Trump Targets Canadian Aircraft With Decertification Threat, 50% Tariff Warning

Trump Targets Canadian Aircraft With Decertification Threat, 50% Tariff Warning

President Trump on Thursday threatened to “decertify” Canadian-made aircraft and slap a 50% tariff on planes sold into the United States, in a potential move that would mark an unprecedented intervention in aviation regulation, given this function is traditionally handled by the Federal Aviation Administration (however, the FAA has yet to issue comment).

In a Truth Social post, Trump linked the threat to Canada’s refusal to certify several Gulfstream business jet models, amid broader growing tensions related to him calling the country America’s “51st state”.

We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, warning that if the dispute is not “immediately corrected,” Washington would impose a “50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America.

But again, the reality remains that no US president has ever directly “decertified” commercial aircraft, but it signifies a further breakdown in Washington-Ottawa relations. The full Trump statement is below:

The same day that Trump made the threat, Prime Minister Mark Carney called for the US to respect Canadian sovereignty, following widespread reports that Alberta separatists had met Trump administration on multiple occasions over the last nine months.

The group, Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), does have a significant following and number of members. They are asking Washington to provide political and monetary support for an “independent” Alberta.

Carney hit back, saying he expects “the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty – I’m always clear with President Trump to that effect”.

At the same time, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she expected American officials to allow discussions about the province’s “democratic process” to remain internal, among Albertans and Canadians. The US shouldn’t meddle, she’s made clear.

But US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently signaled at Davos: “Alberta is a natural partner for the US. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got.

Tribune Editorial Board endorsements for 2026 Illinois primary election

On Saturday, the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board begins its endorsements for the upcoming primaries in Illinois. Our tradition of political endorsements goes back many years and is a cornerstone of this newspaper’s history.

In the primaries, board members endeavor to help both Republican and Democratic Party-affiliated readers make their best choices while also considering broader issues affecting this city, state and nation. It is also notable that many of these races have a large number of talented candidates for office, and thus some of our endorsements will discuss more than one candidate approvingly, noting their appeal to different voters; however, we do plan one endorsement except in the rare cases in which we do not feel we’re able to endorse any candidate on either one or both sides of the ticket.

As the largest newspaper in Illinois, read throughout the Land of Lincoln, we are making endorsements in statewide races both for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Illinois statehouse, as well as in county-specific races involving Cook County. We make our choices carefully and consult a variety of sources.

A corporate edict from Tribune Publishing prevents us from making formal endorsements in the Illinois races for U.S. Senate and the Republican gubernatorial primary. Nonetheless, we plan on offering our frank opinions on the policies and qualifications of those candidates at the conclusion of our process, as we always do.

We’ve been impressed with many candidates and believe Illinoisans will have many excellent choices. And over the next several days, we will do our best to help you make your best choice.

After rough first half, Gigi Dillon responds as TF South rallies for OT win. Her mindset? ‘Get even quickly.’

T.F. South’s Gigi Dillon lives by the words of wisdom that her coaches taught her.

The senior forward pays heed to the advice of “being comfortable with being uncomfortable.” And the Red Wolves were certainly uncomfortable in the first half Thursday night.

“We got punched in the mouth,” Dillon said. “And we responded.”

That response came during a seven-point run that tied the game early in the third quarter.

Dillon delivered with two quick baskets and a steal as the host Red Wolves went on to a 55-51 win in overtime over Hillcrest in a battle of South Suburban Conference Blue unbeatens in Lansing.

“We knew we had to get even quickly and push it forward,” Dillon said.

The 5-foot-11 Dillon led T.F. South (23-2, 9-0) with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven steals, while Brie Hawthorne contributed 10 points, six rebounds and six steals.

Asia Haynes, who had nine points and five rebounds, converted two free throws with less than a second left in the fourth quarter to send the game into OT. Sharmaine Averhart added nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Afterward, the home fans stormed the court to celebrate the thrilling win, the Red Wolves’ 10th in a row. It came on a night where Dillon showed a variety of skills, which is nothing new to those who have been watching her four-year career.

“She brings us a lot,” Haynes said of Dillon. “She brings energy and aggressiveness.”

Angel Taylor did the same for Hillcrest (21-6, 7-1), having a monster game with 18 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots. Treazure Coleman scored 10 points and Davia Cobb added nine, including a basket with five seconds left in regulation to give the Hawks a late lead.

Hillcrest had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

T.F. coach Eric Bryce, meanwhile, was pleased with Dillon’s performance.

“She’s everything,” Bryce said of Dillon. “Her experience and her calmness — she doesn’t get flustered by stuff — is big. She jammed her finger at the end and said, ‘Don’t take me out.’

“That’s just the kind of stuff that you need. In this game, she brought the calmness and the steadiness we needed.”

While Dillon takes comfort in being uncomfortable, that wasn’t always the case. T.F. North assistant boys coach Jason Warren, Dillon’s cousin, introduced her to the sport when she was 11.

It didn’t start well.

“I didn’t like it right away,” Dillon said. “A lot of people on the team I was on were better than me. I felt discouraged but they way my teammates pushed me … I’m still friends with them to this day.

“I started to get comfortable with basketball my freshman year.”

Dillon is pretty comfortable with this season’s team, which has its eyes on breaking the program record of 27 wins from her freshman year.

“With the chemistry that we have, if you are not having a good night, your teammates are having a good night,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. Anyone can get a bucket on this team.”

Dillon confirmed that she’s still mulling over junior college and small college offers. She hopes to make a decision soon. At the same time, she keeps building up her high school resume.

She’s the program’s all-time leader with 107 games played and 83 wins, according to Bryce. She’s also approaching the 1,000 milestone in two categories with 982 points and 943 rebounds.

Dillon pointed out that rebounding, to her, is more fun than scoring.

“You can score and it does feel good,” she said. “But there is something about getting a rebound to seal a game, and there is something about fighting and getting the rebound.

“It’s like, ‘I got it over you.’”

Minnesota Vikings fire GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah — who received a contract extension last year

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings fired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah on Friday after mixed results over four seasons and after giving him a contract extension last year.

The Vikings announced they have appointed executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski as the interim replacement through the NFL draft, after which a search will be conducted for a new GM.

The timing of the decision was unusual nearly four weeks after the regular season ended, but Vikings owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf said in a joint statement that they came to the conclusion after their annual end-of-season organizational meetings. The Vikings finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs for a second time in Adofo-Mensah’s four years. They didn’t win a postseason game in his tenure.

“After careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the team to move forward with new leadership of our football operations. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for Kwesi’s contributions and commitment to the organization over the past four years and wish him and his family the best in the future,” the Wilfs said.

Brzezinski has been a key executive in the front office since 1999, becoming one of the league’s most respected salary-cap managers.

“Rob brings tremendous credibility and experience, understands our roster and has the ability to build consensus and rely on the expertise of our personnel and coaches,” the Wilfs said.

President Donald Trump announces an IndyCar race through Washington’s streets — including Pennsylvania Avenue

WASHINGTON — The streets of the nation’s capital will host an IndyCar race this summer as part of celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday, President Donald Trump announced Friday, relishing the prospect of vehicles roaring past the White House at speeds approaching 200 mph.

Trump signed an executive order establishing the race on Aug. 23 alongside Roger Penske, owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar and teams in multiple racing series, including NASCAR.

“It’s going to be so exciting,” Trump said. “I love the racing. I don’t have a lot of time to watch it, but I love the racing.”

Penske suggested there was “no better way for us to bring automotive and speed into the D.C. area and to be able to have the opportunity to compete here with our IndyCars.”

A news release from IndyCar said the route would include the National Mall, and the executive order gives the Departments of Transportation and the Interior two weeks to designate a route through Washington “that is suitable for conducting an IndyCar street race and that will showcase the majesty of our capital city in celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.”

The order also directs city and other officials to work closely with race organizers.

The event continues Trump’s embrace of sports during his second term: Most of his domestic travel has been built around attending major games and events — including the recent college football national championship game in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The president also has been personally involved in promoting a UFC fight to help mark America’s 250th anniversary, which he has said is set for June 14 on the White House grounds — a date that happens to be his 80th birthday.

But Trump isn’t planning to attend the upcoming Super Bowl on Feb. 8 between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots in Santa Clara, California, suggesting it’s too far to travel.

In IndyCar’s case, the race is set to come to him.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who also attended Friday’s signing ceremony in the Oval Office, gushed: “To think, 190 miles an hour down Pennsylvania Avenue. This is going to be wild.”

Trump said he urged organizers to pick the best race route through Washington’s streets — even if they were more complicated logistically.

“I said, pick the best site. It’s very important,” the president said. “Even if it’s more difficult to get, to get approved, pick the absolute best site.”

Organizers said they’d long lobbied members of Congress to authorize a road race in Washington but had been previously unsuccessful. Duffy asked when the last road race in the capital occurred and was told it was in 1801 and involved horses during the administration of President Thomas Jefferson — prompting Trump to reply, “That’s something.”

“Now we’re going to do a real race,” said Duffy, who said the event would be free for the public, declaring: “Freedom, America, speed and road racing. It doesn’t get more American than that.”

Iran Unveils More Deep Underground Missile Tunnels, Warns Can Close Strait of Hormuz

Iran Unveils More Deep Underground Missile Tunnels, Warns Can Close Strait of Hormuz

Via The Cradle

Tehran has unveiled a network of “underwater missile tunnels” and has warned that the Strait of Hormuz will “not be safe” if the Islamic Republic is attacked by the US, Iranian state television reported.

Footage aired on Iranian state television showed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri inside the submarine missile facilities, displaying rows of cruise missiles reportedly capable of striking targets over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) away with smart guidance systems.

“Our capabilities are constantly developing,” Tangsiri said, adding that Iranian forces were ready to deal with any threat “at any level and in any geography.”

Earlier this week, the political deputy of the IRGC Navy, Mohammed Akbarzadeh, warned that Tehran could disrupt international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran refrained from imposing a blockade on the strait during the 12-day US-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic in June, but has repeatedly warned it could be an option in any upcoming attack on the country.

Akbarzadeh said Iran receives real-time intelligence “from the sky, the surface and under the water of the Strait.” Approximately 37 percent of global oil traffic passes through the Strait of Hormuz on a daily basis.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is meanwhile in Turkiye on Friday for talks to prevent a US attack and subsequent regional escalation. Tehran has warned Gulf states and Ankara that while it does not want war, it will target US bases across the region if it is attacked.

Washington’s aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, has arrived in West Asia with several accompanying warships. Washington has also deployed additional fighter jet squadrons to the region.

Trump said earlier this week that a “beautiful armada” is headed toward Iran, calling on the Islamic Republic to capitulate to US terms and come to the negotiating table. Washington demands that Tehran destroy its enriched uranium, limit its missile program, and halt support for resistance groups in the region.

#Iran issued a warning to ships at sea Thursday that it planned to run a drill next week that would include live firing in the Strait of Hormuz, potentially disrupting traffic through a waterway that sees 20% of all the world’s oil pass through it. – @AP

— Jon Gambrell | جون (@jongambrellAP) January 29, 2026

“Our brave Armed Forces are prepared – with their fingers on the trigger – to immediately and powerfully respond to ANY aggression against our beloved land, air, and sea. The valuable lessons learned from the 12-Day War have enabled us to respond even more strongly, rapidly, and profoundly,” Araghchi stated on Wednesday.

Iran’s UN mission also said this week that Tehran is prepared to respond “like never before” if the country comes under attack.

Watch: Jennings Destroys Dems For Refusing To Condemn DA’s Vow To “Hunt Down Nazi” ICE Agents

Watch: Jennings Destroys Dems For Refusing To Condemn DA’s Vow To “Hunt Down Nazi” ICE Agents

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news,

CNN contributor Scott Jennings unloaded on Democrats during a heated panel discussion, exposing their failure to denounce Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s inflammatory threats against federal ICE agents enforcing immigration laws.

Jennings highlighted how such rhetoric from left-wing officials undermines law enforcement and fuels division, especially as the Trump administration ramps up deportations of criminal illegal immigrants.

“Yeah, this is highly inappropriate. No prosecutor in America should be doing that, let alone yelling at and about law enforcement officers,” Jennings urged.

? BREAKING: Scott Jennings just DROPPED THE MIC on every Democrat in America

“The fact that Democrats cannot, in unison, condemn a loony tunes prosecutor for vowing to ‘HUNT DOWN’ ICE agents like ‘Nazis’ is beyond chilling!”

“Yeah, this is highly inappropriate. No prosecutor… pic.twitter.com/cRoDA6PibL

— Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) January 29, 2026

He laid out the core issue plainly: “Look, this debate, a lot of words and a lot of talking around it. We have existing federal immigration law. We have law enforcement agencies, duly sworn officers that have been ordered by the president to go out and enforce those laws. That’s really all the debate is about here.”

Jennings pointed to successful enforcement elsewhere: “And in most jurisdictions, these laws are being enforced quite amicably. There are no incidents. Transfers are happening.”

“People are being deported that have a reason to be deported. It’s just in this specific jurisdiction, people have decided that federal immigration law shouldn’t apply!” he added.

He then escalated his critique to the broader pattern among Democrats: “And now you have sort of radical Democrats around the country ramping this up even further by claiming that they’re going to ‘hunt down’ federal law enforcement officers as though they were Nazis.”

Jennings called out Rep. Eric Swalwell specifically: “You have Eric Swalwell in California promising a reign of terror if he becomes governor against anybody who’s ever worked for ICE!”

“I mean, this kind of division and this kind of threat against people who basically signed up to enforce the law and do public service, it’s outrageous. And any Democrat ought to be able to sit here and say this is way over the line!” Jennings concluded.

The outburst came in response to Krasner’s recent vows during a City Hall event in Philadelphia, where he joined city councilmembers to unveil the “ICE OUT” legislation package.

The bills aim to bar ICE agents from city-owned property, restrict agency cooperation and data sharing, and limit access to public facilities like libraries, shelters, and health centers without a judicial warrant.

Krasner labeled ICE agents as “a small bunch of wannabe Nazis” and threatened, “If we have to hunt you down the way they hunted down Nazis for decades, we will find your identities. We will find you. We will achieve justice.”

Backlash has been swift. Pennsylvania State Sen. Jarrett Coleman dismissed the comments as “empty threats,” emphasizing that local officials cannot interfere with federal law enforcement.

House Minority Leader Jesse Topper called them “not just hypocritical [but] outright laughable,” urging focus on community security instead.

The White House noted a 1,300% surge in assaults on ICE officers, blaming “dangerous, untrue smears by elected Democrats” and praising agents for “act[ing] heroically to enforce the law and protect American communities.”

This rhetoric from Krasner fits into a larger pattern of incitement from Democrat-led cities against federal immigration enforcement.

As we highlighted earlier, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson admitted to coordinating with other Democrat mayors, including Minneapolis’ Jacob Frey and Boston’s Michelle Wu, to impede ICE operations.

Johnson has even established “ICE-Free Zones” prohibiting agents from city properties without warrants and is pushing measures to hold them accountable for alleged misconduct.

Tucker Carlson accused Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Frey of deliberately fueling chaos to spark a “color revolution” and civil war by refusing to protect citizens and allowing riots.

Carlson warned that such actions lead to states rejecting federal authority, resulting in “warring nations within the same borders” and “killing at scale.”

These escalating threats from radical Democrats not only endanger federal agents doing their jobs but also erode the rule of law that protects American communities from criminal elements.

With polls showing a majority of Americans supporting mass deportations, this resistance looks increasingly out of touch and dangerous.

Enforcing immigration laws isn’t optional—it’s essential to putting America First and restoring order after years of open-border chaos.
