Iran warns against US strikes as activists say protest death toll reaches 203
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran’s parliament speaker warned Sunday that the U.S. military and Israel would be “legitimate targets” if the U.S. strikes the Islamic Republic over the ongoing protests roiling the country, as threatened by President Donald Trump.
Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf made the threat after nationwide protests challenging Iran’s theocracy saw protesters flood the streets in the country’s capital and its second-largest city into Sunday morning, crossing the two-week mark. At least 203 people have died in violence surrounding the demonstrations, activists said, with fears the death toll is far higher.
With the internet down in Iran and phone lines cut off, gauging the demonstrations from abroad has grown more difficult.
Those abroad fear the information blackout is emboldening hard-liners within Iran’s security services to launch a bloody crackdown.
Trump offered support for the protesters, saying on social media that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous U.S. officials, said on Saturday night that Trump had been given military options for a strike on Iran, but hadn’t made a final decision.
Parliament rallies
Iranian state television broadcast the parliament session live. Qalibaf, a hard-liner who has run for the presidency in the past, gave a speech applauding police and Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, particularly its all-volunteer Basij, for having “stood firm” during the protests.
He went on to directly threaten Israel, “the occupied territory” as he referred to it, and the U.S. military, possibly with a pre-emptive strike.
“In the event of an attack on Iran, both the occupied territory and all American military centers, bases and ships in the region will be our legitimate targets,” Qalibaf said. “We do not consider ourselves limited to reacting after the action and will act based on any objective signs of a threat.”
Lawmakers rushed the dais in the Iranian parliament, shouting: “Death to America!”
It remains unclear just how serious Iran is about launching a strike, particularly after its air defenses were destroyed during the 12-day war in June with Israel. Any decision to go to war would rest with Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The U.S. military has said in the Mideast it is “postured with forces that span the full range of combat capability to defend our forces, our partners and allies and U.S. interests.” Iran targeted U.S. forces at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar back in June, while the U.S. Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet is stationed in the island kingdom of Bahrain.
Israel, meanwhile, is “watching closely” the situation between the U.S. and Iran, said an Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to not being authorized to speak to journalists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio overnight on topics including Iran, the official added.
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which relies on activists in Iran cross-checking information, offered the new death toll of 203 on Sunday, a large jump. Of those killed, 162 are protesters and 41 are members of the security forces, it said. The agency also acknowledged receiving claims of far more deaths that it was still assessing as over 3,280 others have been arrested.
The group has offered accurate tolls in previous rounds of unrest in the Islamic Republic. The Iranian government has not offered any overall casualty figures for the demonstrations.
The Associated Press has been unable to independently assess the toll, as communications with Iran have been cut.
Protests in Tehran and Mashhad
Online videos sent out of Iran, likely using Starlink satellite transmitters, purportedly showed demonstrators gathering in northern Tehran’s Punak neighborhood. There, it appeared authorities shut off streets, with protesters waving their lit mobile phones. Others banged metal while fireworks went off.
“The pattern of protests in the capital has largely taken the form of scattered, short-lived, and fluid gatherings, an approach shaped in response to the heavy presence of security forces and increased field pressure,” the Human Rights Activists News Agency said. “Reports were received of surveillance drones flying overhead and movements by security forces around protest locations, indicating ongoing monitoring and security control.”
In Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city some 725 kilometers (450 miles) northeast of Tehran, footage purported to show protesters confronting security forces. Protests also appeared to happen in Kerman, 800 kilometers (500 miles) southeast of Tehran.
Iranian state television on Sunday morning had their correspondents appear on the streets in several cities to show calm areas with a date stamp shown on screen. Tehran and Mashhad were not included.
Government rhetoric also ratcheted up Sunday. Ali Larijani, a top security official, accused some demonstrators of “killing people or burning some people, which is very similar to what ISIS does,” referring to the Islamic State group by an acronym.
State TV aired funerals of slain security force members while reporting another six had been killed in Kermanshah. In Fars province, violence killed 13 people, and seven security forces were killed in North Khorasan province, it added. It also showed a pickup truck full of bodies in body bags and later a morgue.
Even Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who had been trying to ease anger before the demonstrations exploded in recent days, offered a hardening tone in an interview aired Sunday.
“People have concerns, we should sit with them and if it is our duty, we should resolve their concerns,” Pezeshkian said. “But the higher duty is not to allow a group of rioters to come and destroy the entire society.”
More demonstrations planned Sunday
Iran’s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi asked in his latest message for demonstrators to take to the streets Sunday.
Demonstrators have shouted in support of the shah in some protests, but it isn’t clear whether that’s support for Pahlavi himself or a desire to return to a time before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Pahlavi’s support of and from Israel has drawn criticism in the past, particularly after the 12-day war.
The demonstrations began Dec. 28 over the collapse of the Iranian rial currency, which trades at over 1.4 million to $1, as the country’s economy is squeezed by international sanctions in part levied over its nuclear program. The protests intensified and grew into calls directly challenging Iran’s theocracy.

Pope Leo baptizes 20 infants in a tradition marking the end of the Christmas season
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV baptized 20 babies in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday beneath Michelangelo’s frescoed ceiling, continuing an annual tradition that marks the end of the Christmas holiday period at the Vatican.
Later, speaking to the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff offered his blessing to all infants receiving the sacrament of baptism in these days, “in particular those born in difficult conditions of health or external danger.”
In his first baptismal ceremony as pope, Leo celebrated the Lord’s gift of faith to the children, saying that it gives sense to the gift of life.
“When we know something is essential, we immediately seek it for those we love. Who among us, in fact, would leave a newborn without clothing or nourishment, waiting for them to choose when they grow up how to dress and what to eat?” the pontiff told the families gathered in the Sistine Chapel.
“Dearest ones, if food and clothing are necessary to live, faith is more than necessary, because with God, life finds salvation,’’ he said.
The pontiff personally administered the sacrament of baptism to the infants, who are the children of Vatican employees working at the Holy See. The parents approached the baptismal font placed within a bronze base representing the Tree of Life with the babies’ godparents and any siblings. The ceremony took place without tears and minimal fussing.
The celebration marks the feast day that recalls Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan and was established in 1981 by St. John Paul II. The event is depicted on the Sistine Chapel’s north wall in a fresco by Pietro Perugino.
During the ceremony, each father was given a candle representing the Christian light that “illuminates our path.”

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Minneapolis on Jan. 10 to protest the shooting of Renée Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, according to a Minneapolis Police Department estimate provided to The Epoch Times.

A protest organizer guessed that as many as 40,000 people attended the demonstration, thronging a large park and public thoroughfares. The Epoch Times could not confirm that estimate.
Demonstrators gathered to condemn ICE operations in Minneapolis after the fatal shooting of Good in the city on Jan. 7.
Protesters began to arrive for various rallies and marches across the city around 2 p.m. ET Saturday.
The nerve center was snow-covered Powderhorn Park, not far from George Perry Floyd Square—the site of the May 2020 incident that provoked national demonstrations and riots.
Police helicopters could be seen flying overhead as protesters arrived.
On the ground, however, the police presence was sparse. Instead, participants in, or organizers of, the demonstration could be seen directing traffic through the streets. Some verbal fights with frustrated motorists ensued.
At a makeshift memorial for Good near the site of the Portland Avenue shooting, a sign was set up calling for “national strikes to boot out the admin.” Some mourners lit candles. Others, who were dressed in Aztec-like headdresses, appeared to perform a ritual involving dancing, drums, and the burning of material in a handheld vessel.

The demonstrations on Jan. 10 came after smaller, more chaotic protests on the snowy evening of Jan. 9, when demonstrators in downtown Minneapolis targeted multiple hotels they believed to be hosting immigration agents.
Law enforcement ultimately detained 30 demonstrators over the course of the night and early morning. They were cited and released.
On Jan. 10, the temperature was colder, at around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, but no additional snow fell as the afternoon wore on.
Other signs of tension between immigration law enforcement and locals were evident on the ground.

One gas station near the protests displayed a sign warning ICE agents not to enter without a judicial warrant.
Anti-ICE graffiti was visible in and around the demonstrations, including at Floyd Square.
Protesters marching down Chicago Avenue bumped into another group marching near 34th Street.
Along Chicago Avenue, two parents who were participating in the demonstration could be heard telling their young boy, “This is a protest.”
A chant by protesters compared the Minneapolis Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and ICE: “MPD, KKK, ICE—they’re all the same.”

One protester held a sign that read, “We Won’t Stop Until Heads Drop Like in 1793,” referencing the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution.
Near the interstate, an activist who had positioned himself far from the action could be seen holding a sign reading, “Love the Alien As Yourself.”
By 10:45 p.m. ET on Jan. 10, the streets of Minneapolis were quieter.
A smaller group continued protesting at the sidewalk memorial to Good. Local police directed traffic on Portland Avenue.

What Happened
Good, an American citizen, was shot and killed during an encounter with ICE agents on Jan. 7.
The incident has met with clashing interpretations, with some defending Ross’s actions as self defense and others alleging he used excessive force.
Video shows that in the moments before the shooting, four ICE agents stopped their truck in the middle of the street, exited, and approached Good’s vehicle. The footage also shows Good’s female partner, Becca Good, heckling immigration law enforcement.
As one agent attempted to reach into Good’s car and open her door from the inside, Good turned the wheel to the right, away from Ross, and accelerated her car, allegedly striking the agent, who fired his weapon, according to video and audio. The footage also records Good’s wife, who was outside the vehicle, telling her to “drive, baby, drive.”

The administration has described Good as a “domestic terrorist” who was attempting to harm Ross and other ICE agents using her vehicle after earlier interfering with ICE operations in the city.
In a Jan. 8 letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem led by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), more than 150 members of Congress disputed that interpretation, describing the shooting as an example of the use of “unnecessary force on civilians without provocation.”
Noem has stated that Ross “went to the hospital” and “received treatment,” though no details on the injuries for which he was treated have been officially released.

Melton recaps 2025 for Gary, shares 2026 goals
Last year was big for Gary, said Mayor Eddie Melton, but he isn’t planning to stop the work in 2026.
“Everything that we’ve done in these first two years (of the Melton administration) has built confidence in our partnerships with the state and local government, which is allowing us to execute these projects,” Melton said. “That’s important, and it’s instilled confidence in developers and investors looking to Indiana from other states.”

As he looked forward to 2026, Melton reminisced on some of Gary’s biggest accomplishments in 2025, and detailed how those would shape his goals for 2026. Melton also spoke about some of the city’s challenges, including legislation that will impact the city financially.
In 2025, Melton was most proud of the city’s work to stabilize its finances and to figure out how to improve the delivery of services and resources it already has. Gary worked to be more fiscally responsible, and the city started its own rainy day fund.
“I’m always looking at pending and existing legislation that could impact the city of Gary, financially or not,” Melton said. “I’m trying to put us in a more solid financial position to weather storms when they arise. So, I think for me, that’s a huge success because Gary has historically faced a lot of fiscal challenges with our low collection rate of property taxes and a shrinking population.”
Melton believes financial stability will help as the city braces for challenges from Senate Enrolled Act 1, which was passed during Indiana’s 2025 legislative session and will lead to cuts in property tax revenues for cities, schools and other taxing districts.

Financial stability will also help as Gary feels the effects of House Enrolled Act 1448, which requires the city to pay more than $12 million to East Chicago and Michigan City after a mistake by the state comptroller that was supposed to address the financial impact after the move of Majestic Star casinos.
Gary owes more than $6.4 million to East Chicago and more than $5.7 million to Michigan City, and payments will start this year. Money will be deducted from state comptroller funds and money appropriated by the Indiana General Assembly, and funds will be withheld for 10 years.
Melton’s administration worked well with the Gary Common Council, he said, and the mayor plans to continue that strong relationship in 2026.
“Traditionally, the city is used to seeing the executive and legislative branch in opposition, and that’s something we wanted to make sure we can change,” Melton said.

In 2025, Gary closed multiple deals that made Melton excited for the future, he said, including the Lake County Convention Center. In May, the Lake County Board of Commissioners selected a proposal from Gary and Hard Rock Northern Indiana for the county convention center.
As the selected bid, Gary and Hard Rock plan to build a 145,000-square-food convention center and Hard Rock Hotel near the casino, according to Post-Tribune archives. The plan is for the property also includes two additional hotels, including one REVERB by Hard Rock Hotel, and two restaurants and retail spaces.
In 2023, as an Indiana state senator, Melton created Senate Bill 434, which established a fund for the Lake County Convention Center, the blighted property demolition fund and new train station funding in downtown Gary.
“In the process, we’re now putting together agreements and locking in all of the necessary steps that the legislation called for,” Melton said. “That’s going to be great for the city, and it’s going to lead to more property owners, developers, restaurants and jobs.”

Another 2025 highlight for Melton was the groundbreaking of a $60 million FedEx facility, which Gov. Mike Braun praised in an October ceremony.
“The region often gets overlooked,” Braun said. “But this is going to inspire a lot of people to invest here, and it’s going to give a lot of confidence to our state government to make sure it’s a comeback, and it’s a renaissance. … We’re just getting started.”
The facility, located in Buffington Harbor, is expected to create about 600 jobs in Gary. Melton called the city “a logistics gold mine,” adding that the city has access to ports, rail lines and the Gary/Chicago International Airport.
“FedEx is going to be huge for Gary,” Melton said. “It shows how we can collaborate with the state and federal government to make the city a true economic engine in the Midwest.”

Another major win for the city in 2025, Melton said, was Nippon Steel’s $14.1 billion investment in U.S. Steel, which would include a large investment in the company’s Gary Works facility. President Donald Trump approved the investment in February after former President Joe Biden blocked an acquisition after a review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States cited national security concerns.
According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing when the transaction was finalized, Nippon plans to invest $3.1 billion in the Gary Works facility from 2025 to 2028. In 2025, Nippon plans to invest $400 million, followed by $900 million in 2026, $800 million in 2027 and $1.1 billion in 2028.
In 2026, Melton is dedicated to working more with private sector partners to ensure Gary sees more business throughout the city. Gary officials have been dedicated to growing the city’s tax base, Melton said, especially as they prepare for the effects of SEA 1 and HEA 1448.
Melton is also prepared to invest in housing citywide, and he’s working alongside the Gary Common Council to do so. In November 2025, the council unanimously approved changes to the down payment assistance program, which was created from the use of American Rescue Plan Act funds in December 2024. The program, at first, was limited to first responders, who would receive up to $30,000, and city employees, including those at the Gary Sanitary District and Gary/Chicago International Airport, would receive up to $18,000.

The expanded program would also provide up to $30,000 to teachers and health care workers who plan to buy a home and live within Gary city limits. City employees will also receive up to $30,000 through the expanded program.
“We’re working to connect them with local banks that can layer that with their other products to help get folks to be homeowners, which then creates generational wealth,” Melton said.
This year, Melton hopes to communicate the city’s worth with corporate partners, including Hard Rock and U.S. Steel, he said. City leadership plan to rely on corporate partners to identify ways that they can further invest in Gary.
Melton wants to bring people to Gary through events and initiatives, including the Gary Air Show, which had nearly 250,000 people at its 2025 show.
Melton is also dedicated to paving city streets to make travel safer. City leadership is relying on a previously made financial plan to figure out how to finance that and other projects.
“Sustainability is what 2026 is going to be all about,” Melton said. “We’re going to work towards continuous growth and growing in a way that’s sustainable and investing in our people and in more quality of life initiatives.”

SAN FRANCISCO DE YARE, Venezuela (AP) — Cuando Diógenes Angulo fue liberado el sábado de una prisión venezolana tras un año y cinco meses, él, su madre y su tía temblaban y se les dificultaba encontrar las palabras. Cerca de allí, al menos una docena de familias esperaban poder tener una reunificación similar.

The multi-national “Will for Peace 2026” naval exercises began Saturday off the coast of Cape Town, hosted by South Africa, and is set to run for one week. It is widely being described as a BRICS and “BRICS+” naval drill and saw a Russian warship arrive off South Africa’s primary naval base on Friday.
The Russians joined Chinese and Iranian vessels for the drills, along with other BRICS members Indonesia, Ethiopia and Brazil – which participated as observers. The nation heading up the drill is China, and it’s being seen as an attempt of BRICS and Global South countries to flex their collective military might in the wake of the Trump-ordered ousting of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. The other members of the bloc – India, Egypt and Saudi Arabia – are not represented at the drills.
Naturally it is especially Iran which could be a ripe target for the next Trump regime change action, as it’s not yet gone nuclear. But Tehran wants to showcase its much more powerful nuclear-armed friends China and Russia, which have defense and economic cooperation agreements with the Islamic Republic.
South Africa’s defense force has described that the exercises will allow participating navies “to exchange best practices and improve joint operational capabilities, which contributes to the safety of shipping routes and overall regional maritime stability.”
This will make already somewhat strained relations with Washington even more delicate for Pretoria. With this US relationship in mind, a separate statement emphasized that the drills were organized and agreed to significantly before last weekend’s US strikes on Venezuela.
But tensions have ratcheted particularly after Washington expelled South Africa’s ambassador last year and slapped the country with 30% trade tariffs. The Trump administration has also long complained about violent persecution against South Africa’s minority White farmer population.

Some commentators have questioned why Brics+ members are carrying out military exercises together, given the grouping is an economic alliance. “There are members of Brics+ that are diametrically opposed to each other politically and even have hot border skirmishes between them,” defence analyst Dean Wingrin told the BBC.
It is not the first time South Africa has had naval exercises with China and Russia. The first was called “Mosi”, which means “smoke” in South Africa’s Tswana language, and took place in 2019 with little fanfare.

But as for wanting to distance itself from being seen as ‘too close’ to China and Russia, a South African Defense Ministry official has described to AFP, “Let us not press panic buttons because the USA has got a problem with countries,” and that “Those are not our enemies” – in vague reference to the US and Western alliance.
“Let’s focus on cooperating with the BRICS countries and make sure that our seas, especially the Indian Ocean and Atlantic, they are safe,” the official added.

BERLÍN (AP) — Alemania rechazó enérgicamente las acusaciones del secretario de Salud estadounidense Robert F. Kennedy Jr de que está violando la autonomía del paciente, especialmente durante la pandemia de COVID-19.
“Las declaraciones del secretario de Salud de Estados Unidos son completamente infundadas, incorrectas en cuanto a los hechos y deben ser rechazadas”, declaró la ministra de Salud alemana, Nina Warken, en un comunicado el sábado por la noche.
Kennedy dijo en un video publicado el sábado por la mañana que había enviado una carta a la ministra alemana basada en informes provenientes de Alemania que indicaban que el gobierno estaba “limitando la capacidad de las personas para actuar según sus propias convicciones cuando enfrentan decisiones médicas”.
