‘Heated Rivalry’ is embraced by fans — and players — at the Winter Olympics: ‘Hockey is for everyone’

MILAN — Olympic hockey knows all about big hits.

That now includes ” Heated Rivalry,” a gay hockey romance TV series in which two players from opposing teams carry out a secret, long-term relationship.

The steamy connection between the characters — Canadian Shane Hollander and Russian Ilya Rozanov — has attracted fans to both the show and the sport itself, with the NHL seeing a boost in ticket sales by one estimate.

The show’s impact was evident long before the Milan Cortina Olympics when co-stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie carried the Olympic flame. And it hasn’t stopped there. Athletes and fans from Canada and the U.S. are feeling the show’s impact.

Athletes recognize the phenomenon

Zach Werenski, a defenseman on the U.S. team who plays for the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, said the show has come up in conversation in the locker room.

“Everyone is saying how great it is, I just haven’t seen it yet,” Werenski told The Associated Press after a 5-1 victory over Latvia. “It’s definitely good for the sport of hockey. Whenever you can add more eyes to the game and have people talk about the game and talk about inclusivity, I think it’s just great for the sport.”

Jake Sanderson, another U.S. defenseman who plays for the Ottawa Senators, said he has heard about the show, but doesn’t know much about it. When asked how far off the NHL is from having an openly gay player, Sanderson cited Luke Prokop. In 2021, Prokop was a Nashville Predators prospect who became the first player signed to an NHL contract to come out, though he has not yet played in the league.

“You never know if that show (will) instill some confidence in some people,” said Sanderson, adding that any openly gay player would be fully accepted in the locker room. “I don’t think we would treat them any differently. They’re our teammate, we love them no matter what, and obviously embrace them, absolutely.”

Rachel Reid’s novel “Heated Rivalry” was published in 2019 as part of a series. The TV adaptation, originally developed for Canadian streaming service Crave, was the top-rated series on HBO Max in its first season. It has been renewed for a second season.

Its biggest fans at the Olympics may be the Canadian delegation.

For Chicago Pride Hockey, ‘Heated Rivalry’ is more than just a show

As part of the Olympic experience, athletes were gifted a potted plant. Many of the Canadians named theirs Shane or Ilya, according to the delegation’s lead press liaison, Tara MacBournie.

Canadian Alpine skier Kiki Alexander took the love a bit further, sharing on her TikTok that the village’s Canadian moose has been named Shane.

“If you know, you know,” she wrote.

Adam van Koeverden, a 2004 Olympic champion in canoeing who is now Canada’s secretary of state for sport, is a fan of the show.

“We’re the perfect country to be having the conversation and be putting that art out there that I think is advancing the conversation on diversity in hockey,” van Koeverden told AP at the Games. “Hockey is for everyone and ‘Heated Rivalry’ makes it clear.”

The show launched in Europe in January and is proving a surprise hit in Russia, despite the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ crackdowns. Because of the war in Ukraine, the IOC has allowed just a handful of Russian athletes to compete at the Milan Cortina Games as neutral individuals but no teams.

Fans of hockey and ‘Heated Rivalry’

Athletes aren’t the only ones riding the “Heated Rivalry” wave. Kim Sweet of Calgary, Alberta, is only on Episode 3 but is loving it.

“The show has me very intrigued,” Sweet, 50, said before entering the arena to watch Canada play Czechia last week. “How a very male-dominated sport has two guys having to work through the privacy of it all, and whether you ever want to come out.”

“It’s great having more eyes on the sport,” added Sweet, who describes herself as “a huge hockey fan.”

Angie Campos, a California resident, was also in attendance and wearing a sweatshirt featuring the jerseys of the show’s two main characters.

Campos is new to hockey, drawn to it by the series, and she isn’t alone. Weekly NHL hockey ticket sales saw a more than 20% rise after the show first aired in late November, according to data from ticketing platform SeatGeek. It saw no similar surge the same period a year earlier.

“The series didn’t just light up social media feeds, it may have sent fans straight to hockey games themselves,” SeatGeek said in its analysis Jan. 16. “While it’s impossible to attribute all of this growth to a single show, the timing is hard to ignore.”

Campos likened her newfound fandom and that of fellow “Heated Rivalry” viewers to the surge of female NFL fans after Taylor Swift started dating Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce and attending games.

“It just makes it a little bit more relatable and it has definitely opened eyes to a human side of competition,” she said.

More representation in hockey

Hockey is a rough-and-tumble sport with occasional fighting and hard hits, even in crucial games where a penalty can prove costly. Canada’s Tom Wilson and French player Pierre Crinon were ejected for fighting in Canada’s win on Sunday.

All the machismo and aggression make the rink — and hockey in general — an unlikely and provocative setting to explore the delicate feelings of forbidden love and taboos around male sexual orientation. No active NHL player has come out as gay in the century-plus existence of the league.

“Heated Rivalry” has been wildly popular among women, but men are starting to find the appeal.

At the Canada-France game, Christopher Ryan York, 20, said he has hopped on the bandwagon, too. It was hard not to watch the show given how popular it has become, he said, and he’s happy it’s creating new hockey fans.

“Anything to grow the sport, for sure,” he added.

His father Kevin York, 60, said he hasn’t seen the show, but can’t stop hearing about it back home in Alberta and believes it must be truly inspirational if it spurred a Canadian hockey player to come out as gay: Jesse Kortuem of Vancouver, who stepped away from the game at 17 for fear he wouldn’t be accepted, shared his coming-out statement on Instagram on Jan. 13.

“Something has sparked in me (ok — yes credit to #HeatedRivalry),” he wrote. “I thought I would share because I want to speak to the athletes out there who are still in the closet or struggling to find their way. I want you to know that there is hope and you’re not alone.”

Associated Press writer Jennifer McDermott contributed to this report.

Hyatt Executive Chairman Thomas Pritzker Resigns Over Epstein Ties

Hyatt Executive Chairman Thomas Pritzker Resigns Over Epstein Ties

Authored by Tom Ozimek via The Epoch Times,

Thomas J. Pritzker, the longtime executive chairman of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, announced his retirement effective immediately on Feb. 16, acknowledging what he described as “terrible judgment” in maintaining contact with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

Pritzker, 75, said in a statement released by the company on Monday that he will also not stand for reelection to Hyatt’s board of directors at the company’s 2026 annual shareholder meeting.

In a letter shared by the company, Pritzker said that “good stewardship also means protecting Hyatt, particularly in the context of my association with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, which I deeply regret.

“I exercised terrible judgment in maintaining contact with them, and there is no excuse for failing to distance myself sooner,” he said.

“I condemn the actions and the harm caused by Epstein and Maxwell, and I feel deep sorrow for the pain they inflicted on their victims.”

Hyatt’s board said in a separate statement it had appointed president and CEO Mark S. Hoplamazian to succeed Pritzker as chairman, combining the roles of chairman and CEO effective immediately.

“Tom’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Hyatt’s strategy and long-term growth, and we thank him for his service and dedication to Hyatt,” Richard Tuttle, chair of the board’s Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, said in a statement.

“The Board has engaged in thoughtful succession planning, and we are confident that Mark’s deep knowledge of Hyatt’s business, strong relationships with owners and colleagues, and proven track record as CEO of nearly two decades positions him well to serve as Chairman and continue driving Hyatt’s long-term success.”

Pritzker had served as executive chairman since 2004 and had been involved with Hyatt and its predecessor entities for more than four decades. During his tenure, the Chicago-based hotel operator went public, expanded its global footprint, and shifted toward an asset-light business model.

In his Feb. 16 letter to fellow directors, Pritzker described the company as being in a “strong and sustainable position” with a “world-class management team” and said he would turn his attention to his family foundation and other activities.

Neither Hyatt nor Pritzker detailed the extent of Pritzker’s contacts with Epstein or Maxwell, and there have been no allegations of criminal wrongdoing against Pritzker.

His resignation comes amid a wave of high-profile departures following the Department of Justice’s recent release of millions of documents related to Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and later found dead in a Manhattan jail cell. New York City’s medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.

Maxwell, a longtime associate of Epstein, was convicted in 2021 of helping recruit and groom underage girls for sexual abuse and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The released files show that Pritzker and Epstein exchanged friendly emails after Epstein was convicted in 2008 of soliciting a prostitute and procuring a child for prostitution.

In recent weeks, several prominent figures have stepped down from leadership roles after their names appeared in emails and other documents linked to Epstein.

Among them, Kathryn Ruemmler announced she would resign as Goldman Sachs’s general counsel after emails she exchanged with Epstein were made public. Ruemmler has said she regrets ever knowing Epstein and described her contact with him as professional.

Others who have left posts include talent executive Casey Wasserman, law firm chairman Brad Karp, and senior corporate and diplomatic figures whose communications with Epstein or Maxwell drew public scrutiny.

Tony Clark resigning as head of MLB players union as possible cap fight — and work stoppage — looms

TAMPA, Fla. — Tony Clark intends to resign as head of the Major League Baseball Players Association, a person familiar with union’s deliberations said Tuesday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because his decision, first reported by ESPN, had not been announced. The person said an announcement was likely later Tuesday.

Clark’s decision comes during an investigation by the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, New York, into One Team Partners, a licensing company founded by the union and the NFL Players Association.

The move was made ahead of an expected start of collective bargaining in April for an agreement to replace the five-year labor contract that expires Dec. 1. Management appears on track to propose a salary cap, which possibly could lead to a work stoppage that causes regular-season games to be canceled for the first time since 1985.

Clark, 53, is a former All-Star first baseman who became the first player to head the Union.

He last played in 2008 and was a member of the union staff when Michael Weiner was diagnosed with brain tumor.

He took over as union head when Weiner died in late 2013 and led players through negotiations that led to agreements in 2016 and 2022, the latter after a 99-day lockout.

Bruce Meyer, who was the lead negotiator under Clark in 2021-22, was promoted to deputy executive director in the summer of 2022 and is slated to again head negotiation.

Netflix Grants Warner Bros. One Week Waiver To Reopen Paramount Skydance Deal Talks

Netflix Grants Warner Bros. One Week Waiver To Reopen Paramount Skydance Deal Talks

Warner Bros. Discovery said in a press release that it will temporarily reopen talks with Paramount Skydance after Netflix granted a seven-day waiver, allowing WBD to address “deficiencies that remain unresolved and clarify certain terms of PSKY’s proposed merger agreement.”

“Netflix has provided WBD a limited waiver under the terms of WBD’s merger agreement with Netflix, permitting WBD to engage in discussions with Paramount Skydance (“PSKY”) (NASDAQ: PSKY) for a seven-day period ending on February 23, 2026, to seek clarity for WBD stockholders and provide PSKY the ability to make its best and final offer,” WBD said in the release.

It continued, “During this period, WBD will engage with PSKY to discuss the deficiencies that remain unresolved and clarify certain terms of PSKY’s proposed merger agreement.”

Paramount has been pressing a hostile, shareholder-directed tender offer for WBD, including its cable channels CNN and TNT, at $30 per share (all cash) after losing out to Netflix in a previous bidding war. The months-long takeover battle is over some of the entertainment industry’s most important intellectual property, including HBO, Superman, and Harry Potter.

WBD said a senior Paramount representative informed its board that Paramount would pay $31 per share if talks were to reopen.

After the limited waiver period, WBD said, “Netflix retains its matching rights as defined by the merger agreement.”

“Throughout the entire process, our sole focus has been on maximizing value and certainty for WBD shareholders,” WBD President and CEO David Zaslav said in the release.

Zaslav noted, “Every step of the way, we have provided PSKY with clear direction on the deficiencies in their offers and opportunities to address them. We are engaging with PSKY now to determine whether they can deliver an actionable, binding proposal that provides superior value and certainty for WBD shareholders through their best and final offer.”

WBD said its board “continues to unanimously recommend in favor of the Netflix merger” and has set March 20 for a shareholder vote on that deal, reached in December.

Paramount shares jumped nearly 6% in early trading, while WBD gained about 3%, and Netflix rose slightly.

The Associated Press

Russia Pounded By Biggest Ukrainian Drone Swarm Since January Ahead Of Geneva Talks

Russia Pounded By Biggest Ukrainian Drone Swarm Since January Ahead Of Geneva Talks

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday is reporting an overnight and early morning attack which marked the largest drone assault from Ukraine since early January.

Russian air defenses shot down more than 150 Ukrainian drones in the attack which included hundreds of UAVs sent in total, as officials from both sides are imminently expected meet in Switzerland for another round of peace talks.

via Reuters

According to the ministry, 79 drones were intercepted over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, 38 over annexed Crimea, and 18 over the Krasnodar region.

It is clearly among the biggest single wave of cross-border assaults since January 1st – when Moscow said it downed 168 unmanned aircraft in a similar attack.

Russian governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev announced that in Crimea a nine-year-old boy was hospitalized with minor injuries, and that there was significant damage to vehicles, apartment buildings, private homes, and gas pipelines due to the strikes.

Neighboring Krasnodar saw a fire erupt at the Ilsky Oil Refinery due to drone strikes. Ukraine’s military boated of hitting the refinery, as it is owned by the Kuban Oil and Gas Company, which Kiev has highlighted supports Russian military logistics.

Authorities in other regions reported no casualties or significant damage from the overnight attacks – though airports across over a dozen cities imposed temporary flight restrictions as the drone wave unfolded.

Russia’s Defense Ministry later into Tuesday morning said it shot down nearly 30 additional inbound Ukrainian drones.

As for the ongoing peace talks in Geneva, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told a press briefing not to expect much in terms of anything concrete today.

I don’t think we should expect any news today because, as you know, work is scheduled to continue tomorrow. We have no plans to make any statements or remarks,” he underscored.

Peskov explained on Monday, “This time, the idea is to discuss a broader range of issues, including, in fact, the main ones. The main issues concern both the territories and everything else related to the demands we have put forward.”

Russia’s delegation is led by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will represent the US at the talks, and they are coming off the indirect talks with Iran from earlier the same day, also happening in Geneva.

🇷🇺✈️🇨🇭Flight route of the Russian delegation led by Vladimir Medinsky to Geneva.

The aircraft avoided a direct route over most EU airspace and flew only through Italian airspace. As we noted yesterday, Italy was the most likely option — unlike the openly hostile Baltic states,… pic.twitter.com/zVoY46zO0W

— DD Geopolitics (@DD_Geopolitics) February 17, 2026

As for President Trump’s latest assessment, he told reporters aboard Air Force One, “Well, we have big talks.” He stated that “It’s going to be very easy. I mean, look, so far, Ukraine better come to the table fast. That’s all I’m telling you.”

He tends to go back and forth from month to month chastising either side, and apparently now the public pressure is back on the Zelensky government. Trump has been quieter of late when it comes to demanding that Ukraine quickly hold national elections, despite an apparent offer from the Kremlin to cease airstrikes deep inside Ukraine when the vote happens.
