U.S. President Donald Trump said he was disappointed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s refusal to use the joint UK–U.S. military base on Diego Garcia island to strike Iran.
In an interview with The Telegraph, published on March 2, Trump said that Starmer’s initial refusal to let Washington use the Chagos Islands base was unlike anything that had “happened between our countries before.”
Starmer confirmed late on March 1 that the UK had initially decided not to take part in U.S. strikes against Iran, but said the security situation had changed as Iranian actions began threatening British personnel and interests in the region.
“We have British jets in the air as part of coordinated defensive operations which have already successfully intercepted Iranian strikes,” Starmer said. “But the only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source – in their storage depots or the launchers which used to fire the missiles.”
Starmer said that he would now allow the United States “to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose.”
Trump said it “took far too long” for Starmer to change his mind.
“It sounds like he was worried about the legality,” he said.
The base on Diego Garcia is regarded by the United States as one of its most strategically important military hubs. Located roughly 2,300 to 2,400 miles from the southern coast of Iran, it allows long-range bomber and naval operations across the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indo-Pacific.
In a Feb. 18 post on Truth Social, Trump warned that the facility could become critical if tensions with Iran escalated further. He wrote that if Tehran refused a diplomatic agreement, the United States might need to use Diego Garcia and the airfield at RAF Fairford in England to prevent a potential Iranian attack on the UK or its allies.
Diplomatic Tensions, Parliamentary Delay
Trump’s criticism also comes amid continuing debate over the UK’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, a British overseas territory, to Mauritius.
Under the terms of the agreement, signed in October 2025, the British–U.S. naval and bomber base on Diego Garcia would remain under UK control for at least 99 years, ensuring continued access for U.S. forces.
The UK government has said the agreement was necessary to safeguard the long-term operation of the base, following a series of international court rulings that weakened the UK’s legal position.

According to Starmer’s remarks in January, the issue of the Chagos deal had been raised repeatedly with the White House, and he maintained that the Trump administration had already reviewed and supported the agreement at an agency level.
Trump has criticized the UK’s decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling it an “act of total weakness” in January.
“All of a sudden [Mauritius] was claiming ownership. He [Starmer] should have fought it out and owned it or make him take it, if you want to know the truth. But no, we were very disappointed in Keir,” Trump told The Telegraph, describing the Chagos deal as a “very woke thing.”
Last week, UK officials confirmed that Downing Street was pausing to discuss the matter with the United States before bringing the bill to ratify the Chagos deal back to Parliament.
“We are sometimes going to disagree with our friends and allies in public, but we will seek to resolve those issues in private,” British Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told lawmakers on Feb. 25.
Referring to the UK’s decision to pause the process, Trump said it “is useful,” adding that “it took far too much time.”
“It would have been much better on the legal front if he just kept the ownership of the land and not given it to people that weren’t the rightful owners,” Trump said.
Security Risks
Roughly 300,000 Britons are believed to be in countries targeted by Iran, with 102,000 registered with the Foreign Office for alerts as officials weigh all options, including a potential mass evacuation.
Trump suggested Starmer should have always approved American use of the base, because Iran was responsible for killing “a lot of people from your country”.
“[There are] people without arms and legs and faces that have been blown up. Iran is 95 per cent of those. Those horrible events were caused by Iran,” Trump said.
Starmer said in his March 1 statement that Iran is “striking British interests” and “putting British people at huge risk.”
“Our partners in the Gulf have asked us to do more to defend them, and it is my duty to protect British lives,” he added.
Hours after his statement, a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into the UK’s Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri in Cyprus. The drone struck military facilities at the base at 12:03 a.m., causing minor damage but no casualties, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said in a post on X.
In an emailed statement to The Epoch Times on March 2, a spokesperson for the UK’s Ministry of Defence said that it regularly reviews the security of its overseas bases, including the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus.
The ministry also said additional capabilities had recently been deployed to the island as part of efforts to maintain regional security and stability in the Middle East.
Those capabilities are focused on defensive operations and include radar systems, counter-drone technology, F-35 fighter jets and ground-based air defence systems designed to detect and defeat airborne threats.

At the start of last season, the Hampshire transfer was cast into the role of newcomer for the Green Wave, who would end producing a fourth-place finish in the state in Class 1A.
“I really wanted to be an asset and contributor to the team,” Younger said. “I was really out of the spotlight, and I didn’t feel like I was a big part of what happened.
“Now, it’s different. And this feels like one of the greatest nights of my life.”
Younger definitely had a good night Monday, scoring nine points as St. Edward rallied for a 57-51 win over Phillips in overtime in the Class 2A Dominican Supersectional in River Forest.
Junior guard Savannah Lynch scored 26 points and senior forward Jordin Sauls also had nine for the Green Wave (27-8), who qualified for the state finals for the seventh time in program history.

Senior forward Sanaii McPherson added eight points and a team-best 11 rebounds for St. Edward, which advanced to play at 4 p.m. Thursday against Byron (32-2) in the state semifinals at CEFCU Arena in Normal.
The Green Wave overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter and forced OT on Younger’s baseline drive with 20 seconds remaining and Sauls’ layup with 10 seconds left.
“Ever since she came her last year, she has just been great to be around,” Lynch said of Younger. “She has that intensity on defense and she knows how to score and look for her teammates.
“She does everything on the floor we need her to do.”

Younger bookended her performance with an electric start and a superb finish. Her five early points that included a 3-pointer sparked the Green Wave to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter.
Junior guard Layne Dawson, who contributed two points, six rebounds and a team-best five assists, praised Younger afterward.
“Ginger always makes great passes and great decisions out there,” Dawson said. “She plays with poise and energy. She made that great shot there to get us back into the game.
“She always knows when to shoot, pass or make the right option.”

Younger, a Judson recruit, is averaging nine points, two assists and two steals. Her interplay with Lynch is a crucial part of St. Edward’s attack. The two forged an instant connection last season.
“I wanted to come somewhere where there was a real bond,” Younger said. “There’s a togetherness here that feels like a family. The biggest adjustment was just being incorporated into the team.”
A crucial player off the bench who averaged 4.5 points, Younger played in all 38 games last winter. The graduation of guard Elizabeth Leadley opened the door for her to be a starter.
Younger also was handed the keys to the Green Wave’s car by running the point.
“I want to be the one who gets everybody involved and makes the right passes, whether they’re a bench player or a shooting guard,” Younger said. “This season has just been way different than what I went through last year.”

The 5-foot-5 Younger also played receiver in flag football last fall for St. Edward. The experience helped with her toughness, discipline and desire to be a physical presence.
Her father Darryl was her earliest coach and the catalyst for her involvement with basketball. She’s the second of four children.
“My older sister didn’t really like basketball the way I did,” Younger said. “My dad gave me the love for the game. One of the reasons I play so hard is to impress him.
“It just made (Monday night) so special and wonderful.”

Dear Eric: I have been with my husband for almost 35 years. We both had been married and divorced once. But there have been three of us in this marriage: my husband, myself and his mother.
She has always treated me poorly and he always defends her.
She has bullied me over and over again. She fully believes that she is supposed to be everyone’s priority and get her way immediately, automatic compliance. If you tell her no, you will be unleashed on with such fury.
My husband defends almost all of this. He tells me I am the problem, not her and her behavior because I try to stand up to her and have a problem with what she does. He says I shouldn’t care how she treats me because she is so virtuous and she always does the right thing.
She has never once apologized for her incredibly selfish behavior or her vicious mouth. She has screamed at me and tells me I am just “too sensitive”. I am beyond sick of it.
He needs to be married to her, not me.
Aside from all of this with her, he is a very kind man, a wonderful stepdad to my sons and a loving grandfather. I am just sick of the denial of my very bad experience with his mother and the endless idealization and idolizing.
The resentment is enormous. We have been to marriage counseling because he had some of the same behaviors toward me and I was on the brink and wanted out. What do I do?

Dear In-Law: This kind of treatment is unacceptable; I’m sorry you’ve gone through this. You write that he had some of the same behaviors toward you. Your relationship with your mother-in-law may be beyond salvaging and the best course of action may be to put as much distance between you and her as you can. But your marriage should be healthy and communicative; those behaviors you mentioned are neither and it’s concerning.
I’m curious about what happens if you make the subject of his mother something that neither of you discuss. Without needing to defend her, can he see and address his side of the street in counseling? Can you adjust his behavior toward you?
From what you’ve written, you don’t seem to be asking him to choose sides, you’re asking him to acknowledge feelings and that you deserve to be treated with respect. If he doesn’t think you deserve respect, how can he show up for your marriage?
You don’t have to like his mother; you don’t have to fully understand their connection, unhealthy though it may be. But he needs to respect you; make that non-negotiable in counseling.
Dear Eric: I socialize with a group that includes an extreme extrovert. She dominates the conversation. Nice person but she never shuts up. She talks 95 percent of the time and the rest of us get 1 percent each.
She goes into long-winded stories about people we don’t know. Age/cognitive decline is not the issue. How would you kindly let her know she needs to develop listening skills as they are also part of conversation?

Dear Talked: Try setting up group agreements for conversation, like a conversation prompt that each person gets to answer or even bringing a timer to lunch so that everyone is assured a space in the conversation. The key is to make these decisions at the group level so that everyone, including your extroverted friend, buys into the effort.
Dear Eric: The letter writer “Feeling Guilty” wrote about being financially strapped after cancer treatments and unable to tell their daughters. There are many financial assistance programs for her cancer treatment.
For instance, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has $500 grants to help with everyday costs, including gas and utilities.
Additionally, there are volunteers available to drive her to her treatments through the American Cancer Society.
All cancer centers have nurse navigators who assist with appointments, financial assistance and other complementary treatments. Many patients do not know about this service.
