Immigrant Secret Service Agent Leaks JD Vance’s Travel Details

Journalist James O’Keefe published a shocking report Tuesday about how a Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s security detail leaked details about his travels to one of O’Keefe’s undercover reporters.
Furthermore, the agent, Tomas Escotto, only became a citizen in 2018, he voted for Joe Biden for president in 2020, and he “hates ICE,” according to O’Keefe’s report, which comes on the heels of a man attacking Vance’s Cincinnati home with a hammer earlier this month.
Escotto, who may have broken the law with his leaks, has reportedly been placed on administrative leave and has had his security clearance revoked.
As is typical with O’Keefe’s journalism, Escotto was apparently catfished by the undercover female reporter—meeting her on the dating app Tinder. Footage shows Escotto spilling the beans about his job to the reporter during a dinner date. He later texted her photos of sensitive locations, as well as details of Vance’s travel plans—telling the reporter in on Dec. 26 that the vice president would be in Ohio for four to five days before traveling to Florida for the weekend.
Escotto even sent images from Air Force Two at one point.
O’Keefe said typically he gives the government a day or two to respond to his forthcoming reports. But in this case, he worked with the Secret Service and agreed to redact information that could compromise Vance’s security.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn issued a statement in response to O’Keefe’s reporting.
“The U.S. Secret Service has no tolerance for any behavior that could potentially compromise the safety, privacy or trust of our protectees,” he said.
“This incident is under investigation and the employee involved has been placed on administrative leave with his clearance suspended and access to agency facilities and systems revoked. The U.S. Secret Service has also issued an order for all personnel to retake the agency’s required anti-espionage training… The U.S. Secret Service deeply apologizes to the Vance family for this violation of their trust and privacy.”
Quinn also reportedly issued an internal memo about the matter, complaining about O’Keefe’s tactics.
“Over the past several months, an agency employee was deliberately targeted and manipulated by a citizen-journalism media organization that misrepresented itself in an effort to get close to the employee and expose sensitive information. This is the second time in less than a year that our personnel have been subjected to this same deceptive tactic,” he said.
“Sadly in this instance, the employee failed to meet the standards demanded of this agency and engaged in conduct that runs counter to our values, our policies, and the training we provide to prevent exactly this type of compromise,” he added.
Earlier this month, a man encroached onto Vance’s property in Ohio, breaking windows and causing other damage. The Secret Service heard a loud noise at the home around midnight and found a person who had broken a window with a hammer and was trying to get into the house.
The attacker in that case, William D DeFoor, who was born biologically male but identifies as a woman, is in jail pending trial.

After Supreme Court defeat, Trump administration looking to settle lawsuit over Illinois National Guard deployment
After a defeat at the U.S. Supreme Court, lawyers for the Department of Justice told a federal judge Wednesday they’re looking to settle a litigation over President Donald Trump’s controversial efforts to deploy National Guard troops to the Chicago area to bolster immigration enforcement.
The development came as U.S. District Judge April Perry held a status hearing on next steps in the lawsuit brought by Illinois, which had been headed toward a lengthy preliminary injunction hearing over the legality of Trump’s mobilization of the Guard.
The Department of Justice’s case took a blow, however, three weeks ago when the Supreme Court denied a request from the Trump administration to allow the Republican president to deploy troops to Illinois streets while the court battle played out.
Lawyers for Attorney General Kwame Raoul have since argued that although the high court’s ruling made no final determinations, it “effectively resolves as a matter of law” that the federalization and deployment orders by Trump were illegal.
In court Wednesday, DOJ attorney Christopher Edelman told Perry they have “obtained authorization” from senior administration officials to resolve the case by settlement, and requested a 30-day stay in the case while terms are negotiated.
Christopher Wells, a lawyer for the state, said they were “optimistic” that a settlement can be reached but asked for a quicker timeline.
Perry gave both sides until Jan. 28 to negotiate and submit another status report, and asked the parties to come back for another status hearing on Jan. 30.
Potential settlement terms were not discussed in court.
The amicable hearing was in stark contrast to the emotional proceedings in the case just a few months ago, which played out under dramatically different circumstances.
When the lawsuit was filed in October, Operation Midway Blitz was in full swing, with near-daily clashes between immigration agents and protesters on the streets and outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in suburban Broadview.
At the time, National Guard troops from Illinois and Texas had already been “federalized” and were assembling at bases for imminent deployment.
Now, those forces have been largely demobilized, though some 195 Illinois National Guard troops remained in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as of last week “completing the demobilization process,” which was expected to conclude this week.
The fight landed at the Supreme Court days after Perry issued a temporary restraining order barring Trump from deploying Guard troops to the state. That order has since been continued indefinitely pending the resolution of the lawsuit.

On Dec. 23, the divided opinion handed down by the conservative-majority Supreme Court represented a significant political victory for Gov. JB Pritzker and other state Democratic leaders in their escalating battle with the White House’s plans to federalize troops on U.S. soil to assist in mass deportation efforts.
“At this preliminary stage, the Government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois,” the high court’s order said. “Thus, at least in this posture, the Government has not carried its burden to show that (the law) permits the President to federalize the Guard in the exercise of inherent authority to protect federal personnel and property in Illinois.”
Three of the court’s conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, lodged dissents, with Thomas and Alito writing that the court “has unnecessarily and unwisely departed from standard practice.”
A week after the ruling, a defiant Trump posted on social media that he was ordering the National Guard removed from Illinois, but threatened to return.
“We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again – Only a question of time!” the president wrote.

Deer Park crash leaves one dead, others injured
A 95-year-old Palatine man was killed and several people were injured in a crash along Lake Cook Road in Deer Park on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
In a news release, the office stated that the sheriff’s office investigators are investigating the accident. The identity of the man killed has yet to be released.
According to the release, at about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, 911 callers reported a serious traffic crash at the intersection of Lake Cook and Quentin roads. Moments before, deputies had been dispatched for a disabled vehicle at the same location.
Deputies found a man dead in the roadway, along with two “heavily damaged vehicles,” the release said.
A preliminary investigation determined a westbound 2006 Honda Accord, driven by the 95-year-old man, broke down in a westbound lane of Lake Cook Road, just east of Quentin Road. It was in the center lane, between the left-turn lane and outside-through lane, the release said.
Based on witness statements, the elderly man exited his vehicle and began looking underneath the car’s engine area. As the driver was under the vehicle, a westbound 2024 Honda HR-V, driven by a 30-year-old Cary man, struck the Accord from behind.
The crash caused “major injuries” to the man under the car, and he died at the scene, the release said. A 77-year-old Barrington woman in the Accord was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The HR-V driver and passenger, a 30-year-old Arlington Heights woman, were both transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
A school bus, only occupied by the driver, that was waiting to turn left onto southbound Quentin Road from westbound Lake Cook Road, was sideswiped during the crash, the release said. The driver was uninjured.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is being scheduled, according to the release, and the crash remains under investigation.

US suspending immigrant visa processing from 75 countries over public assistance
WASHINGTON — The State Department says it will suspend the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries whose nationals are deemed likely to require public assistance while living in the United States.
The State Department, led by Secretary Marco Rubio, said Wednesday it had instructed consular officers to halt immigrant visa applications from the countries affected in accordance with a broader order issued in November that tightened rules around potential immigrants who might become “public charges” in the U.S. The suspension will not apply to applicants seeking non-immigrant, or temporary tourist or business visas.
“The Trump administration is bringing an end to the abuse of America’s immigration system by those who would extract wealth from the American people,” the department said in a statement. “Immigrant visa processing from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassess immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.”
The statement did not identify which countries would be affected by the pause, but President Donald Trump’s administration has already severely restricted immigrant and non-immigrant visa processing for citizens of dozens of countries, many of them in Africa.
The suspension will begin on Jan. 21.

Clarendon Hills to retain Paul Dalen as village manager
Clarendon Hills village President Eric Tech has decided to scrap plans to search for a new village manager and, instead, continue to have acting village manager Paul Dalen work in that position.
Dalen, who grew up in Clarendon Hills, became acting village manager Oct. 1 with the resignation of village manager Zach Creer. Dalen had been the Clarendon Hills public safety director since February 2024, and prior to that was police chief for six years, a position he was appointed to after working in the village since 1994.
“Paul Dalen’s decades of service to Clarendon Hills speak volumes about his commitment to this community,” said Tech, who discussed his decision to keep Dalen as villager manager with some Village Board members “His experience, integrity, and calm leadership have helped ensure stability and progress, and we are confident the village will continue to thrive under his guidance.”
Tech said Dalen will continue as village manager “for the foreseeable future,” and Dalen said he will stay on “as long as needed.”
“It’s an honor to continue serving Clarendon Hills,” Dalen said. “I truly enjoy working alongside our department heads and the Village Board as we pursue strategic objectives and continue building a strong, responsive organization for our residents.”
Assistant village manager Mera Johson said Dalen has been a great fit for the village during his time as acting village manager.

“He works so well with everyone, he knows the village so well, and many residents know him because he’s been a part of the community for so long,” she said.
Tech said over the past several months, with Dalen serving as acting village manager, village operations have reflected a stable, organized and positive direction marked by effective collaboration between staff, department leadership and the Village Board.
The decision by Tech to keep Dalen on as village manager came after a process had started to do a search for someone to fill the position. Johnson previously said she was not interested.
That process included a survey of all Village Board members about priorities and what they were looking for in a new village manager, along with a review of the job description.
“Paul’s unique background gives him a rare and valuable perspective,” Tech said. “He understands our organization from the ground up, and that insight has been instrumental in maintaining continuity and forward momentum.”

Saks Fifth Avenue seeks bankruptcy protection
The owner of Saks Fifth Avenue is seeking bankruptcy protection, buffeted by rising competition and the massive debt it took on to buy its rival in the luxury sector, Neiman Marcus, just over a year ago.
Saks Global has secured roughly $1.75 billion in financing, the New York company said as filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday in the Southern District of Texas.
The private company said that stores will remain open as it restructures company debt, meaning that it will honor the programs it has for customers. Suppliers and employees will be paid, Saks said.
There are about 33 Saks stores and 36 Neiman Marcus locations, according to the company, as well as two Bergdorf Goodman stores and roughly 70 Saks Off 5th discount stores.
“This is a defining moment for Saks Global, and the path ahead presents a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the foundation of our business and position it for the future,” said Geoffroy van Raemdonck, who took over for CEO and Executive Chairman Richard Baker this week. Baker had assumed control after the company’s CEO Marc Metrick, stepped down earlier this month.
When Saks said that it would buy Neiman Marcus for $2.65 billion in the summer of 2024, the goal was to create a powerhouse in a luxury sector that had grown more fragmented. Online sellers were siphoning customers and big name brands had begun to sell goods from their own stores.
But the tie-up with Nieman Marcus only worsened Saks’ debt situation as luxury sales weakened.
Global sales of luxury goods are expected to contract for the second straight year in 2026 as consumers anxious about the global economy pare back their spending, according to a study by Bain & Co. consultancy released in November.
Hudson’s Bay, Canada’s oldest company, began liquidating all but six of its stores in March 2025.
The upscale department store landscape has volatile in recent years.
Neiman Marcus entered bankruptcy protection for about four months in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic spread. The privately held department store chain was forced to close its stores for several months during the pandemic like other competitors such as Lord & Taylor.
Lord & Taylor sought bankruptcy protection in August of that year, then said it would close all of its stores and operate as an online retailer only.
The century-old department store Nordstrom agreed to be taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal last year.
Sales at the long-suffering Macy’s have begun to improve under new CEO Tony Spring, who has shuttered unprofitable stores and improved service. He’s also trying to attract the same luxury shoppers who power sales at Bloomingdale’s and upscale beauty retailer Bluemercury, which are both owned by Macy’s.
There is concern among vendors about Saks and how things will move forward.
“They’re very nervous, very concerned, very worried about spring deliveries for merchandise that they’ve already produced,” said Gary Wassner, CEO of Hilldun Corp., which ensures suppliers get paid for products shipped to retailers. “They weren’t able to complete deliveries on what they had produced for the fourth quarter of (2025), so they’re sitting with that inventory.”
Wassner said Saks Global accounted for 40% to 50% of the business of some of his clients. He said that he told his clients to stop shipping to Saks last month given the uncertainty.
Wassner said that his clients have $130 million in spring orders waiting to be delivered to Saks. They are seeking guarantees of payment from Hilldun before shipping.
Saks said that it has financing commitments of $1.5 billion from some of its creditors and another $240 million in “incremental liquidity” from its lenders.
This year’s North American Car of the Year award winner announced
The Dodge Charger won the 2026 North American Car of the Year award, while the Ford Maverick Lobo took the crown for the truck honors, and the Hyundai Palisade won the utility award.
The awards were announced Wednesday morning during an Automotive Press Association event at the start of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Automakers prize the awards, which are decided by a group of journalists from the U.S. and Canada who evaluate factors such as vehicle innovation, design, performance, driver satisfaction and more in their decisions.
The honors are considered a key gauge for how media perceive automakers’ new and redesigned vehicles, and buyers often use them in selecting vehicles for purchase.
In addition to the winning Dodge Charger midsize car, car finalists included the Honda Prelude hybrid sports coupe and the Nissan Sentra compact car.
The truck finalists this year included the Ram 1500 Hemi alongside the Ram 2500.
The remaining utility finalists were the Lucid Gravity luxury electric vehicle and Nissan Leaf small electric crossover SUV.
This year’s finalists represented a mix of internal combustion engine, hybrid and electric vehicles.
