CPS to transfer students out of ASPIRA charter network amid financial turmoil
Chicago Public Schools will begin transferring about 540 students from two high schools in the ASPIRA charter network, as the campuses confront deep financial turmoil and a possible midyear closure.
The charter network is facing a $4.8 million deficit and, according to CPS and ASPIRA officials, may be unable to meet payroll through the end of the year.
In a letter to the ASPIRA board Wednesday night, district officials said they are “moving forward with a student transition process as oversight,” citing the operator’s “failure to demonstrate financial sustainability, which places the education of ASPIRA’s students at risk.”
There is no precedent for a midyear closure for CPS. ASPIRA operates two high schools on the Northwest Side — ASPIRA Business & Finance High School and ASPIRA Early College High School. Both are predominantly low-income and Latino.
But despite its financial woes, the network told CPS in a letter earlier this week that it does not plan to initiate self-closure, and its “priority remains maintaining continuity of instruction.” ASPIRA officials said they are pursuing a short-term loan and fundraising campaigns to stay afloat.
Charters receive funding based on enrollment, and are overseen and authorized to operate by CPS. However, they act as separate nonprofits with independent boards that oversee day-to-day operations.
Since November, the district has provided $2.55 million in advances to ASPIRA to make payroll. But on April 10, CPS will reach a state-mandated funding cap, which limits how much can be allocated to the network based on enrollment, according to the district’s letter. That means ASPIRA’s campuses can no longer rely on the district for financial support.
ASPIRA has also not provided the required financial documentation to CPS, including the network’s fiscal year 2025 audit, payroll records and monthly cash flow statements, the district said.
The operator has yet to identify a “verifiable, secured third-party funding sufficient to eliminate the projected deficit,” according to the district’s letter.
“General assurances, anticipated funding, or contingent commitments do not meet the standard required to demonstrate financial solvency,” wrote Zabrina Evans, executive director of the district’s Office of Innovation & Incubation.
Addressing the Board of Education Thursday, ASPIRA CEO Edgar Lopez said structural underfunding from CPS is to blame for ASPIRA’s troubles. He noted that the network is finalizing its financial documents.
“They can look at the finances all they want, they’re not going to find nothing that’s irregular,” Lopez said. “We’ve had clean audits for a number of years.”
Outside of the district’s downtown offices Thursday, ASPIRA students and staff called on CPS to provide more clarity on the transfer process. The network’s 62 unionized staff members — including teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors and social workers — are represented by Chicago Teachers Union.
CTU Vice President Jackson Potter urged the district to designate welcoming schools for displaced students and staff, expressing concerns that students may drop out or lose credits.
Typically, to transfer midyear, families must contact the school of their choice individually.
“This is unacceptable,” Potter said. “We need emergency planning now, so in mid-March these children, these families, aren’t left without a lifeline.”
Before school in Avondale, students and staff marched outside of ASPIRA Business & Finance High School, protesting the campus’ possible closure. Passing cars on Milwaukee Avenue honked horns as the students raised cardboard signs.
Junior Estefani Martin, 17, has discussed transferring with her parents. But she’s conflicted: what if her credits don’t transfer? In classrooms at ASPIRA Early College, students feel tense, she said, and it’s difficult to focus.
“It feels weird, because I’m like, why am I learning right now?” said Martin.
Eighteen-year-old Angelica Mota, a senior at Aspira Business & Finance, said that students are in “a state of panic.” But she still hopes the charter can find a way to finish the year.
“Closing a Hispanic school right now is devastating for our community,” Mota said. “Please don’t leave us without a place to go.”
ASPIRA’s financial crisis is the latest within Chicago’s charter sector. In November, the district allocated $1.4 million to keep EPIC Academy in South Chicago open through the school year. In 2024, after months of outcry, the Board of Education voted to absorb five of seven schools in the Acero network slated for closure — costing CPS at least $30 million this fiscal year.
The Chicago High School for the Arts in Humboldt Park is also transitioning to a district-run magnet school, after its operator announced that it would not renew its contract amid financial woes.
Roughly 1 in 5 CPS students attends a charter school, or about 55,000 students.

“You’re Not Alone”: Reporters Comfort Those Triggered And Traumatized By Scenes Of Patriotism
This week, most Americans found a moment of rare unity in our pride over the performance of our athletes in the Winter Olympics.
After years of rage politics, there was a brief respite as we joined in cheering our team in representing the United States in Milan and Cortina.
Well, most of us. Some in the media found the entire demonstration of patriotism to be intolerable and triggering.
What is striking is how this aversion to our flag and country was so openly expressed in major media.
This week, the nightmare continued for some on the left who were traumatized by seeing the American flag and open displays of patriotism.
Jack Hughes, one of the heroes of the gold medal hockey game, returned to New Jersey to play and was met with cheers of “USA, USA” and a sea of American flags. Hughes immediately called his Olympic teammate Tage Thompson of the visiting Buffalo Sabres to the ice to join him. The two skated arm in arm as the crowd celebrated them and our country.
It was another unifying moment for the country. The fans joined arm in arm to relish this moment for the nation.
These scenes are clearly having a different impact on some on the left.
The HuffPost even published an article with therapeutic advice for liberals triggered by seeing so many American flags. The liberal publication ran an article titled “There’s a Name for the Discomfort You’re Feeling Watching the Olympics Right Now.” It then published it a second time before the gold-medal hockey game with Canada — presumably to prepare its readers for the nightmare of the United States actually winning.
The subheading read, “If waving the American flag or chanting ‘USA!’ turns you off right now, you’re not alone.”
Senior writer Monica Torres began the article with this line: “While President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda separates families, and federal agents detain 5-year-olds and kill unarmed civilians, American athletes are winning medals on behalf of the nation at the Olympics right now.”
Torres goes on to interview three therapists for this “story” about how the celebration of the United States team has forced many liberals into therapy over their trauma and “the cognitive dissonance of rooting for U.S. sports.”
Los Angeles-based licensed clinical social worker Aimee Monterrosa explained that the “atrocities” of the United States can trigger feelings of guilt, despair, shame, anger” in seeing the country celebrate these sports victories.
Expert Lauren Appio echoed how “waving the American flag or chanting, ‘USA!’ [can make] us feel grossed out or ashamed.”
Over at Vox, Senior correspondent (and former Atlantic writer) Alex Abad-Santos wrote an article on the winners and losers of the Olympics. The column perfectly summed up the pathological opposition of some to this country’s symbols and celebrations.
Abad-Santos declared the men’s hockey team one of the biggest “losers” of the games. He blamed that team for alienating citizens by their patriotic statements: “The conversation surrounding the win quickly shifted into how the team celebrated and who it celebrated with.” He expressed outrage over the team accepting the celebratory call from the President of the United States.
In the meantime, the “winner,” according to Abad-Santos, was . . . wait for it . . . Eileen Gu, the American who reportedly took millions from the repressive Chinese regime to ski for China.
Gu used the games to criticize the United States while saying nothing of how China arrests anyone who speaks out against that country.
Abad-Santos gushes:
“Gu symbolizes the reality that athletes don’t need the US’s backing or support to be commercially successful. That makes some Americans like Vance uneasy. She also embodies the very American idea of relentlessly pursuing success and maximizing it, no matter what it takes. Gu represents the American dream and the startling concept that America isn’t necessary for it.”
The last line is particularly telling. Abad-Santos is celebrating the idea that you can live the American dream without America.
Others joined in lionizing Gu. Charlotte Harpur, writing for The New York Times’ (NYT) The Athletic, virtually declared her a new deity: “You would be forgiven if you thought Gu was a quasi-human robot expertly created by artificial intelligence, so eloquent are her responses to the media.”
The next day, the Times then slammed Men’s Hockey Team in an article titled “The U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team won gold — and then lost the room.” The Athletic‘s Jerry Brewer acknowledged that speaking with the U.S. president after such a win is “an obligatory celebration.” However, he declared that these are not “normal times”: “This isn’t a neutral climate. This isn’t a neutral president. And in a nation this polarized, the proximity carries weight whether the players are being intentional or merely naive.”
These columns on sites like HuffPost and Vox stripped away the pretense of past pieces and laid bare the antagonism for the United States by some on the left. The open celebration of the country was too much for many rage addicts today.
Fortunately, these writers are largely writing for each other. The public long ago left these sites. They now write for a minority of Americans who are triggered by the appearance of American flags or traumatized by expressions of patriotism.
What these writers find repulsive is rousing for the rest of us. Watching Hughes and Thompson skate together last night was everything that is great about this country, as those Jersey fans went wild. Hughes said that he was struggling not to get emotional at that moment. He was not alone.

Indian Prairie D204 student heading to Scripps National Spelling Bee for second time
When Shruthi Ayyagari was about 10 or 11 years old, she asked her mother for a dictionary.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, I really want to familiarize myself more with spelling and English and language,” Shruthi said.
The Indian Prairie School District 204 eighth-grader attributes that first dictionary, which included a thesaurus and vocabulary builder, to spurring her interest in spelling but it was not until she watched the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee that she started taking the skill more seriously.
“It was like second nature to them,” Shruthi said of the competitive spellers. “I wanted to be more like the winner, and I wanted to see how far I could get.”
The 14-year-old Francis Granger Middle School student will find out May 27 when she heads to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., for the second consecutive year.
She secured her slot at the 2026 DuPage County Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 19, where her correct spelling of the word “telegnosis” (perception or knowledge at a distance) gave her a first-place win in the regional competition.

Every year, hundreds of the best spellers from across the country and the globe, all of whom are in eighth grade or younger, compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
“It still kind of hasn’t registered to me that I’m going to Scripps for the second year in a row,” Shruthi said. “I feel very proud of myself that I’m going to Scripps but I also feel nervous to attend and spell there in front of hundreds of people.”
Last year’s competition — the 100th year Scripps hosted the contest — featured 243 participants facing off against each other at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Spellers traveled from as far as Ghana, Nigeria and Kuwait to spell words like “tirak” (a physiological disease of Indian cotton), “tekke” (a dervish monastery) and “éclaircissement” (a clearing up of something obscure — last year’s winning word).
When Shruthi qualified for Scripps last year, she said she couldn’t believe it.
“At first, it was very surreal,” she said. “I hadn’t gotten out of that mindset that I was still a little speller who doesn’t know anything about spelling.”
One of her favorite parts about attending was meeting so many different contestants.
“It was so cool seeing all of these spellers from all of these different walks of life and how they studied and what was so impressive about them,” she said. “(One reason) why Scripps was always so cool to me was that every speller had worked equally as hard as I had to come to this particular point.”
Shruthi tied for 89th place, losing in fourth round of the competition. Although she had successfully spelled the word “sravaka” (a direct disciple of the Buddha) and gave the correct definition of the word “anserine” (something resembling a goose), it was the word “coolth” (the state or occasion of being cool) that led to her elimination. She misspelled it as “coulth.”
“I was very nervous on stage, but it’s kind of like the opposite of warmth,” Shruthi said, recounting the moment she realized made a mistake. “I didn’t quite make that connection in my head when I got that root though.”
Regardless, she said she was happy with her placement and this year expects to place higher.
“I’m aiming for finals this year, and I think that’s achievable,” Shruthi said.
The Aurora resident participated in her first bee when she was in sixth grade.
“It was super nerve-wracking to compete in my first spelling bee but as I got the hang of it more, it started to become easier and now I am way more well-versed in the art of spelling,” she said.
Even studying for her first spelling bee was something she said she greatly underestimated.
“I thought that if I had just kind of skimmed through the study list, or asked my friends to quiz me a couple times, I would be good,” Shruthi said. “But turns out, there’s actually so much more nuance than just knowing the words. It’s like you have to be familiar with every single aspect of the word and what makes the word spelled the way it is.”
That includes being familiar with the language the word comes from “because certain languages follow different rules from spelling” and have “different ways of representing the same sound,” she said.
“The very first word that I ever messed up on in a spelling bee was craquelure,” Ayyagari said. “I was unfamiliar with it at the time because I was very scared of words from French. And since then, I’ve become a lot more familiar with words from French and it was also like an art thing, and I was not very well-versed in words from the art world.”
Shruthi has two dictionaries from which she studies: one is an online subscription to the Merriam-Webster unabridged dictionary and the other is a physical dictionary that she said is “the size of five books put together.”
As for her studying strategy, most of the time she studies by herself but on occasion asks her parents or friends to quiz her on words. When she studies, she doesn’t just look at individual words but groups them together in categories like Japanese or German.
“I take those words and I look at them and I see what is in common among all of those words and I see, ‘Oh, German spells this sound in this particular way,’” Ayyagari said. “So instead of looking at individual words and being like, ‘Oh, this word is hard,’ I instead take a look at what is hard about the language as a whole and then try to see if I can make it easier for myself in any way.”
One of the favorite words she’s learned is “kaffeeklatsch,” which means an informal gathering with another person over coffee.
“I like this word a lot because it looks like such an intimidating word at first, but it’s actually really cool,” she said. “And there’s a lot of words that don’t have a specific word in English that can be described by a lot of other languages and this is one of those words. It comes from German actually.”
Getting to learn the meaning behind the words her interested in spelling, Shruthi said.
“You can learn a lot about the world just by studying spelling because spelling is such a vast topic,” she said. “There’s so many different words from so many different niches and fields of study that are covered, like you can learn a lot about science and the arts, architecture, cooking.”
Because Shruthi will age out of the Scripps bee next year, she hopes to keep her spelling interest alive by either starting a spelling bee club at her local elementary school, Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary, or coaching younger students who are interested in spelling.

“Squatty Potty” Millionaire Charged With Possession Of Child Porn Hoard
Robert Edwards, the inventor of the “Squatty Potty” and a contestant on the show “Shark Tank”, has been charged with the possession of a digital hoard of child pornography materials including videos and images.
Edwards, 50, was arrested for allegedly buying and receiving countless images of child sexual abuse between March 2021 and November 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Utah announced Monday. The entrepreneur was indicted by a federal grand jury Feb. 10 and arrested Feb. 12 in Washington County, Utah.
In March 2021, an undercover FBI agent joined a group chat used to trade child abuse materials. In the group chat, there was a meeting room where members viewed a collection of the horrific content being streamed, federal authorities detailed. Participants, including a user later identified as Edwards, were visible in the meeting, according to the DOJ.
In May 2025, FBI agents also learned that Edwards may have purchased additional illicit materials through his PayPal account, which was flagged for four suspicious transactions. In November, law enforcement executed a search warrant on Edwards and his home and confiscated multiple devices that “contained videos and images of child sexual abuse material,” some of which was downloaded only two weeks prior, officials alleged.
Edwards reportedly lives with his male partner and “co-parents” four children. There is no information on their status, and he refers to them as his “step children”.
Robert Edwards is best known for his appearance on Shark Tank with his mother, in which he pitched his idea for a foot rest designed to help people with bowel movements.
Interestingly, one member of the Shark Tank board was noted as saying there was “something” about Edwards that she did not trust because of his odd and shifty behavior. Her observation might have been more prescient than she realized.
Squatty Potty is also known for cutting ties with Kathy Griffin as a spokesperson after she released her infamous promotional pictures in which she is seen holding a fake severed head that looks like Donald Trump. The decision was a company move and not a unilateral firing by Edwards, though he noted that Griffin “crossed the line”.
Edwards ultimately sold Squatty Potty in 2021 and walked away a multi-millionaire.
Edwards is also know for his advocacy work with an NGO called “Equality Utah”, the largest LGBT youth advocacy group in the state. He received an “Excellence In Advocacy” award from them in 2017 and would go on to serve on their board. It should be noted that high profile pedophiles are often found working within NGOs that deal with children’s issues; LGBT children’s groups are particularly targeted.
After the news of Edwards’ arrest and the nature of the charges, Squatty Potty’s viral “unicorn poop” commercial takes on even more suspicious undertones.
In 2019, he was a keynote speaker at the Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Gay-La” event (a membership drive and networking gala supporting the state’s LGBT business community) and participated in their LGBTQ+ Economic Summit, sharing his business story in an LGBT-focused context.
In a 2020 interview with St. George News following the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision (protecting gay and transgender workers from discrimination), Edwards publicly supported equal protection under the law for LGBTQ individuals.
His recent arrest is likely to bring into question his previous advocacy work and his true motives.

MADRID (AP) — La baja de Kylian Mbappé angustia a un Real Madrid que regresa a La Liga española tras una sufrir una inesperada derrota que le costó el liderato.
Se da por descontado que el Real Madrid reciba el lunes a Getafe sin el astro francés debido a una supuesta lesión en la rodilla izquierda que arrastra desde diciembre.
La caída del Madrid el pasado fin de semana permitió al Barcelona recuperar el primer puesto. Agentes federales detienen a estudiante de Columbia, diciendo que buscaban a “persona desaparecida”

NUEVA YORK (AP) — Una estudiante de la Universidad de Columbia fue arrestada a primera hora del jueves por agentes federales de inmigración que lograron entrar a su residencia estudiantil haciéndose pasar por investigadores que buscaban a una “persona desaparecida”, según sus abogados y un comunicado de la presidenta de la universidad.
La estudiante, Ellie Aghayeva, es una alumna de último año de Azerbaiyán que estudia Neurociencia y Ciencias Políticas, indicaron sus abogados. Creadora de contenido, según se describe a sí misma, ha conseguido una amplia audiencia en redes sociales, donde a menudo comparte historias sobre cómo se desenvuelve en la universidad de la Ivy League siendo inmigrante.
A eso de las 7:00 de la mañana del jueves, Aghayeva publicó un mensaje para sus más de 100.000 seguidores en Instagram. “El DHS me arrestó ilegalmente. En una petición de emergencia presentada el jueves, los abogados de Aghayeva señalaron que fue detenida por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) dentro de su residencia estudiantil y luego trasladada a un centro federal de detención en el Bajo Manhattan.
Los agentes no tenían una orden judicial, afirmaron sus abogados, pero “manifestaron que estaban buscando a una persona desaparecida para poder entrar”.
No se dio ninguna razón para el arresto, según la petición, que solicita su liberación inmediata.
En un correo electrónico compartido con estudiantes y personal, la presidenta interina de la universidad, Claire Shipman, indicó que agentes federales habían entrado a un edificio residencial alrededor de las 6:30 de la mañana, alegando que buscaban a una persona desaparecida.
Las consultas al DHS no han recibido respuesta de momento.

“Los domingos”, de Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, sobre la vocación religiosa de una adolescente, y la búsqueda desesperada de respuestas de un padre en “Sirât”, de Oliver Laxe, parten como favoritas para inscribir su nombre en buena parte de las estatuillas.
Se medirán con películas reivindicativas, de acción y comedias que no se lo pondrán fácil.
A continuación, las claves de la 40a edición de los Goya que se entregan el sábado en Barcelona.
Las favoritas
“Los domingos” y Ruiz de Azúa, quien ya sabe lo que es tener un Goya a su nombre gracias a su exitoso debut tras las cámaras en 2022 con “Cinco lobitos”, busca coronar una temporada perfecta que arrancó con la Concha de Oro en el Festival de San Sebastián. Es la clara favorita con 13 candidaturas, incluyendo la de mejor película y mejor dirección.
Laxe y “Sirât”, que con 11 nominaciones es una de las cintas que más ha dado que hablar en el año cinematográfico en España, le plantarán cara en la pugna por los dos grandes premios de la noche. “Maspalomas”, donde José Mari Goenaga y Aitor Arregi narran la decisión de Vicente de reprimir su homosexualidad en su regreso forzado a su ciudad natal; el relato en clave de comedia que hace Manuel Gómez Pereira del festín ordenado por el dictador Francisco Franco en los últimos compases de la guerra civil española en “La cena” y “Sorda”, que explora la vivencia de una madre primeriza con problemas de audición, de Eva Libertad, aspiran también al Goya a mejor película.
Ruíz de Azúa, Laxe y Goenaga y Arregi competirán por el galardón a mejor dirección con Carla Simón, que recoge el viaje de una hija para conocer más de la vida de sus padres, muertos por sida, en “Romería”, y Albert Serra, que firma el documental sobre tauromaquia “Tardes de soledad”.
“Sirât”, en capilla para los Oscar
La gala de Barcelona es una parada más en la intensa gira internacional de Laxe con su cinta, que en poco más de dos meses habrá pasado dos exámenes cruciales en Hollywood.
Tras estrenarse con el premio del jurado en el Festival de Cannes, Laxe regresó con las manos vacías de los Globos de Oro, donde competía por los premios de película en lengua no inglesa y banda sonora. Su revancha ante el público estadounidense podría llegar el 15 de marzo en los Oscar.
Sus rivales por el galardón a mejor largometraje internacional son la brasileña “O Agente Secreto” (“El agente secreto”); las europeas “Yek tasadef sadeh” (“Un simple accidente”; Francia) y “Sentimental Value” (“Valor Sentimental”; Noruega) –que también aspiran al Goya en esta edición–, y la tunecina “Sawt Hind Rajab” (“La voz de Hind Rajab”).
Y las sonidistas Amanda Villavieja, Laia Casanovas y Yasmina Pradera, candidatas a un Goya el sábado, podrían redondear su año con un Oscar por su trabajo en la cinta que arranca en una rave en Marruecos antes de convertirse en un reflejo del accidentado periplo de su protagonista en busca de su hija por las montañas del desértico país del norte de África.
Delante de las cámaras
Gran parte de las alegrías de la austera “Los domingos” en estos Goya recayeron en las categorías actorales para las que fueron nominados varios miembros de su elenco.
Blanca Soroa, que encarna a Ainara, la joven protagonista que lidia con su vocación religiosa en “Los domingos”, podría llevarse el Goya a actriz revelación. Enfrente tendrá a Miriam Garlo, la primera actriz con discapacidad auditiva nominada a los galardones por “Sorda”; Nora Hernández de “La cena”, Elvira Lara de “Los Tortuga” y Llúcia García de “Romería”.
La actuación de Soroa se sustenta en la de dos veteranos, Patricia López Arnáiz y Miguel Garcés, que ejercen de tía y padre y que también podrían lograr una recompensa por sus papeles protagónicos.
Para ganar su segundo Goya, López Arnáiz tendrá que superar a Antonia Zegers (“Los Tortuga”), Nora Navas (“Mi amiga Eva”), Susana Abaitua (“Un fantasma en la batalla”) y Ángela Cervantes (“La furia”).
Miguel Garcés, por su parte, compite con José Ramón Soroiz, quien abandonó momentáneamente su retiro para encarnar al protagonista de “Maspalomas”, Alberto San Juan (“La cena”), Mario Casas (“Muy lejos”) y Manolo Solo (“Una quinta portuguesa”).
Juan Minujín y Nagore Aramburu aspiran a su primer Goya como actores secundarios. El argentino, que se crio en México, opta a su primer Goya frente a Miguel Rellán (“El cautivo”), Kandido Uranga (“Maspalomas”), Tamar Novas (“Rondallas”) y Álvaro Cervantes (“Sorda”). Julio Peña, que se pone en la piel del escritor Miguel de Cervantes en “El cautivo”, una superproducción de Alejandro Amenábar; Antonio Fernández Gabarre (“Ciudad sin sueño”), Hugo Welzel (“Enemigos”), Jan Monter Palau (“Estrany riu”) y Mitch (“Romería”) están nominados a actor revelación.
Cine iberoamericano
Los Goya cumplen con su mirada anual a la producción cinematográfica iberoamericana destacando la película argentina “Belén”, en la que Dolores Fonzi revive la historia real de una joven acusada falsamente de un aborto ilegal; “La misteriosa mirada del Flamenco”, de Diego Céspedes (Chile), un western moderno ambientado en la década de los 80 donde la protagonista crece en el seno de una familia queer a la que culpan de tener una misteriosa enfermedad y “La piel del agua” de Patricia Velásquez (Costa Rica), que sigue a una chica obligada a vivir con un padre con quien apenas tiene relación cuando su madre cae en coma.
La terna la completan la brasileña “Manas”, en la que Marianna Brennand aborda el abuso infantil en la Isla de Marajó, en la selva brasileña, y “Un poeta” (Colombia), de Simón Mesa Soto, sobre la historia de Óscar Restrepo, un poeta fracasado que encuentra un nuevo propósito en servir de guía a una joven promesa de la escritura.
Con el Goya garantizado
Inmunes a las quinielas en torno a quiénes se llevarán los 28 Goya en juego, dos personas tienen garantizado el éxito el sábado: la actriz y productora estadounidense Susan Sarandon y el cineasta, novelista y periodista español Gonzalo Suárez.
Sarandon, de 79 años y que participó en películas como “Thelma & Louise” o “Dead Man Walking” (“Pena de muerte”), por la que ganó un Oscar, recibirá el quinto Goya Internacional de la Academia por su “filmografía extraordinaria, con interpretaciones inolvidables en obras maestras y también en películas que forman parte de la cultura popular; y su valiente compromiso político y social”.
Suárez, de 91 años, recibirá el Goya de Honor en reconocimiento a sus sesenta años de carrera, con más de 20 largometrajes y marcada por la mezcla de géneros y la búsqueda de la libertad creativa.
La fiesta del cine… en Barcelona
Siguiendo el espíritu itinerante de los últimos años, la Academia ha elegido Barcelona para celebrar su 40 aniversario. La ciudad mediterránea fue la primera en recibirlos en su primera salida fuera de Madrid, su sede habitual, en el año 2000.
El actor Luis Tosar y la cantante Rigoberta Bandini serán los encargados de conducir una gala que se prevé larga. Varias actuaciones musicales se intercalarán con los discursos de los premiados.
El director J.A. Bayona y los actores Rossy de Palma, Paco León o Karla Sofía Gascón, entre otros, participarán en la entrega de los “cabezones”, como se conoce popularmente a los pesados bustos del pintor Francisco de Goya, que da nombre a los galardones.

Hillary Clinton told members of Congress on Feb. 26 that she does not have knowledge about crimes carried out by the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
“I had no idea about their criminal activities. I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein. I never flew on his plane or visited his island, homes, or offices,” the former first lady and secretary of state said in her opening statement to the House Oversight Committee.
Clinton said she was horrified to learn about the crimes and was disappointed that Epstein only received 13 months in prison in 2008 after pleading guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution.
Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, was also slated to testify to the panel in its investigation into Epstein. The Clintons agreed to testify after the House of Representatives was prepared to hold them in contempt for originally declining to answer questions on the matter.
Epstein died by suicide in federal prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for conspiring with Epstein to sexually abuse young girls.
Bill Clinton flew on Epstein’s plane in 2002 and 2003, according to flight logs and photographs. Court documents stated he went to Epstein’s island, where authorities say Epstein repeatedly abused minors.
Maxwell told Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in 2025 that she was friends with Bill Clinton and that the former president never went to the island.
“He never, absolutely never went. And I can be sure of that because there’s no way he would have gone. I don’t believe there’s any way that he would’ve gone to the island had I not been there,” she said. “Because I don’t believe he had an independent friendship, if you will, with Epstein.”
Epstein also went to the White House multiple times while Clinton was president. Maxwell also attended the wedding of the Clintons’ only daughter in 2010.
Bill Clinton’s spokesperson told New York Magazine in 2002, “Jeffrey is both a highly successful financier and a committed philanthropist with a keen sense of global markets and an in-depth knowledge of twenty-first-century science.”
A spokesperson for Bill Clinton said after Epstein was arrested by federal authorities that the former president “knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago, or those with which he has been recently charged in New York.”
The spokesperson said that the trips on Epstein’s plane included stops for Clinton Foundation work and that Bill Clinton briefly visited Epstein’s home in New York and met with Epstein in a Clinton office in the city.
“He’s not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade and has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida,” the spokesperson added.
A letter from lawmakers to the Clintons said they wanted to question them, given their family’s past relationships with Epstein and Maxwell. Lawmakers also told Hillary Clinton, “Given your past service as Secretary of State, the Committee believes that you may have knowledge of efforts by the federal government to combat international sex trafficking operations of the type run by Mr. Epstein.”
“The American people have a lot of questions,” Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told reporters in Washington as lawmakers prepared to question the Clintons. “To my knowledge, the Clintons haven’t answered very many, if any, questions about their knowledge or involvement with Epstein and Maxwell.”
Comer said that no one is accusing the Clintons at this time of wrongdoing but that the committee is trying to find answers regarding Epstein, including how he accumulated so much wealth and whether he worked for the government.
