“Five Nights at Freddy’s” sigue impulsando la taquilla en EEUU

Russian forces made advances in Ukraine as U.S. and Ukrainian officials prepared for a third day of peace talks in Miami.
Russia unleashed 51 missiles and 623 drone strikes on Dec. 6, which was observed as Armed Forces Day in Ukraine.
Ukraine shot down 30 missiles and neutralized 585 drones in the attack, which targeted residential buildings, energy facilities, and railways in 29 locations.
At least eight people were wounded in Saturday’s strikes, including three in the Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko.
“The night was tough,” Klymenko wrote in a translation of an X post on Dec. 6.
“Russia again struck civilian infrastructure with drones and missiles.”
As Jacki Thrapp details below for The Epoch Times, the barrage occurred after Russian forces advanced north and southeast of Myrnohrad and infiltrated positions in northwestern Pokrovsk, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) confirmed in its Dec. 5 report.
Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk are located in the southeastern part of the country, nearly 200 miles from the Russian border town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky.
Data reviewed by the nonprofit research organization found that even though Russian forces advanced on Myrnohrad, they have not encircled Ukrainian forces in the city as of Dec. 5. However, Russian forces are attempting to complete the isolation of the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad pocket, the ISW stated.
As Moscow continued escalations in Ukraine, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian negotiators Rustem Umerov and Andriy Hnatov discussed a security framework for postwar Ukraine in Florida on Friday.

It was the sixth meeting the parties have had over the course of two weeks.
“Both parties agreed that real progress toward any agreement depends on Russia’s readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace, including steps toward de-escalation and cessation of killings,” according to a summary of Friday’s meeting shared by Witkoff on X.
“Parties also separately reviewed the future prosperity agenda, which aims to support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, joint U.S.-Ukraine economic initiatives, and long-term recovery projects.”
Another round of discussions is scheduled for Dec. 6.
During a speech on Dec. 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the “warriors” who are “holding back the occupiers on all fronts.”
“I thank our servicemembers who, on the battlefield, do their utmost so that Ukraine has confidence at the negotiating table,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy thanked everybody who defended Ukraine and said, “Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine!”

Merrillville man guilty in estranged girlfriend’s death
A jury convicted a Merrillville man Friday in his estranged girlfriend’s death.
Dennis Jelks, 60, was found guilty of murder and a gun enhancement in the January 2021 death of Angela Carrier, 37, of Crown Point. The jury deliberated for over 4 hours.
His sentencing is Jan. 29.
Carrier went with relatives on Jan. 26, 2021 to the Merrillville Menards to get her mail from Jelks after a breakup. Once there, Jelks claimed he didn’t have it. He convinced Carrier to leave with him around 1:35 p.m., and she was never seen alive again.
Her mother Rose Jones said the couple had a “toxic” relationship that was “violent ‘all the time,’” court filings show. Jones testified previously she had broken up some of their fights and got into a “physical altercation” with Jelks.
Texts leading up to the Menards meetup showed Carrier was angry, saying Jelks was stalling on giving her mail back. Relatives testified she needed mail from Social Security to continue getting benefits.
“I told you you’re trying to postpone (things). It’s starting to piss me off Dennis, cuz (sic) that’s not right,” she wrote. “I’m to the point where (forget) it, I don’t want nothing. I don’t even want to talk anymore.”
In closing arguments Friday, Deputy Prosecutor Infinity Westberg called several of Jelks’ details on Carrier’s disappearance “lies” and said cell phone location data contradicted several things he told to police.
“The cell phone evidence does not lie,” she later said.
Jelks told investigators after leaving Menards, he went with Carrier to buy marijuana from a drug dealer named “Tone” near 42nd Avenue and Jackson Street. There, two car doors opened, Carrier got into a black car that took off.
He fell, dropped his keys and lost track of the other car, he said. Westberg said it wasn’t true.
She admitted it was a “circumstantial” case. Carrier was found shot twice in the head near a tree by a hunter at Gary’s Gleason Park on Jan. 30. There was no DNA tying Jelks to the crime scene. The revolver was not recovered.
Records showed Jelks never went to Tone’s house that day, Westberg said. Instead, Jelks’ phone called his twin brother Dwight Jelks starting at 1:57 p.m. Jan. 26 near Gleason Park. In total, he called his brother four times in about five minutes.
A woman who was staying at Jelks’ home with her friend called him on Jan. 26 after she thought the police knocked on the door. Jelks said she needed to go and his brother would give them a ride. The woman left so hastily, she left the oven on by mistake. She left without her dog and other items, filings show.
After Carrier disappeared, Dennis called several members of her family “to create this story” that he had nothing to do with her death, Westberg said. Her cell phone and hat were never found. She was found with $100, pills and cigarettes.
Det. Nick Wardrip testified he was assigned to the case in May 2024.
Defense lawyer Michael Lambert told jurors the evidence was akin to the “shiny” and “empty” Christmas gifts in a department store display window.
“He did not commit this crime,” the lawyer said.
Carrier struggled with drugs, Lambert wrote, citing her mother’s testimony, and would “go away for extended periods of time.” Her family said she would always call when she disappeared, prosecutors said.
If it took 15 minutes to reach Gleason Park from the Menards, Jelks had “seven minutes” to kill her, Lambert argued. A volatile relationship didn’t prove Jelks killed her, the lawyer said.
At 1:57 p.m., Jelks was “traveling” near Gleason Park looking for Carrier, Lambert said. Jelks appeared to nod in agreement with what his lawyer said.
The deer hunter who found her body had been in the same area on Jan. 26 from about 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Lambert said. If so, he would have seen Carrier’s body — not several days later when he was there on Jan. 30.
A theory that Carrier was killed close to where she was found was a relatively new one, noting police cut carpeting from Jelks’ trunk for DNA analysis and found nothing.
“This isn’t a popularity contest, this is a murder trial,” the lawyer said. “He didn’t kill that girl. He didn’t have time.”
A lighter found near Carrier’s body had traces of her other on-and-off boyfriend Joshua Harper’s DNA. Carrier’s own lighter was in her pocket. Westberg later countered that she could have been carrying two lighters. Harper was in a wheelchair and in physical therapy at the time for falling off a roof at a job site.
There was no established time of death, Lambert said. Following COVID-19 protocols, an autopsy wasn’t conducted for five more days. He noted the hunter was only interviewed a few weeks ago. His memory might have been better in 2021, he said.
Westberg retorted that the signs pointed to Jelks’ guilt. He sent messages and attempted to look for Carrier and cooperated with police where he believed they didn’t have evidence on him — such as letting them search the house where Carrier wasn’t killed.
The hunter reportedly saw a 3-foot pool of blood at Gleason Park “didn’t happen,” she said. None of the crime scene investigators spotted it, she said. The man was “shaky” on the 911 call and traumatized by what he saw, she argued.
Carrier didn’t have DNA under her fingernails, suggesting she was killed by someone she knew, Westberg said.
Jelks said Carrier was a “sweetheart” and he loved her to death.
“He did love her to death,” Westberg said.

In wake of fatal Portillo’s crash, Oswego officials partnering with Finnegan Project on new safety measures
Oswego officials say they are working alongside a family whose 2-year-old son was killed during a fatal crash at a Portillo’s restaurant in the village to improve public building safety standards in town.
The village recently announced it has partnered with The Finnegan Project, a nonprofit organization founded by the parents of Finnegan Trooper McKee, a 2-year-old boy killed in July when a vehicle crashed through the front entrance of the Portillo’s at 2810 Route 34 in Oswego.
Finnegan’s parents, Schyler and Christina McKee, initiated the nonprofit in memory of their son to advocate for the installation of protective barriers at public venues and provide support to families affected by similar incidents, village officials said in a news release.
Village President Ryan Kauffman in the wake of the tragedy directed staff to develop amendments to village building codes concerning protective barriers that were subsequently discussed by Oswego Village Board members.
The board unanimously supported building code changes and directed staff to proceed with the formal code amendment process.
The proposed ordinance, referred to as Finnegan’s Law, would include a new section to the village’s Unified Development Ordinance which details where vehicle impact protection devices would be required, as well as other details including impact resistance level, spacing and appearance.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors,” Kauffman said in a village news release. “This partnership with The Finnegan Project honors Finnegan’s memory and reflects our shared goal of preventing future tragedies through thoughtful design.”
The proposed amendments to the Village Code – under a section designated Vehicle Impact Protection – would require certain newly-constructed buildings and outdoor uses to install vehicle impact protection devices, such as bollards or planters, in front of entrances and unprotected walls. The areas include all public entrances in the B-1 Regional Business District and the M-1 General Manufacturing District and areas within residential districts such as churches or schools.
The areas include public entrances to residential care facilities, assisted living, nursing homes and hospice facilities, outdoor dining areas and outdoor play areas at day care centers, officials said.
The Oswego Village Board is set to give consideration to the matter at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
The Finnegan Project also aims to raise awareness about the frequency of vehicle-into-building crashes and the effectiveness of safety infrastructure, the release said.
“Finnegan’s bright spirit and warm-hearted ambition drive us to push for safer, more secure public spaces. Everything he did came from love and kindness, and it’s important to us that something protective and meaningful comes from this,” his parents Schyler and Christina McKee said in a joint statement.
Oswego intends to further assist The Finnegan Project in advocating for legislative changes concerning safety infrastructure at the state and federal levels as well as through generally recognized building codes, village officials said.
Locally, the village plans to provide outreach to existing businesses to inform them of any new safety regulations and provide guidelines for them to incorporate into their properties to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety as well, officials said.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has approved a revised plan for managing California’s Central Valley Project (CVP), with the goal of sending more water to farmers in the state
The revised operation, called Action 5, aligns with directives from Executive Order 14181, signed on Jan. 24 by President Donald Trump, which orders federal agencies to maximize water output from the CVP while complying with legal standards.
“With the signing of this Record of Decision, we are delivering on the promise of Executive Order 14181 to strengthen California’s water resilience,” Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said in a statement on Thursday.
Burgum also said the updated operations plan employs the state-of-the-art science to increase water deliveries while safeguarding the environment.
Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Andrea Travnicek said that Action 5 represents a forward-looking approach to water management that balances the needs of the state’s communities, agriculture, and ecosystems.
“By refining real-time governance and operational flexibility, we are ensuring that every drop of water is managed with precision, accountability, and purpose,” she said.
The change could increase yearly CVP distributions by 130,000 to 180,000 acre-feet, with the State Water Project gaining 120,000 to 220,000 acre-feet, depending on weather and California’s implementation of Action 5.
The new strategy overrides the December 2024 framework and incorporates advanced scientific tools for decision-making. The adjustments stay within the 2024 environmental impact study’s scope and are in line with biological assessments from NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Notable shifts include minor changes to Delta pumping, ending the Delta Summer and Fall Habitat Action, and removal of export-reduction ideas from California’s Healthy Rivers and Landscapes initiative.
The announcement occurs at the same time as the 90th anniversary of the CVP’s 1935 authorization, which created an expansive system of dams, reservoirs, and canals spanning 400 miles from Redding to Bakersfield, and serving up to 30 million people.
In December 2024, federal and state officials agreed to regulate CVP flows to protect against floods and droughts.
“The new framework supercharges our adaptive management and enables project operators to work with water users and the broader public to better manage the system to benefit millions of Californians and endangered fish species,” state water director Karla Nemeth said at the time. “Extreme storms and extended droughts mean we need to be as nimble as possible in operating our water infrastructure.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrated federal collaboration between the state and the then-Biden administration, claiming the future would be hotter and drier.
“That means we have to do everything we can now to prepare and ensure our water infrastructure can handle these extremes,” Newsom said at the time.
Deputy Assistant Secretary Mike Brain said the Central Valley Project “is critical to the state’s water supply future.”
Funding help came in September, with $1 billion for storage expansions, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) announced.

Suben a 5 los muertos en coche bomba que explotó en occidente de México

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO (AP) — La cifra de muertos por el coche bomba que estalló el sábado frente a la policía comunitaria de una localidad costera del estado de Michoacán, en el occidente de México, ascendió a cinco mientras que otras cinco permanecen hospitalizadas, informó la fiscalía estatal a medianoche.
La explosión tuvo lugar a mediodía en pleno centro de la localidad de Coahuayana, en la costa de Michoacán, un estado donde operan numerosos grupos criminales —incluido el poderoso Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación— y donde el gobierno acaba de lanzar un gran operativo de seguridad debido a la violencia.
La fiscalía estatal dijo que el vehículo que explotó fue una camioneta y que en el lugar se encontraron los restos de dos personas, de las que no dio más datos. Agregó que hubo ocho heridos trasladados a hospitales, todos integrantes de la policía comunitaria, tres de los cuales murieron mientras recibían atención médica.
Una de las personas que murió en el lugar de la explosión fue el conductor de la camioneta bomba, según había informado la víspera la fiscalía federal. Ambas instituciones investigan el suceso.
Videos posteriores a la explosión mostraban las ruedas y chasis de un vehículo totalmente calcinado junto a la comisaría de policía, un local contiguo con las entradas destrozadas, restos de tejados de lámina esparcidos por el lugar y hierros que volaron hasta la mediana de la gran avenida donde tuvo lugar la explosión.
El uso de explosivos —lanzados desde drones, enterrados como minas o escondidos en caminos — ha sido una técnica cada vez más utilizada por los grupos criminales en esta región aunque no es habitual que las coloquen en coches.
Según Héctor Zepeda, comandante de la policía comunitaria, la explosión fue tan fuerte que había restos humanos esparcidos por distintos lugares de la zona.
Esta policía es uno de los cuerpos de seguridad local que se formó hace más de una década durante el movimiento de las autodefensas civiles que se alzaron en armas contra los cárteles. Las policías comunitarias fueron luego legalizadas por el gobierno estatal aunque en algunos puntos habían sido infiltradas por criminales.
El suceso tuvo lugar mientras el gobernador del estado, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, participaba en un acto público con la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum en Ciudad de México para celebrar los siete años de gobiernos del partido oficialista Morena.

Suicide prevention course Dec. 11
Franciscan Health Munster is presenting a free suicide prevention course from 12:30-2 p.m. Dec. 11 the St. Clare Conference Room of the hospital at 701 Superior Ave.
The course aims to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training, the release said.

Valparaiso University honored with award
Valparaiso University was recently named winner of the 2025 Indiana Collegiate Action Network’s Illuminary Campus of the Year Award, a release said.
This award goes to a campus doing exemplary work in the areas of prevention and mental wellness, the release said. According to ICAN, the Prevention and Wellness Education Office was selected for its adaptability to changing structures and needs, as well as financial management of money while still offering evidence-based programs.
The Prevention and Wellness Education office, led by Natalie Muskin-Press, currently serves all of the Valparaiso University community through a wide variety of services both on an individual and community level.

Ataque con explosivos en el noreste de Colombia deja dos policías muertos

BOGOTÁ (AP) — Dos policías murieron el domingo en una ciudad del noreste de Colombia, cerca de la frontera con Venezuela, en un ataque con explosivos que la policía colombiana adjudicó a la guerrilla del Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), mientras el presidente colombiano pidió aumentar la presencia oficial en la zona.
“Buscarán crear violencia en la frontera y nuestro pie de fuerza en la frontera Colombia venezolana debe aumentar”, señaló el presidente Gustavo Petro en su cuenta de X al confirmar la muerte de un intendente y un subintendente.
El director de la policía colombiana, general William Ospina, ratificó en la misma red sobre dos “ataques terroristas” en Cúcuta, en el departamento del Norte de Santander. Uno cobró la vida de los agentes y, en otro barrio, dos soldados quedaron heridos, sin precisar las circunstancias de ambos hechos.
Medios colombianos reprodujeron imágenes de la zona donde ocurrió el hecho dejando ver los destrozos en una carretera por el ataque con explosivos, señalaron.
Según las primeras investigaciones, dijo el director policial, los ataques serían “una retaliación” del ELN “frente a “las acciones ofensivas” de la policía contra esa estructura ilegal.
Según la Cruz Roja Internacional (CICR), Colombia vive una intensificación de hostilidades y “fuerte deterioro de la situación humanitaria”, señaló la presidenta del organismo, Mirjana Spoljaric, en una reciente visita al país andino y pidió protección para la población civil.
El ELN, en armas desde 1964, negociaba la paz con el gobierno de Petro, pero los diálogos quedaron truncados tras una incursión violenta que dejó casi un centenar de muertos, en el Catatumbo, también en el Norte de Santander.
El ELN se disputa el control del territorio fronterizo con Venezuela con el “Frente 33”, una de las disidencias de las extintas Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) que no se acogió al acuerdo de paz firmado entre la guerrilla y el Estado en 2016.
El sábado, otro ataque con explosivos dejó siete heridos en Cauca, al suroeste del país. El mandatario colombiano afirmó que está lista la acusación ante la Corte Penal Internacional en contra del máximo cabecilla las disidencias de las FARC “alias Iván Mordisco” y contra otros jefes de la estructura a los que acusa de “narcoterrorismo”. No señaló cuando se presentará formalmente.
