As South Side Congressional race nears end, candidates attend town halls, self-defense class and funeral
Between tributes and songs, the crowd celebrating civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. at Friday’s homegoing got a not-so-subtle call: Vote for his son.
For a short speech in front of thousands, Jesse Jackson Jr. stepped up to the cross-shaped lectern. The former congressman is balancing grief over his father’s death with a political campaign to win back the seat he resigned from amid a campaign finance scandal that sent him to prison.
Before his eulogy, Jackson was introduced as “the next Congressman of the 2nd Congressional District,” another sign the race had been reshaped.
“He’s on his way back. He will be back in the House of Representatives doing what Jesse would have him do,” U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters of California said to end the following eulogy. “Just think, two of Jesse Jackson’s sons in the House of Representatives, knowing and understanding what their daddy was all about.”
Even as Jackson has stepped away from the campaign trail to be with family and host remembrances, he has been thrust into the spotlight. In TV interviews and speeches focused on his father, the race’s best-known candidate has been front and center as a field of contenders vies to replace Rep. Robin Kelly, who is running for U.S. Senate instead of seeking reelection.
As Jackson spoke again at a private funeral Saturday, the race’s other frontrunners, including Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller and state Sen. Robert Peters, jockeyed for votes elsewhere.
Peters was one of only three candidates to attend a public town hall at Thornton Fractional North High School, possibly the last public forum featuring multiple candidates. In addition to Jackson and Miller, state Sen. Willie Preston and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Yumeka Brown did not attend the town hall in Calumet City.
Peters, businessman Eric France and independent candidate Ashley Banks largely agreed on policies during the town hall. The federal minimum wage should be raised, the long-debated South Suburban Airport near Peotone should be built and President Donald Trump should be fought, they said.
Peters sought to separate himself by pointing to his progressive record in Springfield. He called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be abolished and healthcare to be guaranteed for all Americans.
“We’re the richest, most powerful country in the history of the planet,” he said. “We can guarantee people healthcare. We can guarantee people good schools. We can guarantee people a good life.”
France touted his experience fighting against domestic violence as an activist. He argued his background as a developer would help him secure more housing.
“You have got to have the right people at the table and the right people in Washington,” he said. “I haven’t built more in the 2nd District because I didn’t have anybody who I could work with who understood it to get it done.”
After the event, Peters criticized his competitors for not attending, calling their absence “unfair to voters.” He argued that Preston sought to avoid questions about his immigration stances, while Miller was trying to dodge questions about the money funding her campaign.
A campaign spokesperson said Preston had instead opted to campaign near poll sites Saturday.
An hour after the town hall in nearby Flossmoor, Miller leaned on a wall as she talked with a handful of voters who attended a meet-and-greet at the Chicago Minami jiu-jitsu dojo next to her campaign office.
One of the five attendees asked her what focus she would bring to Congress. Healthcare, she answered.
She said she would fight to add birthing centers across the Southland and restore women’s health research funding, interrupted at times by the sound of a white-robed trainer somersaulting over a mat. When a voter asked how she would push back against the Trump administration’s anti-vaccine efforts, she argued her presence as a healthcare expert would change discussions on Capitol Hill.
“The conversation changes based on who’s in the room,” Miller said. “The room is going to change.”
She then slid off her sneakers, walked onto the blue cushioned floor and learned how to block a right-handed punch.
Afterward, Miller — whose campaign opponents say is supported by around $5 million in campaign contributions and independent expenditures tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a group that advocates for Israel’s interests — pushed back against Peters’ criticism.

She attended a brunch Saturday morning before hitting polling sites and planned to host two virtual fundraisers and meet voters at several Hyde Park high-rises later in the day, she said.
“It’s not avoiding people, it’s that I already have a schedule, and it’s a pretty busy schedule,” she said.
She argued that she would be an “initiator” on Capitol Hill, pointing to the five pieces of legislation she plans to introduce on day one if elected. The policies range from guardrails against online bullying to heart attack response training expansions and new uterine fibroid research funding.
She also said her long-term residence in the district made her unique among the top candidates.
“Everywhere that we go, I’m well known in the district. People know me because I’m part of this district,” she said. “It makes a difference.”
A campaign spokesperson for Jackson said he plans to resume campaign activities in the upcoming week ahead of the March 17 primary. Jackson has argued that he should be elected because of his experience and his plans to enshrine access to healthcare in a Constitutional amendment, among other priorities.
At Friday’s service, Jackson began his remarks by chiding earlier speakers from the “political class” for speaking too long. Three former presidents had preceded him. Then he echoed some of his father’s most famous words.
“Keeping hope alive is the answer to suicidality,” he said. “Not only for individuals who might want to kill themselves, but for a nation on the brink of self-destruction.”
He focused his Saturday eulogy on his family, sharing praise for each of his siblings and his mother, Jacqueline Jackson. He announced the campaign on his father’s birthday, Oct. 8, he told the crowd amid tears.
As tissues flowed on stage, he recalled his 17-month stint in prison. He asked his father if he would help get him out, he said. “I’m trying son, but don’t give up. Hold your head high. Stick your chest out, you can make it,” he recalled his father saying.
“When I was in the hole, I thought about the stranger,” he said. “My dad is the stranger. He can save people from prison, go around the world and change everybody. He’s the one we turned to in our lowest hour. My dad was the stranger, the embodiment of God.”

McKendree wins team title at inaugural NCAA women’s wrestling championship — North Central takes 3rd
CORALVILLE, Iowa — Yu Sakamoto beat Riley Rayome of North Central 4-3 to win the 117-pound crown and clinch the team title for McKendree on Saturday night at the inaugural NCAA women’s wrestling championships.
After a wild scramble in the final seconds, a challenge by North Central and a review, Sakamoto’s win gave McKendree a 167-166 lead over Iowa — which finished with three individual champions and a runner-up, but had no remaining competitors with two matches remaining. The Bearcats finished with 171 points and third-place North Central had 123.5.
Grand Valley State’s Katerina Lange, the No. 1 seed, beat second-seeded Claire DiCugno of North Central 4-1 to claim the 138-pound title and become the first women’s wrestling national champion.
North Central’s Bella Mir won at 145 pounds, beating No. 1 seed and former teammate Reese Larramendy of Iowa in the first round to avenge her only regular-season loss. The second-seeded Mir — an Iowa transfer and the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir — reversed a takedown attempt, immediately rolled and pinned Larramendy with 34 seconds left.
Iowa’s Valarie Solorio, the No. 2 seed, beat fourth-seeded Rayana Sahagun of Grand Valley State by technical fall in the second round to win the 103-pound title. Sahagun beat No. 1 seed Heather Crull on criteria (7-7) in the semifinals.
Lehigh’s Audrey Jimenez pinned Sage Mortimer of Grand Valley State just 1:19 into the first round to claim the crown at 110 pounds.
Quincy’s Xochitl Mota-Pettis won at 124 pounds, beating Shelby Moore of McKendree by technical fall (10-0) in the second round.
Cameron Guerin of McKendree beat Alexis Janlak of Aurora on criteria (5-5) to win the championship at 131 pounds in the final match of the night.
Iowa’s Kennedy Blades, the No. 1 seed, pinned third-seeded Tiffani Baublitz of East Stroudsburg in 1:19 to claim the 160-pound crown.
Iowa’s Kylie Welker outscored Destiny Rodriguez of McKendree 11-0 in the first round to win the 180-pound title by technical fall.
McKendree’s Tristan Kelly beat Sabrina Nauss of Grand Valley State by technical fall (11-0) in the second round to secure the national championship at 207 pounds.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright made the rounds on network TV Sunday to reassure viewers that the sharp rise in oil and gas prices due to the Iran war – which Trump has no problem sticking US consumers with for a while – would prove short-lived, and has downplayed the spike as a transient “fear premium” vs. a fundamental supply issue.
In conversations to CBS, CNN, and Fox News, wright emphasized that global energy markets remain well-supplied despite disruptions to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz – the narrow waterway that carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne crude.
“This is a disruption on the way to a much better place to end a 47-year war against America,” he told Fox.
“The world is not short of oil today or natural gas,” Wright told CBS’ “Face the Nation,” adding “You’re seeing a little bit of fear premium in the marketplace.”

Wright also projected that gasoline prices could fall below $3 per gallon “relatively soon,” and that any worst-case disruption would only last “weeks, not months” – a line he gave to both CBS and CNN.
The comments come as Brent crude futures have risen sharply in recent days, pushing U.S. pump prices higher and raising concerns about inflationary pressures ahead of midterm elections. The administration has framed the military operation – dubbed by some officials as aimed at neutralizing long-term threats from Tehran – as ultimately beneficial for global energy stability.
Wright also highlighted early signs of progress in restoring flows through the Strait of Hormuz. “A large tanker went through the Strait of Hormuz 24 hours ago,” he said, adding that U.S. and allied efforts are “massively attriting” Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones.
He indicated that naval escorts could be provided for initial tankers to ensure safe passage, with normal commercial traffic expected to resume “relatively soon.”

He repeated the “one large tanker has already gone through” talking point to Fox.
To address immediate supply pressures, Wright disclosed diplomatic efforts to reroute stranded cargoes. He said the U.S. had coordinated with India to divert Russian oil tankers originally bound for China, describing the move as pragmatic and temporary. “A lot of Russian oil hanging out on Asian waters,” he noted, adding that India – already increasing imports from the U.S. and Venezuela – had proven “a great partner.” Wright stressed no change in U.S. policy toward Russian oil sales, framing the rerouting as a way to quickly bring barrels to market and ease refining bottlenecks in Asia.
Wright also justified the Iran was as a necessary step to end Tehran’s decades-long disruption of energy markets.
“Iran has terrorized America, the neighborhood, and energy markets for 47 years,” he said with a straight face. “We believe this is a small price to pay to get to a world where energy prices are returned back to where they were.”
Meanwhile, he confirmed that there’s no actual plan for what post-conflict Iran will look like (shocker!).
“We don’t know what regime will be in place at the end of this conflict,” he told CBS. “What we do know is that regime will not have a massive weapons arsenal…and will no longer be a massive threat to Americans and to the Middle East and the global oil supplies.”
When asked if the U.S. will employ a strategy in Iran similar to Venezuela, working with members of a deposed regime, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says “we don’t know what regime will be in place at the end of this conflict.”

LIMA (AP) — Las autoridades locales en el norte de Perú reforzaron el domingo los controles en discotecas y bares tras un atentado con un artefacto con explosivo en un local que según autoridades dejó 40 heridos, elevando la cifra inicial de 33.
La explosión ocurrió la víspera en la discoteca Dalí en la ciudad de Trujillo de la región la Libertad, azotada por la violencia y la criminalidad, cuando los asistentes presenciaban un espectáculo musical.
La cifra de heridos por el hecho violento se incrementó a 40, según el informe de la Gerencia Regional de Salud de La Libertad, cifra que también confirmó el sábado el director ejecutivo de la Red de Salud de Trujillo, Gerardo Florián, a una radio local
Al menos 10 heridos han sido dados de alta, uno permanece con pronóstico “reservado” y otros cuatro en estado de gravedad, detalló Florián.
Tras conocerse que entre los lesionados se encuentran tres adolescentes de entre 16 y 17 años, funcionarios de fiscalización del Municipio de Trujillo acudieron la madrugada del domingo a la discoteca para verificar el cumplimiento de la orden de clausura por 30 días, por violar la ordenanza de prohibición de ingreso de menores, así como el límite de horario de funcionamiento, informó esa alcaldía en sus redes sociales.
En tanto, la policía investiga a tres sospechosos detenidos la noche previa, confirmó a The Associated Press la oficina de prensa en un mensaje de WhatsApp, sin proporcionar más información. PARÍS (AP) — Lens culminó una gran semana al vencer el domingo 3-0 al Metz 3-0 y colocarse a un punto del líder de la Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain, en una tensa lucha por el título.

Northern Iowa denies UIC men an NCAA Tournament berth with an 84-69 win in the MVC final
ST. LOUIS — Trey Campbell hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points, and Northern Iowa defeated UIC 84-69 to win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and an automatic NCAA Tournament bid Sunday.
The Panthers (23-12) won the tournament for the sixth time and earned their ninth NCAA appearance and first since 2016. Sixth-seeded UNI became the lowest seed to win the tournament and the first to win four games in four days.
The fifth-seeded Flames (19-15) were seeking their first MVC Tournament championship, their fourth NCAA appearance and their first since 2004.
Campbell was 8 of 13 shooting, including 6 of 9 behind the arc, for the Panthers, who shot 63% and were 12 of 23 on 3-pointers.
Ben Schwieger was 7 of 8 shooting and made three 3-pointers to finish with 18 points. Will Hornseth and Leon Bond added 10 each. Tristan Smith had a game-high eight rebounds to go with nine points.
Elijah Crawford scored 28 points on 13-of-29 shooting to lead the fifth-seeded Flames (19-15). Ahmad Henderson II added 13 and Rashund Washington Jr. and Jayce Nathaniel 10 each. UIC shot 44% against the nation’s top scoring defense (61.1 ppg).
The Panthers led all the way and were ahead 48-41 at halftime. After hitting just one of their first six shots to open the second half, the Panthers made seven in row, including a pair of 3s from Campbell and another by Schwieger, to lead by 13.
The Flames rallied behind Nathaniel and Crawford, who scored all the points in a 9-2 run to get within six. Campbell stopped that run with a straightaway 3-pointer to begin a 13-2 run that ended with UNI up by 17 — their largest lead — with 37 seconds left.

U.S. President Donald Trump said March 8 that the Cuban government is negotiating a deal with him and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Speaking at his “Shield of the Americas” gathering of Latin American leaders in Miami, Florida, Trump said that Cuba is “at the end of the line” due to Venezuela cutting off oil deliveries after the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
“As we achieve a historic transformation in Venezuela, we’re also looking forward to the great change that will soon be coming to Cuba,” Trump said. “They have no money. They have no oil. They have a bad philosophy. They have a bad regime that’s been bad for a long time.”
The president said Cuba is currently negotiating with himself, Rubio, and “some others.”
“And I would think a deal would be made very easily with Cuba,” Trump added.
Trump has urged the Cuban government to strike a deal with his administration since early this year, and has increased pressure after Maduro’s capture. Previously, Venezuela was overwhelmingly Cuba’s largest source of oil.
Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez responded to Trump at the time by saying his nation was “ready to defend the Homeland to the last drop of blood.”
“Those who blame the [communist] Revolution for the severe economic shortages we suffer should hold their tongues in shame,” he said on Jan. 11.
By late last month, Trump was floating the possibility of a “friendly takeover of Cuba” by the United States.
“The Cuban government is talking with us,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Feb. 27.
“They’re in a big deal of trouble. We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba after many, many years. We’ve had a lot of years of dealing with Cuba.”
He also indicated that Rubio was negotiating with Cuban leaders “at a very high level.”
“They have no money, they have no oil, they have no food, and it’s really right now a nation in deep trouble, and they want our help,” Trump said.
The loss of Venezuelan oil and financial support worsened Cuba’s already dire economic crisis that has been gripping the island for nearly a year and a half. Catastrophic fuel shortages have driven frequent blackouts and disrupted transportation.
Large-scale shortages of food and medicine have also impacted the nation’s nearly 11 million residents.
Cuba has been under communist rule since Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. For decades, Havana’s leaders have resisted calls for change from the United States and among its population of exiles who have fled in the years since Castro’s takeover.
But now that the United States is engulfed in a war with Iran that the Trump administration says is largely about kneecapping and replacing Tehran’s theocratic regime, some U.S. lawmakers have questioned whether Cuba will become another target for the U.S. military.
Speculation began weeks before the joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran’s senior leadership.
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) asked Rubio during a Jan. 28 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing if the U.S. secretary of state “would make a public commitment” that the U.S. government would not get involved in regime change in Cuba.
“Oh, no. I think we would like to see the regime there change. That doesn’t mean that we’re going to make a change, but we would love to see a change,” Rubio said at the time.
A change in Cuba’s regime “would be of great benefit to the United States,” Rubio added.
He referred to the Helms–Burton Act of 1996, which requires a democratic transition in Cuba before a U.S. president can normalize relations with the island.
“It was codified in law, and it requires regime change in order for us to lift the embargo,” Rubio said.

La esposa de Shukr, Salwa Hazimeh, relató que Morad llamó a su marido a mediados de diciembre y le dijo que un empresario estaba interesado en comprar un terreno que él quería vender en la ciudad de Zahle y que le gustaría verlo a las 5:30 de la tarde.
“Yo estaba a su lado mientras hablaba y le dije que no podíamos ver el terreno más tarde por la tarde, pero él (Morad) insistió”, relató Hazimeh.
