ACC championship: Duke outlasts No. 17 Virginia 27-20 in OT for first outright title since 1962
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Duke won its first outright Atlantic Coast Conference title since 1962 and threw the College Football Playoff into chaos Saturday night when Darian Mensah connected with Jeremiah Hasley for a 1-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play in overtime, and the unranked Blue Devils held on to beat No. 17 Virginia 27-20.
The Blue Devils (8-5) are unlikely to make the playoff field, opening the door for a second Group of Five team — likely James Madison — to make it.
Duke last won a share of the ACC regular-season title in 1989, sharing it with Virginia in Steve Spurrier’s final season as Blue Devils coach. The conference championship game was created in 2005, and Duke got there this year thanks to a five-team tiebreaker.
Virginia (10-3), the ACC regular-season champion, would have reached the CFP for the first time in school history with a victory but fell short when Chandler Morris was intercepted by Luke Mergott on the Cavaliers’ first offensive play in OT.
Mensah threw for 196 yards and two scores — both to Hasley — while Nate Sheppard ran for 97 yards and a score for Duke.

Chicago Blackhawks lose for 7th time in 9 games, falling 6-0 in 2nd straight matchup against Los Angeles Kings
LOS ANGELES — Brandt Clarke scored twice to help Los Angeles break out of an offensive funk, Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves and the Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-0 on Saturday night to split a two-game set.
Warren Foegele, Andrei Kuzmenko, Mikey Anderson and Alex Turcotte also scored after the Kings had been held to two goals or fewer in seven of their last nine games. The six goals are their most in regulation this season, and they won by more than one goal for the first time since a 5-1 victory at Montreal on Nov. 11.
Spencer Knight made 26 saves for the Blackhawks, who lost for the seventh time in nine games (2-5-2). Forward Teuvo Teräväinen did not play after he was struck in the face by a puck in the final minute of a 2-1 victory over the Kings on Thursday night.
Goals of any sort had been hard to come by for the Kings over the last three weeks, but Foegele’s one-timer early in the second period led to an offensive eruption in the middle 20 minutes.
Kuzmenko then got the Kings’ first power-play goal in five games and only its third in the last 12 outings. They are 3-for-36 (8.3%) in that span.
Clarke finished off the breakthrough period by scoring through the screen of Corey Perry, who gave Knight no vantage point to see the wrist shot from the high slot.
Clarke got his second of the night early in the third, followed by Anderson and Turcotte each netting their second goals of the season.

Big Ten championship: No. 2 Indiana beats No. 1 Ohio St. 13-10 to end title drought and lock up top CFP seed
INDIANAPOLIS — Fernando Mendoza’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt gave No. 2 Indiana the lead midway through the third quarter, and the Hoosiers’ stingy defense shut down No. 1 Ohio State the rest of the way in a 13-10 victory Saturday night for their first Big Ten championship since 1967.
Indiana likely locked up the top seed in the College Football Playoff while extending the best record in school history to 13-0. The Hoosiers are also poised to claim the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time.
They did it by snapping a 30-game losing streak against the Buckeyes that stretched to 1988. Indiana also ended major college football’s longest winning streak at 16 games, sealing the win with a 33-yard pass from Mendoza to Charlie Becker on third down, a play that took the clock down to the two-minute timeout.
Ohio State fell to 12-1, though its quest to win back-to-back national championships for the first time will likely begin with the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
The Buckeyes had a chance to retake the lead on fourth-and-1 from the Indiana 5-yard line late in the third quarter. But a replay review overturned the call on the field, determining Julian Sayin came up short. They also had a chance to tie the score with 2:48 to play, but Jayden Fielding missed a 29-yard field-goal attempt wide left.
The two quarterbacks dueling for the Heisman Trophy essentially played to a draw.
Mendoza was injured on the first offensive play of the game but returned after missing one play and finished 15 of 23 for 222 yards and the one touchdown and one interception. Sayin was 21 of 29 for 258 yards, one TD and one interception.
But when the big plays needed to be made, Mendoza usually got the job done
Indiana took a 3-0 lead after Sayin was picked off in the first quarter, but the Buckeyes turned Mendoza’s miscue into a 17-yard touchdown pass to Carnell Tate for a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.
The teams traded second-quarter field goals as the Buckeyes took a 10-6 lead, but Mendoza found neatly tucked a TD pass into Sarratt near the sideline on Indiana’s first possession of the third quarter, and that was all they needed.
The takeaway
Indiana: The Hoosiers showed everyone why they’re no longer taking a backseat to the Buckeyes or anyone else. Defensively, they were as stingy as ever. Offensively, they moved the ball and played keep-away — and did just enough for an historic victory.
Ohio State: The Buckeyes aren’t exactly rolling into the playoffs. They struggled — for a half — at Michigan and two halves against the Hoosiers. At times, Sayin showed his inexperience by missing reads and throws. Still, they’re the defending national champs and are as dangerous as anyone.

Washington’s New National Security Strategy Details How Trump 2.0 Will Respond To Multipolarity

Trump 2.0 just released its National Security Strategy (NSS).
It can be read in full here, but for those with limited time, the present piece will summarize its contents. The new NSS reconceptualizes, narrows, and reprioritizes US interests. Focus is placed on the primacy of nations over transnational organizations, preserving the balance of power through optimized burden-sharing, and the US’ reindustrialization that’ll be facilitated by securing critical supply chains. The Western Hemisphere is the top priority.
The “Trump Corrolary” to the Monroe Doctrine is the centerpiece and will seek to deny non-hemispheric competitors ownership or control of strategically vital assets in an allusion to China’s influence over the Panama Canal.
The NSS envisages enlisting regional champions and friendly forces to help ensure regional stability for preventing migrant crises, fight the cartels, and erode the aforesaid competitors’ influence. This aligns with the “Fortress America” strategy of restoring US hegemony in the hemisphere.
Asia is next on the NSS’ hierarchy of priorities. Together with its incentivized partners, the US will rebalance trade ties with China, compete more vigorously with it in the Global South in an allusion to challenging BRI, and deter China over Taiwan and the South China Sea.
Trade loopholes through third countries like Mexico will be closed, the Global South will tie its currencies more closely to the dollar, and Asian allies will grant the US greater access to their ports, etc., while ramping up defense spending.
As for Europe, the US wants it “to remain European, to regain its civilizational self-confidence, and to abandon its failed focus on regulatory suffocation” in order to avoid “civilizational erasure”.
The US will “manage European relations with Russia”, “build up the healthy nations of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe” in an allusion to the Polish-led “Three Seas Initiative”, and ultimately “help Europe correct its current trajectory.”
A hybrid set of economic and political tools will be employed to this end.
West Asia and Africa are at the bottom of the NSS’ priorities. The US foresees the first becoming a greater source of investment and destination of such while the second’s ties with the US will transition from a foreign aid paradigm to an investment and growth one centered on select partners. Like with the rest of the world, the US wants to keep the peace through optimized burden-sharing and without overextending itself, but it’ll also still keep an eye on Islamist terrorist activity in both regions too.
The following passage sums up the NSS’ new approach:
“As the United States rejects the ill-fated concept of global domination for itself, we must prevent the global, and in some cases even regional, domination of others.”
To that end, the balance of power must be maintained through pragmatic carrot-and-stick policies in conjunction with close partners, which includes securing critical supply chains (especially those in the Western Hemisphere). This is essentially how Trump 2.0 plans to respond to multipolarity.
The grand strategic goal is to restore the US’ central role in the global system, but if that’s not possible and it loses control of the Eastern Hemisphere to China, then Plan B is to retreat to the Western Hemisphere, which will be autarkic under the US’ hegemony if it succeeds in building “Fortress America”.
Trump 2.0’s NSS is very ambitious and will be more difficult to implement than it was to promulgate, but even partial success could radically reshape the global systemic transition in the US’ favor.
