Azerbaiyán acusa a Irán de ataque con dron y promete represalias

BAKÚ, Azerbaijan (AP) — Azerbaiyán acusó a Irán de un ataque con drones en su territorio el jueves que hirió a cuatro civiles, y prometió tomar represalias, en una señal de que la guerra en Oriente Medio se está extendiendo.
El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Azerbaiyán señaló en un comunicado que drones iraníes atacaron su exclave de Najicheván y dañaron un edificio del aeropuerto.

In his nightly address, Zelensky said Ukraine remains in constant contact with Washington but the diplomatic process has paused: “We continue to engage with the United States practically on a daily basis. For now, because of the situation with Iran, the necessary signals for a trilateral meeting haven’t come yet.”
Zelensky has appeared cool on the prospect of talks settling the war in the first place, given he’s been feeling pressure from Washington to abandon territory in the east, which he doesn’t want to do.
There were plans for another round of negotiations in early March, after three rounds have already taken place.
Top Ukrainian officials met envoys from the Trump White House in Geneva on February 26 in order to prepare for a fourth round of negotiations – but merely two days later the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, shifting Washington’s attention to the expanding Middle East conflict.
Zelensky, however, has said Ukraine is ready to resume the diplomatic track once conditions allow. “As soon as the security situation and the broader political context allow us to resume the trilateral diplomatic work, it will be done. Ukraine is ready for it,” he explained.
The venue is also likely to be changed, given the next meeting was planned for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Of course, these Gulf locations are currently under various waves of Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, given they are US allies and American bases are hosted in the region.
The only area of progress between Moscow and Kiev is on the prisoner exchange front – these have been happening periodically over the last year and more. Zelensky says Ukraine hopes more can soon be finalized.
“A POW exchange is always an important moment – it is a positive outcome for families,” he said.
However, Zelensky is still rejecting the prospect of territorial concessions, saying that, “For some reason, some people in the world have begun to take Putin’s words at face value – that if Ukraine were not present in Donbas [the Donetsk and Luhansk region], the war would end. Despite all the words previously said by Russia, the aggression has only intensified, and we simply cannot trust the Russian side.”.
“We can try to negotiate an end to the war with strong mediators, but the conditions must be such that we do not trust or rely just on Russia’s words,” he continued. “We must understand that Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donbas will not guarantee that Putin will not continue the war.”
Zelensky still showing no signs of compromise, and is even taunting Russia:

Bexley Howard, a senior at Naperville Central High School, was awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship, which provides four years of college tuition and housing and is valued at about $125,000.
Open to golf caddies, more than 100 students from the Chicago area were awarded the scholarship this year, a news release said.
Bexley began caddying at Naperville Country Club to help support his family, the release said. While caddying, Bexley also maintained a perfect grade point average and took part in high school extracurricular activities and volunteer work.
He is planning to become a financial analyst after being inspired by his family’s economic struggles, the release said.
Evans Scholars must have a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character, the release said. It is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.
COLLEGE OF DUPAGE TO HOLD FREE LEGAL CLINIC
The Office of the General Counsel at the College of DuPage will hold a free legal clinic from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the Student Resource Center of the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.
The clinic is open to the community, a news release said.

DUPAGE PLANS EVENTS FOR US 250TH ANNIVERSARY
DuPage County and its partners are planning community celebrations throughout the year in honor of the United State’s 250th anniversary.
The County Board and the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference are inviting all municipalities and countywide elected officials to contribute one item to a time capsule that will be buried on the county campus in Wheaton in June, a news release said.
In partnership with the DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau, the board is launching a photo contest, “Snapshots of DuPage: Honoring 250 Years of America.” Entries in the adult and youth categories will be accepted through Nov. 2.
Selected photos will be featured in county and visitors bureau communications, exhibits and social media, the release said. Winners will be recognized at the Dec. 8 DuPage County Board meeting.

WASHINGTON (AP) — La cantidad de estadounidenses que solicitaron ayuda por desempleo la semana pasada no varió respecto de la semana anterior, una señal de que los despidos se mantienen en niveles históricamente bajos.
Las solicitudes de ayuda por desempleo en Estados Unidos para la semana que terminó el 28 de febrero igualaron las 213.000 de la semana previa, informó el jueves el Departamento de Trabajo. Analistas consultados por la firma de datos FactSet pronosticaron 215.000 nuevas solicitudes.
Las solicitudes de ayuda por desempleo se consideran un indicador indirecto de los despidos en Estados Unidos y son casi un termómetro en tiempo real de la salud del mercado laboral.
El mes pasado, el Departamento de Trabajo informó que los empleadores en Estados Unidos sumaron 130.000 puestos de trabajo en enero, una cifra sorprendentemente sólida, y que la tasa de desempleo bajó a 4,3% con respecto al 4,4% anterior. Jury finds Bolingbrook man guilty of drug-induced homicide in Aurora man’s death
A jury has found a Bolingbrook man guilty of drug-induced homicide in the death of a 27-year-old man from Aurora, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
According to statements presented in court by Assistant State’s Attorneys Jake G. Matekaitis and Ryan M. Ahern, Niko Ramirez, 27, had communicated on Nov. 25 and 26, 2022, with Eric L. Jones, 54, of Bolingbrook, in order to arrange to purchase drugs, a news release this week from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
On Nov. 26 at around 7:30 p.m., Jones delivered 10 fentanyl pills to Ramirez, who ingested one of the pills later that evening at his home, officials said.
A roommate then found Ramirez dead the following morning and called 911, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. The Aurora Police Department and the Kane County Coroner’s Office responded to his home on the 500 block of Hartford Avenue in Aurora to begin an investigation. An autopsy ultimately determined that he had died from fentanyl intoxication, according to the release.
The investigation, which was led by Aurora Police Department Det. Darrell Moore, ended on Nov. 4, 2024, when Jones was arrested in Elgin by members of the United States Marshal’s Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, the news release said. He was ultimately found guilty by a jury of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, officials said.
Jones remains in custody at the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is set for April 2 for motions and sentencing, the State’s Attorney’s Office said. He faces a sentence of between six and 30 years in state prison, according to the release.

The results of Tuesday’s Democratic primary in Texas delivered a clear political message: voters are tired of listening to Rep. Jasmine Crockett.
And thank f**king god she lost, because I am too.
Crockett, who spent much of her short national career cultivating a reputation as the politician who can constantly be wrong the loudest and with the most attitude, was defeated by Texas state Rep. James Talarico, who was nowhere near as prominent on national television and who many people have likely ever heard of.
Crockett quickly blamed everyone but herself, chalking up the loss to confusion over polling locations and a late court decision involving Dallas County as factors in the outcome, but the result likely reflects something deeper than a single election-night dispute: people have just had enough of her bullshit.
Crockett’s style, to the best of my understanding, has been to create a massive annoying self-centered spectacle first, then address the actual issue and facts later, if at all.
This led her to become a frequent presence on cable news and social media, where sharp insults and dramatic soundbites tend to travel faster than detailed policy proposals. It’s an approach that can be effective for building a national following, particularly among activists whose supporters are also activists looking for any unjust cause to scream about without understanding.
The problem, however, is that viral moments apparently don’t translate into confidence at the ballot box. Eventually voters start wondering whether their representative is spending more time crafting the next viral clip and doing their nails instead of performing the less glamorous work of actual governing.
The contrast between Crockett and Talarico was difficult to miss. Talarico ran a campaign that emphasized policy and a more conventional tone. Crockett leaned into the fiery persona that made her a social media favorite. And hey, there is certainly an audience for that brand of politics, but apparently not quite enough of one in her own district.
And thank god, because we can all tolerate idiots in politics — and we do, on both sides of the aisle — but an idiot with the volume turned up to 11? That’s unbearable.
Who can forget some of Crockett’s public statements over the last few years? During one television appearance discussing immigration policy, she delivered a line that quickly circulated across the internet.
“It is not a criminal violation to enter the country illegally. It’s not. It’s not criminal. It’s not a crime. It’s not a crime,” she said on MSNBC in March of last year.
Critics immediately pointed out the obvious contradiction: the word “illegal” tends to imply that a law is, in fact, being broken. For many observers the moment raised an uncomfortable question. If a member of Congress — and a practicing lawyer, no less — sounds unsure about a basic point of federal law, voters are entitled to wonder how carefully the rest of the argument has been thought through.
Then there was recently, while attempting to criticize Republicans for alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein, Crockett referenced donations from someone named Jeffrey Epstein to Lee Zeldin and other GOP figures. Unfortunately for the narrative she was building, the donor in question turned out to be a completely different person with the same name as the infamous financier. The real Epstein had died years earlier, as The Hill pointed out:
She attacked Mitt Romney, John McCain, Sarah Palin and Lee Zeldin — all Republican officials — for having contract with Jeffrey Epstein.
There’s just one problem: The Jeffrey Epstein who donated to Zeldin, Romney and other Republicans is not THAT Jeffrey Epstein — i.e., the one who died in prison under mysterious circumstances and has embroiled various associates in scandal, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Larry Summers. The Jeffrey Epstein whose political donations Crockett is highlighting is an entirely different person.
The mix-up was the kind of error that might have been avoided with a quick fact check, but by the time the correction arrived the damage was already done. Political opponents had a field day with it, and even neutral observers were left shaking their heads.
And how about when she took to CNN to flail her arms, nod her head and suggest 80% of the worst crimes in America are committed by “white supremacists”?
Or when she took to The Breakfast Club to confess her allegiance to America Mexico and Canada:
“The fact that I’m rooting for Canada and I’m rooting for Mexico a lot is really wild, but they are really the ones that are speaking truth to power right now. They can see what it is, and they were like, we are not messing with this crazy regime from Mar-a-Lago and basically calling them thugs…”
Maybe that didn’t play as well in Texas as should would have liked.
Regardless, these moments reinforced a growing perception that Crockett’s political approach prioritized Instagram stories and outrage over precision. In the age of social media, that can seem like a winning strategy. Outrage travels fast, nuance does not. But elections have a funny way of rewarding the politicians who still take the time to get the details right.
Crockett also aligned herself firmly with the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party, embracing rhetoric and policy ideas that energize activists but can alienate voters who prefer a more pragmatic approach. Positions that sound good in a viral clip do not always sound as appealing when voters are deciding who they want representing them in Washington. Talarico, by contrast, positioned himself as a more measured voice — someone interested in governing rather than constantly sparring on cable television.

On election night, after a humiliating loss, Crockett suggested the outcome might have been shaped by confusion surrounding polling locations and a legal dispute in Dallas County. After a lower court briefly allowed voting hours to be extended, the Supreme Court of Texas reversed the decision and instructed officials to separate ballots cast after the original closing time. Crockett argued that voters had been disenfranchised and predicted the results might take time to become clear.
“Unfortunately, this is what Republicans like to do,” she said in her non-concession speech after getting trounced. Ah, that’s right, it’s the system’s fault. It’s the GOP’s fault. It’s everyone but Jasmine Crockett’s fault.
More often, losses like this are the product of a longer political trend. Voters watch how their representatives behave in public. Over time those impressions accumulate. Eventually voters decide whether the person they elected is representing them — or simply performing for an audience and for themselves.
In Crockett’s case, Tuesday’s result suggests that many voters had simply grown tired of her traveling circus. Political theatrics may generate applause on social media and enthusiastic segments on cable news, but they don’t always age well with constituents who expect their representative to take the job seriously.

The first sign that the critical maritime chokepoint was partially open came late Wednesday night, when we were among the first to report that a China-linked bulk carrier exited the Strait of Hormuz without incident, a notable development given earlier reports and market chatter that Iran might allow only Chinese-linked ships to transit.
Shortly after our report that the Iron Maiden vessel made it through the narrowest part of the waterway unharmed, Bloomberg also reported on the development, noting that the ship had changed its destination signal to “CHINA OWNER.”
Latest activity in the Strait.
Earlier this week, Iran’s IRGC said that any vessel sailing through the waterway “could be at risk from missiles or rogue drones,” according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.
China has urged peace and called for an immediate ceasefire to the U.S.-Israeli Operation Epic Fury to “prevent further escalation of tensions and stop the conflict from spreading and engulfing the entire Middle East.”
Everyone knows why China is calling for peace: the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s cheap oil flows have effectively been closed to the world’s second-largest economy, and that pressure is likely to be used as leverage by President Trump in his upcoming visit to China.

The Strait has not been fully closed, in part because the Trump administration spent the week degrading Iran’s naval capabilities, but the disruption is still severe because major European and global insurers have abruptly pulled or canceled war-risk coverage for the region.
