueron contratadas en la administración pública.
Antes de asumir la presidencia, Jerí afrontó cuestionamientos que incluían el incremento de su patrimonio personal en más de 1.000% en 2024 luego de tres años como parlamentario. También se le archivó una denuncia por presunta violación sexual a una mujer que lo denunció ese mismo año.

ELGIN POLICE LAUNCH MISSING PERSONS PAGE
In an effort to keep the community informed and to generate as many leads as possible regarding active missing persons cases, the Elgin Police Department recently created a new missing persons page on its transparency hub.
To access the new page, go to epdopendata-cityofelgin.hub.arcgis.com and then click on the Missing Persons Investigations icon, according to the EPD Facebook page. Viewers will be able to see updates and follow the overall progress of ongoing cases.
Currently, the only missing persons case listed is Elgin resident Miguel Segura, 55, who was last seen in late November near State and National streets in downtown Elgin.

ESO MUSIC DIRECTOR TO HOLD COFFEE EVENT
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will be holding a coffee and conversation event with music director Chad Goodman from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 21, at the ESO’s business office, 20 DuPage Court, Elgin.
Earlier this month, the ESO announced that it had signed a new three-year contract with Goodman, who was hired in May 2023, according to a news release. He is the organization’s fifth music director since its founding in 1950.
Subscription renewals and sales for the ESO’s 77th season began Feb. 13. The six-concert series begins in October. Concerts are presented at The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin.
BLACK & WHITE ART SHOW SET FOR SATURDAY
The East Dundee Art Council’s third annual Black & White Art Show is set to take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in Willow & Birch, 324 N. River St., East Dundee.
Local artists submitted original works of art in black, white and gray hues, according to the East Dundee website. Paintings, drawings, photography, digital art and mixed media will be on display.
Artists were encouraged to work with a yellow accent color, in celebration of former downtown business Doederlein (cq) Lumberyard. That property is now owned by the village, which plans to redevelop the site. DeLoris (cq) Doederlein turned 90 in October and owned the business with the late husband, Fred.

The deadline to puchase for St. Patrick’s Day-themed apparel from Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790 is 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.
Items are available in adult and children’s sizes and range in price from $21 for some T-shirts to $79 for a hoodie, according to the website for the fundraiser. Purchases will be shipped by Wednesday, March 11.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Project Fire Buddies, a nonprofit through which firefighters offer support to children battling critical illnesses.

ELGIN POLICE LAUNCH MISSING PERSONS PAGE
In an effort to keep the community informed and to generate as many leads as possible regarding active missing persons cases, the Elgin Police Department recently created a new missing persons page on its transparency hub.
To access the new page, go to epdopendata-cityofelgin.hub.arcgis.com and then click on the Missing Persons Investigations icon, according to the EPD Facebook page. Viewers will be able to see updates and follow the overall progress of ongoing cases.
Currently, the only missing persons case listed is Elgin resident Miguel Segura, 55, who was last seen in late November near State and National streets in downtown Elgin.
