The US Might Make The Sahelian Alliance An Offer That It Can’t Refuse

The US Might Make The Sahelian Alliance An Offer That It Can’t Refuse

Authored by Andrews Korybko,

Its members might be told by the Bureau of African Affairs’ chief to let the US replace or at least “balance” Russia’s role as their top security partner under implied pain of US-backed Nigerian military pressure on anti-terrorist pretexts, French-backed terrorist advances, and/or US anti-terrorist strikes.

The US’ Bureau of African Affairs announced over the weekend that its chief will travel to Bamako “to convey the United States’ respect for Mali’s sovereignty and desire to chart a new course in the bilateral relationship and move past policy missteps.”

They added that “The United States looks forward to discussing next steps for enhancing U.S.-Mali cooperation and consulting with other governments in the region, including Burkina Faso and Niger, on shared security and economic interests.”

The rapidly evolving geostrategic context is very relevant.

It follows the US bombing ISIS in Nigeria on Christmas, which was assessed here as possibly signaling the start of a more robust anti-terrorist partnership that could eventually serve as the pretext for the US-backed Nigerian destabilization of the Sahelian Alliance (AES per its French acronym) on such pretexts.

The AES comprises neighboring Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, the latter of which experienced the first patriotic military coup in the region.

The bloc is also transforming into a confederation and is militarily allied with Russia, which aids them with their “Democratic Security” tasks of ensuring political stability and countering terrorist threats.

On that topic, reported coup attempts aren’t uncommon (especially in Burkina Faso) and terrorists have been advancing since the AES expelled France, which they accuse of being behind all of this as revenge. France’s strategic setbacks in the Sahel over the past few years damaged its image as a Great Power.

If the US can get the AES to let it to replace or at least “balance” Russia’s role as their top security partner, which forms the basis of their strategic ties that have evolved in socio-cultural, mining, energy, and other directions, then the US could damage Russia’s image as a Great Power too. Since the special operation began, Russia has experienced its own strategic setbacks in Armenia-Azerbaijan and to a lesser extent KazakhstanVenezuela, and Syria, which the US has an interest in replicating in the AES.

This could be achieved the “easy way” by those countries voluntarily complying with the US’ abovementioned speculative demand, with the deal perhaps sweetened by large-scale aid and/or reduced tariffs for accessing to the US market, or the “hard way” through indirect military coercion. The second approach could be advanced through a combination of US-backed Nigerian military pressure on anti-terrorist pretexts, French-backed terrorist advances, and/or US anti-terrorist strikes.

About the last possibility, its bombing of ISIS in Nigeria set a precedent that could justify doing the same in the AES, albeit without their approval unlike that which Abuja gave Washington. The US is also reportedly considering deploying spy planes in the Ivory Coast, which borders Mali and Burkina Faso, for facilitating cross-border anti-terrorist operations. Armed drones could foreseeably accompany them if the decision is made. All of this might coerce the AES into agreeing to the US’ speculative demand.

It can therefore be assessed that Trump 2.0’s attempted diplomatic re-engagement with the AES is almost certainly meant to make them an offer that they can’t refuse. All three of its members are already struggling to stem terrorist advances despite Russia’s help, which is understandably prioritizing the special operation, and it’s unclear what they’d do if they lost more ground while coming under more pressure from US-backed Nigeria, US-backed France, and/or the US itself. It’d be very hard to still refuse.

Russia is the most trustworthy partner that they could have since it has enough resource wealth to not need any other country’s, unlike France and the US, but its military’s hands are tied due to the special operation so it can’t rush to their rescue like the USSR saved Ethiopia from Somalia in the late 1970s. France and the US keenly understand that, which is why the first has been backing terrorist groups against the AES while the second is now likely preparing to make them an offer that they can’t refuse.

The best-case scenario is that the AES’ armed forces achieve a breakthrough in their members’ respective but nevertheless interconnected anti-terrorist campaigns with Russia’s help, which thwarts what are arguably France’s, Nigeria’s, and their shared US patron’s plans. That can’t be taken for granted due to how difficult everything has become for them in recent years as proven by their recent setbacks, however, so the worst-case scenarios of them capitulating to the US or collapsing can’t be ruled out.

Down to Business: Want to customize to your bike? Win Racing in Naperville can do that

Business: Win Racing

Address: 10S187 Schoger Drive, Naperville

Phone: 630-978-8856

Owner: Brian Westphal, 62, of Bolingbrook

Years in business: 25

What does your business do? “Custom motorcycles. Add a turbo on that one, on this one. I also do repairs,” Westphal said.

What does a turbo do? “The turbo brings in more air to the engine. You’re using more fuel. Boosts up the horsepower. Makes the bike go faster.”

How fast? “Some of the customers can go 200 mph. One of the customers hit 240, 250. They do this at salt flats, special events at airports on the runways. There’s some in Indiana.”

What about the motorcycles we hear of topping 100 mph on highways? “There are idiots everywhere. Back in the day, street racing was super popular. They actually had a course near here, just before the railroad tracks. There was a little quarter-mile setup there. … But these bikes you can’t run out there. There’s too much power for the street so most of the guys go to the tracks.”

These are some of the motorcycle racing trophies won by Brian Westphal. His racing days are behind him, he says, but he’s still busy repairing and customizing motorcycles at his business, Win Racing in Naperville. (Steve Metsch/Naperville Sun)

Why did you start this business? “I started out of the house. … I used to road race a long time ago, back in the ’80s and early ’90s. I raced on tracks. Daytona. Elkhart Lake. Ohio. Used to travel around. Then we had kids. It’s just harder and it’s not inexpensive. … Racing is fun.”

What happens when someone comes in? “Generally, most everybody is familiar with it. You don’t get anybody brand new who wants something like this. They’ll want an exhaust system put on it, get it tuned, get a little more horsepower. Make it run better. Then, over time, if they get into the speed part of it, (they’ll say) ‘I need more power.’

“They’ll start with a basic bike and make it a little bit better. They’ll go out have fun and get comfortable with it. Then they’ll want another small thing and another small thing. Most people build up over time.”

What is your favorite? “If it was a street bike it would probably be a Ducati Panigale.

“I’m not too much of a Harley fan. For the most part, people who get the import bikes want to ride. People who get the Harleys, they get the girls. It’s like a truck and a Ferrari. The truck may cost as much as a Ferrari but nobody is looking at the truck. Import bikes and Harleys are the same way. You can have 15 imports, one Harley guy comes by, everybody is looking at the Harley.”

What about pricing? “You can spend $10,000 to $20,000 on a bike and make it 400 horsepower. Or you can spend that same money on a 600 cc bike and make it 220 horsepower. To me, it doesn’t make financial sense.”

What’s your business philosophy? “I always tell people I like making money not taking money. But I’m only going to say ‘no’ so much. If you want that and you fully understand moneywise. … Why do people do any of the things they do? A bike might have sentimental value to them. Or they want something different from what other people have.”

Motorcycles that have been repaired or renovated by Bryan Westphal are stored at his business, Win Racing in Naperville. Sometimes owners will wait until spring to pick up their bikes because winter’s icy roads can be dangerous, he said. (Steve Metsch/Naperville Sun)

Can drive turbo bikes on city streets? “You can and you can’t. It depends on what mood the police are in that day. You can have an import bike with an open exhaust and it can be obnoxiously loud. And they’ll pull you over every block. You can have a Harley that’s twice as loud and (the police) let them keep riding. … Turbo bikes, they’re really not that loud if you’re just riding around. The full-on drag bikes? You can’t. We don’t have a radiator on them. They’re so low to the ground, on some streets they’ll bottom out.”

More men or women customers? “Ninety-eight percent men.”

Did you ride a mini bike as a kid? “No. My dad had bikes. My mom had a bike. I got a bike when I was 19. I got a KZ 1000R. … That thing was a blast.”

Is this a good location for business? “I can use more (space) but I can manage what I have. A lot of times, when I have space, all of a sudden I get a ton more bikes.”

Are you the only employee? “Yes. I’ve tried working with others. I just don’t have the patience. … I’ll turn away work I don’t like. A ratty looking bike.”

What’s your advice for someone starting a business? “Know and believe in what you’re doing and the rest will work itself out. … There’s always issues and problems that come up. But as long as you know what you are doing, you’ll be fine.”

Chicago Bears hire Eric Studesville as running backs coach for his 2nd stint with the team

Ben Johnson is still working to hire an offensive coordinator to replace Declan Doyle, but the Chicago Bears have a new running backs coach.

Eric Studesville is back for a second stint with the Bears, two league sources told the Tribune on Wednesday night. He was hired to replace Eric Bieniemy, who departed to become the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Studesville, 58, originally joined the Bears as a quality control assistant in 1997 on Dave Wannstedt’s staff and spent four seasons with the club working with wide receivers and on special teams. The Madison, Wis., native then left for the New York Giants as a running backs coach and was with the Miami Dolphins for the last nine seasons, overlapping there for two years with Johnson.

NFL coaching and GM tracker: Giants to hire ex-Bears coach Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator

Studesville spent seven seasons with the Denver Broncos and served as the interim head coach for them during 2010 after Josh McDaniels was fired. He was a coach for the Broncos’ Super Bowl L team. In Miami, Studesville was the running backs coach but also had an array of other titles including running game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator and associate head coach.

The Bears ranked third in the NFL in rushing this past season with Bieniemy working with D’Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai. Swift rushed for a career-high 1,087 yards and nine touchdowns and Monangai had 783 yards, giving the Bears two backs with 700 yards or more for the first time since Walter Payton and Roland Harper accomplished the feat in 1978.

Marshawn Lynch, Willis McGahee, C.J. Anderson and Raheem Mostert all had Pro Bowl seasons playing for Studesville. Twelve running backs have had 1,000-yard seasons playing for Studesville — McGahee (three times), Tiki Barber (twice), Lynch (twice), Knowshon Moreno (once), Fred Jackson (once), Anderson (once), Mostert (once) and De’Von Achane (once).

Johnson is working to hire a replacement for Doyle, 29, who left to call plays for the Baltimore Ravens. Passing game coordinator Press Taylor is believed to be a candidate, and Johnson could consider assistant head coach/receivers coach Antwaan Randle El as well as quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett. NFL Media reported the Bears requested to interview Connor Senger, who was an assistant last season for the Arizona Cardinals.

Who does what in the Chicago Bears organization? Here’s a breakdown.

Vance To Lead Sweeping Anti-Fraud Task Force Investigating California

Vance To Lead Sweeping Anti-Fraud Task Force Investigating California

Vice President JD Vance is poised to chair a new White House task force aimed at rooting out potential fraud and abuse in government programs in California, according to CBS News.

Andrew Ferguson, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, is expected to serve as the task force’s vice chairman and handle day-to-day operations, CBS News reports. President Donald Trump is anticipated to issue an executive order in the coming days to formally establish the group, the news outlet said.

The White House task force would operate separately from a related Justice Department effort led by Colin McDonald, a Trump nominee for a new fraud-investigation role at the department. McDonald is expected to also probe fraud in Minnesota uncovered by YouTuber Nick Shirley and other independent journalists.

California has long grappled with documented issues of waste, fraud, and weak oversight in state and federally funded programs. State auditors have for more than a decade flagged problems including persistent cost overruns, inadequate internal controls, and unimplemented reform recommendations across various initiatives, CBS News reported last month.

California’s Employment Development Department faced acute criticism during the pandemic, when unemployment-insurance fraud resulted in an estimated $20 billion or more in improper payments, while many eligible claimants endured lengthy delays in receiving benefits, according to NPR News.

Separately, federal officials have recently scrutinized fraud risks in hospice and home-health services, particularly in Los Angeles County. Last week, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz visited the area to draw attention to the issue, citing the rapid proliferation of hospice providers and potential billions in improper billings.

One physician in California reportedly billed the government $120 million in a single year while claiming oversight of 1,900 patients -an volume that has raised questions about feasibility and potential abuse.

The county is home to nearly 2,000 licensed hospice agencies, a number exceeding the combined total in more than 36 states and roughly 30 times the count in states such as Florida or New York.
“Hospice is crazy here,” Dr. Oz said. “You’ve got hospice that’s grown seven-fold in the last five years. They represent about three and a half billion dollars of fraud, we believe, just in LA County.”

Top NHL prospect and Penn State freshman Gavin McKenna charged with felony assault

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna, a freshman center and the presumptive top pick in this summer’s NHL draft, has been charged with felony assault following an incident on Jan. 31.

McKenna, 18, was also charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct, according to court documents. He was awaiting a preliminary hearing as of Wednesday.

Details of the allegations against McKenna were not immediately available. His representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press.

The incident happened in the hours after Penn State lost to No. 2 Michigan State in an outdoor game at Beaver Stadium, home of the Nittany Lions football team.

McKenna, who is from Whitehorse, Yukon, has 11 goals and 21 assists in 24 games this season for the Nittany Lions. He decided to play for Penn State after the NCAA lifted its ban on Canadian Hockey League players competing at the Division I level.

A name, image and likeness deal with the Nittany Lions helped sway McKenna to join a program that has been at the Division I level for less than 15 years.

McKenna recently had four goals and six assists at the World Junior Championships while helping Canada to a bronze medal.

Elgin News Digest: Azaria cancels EZ Street Band concert at Hemmens; ‘Cocoa Crawl’ to be held Saturday in East Dundee

Azaria cancels EZ Street Band concert at Hemmens

The Hank Azaria & The EZ Street Band concert scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin has been canceled.

Azaria’s publicist Seth Cohen said in an email Wednesday that the cancellation was due to an unexpected scheduling conflict.

An Emmy Award-winning actor, Azaria voices several characters on “The Simpsons,” including Police Chief Wiggum, barkeep Mo Szylak and snobby nerd Comic Book Guy on “The Simpsons,” and has appeared in such television shows as “Brockmire,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ray Donovan,” and “Friends” and movies that include “The Birdcage,” “Godzilla” and “Night at the Museum.”

Azaria has said his EZ Street shows are theatrical performances where he stays in character as Bruce Springsteen, singing Springsteen’s songs but telling stories about himself.

Hemmens programming director Anthony Lentino said anyone who has purchased tickets should call 847-931-5900 for details about getting a refund.
