More than 10,800 flights canceled Sunday as massive winter storm sweeps across US
NASHVILLE — A massive winter storm made for a brutal travel day Sunday, with widespread cancellations and delays at some of the nation’s busiest airports.
Widespread snow, sleet and freezing rain threatened nearly 180 million people — more than half the U.S. population — in a path stretching from the southern Rocky Mountains to New England, the National Weather Service said Saturday night. After sweeping through the South, the storm moved into the Northeast Sunday, and was expected to dump about 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters) of snow from Washington through New York and Boston.
More than 10,800 flights were canceled on Sunday, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said that as of Sunday morning, the storm is the highest experienced cancellation event since the pandemic.
By Sunday afternoon, the majority of flights were canceled at busy airports in the Northeast and elsewhere. LaGuardia Airport in New York closed Sunday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency said on its website the busy Queens airport grounded flights until 8 p.m.
In Philadelphia, 94% of flights, 326 flights, were canceled. Ninety-one percent of flights, 433 flights, were canceled at LaGuardia Airport in New York. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport had 460 flights canceled, about 79% of flights, according to FlightAware.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport said on its website that all airlines had canceled departing flights for the day, about 420 flights.
Significant disruptions also hit major airport hubs in Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Atlanta, home to the nation’s busiest airport.
Allan Lengel of Detroit planned to return Monday from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the temperature has been in the 80s. But he’s staying until Wednesday after Delta suggested he change his reservation because of the weather impact on flights.
“Can’t say I’m disappointed. Frankly, I had been thinking of returning later because of frigid weather,” Lengel, 71, said, referring to conditions in Michigan.
American Airlines had canceled over 1,400 flights for Sunday, about 46% of its scheduled flights for Sunday, according to FlightAware. Delta Air Lines reported over 1,300 cancellations and Southwest Airlines reported over 1,260 cancellations for the day, while United Airlines had about 900. JetBlue had more than 570 canceled flights, accounting for roughly 71% of its schedule for the day.
Vikrant Vaze, a Dartmouth professor specializing in commercial aviation logistics, said recovery from the storm cancellations and delays will take days if not longer. And even for travelers who aren’t in areas that were directly affected by weather, cascading delays could still affect their travel plans.
“Because there are so many different airlines involved, I think it’s going to come down heavily to the individual airline’s network structure, the extent of hit that each of them has had, and just the intrinsic capacity of the airlines to handle these massive disruptions,” he said.
My flight was canceled, now what?
If you’re already at the airport, get in line to speak to a customer service representative. If you’re still at home or at your hotel, call or go online to connect to your airline’s reservations staff. Either way, it helps to also research alternate flights while you wait to talk to an agent.
Most airlines will rebook you on a later flight for no additional charge, but it depends on the availability of open seats.
Can I get booked on another airline?
You can, but airlines aren’t required to put you on another carrier’s flight. Some airlines, including most of the biggest carriers, say they can put you on a partner airline, but even then, it can be a hit or miss.
Am I owed a refund?
If your flight was canceled and you no longer want to take the trip, or you’ve found another way to get to your destination, the airline is legally required to refund your money — even if you bought a non-refundable ticket. It doesn’t matter why the flight was canceled.
The airline might offer you a travel credit, but you are entitled to a full refund. You are also entitled to a refund of any bag fees, seat upgrades or other extras that you didn’t get to use.

Democrats vow to oppose homeland security funding bill. That increases the chance of a shutdown.
WASHINGTON — Democratic senators are vowing to oppose a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security following the shooting death of a 37-year-old Minnesota man, a stand that increases the prospect of a partial government shutdown by the end of the week.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, in a social media post Saturday night, hours after the shooting, said that what is happening in Minnesota is “appalling” and that Democrats “will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.”
Six of the 12 annual spending bills for the current budget year have been signed into law by President Donald Trump. Six more are awaiting action in the Senate. If senators fail to act by midnight Friday, funding for agencies covered under those six bills will lapse.
Republicans will need some Democratic support to pass the remaining spending bills in time to avoid a partial shutdown. That support was already in question after Renee Good, a mother of three, was fatally shot and killed earlier this month by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis. But the fatal shooting Saturday of Alex Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse, quickly prompted Democrats to take a more forceful stand.
“Democrats sought common sense reforms in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill, but because of Republicans’ refusal to stand up to President Trump, the DHS bill is woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses of ICE,” said Schumer, D-N.Y. “I will vote no.”
A deal begins to unravel
Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee and key negotiator on the funding package, had been pushing her colleagues to vote for the homeland security bill, arguing that Democrats had successfully fought off major increases to the ICE budget.
But in the wake of the shooting, Murray said Sunday on X that “I will NOT support the DHS bill as it stands.”
“Federal agents cannot murder people in broad daylight and face zero consequences,” Murray wrote.
Federal officials have defended the actions of the agents involved in the Good and Pretti shootings as justified. Democrats said video released of both shootings showed otherwise, and some Republicans are calling for thorough investigations.
“The events in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing,” Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., posted on X. “The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. There must be a full joint federal and state investigation. We can trust the American people with the truth.”
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., wants a “thorough and impartial investigation” into the shooting and said “any administration official who rushes to judgment and tries to shut down an investigation before it begins are doing an incredible disservice to the nation and to President Trump’s legacy.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. said Democrats should reconsider their threat to not support DHS funding and work with him to “end the mess created by sanctuary city policies.”
“Now is not the time to defund one of our major national security priorities: border protection,” Graham said on X.
Funding puzzle will be hard to solve
The growing backlash from Democrats puts Republican leaders in the Senate in a difficult position.
Much of the government, including the Department of Defense, continues to operate on a short-term bill that provides funding only through Friday.
Republican leaders had hoped to avoid another shutdown after last fall’s 43-day closure that revolved around Democrats’ insistence on extending federal subsidies that make health coverage more affordable for those enrolled in the Affordable Care Act marketplace.
Before Pretti’s death, many Democrats felt the same way about a potential shutdown, lending support in the House to most of the remaining appropriations bills, with DHS the exception.
The House sent the six funding bills to the Senate as a package, and that makes it exceedingly difficult to strip out the homeland security portion, as Murray and other Democrats are demanding.
The path ahead is uncertain. The Senate is not scheduled to return to session until Tuesday, due to the snowstorm. The House plans to be out of session this week and would have to pass the funding package again if it is changed.
Democrats are pushing for policy changes to be added to the homeland security spending bill that would force ICE agents to use warrants for immigration arrests, mandate strengthened training, require agents to identify themselves and have Border Patrol agents stay on the border rather than assisting ICE with immigration raids in the interior of the country.
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, the top Democrat on the subcommittee that oversees homeland security funding, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that Congress cannot fund a department “that is murdering American citizens, that is traumatizing little boys and girls across the country in violation of the law.”
One by one, Democrats stake out opposition
Democratic senators were scheduled to participate in conference call Sunday evening to discuss the next steps. House Democrats held their own caucus call in the morning with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and the state’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, both former congressmen.
Several other Democratic senators announced they would vote “no” on homeland security money, including some who had helped Republicans end the record shutdown last year.
“The abuses of power we are seeing from ICE in Minneapolis and across the country are un-American and cannot be normalized,” Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., said in a post on X. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., also said she opposes that portion of the package.
Minnesota’s Democratic senators also indicated they will oppose the DHS funding bill.
“For those asking where we go from here: Not voting to fund ICE is a great place for us to start,” Sen. Tina Smith wrote on X.
“We oppose the ICE funding bill. We call for a full and transparent investigation with state officials,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar said. ”And we call on our Republican colleagues to stand up. They know this is wrong.”
Why the entire government wouldn’t shut down
The progress that Congress has made so far on spending bills means that much of the federal government’s work would continue even if lawmakers are unable to complete the job.
A bill that Trump signed Friday funds the departments of Justice, Commerce and the Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through the end of the budget year in September.
The Department of Agriculture was funded from a previous measure, which means a shutdown shouldn’t stop food assistance this time.
But other critical operations of the government would be disrupted.

Scientists at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) are developing a “reverse solar” panel, called a thermoradiative diode, which generates electricity by emitting infrared light (heat) into cold surroundings.
The device works by capturing heat absorbed by the Earth during the day and radiating it out at night, offering a way to generate power when traditional solar panels are inactive.
While currently producing a small amount of power, the long-term goal for this technology is to power small devices overnight or even supply energy to satellites when they pass through the dark side of their orbit.
On a global level, solar energy has grown exponentially over the last few decades as costs have plummeted and demand has risen accordingly. It is estimated that the world added a third more solar power in 2025 than it did in 2024, marking a remarkable quantity of added capacity. But while renewables are proving too cheap to fail, there are some notable drawbacks to the rapid addition of these resources – most notably the insufficient co-addition of supportive grid and transmission infrastructure and the variability of solar and wind energy, both of which pose significant threat to energy security around the world.
Unlike fossil fuels, the level of production of which can be manipulated at will to meet demand, solar and wind energy are dependent upon natural variables outside of human control. The production rate of solar panels depends on the length of day and the quality of the sunlight, and the most productive hours are often at odds with demand peaks.
But a team of scientists in Australia is working on a way to fix that problem by developing a novel type of solar panel that could work at night. It’s a sort of solar panel in reverse, which works by emitting light rather than absorbing it. Instead of using photovoltaics to capture sunlight, this device uses a semiconductor called a thermoradiative diode capable of converting heat into energy. The heat that these devices are using is solar energy, but captured through the heat absorbed by the Earth during sunlight hours, which is then released as infrared energy even well after the sun has set.
“If you were to look at the Earth at night, what you’d see with an infrared camera is the Earth glowing,” says Professor Ned Ekins-Daukes, who leads the research team developing these thermoradiative ‘solar panels’ at Sydney’s University of New South Wales (UNSW). “What’s happening is the Earth is radiating heat out into the cold universe,” he adds. His team aims to capture that heat and convert it into a useable and reliable energy source.
In more scientific terms, “Solar cells generate an electric current by absorbing photons from a hotter object (i.e. the Sun), whereas thermoradiative diodes generate a current by emitting photons of infrared light into colder surroundings,” explains a companion article by Nature Portfolio. “As long as thermoradiative diodes are warmer than their surroundings, they will emit infrared radiation and generate electricity.”
The research team at UNSW is building on prior research and modeling of thermoradiative diodes developed at Harvard and Stanford universities in the United States. The UNSW team has taken this foundation and run with it, and was the first to successfully use one of the devices to “directly demonstrate electrical power” back in 2022.
The research has continued to advance since then, but is still a long way from being competitive with conventional solar. “So far, the device can generate only a very small amount of electricity — around 100,000 times less than that of a conventional solar panel,” reports CNN.
In the not-so-distant future, these diodes could power small devices overnight, functionally replacing batteries or serving to recharge them.
“Many people leave their WiFi on overnight and charge their phones,” says Ekins-Dauke. “There’s a light electrical load at night, which thermoradiative diodes could help supply in the future.”
But someday, these thermoradiative diode semiconductors could have a much grander application, powering satellites orbiting the earth. These satellites vacillate between light and darkness in relatively quick cycles – about every 45 minutes – and attaching thermoradiative diodes could help to power these devices when they’re out of the reach of sunlight and in the extremely cold temperatures of space.

Brasil asume control de embajada de México en Perú tras ruptura diplomática

Razing Garyton School back on Portage’s wish list
Razing Garyton School is back on the Portage Redevelopment Commission’s list of capital projects to consider this year.
The demolition was listed as a high priority last year but not accomplished after bids came in for the project.
Determining what to do with the property after the building comes down hasn’t been determined.
“We tried over and over” to get someone to buy the building, Planning and Community Development Director Tom Cherry said. “I think I toured that building 20 times.”
Former Mayor Sue Lynch tried, too. “We’ve had countless groups look at that property, but it’s just simply beyond repair,” RDC member Ralph Mundt said.
Redevelopment Director Dan Botich agreed. With the agreement that the building must be razed, the next step is to determine what to do with the site.
“It’s going to be removed and turned into a greenfield and grass. What do you want to happen with this area,” Botich wants to ask Garyton residents. He suggested holding a workshop with the public to gather ideas for repurposing the site.
One option would be to turn it into a public park. That, too, was on the capital improvements plan last year.
The RDC held a workshop after its regular meeting Thursday to review capital improvements planned for this year. At its February meeting, the RDC is expected to prioritize items on the list. High-priority projects are more likely to be completed than low-priority items.
Keeping the low-priority projects on the list both keeps them on the RDC’s radar and prevents the budget from being permanently reduced, Mayor Austin Bonta said.
The RDC’s budget includes $5 million in anticipated revenue from the sale of real estate.
World’s Finest Chocolate has an option to buy that expires on April 19. The property is part of the Sportsplex development that never happened on the site of the former Midwest Steel Supervisors Club. It’s near the city’s marina, with access to Burns Waterway. If the Chicago-based company doesn’t buy it, someone else likely would.
“There’s a lot of interest in the site,” Botich said.
That money can’t be spent until it’s received, though.
Botich is proposing $100,000 for a new façade grants program, $200,000 for landscaping grants and $50,000 for sign grants. Redeveloping the northwest corner of U.S. 20 and Crisman Road is driving the landscaping grant program, he said. That would allow all four corners of the intersection to be done at the same time by the same company, using the same kind of trees.
The commission approved a contract with Abonmarche Development for alternative development options for the Hillcrest area on the city’s northwest side. That 300 to 400 acres would be for multiuse venues, Botich said.
It’s also where city officials have hinted is the approximate area where the Chicago Bears could locate a new stadium if they move the team to Portage.
Streets and Sanitation Superintendent Randy Reeder updated the commission on the compost site near the wastewater treatment plant. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management inspected it and found a pipe protruding from a berm, leaking water where it’s not supposed to go.
Removing that pipe caused a water issue at the compost site, so the city has approached IDEM with engineering plans to review, Reeder said.
Bonta said Reeder suggested holding an event at the compost site to draw more attention to it.
Someone in the city recently remarked that they wished there was a place to get compost for free, Bonta said. There already is, but it’s not well known.
“It’s a very great site. It’s a hidden gem,” Reeder said.
“The leaf rows are eventually turned into compost, and we give that away for free. We even have so much compost we give some to Valpo,” he said.
Botich briefed the RDC on other projects in the works this year, including redoing the Portage Mall parking lot to build a nucleus for a downtown, a kayak launch, relocating a baseball field downtown, retail development on U.S. 6 and potential work on a bridge overpass for Burns Waterway.
“It’s going to be a bigger year than last year for the Portage Redevelopment Commission,” Botich said.

US security agreement for Ukraine is ‘100% ready’ to be signed, Volodymyr Zelenskyy says
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that a U.S. security guarantees document for Ukraine is “100% ready” after two days of talks involving representatives from Ukraine, the U.S. and Russia.
Speaking to journalists in Vilnius during a visit to Lithuania, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is waiting for its partners to set a signing date, after which the document would go to the U.S. Congress and Ukrainian parliament for ratification.
Zelenskyy also emphasized Ukraine’s push for European Union membership by 2027, calling it an “economic security guarantee.”
The Ukrainian leader described the talks in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, as likely the first trilateral format in “quite a long while” that included not only diplomats but military representatives from all three sides. The talks, which began on Friday and continued Saturday, were the latest aiming to end Russia’s nearly four-year full-scale invasion.
Zelenskyy acknowledged fundamental differences between Ukrainian and Russian positions, reaffirming territorial issues as a major sticking point.
“Our position regarding our territory — Ukraine’s territorial integrity — must be respected,” he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a Ukraine settlement with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during marathon talks late Thursday. The Kremlin insisted that to reach a peace deal, Kyiv must withdraw its troops from the areas in the east that Russia illegally annexed but has not fully captured.
Zelenskyy said the U.S. is trying to find a compromise, but that “all sides must be ready for compromise.”
Negotiators will return to the UAE on Feb. 1 for the next round of talks, according to a U.S. official. The recent talks covered a broad range of military and economic matters and included the possibility of a ceasefire before a deal, the official said. There was not yet an agreement on a final framework for oversight and operation of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is occupied by Russia and is the largest in Europe.

About one year ago, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Counterterrorism Division conducted an unclassified briefing warning of an emerging domestic threat vector described as “nihilistic accelerationism.” The briefing was around the time of a series of attacks in which left-wing militants firebombed Tesla vehicles at showrooms. These attacks were largely in response to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s crusade against the federal bureaucracy through DOGE-related initiatives.
By late summer, less than two weeks before Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a left-wing activist, we published an assessment titled “America Has a ‘Transtifa’ Problem.” The report probably stunned most people, and they couldn’t believe their eyes as the accelerating convergence of militant ideology and left-wing activism was beginning to unleash chaos.
Weeks later, we penned another note, titled “Planning War Against Fascists” – Socialist Rifle Association Boasts 10,000 Members… In our opinion, the profiling of these left-wing activists, from the Tesla Takedown fueled by dark-money funded NGOs (permanent protest industrial complex) and the militant left to anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, to the political assassination of Kirk, only suggested to us that left-wing chaos would accelerate into the new year.
The nation has entered a dangerous period, as the turmoil in Minneapolis could be replicated in other sanctuary cities when warmer weather arrives.

The chaos emanating from left-wing activists surprisingly and recently prompted deep state publication The Atlantic to pen a note titled, “Left-Wing Terrorism Is on the Rise.”
Following the chaos on Saturday, in which another activist was shot and killed by federal agents after an altercation, X users are reporting that Minneapolis’s “Antifa General,” AKA Kyle Wagner, has urged his comrades: “Get your f—king guns and stop these f—king people”

Wagner has branded himself on the neck with the gang tattoo of the Antifa “Iron Front” logo, similar to how neo-Nazis brand themselves with fascist symbols.
