Students, staff back West Side principal axed by school board

Gary West Side Leadership Academy students, parents, and staff members voiced surprise and shock over the school board’s decision not to renew the contract of Principal Carl Scott by a 3-1 vote.

Upset students walked out of school Friday and others questioned the move at the Feb. 19 school board meeting.

On Monday, Mayor Eddie Melton said he received about 10 calls from Scott supporters, as well. He said he plans to discuss the matter with the board and school leaders, although he has no authority over the schools.

He does have one appointment to the board, Glenn Johnson, who voted in favor of the nonrenewal, along with Danita Johnson Woods and Shontrai Irving. Angela Lockett was the lone “no” vote. Board chairman Michael Suggs was absent.

Schools typically don’t discuss personnel matters in public. Scott’s name didn’t appear on the Feb. 19 agenda, just the nonrenewal of a high school principal. West Side is Gary’s lone high school.

Senior Joel Moore, who is president of the student council, said students didn’t hear about the nonrenewal vote until the day of the meeting and many couldn’t attend.

“We were really upset. Myself and two other seniors wanted to get a protest going on,” said Moore, who credited Scott for helping him get a part-time job at Culver’s in Merrillville.

Carl Scott (Provided in 2022 by Gary Community School Corp.)

“He’s done so much for us and our community. For me personally, he fought for me to get scholarships. I’m at $10,000 now. I’m like, we gotta fight for him.”

Moore and friends spread the word of a noon walkout on Friday and several students took part. He said they deliberately marched to the central administration headquarters on the west side of the school.

“They haven’t heard our voices. Many of us have different stories about how Mr. Scott affected our lives.”

Moore said a second walkout was planned for Monday, but Scott asked them to cancel it.

On Monday, Superintendent Yvonne Stokes issued a statement saying the district was unable to share specific details regarding the decision not to renew the principal’s contract.

“We understand that leadership transitions can bring strong emotions from members of the school community, including students, staff, and families. We respect these perspectives and deeply value the engagement and voice of our community.

“Students have the right to express their viewpoints. However, demonstrations that substantially disrupt the educational environment — such as walkouts during instructional time — are not permitted. Students who engage in actions that disrupt learning will be subject to the guidelines outlined in the district’s Behavior Matrix,” Stokes said.

Assistant Principal Janora Holmes said she returned to West Side after a previous stint because of Scott. “It was very disturbing to see the nonrenewal…”

She said her son and his classmates praised Scott’s tenure.

“My son and his 2026 class believe their principal honed in on their academic abilities and respects their voice.

“The changes have brought an air of uncertainty and chaos.”

Angela Hamblin-Blakely, a teacher and girls basketball coach, also backed Scott.

“He leads with intentionality and focus with emphasis on instruction and academic alignment. Those things matter.

“Students deserve leadership and someone willing to make hard decisions to move the school forward.”

Scott couldn’t be reached for comment.

Former emergency manager Paige McNulty appointed Scott co-principal at West Side along with Brandi Herrod in 2022 after input from a selection committee that included students and parents. Herrod now works at the 21st Century Charter School in Gary.

Scott, a West Side graduate, has a master of arts degree in education from Indiana University Northwest.

7-year-old receives first key to village of Lynwood after life-saving 911 call

A 7-year-old girl was the first recipient in Lynwood’s history to receive a key to the village for a 911 call she made when her father fell.

Mia Dates called 911 last month after she found her father, Xavier, unconscious in their home after he fell down the stairs and hit his head on the steps, he said. When he regained consciousness, he said he heard Mia giving dispatchers their address. She waited for them while her mother, Star, was at work.

When paramedics arrived, Dates said they told him how brave and strong his daughter was.

Mia said she was nervous to pick up the phone and call officials. She said she felt excited to receive the key ahead of Tuesday’s Village Board meeting.

Dates said he also was excited for his daughter and how she was being honored for her heroic act.

“The most important part is that we’re celebrating something good and we’re not here looking for her or something negative,” Dates said.

He was taken to Franciscan Health Dyer in Indiana for about seven hours. Dates said he experiences back pain and is out on medical leave, but is making a slow and steady recovery. He plans to return to work as a railroad conductor next month.

Village Hall was packed Tuesday with friends, family and residents as Mia was presented the key by Mayor Jada Curry. As Dates prepared to give a speech, he wiped away his tears at the podium and said “Mia, thank you.”

Star said when Mia was 3, she taught her what to do in case of an emergency, and said she was happy she listened.

Lynwood police Chief Gregory Thomas said he was thoroughly impressed with how Dates handled the call. He said it is a concern of his and the department that children don’t know what to do in such situations.

“For someone of her age to be so ready and to have such bravery is certainly inspiring to us all,” Thomas said.

“The youth should understand that the police are meant to help and protect them,” Thomas said.

He said Dates’ case is a good example. He said parents should inform their children what to do in case of emergencies and he credited Mia’s parents and others for making sure she knew how to respond.

Giving Mia the key, Thomas said, was to show young people what happens when they make good choices.

“Our youth need to understand that when you do right, and you do things, there is a chance that people would acknowledge you for those things,” he said. “This attention that Mia’s getting, hopefully, inspires others her age.”

Curry said the time to give Dates the key to the village was fitting because it is Black History Month. Also having it be presented by another woman is a good representation of leadership, too, she said.

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” Curry said. “So Mia seeing my face shows her the sky is the limit.”

With the recent death of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Curry said Dates’ act of bravery is something that Jackson would have hoped to see.

“I could only wish that he were here tonight to see that his journey meant something and that it continues to mean something because it paved the way for people like Mia to be bold, be brave, be fearless and become special human beings,” Curry said.

Dates also received an iPad from the village trustees, a Life Saving Award from Thomas and a Life Saving Award Certificate from fire Chief LaShaun Alston.

Monyã Lampkin, Dates’s aunt, attended to support her niece.

“When I first heard about it, I was nervous, like ‘Oh my God, she’s so young,’” Lampkin said. “Then after I heard the whole story, I was overwhelmed with proudness.”

Lampkin’s husband, Willie, said his wife kept telling him they had to go and see Mia be recognized.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for nothing in the world,” Willie said.

He, too, was proud of his niece. Mia wants to become a safety official when she grows up.

“I think, well, I know she’s gonna grow up to do great things,” he said.

Harvard sancionó posteriormente a Nowak.

Cuban Border Guards Kill Four People On American Speedboat

Cuban Border Guards Kill Four People On American Speedboat

The Cuban Embassy’s official X account reported that a Florida-registered speedboat illegally entered Cuban territorial waters. This prompted a maritime unit of Cuban border guards to intercept the vessel, after which a firefight erupted, leaving four people aboard the speedboat dead and six injured.

“The vessel, registered in Florida, United States, with registration number FL7726SH, approached to within 1 nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, in Cayo Falcones, Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara province,” Cuba’s embassy wrote on X, citing a note from the Ministry of the Interior.

The incident took place on Cuba’s north coast, near Cayo Falcones and the Corralillo area, along the edge of Santa Clara Bay.

The embassy included more details:

When a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops of the Ministry of the Interior, carrying five service members, approached the vessel for identification, the crew of the violating speedboat opened fire on the Cuban personnel, resulting in the injury of the commander of the Cuban vessel.

As a consequence of the confrontation, as of the time of this report, four aggressors on the foreign vessel were killed and six were injured. The injured individuals were evacuated and received medical assistance.

In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban state in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region.

Note from the Ministry of the Interior:

Tremaine Edmunds has permission to seek a trade. What it means for the Chicago Bears’ salary cap and needs.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Chicago Bears will have needs — not wants — at all three levels of their defense.

It has been obvious for some time the team has heavy lifting to do in the secondary with every safety on the 2025 roster coming out of contract. And the Bears have openly discussed needing to add to the defensive line.

Linebacker is a bona fide need, too, as the team made it clear Wednesday it will be moving on from Tremaine Edmunds, who led the defense in tackles last season despite missing four games with a minor groin injury.

A league source said the Bears have granted Edmunds permission to seek a trade during the NFL scouting combine. What does that mean? Edmunds’ camp will see if another team is willing to potentially flip a late-round draft pick in exchange for Edmunds, who is signed for $15 million entering the final year of his contract with none of that money guaranteed.

If a trade can’t be brokered, the Bears are expected to release Edmunds. Either move would create $15 million in needed salary-cap savings for 2026.

Edmunds, who turns 28 in May, was a first-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2018 and signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Bears in 2023 free agency. He has played in eight NFL seasons and was at the top of his game at the start of last season. He had 89 tackles, four interceptions, nine passes defended, one sack and three quarterback hits through the first 10 games before suffering the groin injury at the end of the Week 11 victory at Minnesota.

The list of free-agent linebackers is relatively thin, but it’s a weak class for free agency overall. The Green Bay Packers’ Quay Walker and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Devin Lloyd are at the top of the linebacker market. Edmunds probably would slot into the next tier if he’s on the market, so he likely would have options.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bears look to re-sign D’Marco Jackson, who will be an unrestricted free agent. Jackson got playing time filling in for Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, who is recovering from a broken leg.

There’s plenty of work ahead to outfit defensive coordinator Dennis Allen with a new depth chart for 2026.

“We feel a lot better about having the health of our secondary be a lot better this go-around,” coach Ben Johnson said Tuesday. “Last year, between Kyler (Gordon) and Jaylon (Johnson), we didn’t feel like we were at full strength there on the back end for the majority of the season. I think that’s going to help out.

“There’s ways we can generate more pass rush up front. That’ll help out significantly as well. It’s something we’re looking at — how do we upgrade the personnel in certain spots? There’s a number of guys that are up, contract-wise. There will be a retooling there to a degree. I know D.A. is looking forward to the opportunity to get his hands on these guys one more time and see what that looks like.”

Lake County congressional reps, toymaker react to Trump speech: ‘Just more of (his) tired old grievances and lies’

Five days after he was lumped into a group called “major sleazebags” by President Donald Trump, Rick Woldenberg sat in the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives in awe of where he was, listening to the president’s State of the Union address as the guest of U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Highland Park.

Woldenberg, a Highland Park resident, is the CEO of Vernon Hills-based Learning Resources, Inc. The company sued the Trump administration in April over the tariffs Trump imposed and their potential impact on the company.

Schneider announced on Feb. 19 that Woldenberg would be his guest at the State of the Union. The following day, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 in determining that the tariffs imposed were unconstitutional. In the wake of the decision, Trump criticized some of the justices and called the people who brought the lawsuit “major sleazebags.”

Woldenberg did not seem bothered by the slight as he recounted his experience at the State of the Union Tuesday night.

“As I looked at the surroundings, I was proud to be in the place that symbolizes our democracy,” he said after the speech. “I was having an out-of-body experience.”

Meanwhile, members of Congress representing Lake County had more criticism than praise for Trump’s State of the Union address, criticizing the president’s inability to be a unifying leader.

U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Highland Park, right, and Rick Woldenberg, the congressman’s guest at the State of the Union Tuesday in Washington, chat in Schneider’s office before heading to the House of Representatives chamber. (Office of U.S.Rep. Brad Schneider)

Not all members of the Lake County delegation were in the House Chamber. Schneider and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, were there, but U.S. Rep Jan Schakowsky, D-Evanston, and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Chicago, made other plans.

Nonetheless, local Republicans liked what they heard.

Though Trump did not mention Woldenberg during his speech, he was critical of the Supreme Court justices who voted that the tariffs he imposed in April were unconstitutional. He said he will continue imposing them, taking a different tack.

“And then just four days ago, an unfortunate ruling from the United States Supreme Court, it just came down,” Trump said in his speech. “So, despite the disappointing ruling, these powerful country saving, it’s saving our country the kind of money we’re taking in, peace protecting.”

Woldenberg said hearing Trump talk about the lawsuit his company filed challenging the tariffs contributed to his “out of body experience.” The litigation had nothing to do with politics, he said; it was about Learning Resources’ mission.

“We’re trying to help with our educational products to provide a good start for kids,” Woldenberg said. “We’re in our fourth generation. We’ve been making toys since 1916.”

Schneider said there were unifying moments near the start of the speech and at the end, but in between — the speech lasted 108 minutes, the longest State of the Union in history — there was plenty of criticism of Democrats and inaccurate statements.

Early in the evening, Trump honored the U.S. men’s gold medal-winning Olympic hockey team. The players walked onto the House floor to a standing ovation. At the end, Trump awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to two members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including Royce Williams, a Navy pilot from World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, who turns 100 on July 4.

(Kenny Holston/The New York Times via AP, Pool)

“Unfortunately, the rest of the president’s address was just more of (his) tired old grievances and lies,” Schneider said. “It’s obvious he has no serious plan to help hardworking Americans get ahead, no plan to lower the cost of groceries, to make it easier to buy a home or afford healthcare for their families.”

During his speech, Trump said the first year of his current term saw more jobs created than ever before. The record was in 2021 and 2022 as the country recovered from the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Schneider said manufacturing jobs declined last year.

Foster said he attended the speech out of respect for the office of the president, but not for Trump himself. He set a goal for his presence on the House floor, and it was reached in less than an hour.

“After five bald-faced lies, I did what I did last year and left,” he said. “He was in business in the 1970s, so he knew what he was saying was false,” he added, referring to Trump’s claim he cured the country’s record inflation.

Mark Shaw, a Lake County resident and the Republican state central committeeman for the 10th Congressional District, said in a text Tuesday night the speech was very “Reaganesque, and one of the finest speeches he has ever given,” referencing former President Ronald Reagan.

Shaw was also critical of the Democrats’ behavior.

“I also believe the Democrats’ refusal to stand for, and/or applaud, almost anything President said or did was disrespectful to the office of the presidency, the solemnity of the State of the Union, and a divisive demonstration for the American people,” Shaw wrote. “Their exhibition of disunity is what has caused our political discourse to become so toxic.”

Keith Brin, the chair of the Republican Lake County Central Committee, said in a text Tuesday night that he liked what Trump said about reducing the cost of living. It is part of the message of the local party for the upcoming November election.

“I appreciate the President’s focus on lowering costs for working families and improving the economy,” Brin said in the text. “That’s the number one priority for Lake County Republicans, and it’s the priority for our candidates.”

Schakowsky, who is in her last term, said in an email she could not attend last night, “and pretend everything is normal with families across my district.” Quigley chose to attend a virtual town hall in Barrington, according to his staff.

Yen Tumbles After Takaichi Nominates Two Prominent Doves To The BOJ

Yen Tumbles After Takaichi Nominates Two Prominent Doves To The BOJ

It’s not just Trump who is stacking his central bank with uberdoves.

After plunging yesterday following a Mainichi report that Japanese Prime Minister expressed concerns at more BOJ rate hikes, the yen has tumbled more, sending the USDJPY as high as 156.80 this morning, the highest since Feb 9, after the Takaichi administration announced two nominees to succeed the outgoing BoJ Policy Board members later this year, both of whom have a history of dovish commentary.

Toichiro Asada was presented as a successor to Asahi Noguchi (whose term ends on March 31st), and Ayano Sato has been presented as a successor Junko Nakagawa (whose terms ends on June 29th).

In both cases, the nominees’ comments over recent years had leaned towards a pro-reflation and pro-accommodative-policy stance, though neither has directly opined on the current stance of BoJ policy as of yet, according to Goldman’s Stuart Jenkins.

The outgoing Board members Noguchi and Nakagawa are both generally seen as being on the dovish end of the committee though, arguing for a more limited compositional shift in the Board’s policy preferences, though Goldman economists see the announcements as slightly lowering the odds of an H1 hike (versus their base case of July).

Policy speeches from the two nominees will be key to assessing their appetite or resistance to further hikes, but markets are likely also deriving some signal from the nominations as a ‘litmus test’ for PM Takaichi’s own policy preferences, with economists acknowledging the hurdle to policy tightening that government influence may present.

Goldman adds that pricing around a more concerted exit from Japan’s real rate regime was a key ingredient to the Yen’s post-election rebound, but a dovish BoJ disappointment ahead remains an important risk to that, including if the Yen’s reaction itself lowers the BoJ’s urgency for hikes.

While the increased role of a fiscal risk premium across Japanese assets has driven a divergence between USD/JPY and US-Japan rate differentials (see first chart below), the pair has still exhibit a fairly high beta to front-end rate differentials (second chart below), which are increasingly coming from the Japan leg (third chart below).

Charts of the Day: A rising Japan fiscal risk premium prior to the lower house election helps explain the recent disconnect between USDJPY and rate differentials.

USD/JPY’s beta to daily shifts in long-end rate differentials have become more muted over the past year relative to the post-YCC 2024 period – consistent with more frequent episodes of shifts in Japan’s fiscal risk premium that pushes on the Yen and JGBs in the same direction – while the pair has exhibited a higher sensitive to shifts in front-end rate differentials.

The BoJ’s hiking cycle has come alongside a gradual increase in implied Japan rates vol relative to the US, arguing for an outsized contribution from price action in Japan rates to the Yen.
