Calumet Country Club to be shut down, all infrastructure to be demolished, owner says
Hazel Crest’s Calumet Country Club, the subject of a longstanding development fight, will be entirely shuttered, with all golf ceasing and all infrastructure to be removed, according to the property owner.
W&E Ventures announced Nov. 10 its plan to permanently close the Calumet Country Club, including all golf course operations, and to remove all infrastructure throughout the property to prevent vagrancy and security issues.
“This will include the removal of all landscaping, golf holes and building structures,” the company said in a news release, saying it was necessary “in an effort to protect public safety in the Hazel Crest community.”
The club had already closed for the winter season in October.
W&E Ventures CEO Walt Brown, Jr., an Arizona businessman, bought the property in 2020.
“We’re trying to get a permit. We’re working on submitting the plans for the demolition,” Brown said. “As quick as the city or county will issue the demolition permits, we can start that process.”
Liz Varmecky, co-founder of South Suburbs for Greenspace, a community group that has resisted efforts to develop the property for industrial use, called the announcement “a lot of bluster” and said she doubted Brown would go through with it.
“He has said many times in the past golf won’t be open the next season, and then come March, golf is open,” Varmecky said.
Efforts by Brown to develop the parcel for industrial use have been repeatedly stonewalled by community opposition, first in Homewood and then in Hazel Crest. The property was formerly a part of Homewood, but following a lawsuit between Brown and the village, it was detached from Homewood and annexed into Hazel Crest.
“We’re going to redevelop it at some point in time, when we do, we’ll figure it out from there, but we’re not interested in operating the golf anymore,” Brown said.
Before any redevelopment can happen, the Hazel Crest will have to rezone the parcel for industrial use, something residents have strongly opposed.

Varmecky said the plan to remove all the infrastructure and landscaping from the property didn’t make sense.
“That’s going to be a huge expense to take down trees, to take down landscaping, for what?” Varmecky said. “To avoid vagrancy, which, there isn’t a problem with vagrancy. And why would a golf hole or a sandpit cause additional vagrancy? It doesn’t make sense, logically and financially.”
Brown said people camping on the property had been removed before, and that removing the landscaping was to prepare the land for future development.
“We tend to have to remove people from the property. We’ve done it multiple times, where they’ve moved in and camped out, trying to hover on the property,” Brown said. “We’re a little worried that someone would break into the building or the buildings, so we’re going to remove the buildings and make sure that we have no liability.”

Village Manager Dante Sawyer said in an email that Calumet Country Club’s golf would undoubtedly be missed. He said the village had had no specific public safety concerns about the property.
The most recent news regarding potential development of the parcel came last month, when Minnesota-based real estate development and management property Ryan Companies presented plans to develop the property to the Hazel Crest Village Board. Ryan Companies didn’t detail any specific plans, but representatives said they saw the most potential in industrial development.
A Ryan Companies spokesperson said the company had no new updates to share.

Varmecky said she and others at South Suburbs for Greenspace suspect the company won’t be following through on their interest.
“What we suspect is that Ryan Companies, after meeting with the board at Hazel Crest, never got back to Hazel Crest,” Varmecky said. “I think that they withdrew.”
Sawyer said the next step for a partnership between the company and the village would be a market study, which would gather information on potential development options and market conditions.
Brown said he had been talking to multiple companies interested in potentially developing the parcel, though he said he wasn’t aware of specific developments regarding Ryan Companies.
“We have five or six different groups talking to us, and we’ve said, ‘Go talk to the city and figure out whatever they want you to do,’” Brown said. “There’s multiple suitors out there that have expressed interest.”

Sudán del Sur reanuda exportaciones de petróleo tras ataque con drones

YUBA, Sudán del Sur (AP) — Sudán del Sur ha reanudado el transporte y exportación de petróleo crudo después de que ataques con drones en dos instalaciones petroleras del vecino Sudán obligaran a suspender las operaciones transfronterizas, informó un alto funcionario el miércoles.
El subsecretario del Ministerio de Petróleo, Deng Lual Wol, dijo a los periodistas en Yuba que “las operaciones en todos los campos petroleros de Sudán del Sur han vuelto a la normalidad” y que el crudo estaba nuevamente fluyendo a través de los oleoductos hacia los terminales de exportación en Port Sudan, en el Mar Rojo.

CPD use-of-force incidents still climbing at ‘crucial moment’ in reform effort
For the fourth year in a row, use-of-force incidents involving Chicago Police officers are increasing, with advocates and officials saying the trend is helping to bring the reform process to a key point.
CPD officers reported 2,930 such incidents through October 2025, compared to 3,089 incidents in all of 2024. The total has risen each year since 2021, according to data from the city’s Office of Inspector General.
During a Tuesday status hearing in the ongoing consent decree, police reform advocates noted to U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer that 2025 has also seen an increase in CPD officers pointing their guns at citizens.
Department leaders say the upticks are due to enhanced data-collection practices, more rigorous training and more stringent oversight.
Regardless, Assistant Illinois Attorney General Mike Tresnowski told the court Tuesday that things have reached a “crucial point in the consent decree process,” and it’s time for real improvement to be shown.
“CPD’s approach to use-of-force policy and use-of-force training has come a long way” since 2017, Tresnowski said. “The crucial question is, have these policies, trainings, (and) systems resulted in measurable change on the ground?”
In an interview with the Tribune after Tuesday’s hearing, CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling stressed that the department’s internal policies now require officers to fill out use-of-force reports more often, even in instances where an officer was the victim of an attack.
“The more you get on paper, the more you can assess what’s going on,” Snelling said. “The more you create training around it, you can determine if there (are) patterns or practices that you need to address.”
“Look, if there was something that I was trying to hide,” he said, “we wouldn’t have all these (data) dashboards we have up now.”
Earlier this year, CPD released an internal report that detailed the rise in use-of-force incidents, which are analyzed by the department’s Tactical Review and Evaluation Division, “TRED.” CPD officials have acknowledged that TRED remains in a backlog of incidents to review. Firearm pointing incidents, though, are now reviewed CPD captains assigned to each of the department’s 22 patrol districts.
“We want to get on it as soon as it happens,” Snelling said of the captains’ analyses. “This is how you change behavior. This is how you change the culture.”
The latest consent decree hearing came just days before the 10th anniversary of the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video — arguably the most impactful police shooting in Chicago since the December 1969 killing of Fred Hampton — which sparked a U.S. Department of Justice investigation that ultimately led to the consent decree.
“We look at what happened in the Laquan McDonald shooting compared to now (and) we have made major, major progress in transparency, effectiveness and investigating police-involved shootings,” Snelling said Tuesday.
Less than an hour after Tuesday’s court hearing began, a CPD officer shot and wounded a man in the Washington Park neighborhood. That shooting remains under investigation by CPD and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

The independent monitoring team, led by former federal prosecutor Maggie Hickey, last month released its 12th bi-annual report on the city’s compliance with the consent decree, codified in early 2019.
There are three levels of compliance: Preliminary, secondary and full. Preliminary compliance signifies CPD has developed a training curriculum; secondary compliance means training has been implemented; and full compliance means that the policy is fully part of the department’s day-to-day operations.
The monitoring team found that CPD has reached preliminary compliance with 94% of monitorable paragraphs in the consent decree. Secondary compliance has been reached in 66% of paragraphs, and 23% of consent decree paragraphs have reached full compliance, Hickey said Tuesday.
Since the consent decree was established, the independent monitoring team has regularly called on CPD to bolster its data retention and analysis efforts. Despite the progress, associate consent decree monitor Paul Evans, the former commissioner of the Boston Police Department, said Tuesday that CPD officers still do not fully abide by the department’s body-worn camera policy.
“The CPD’s use of body-worn cameras has improved dramatically, but body-worn camera compliance remains a significant issue due to CPD officer too frequently, for example, activating their body-worn cameras later than required under the policy,” Evans said.

An increasing number of American households are falling behind on their utility bills as energy costs remain elevated heading into winter, according to a new analysis from two nonprofits.
Past-due balances owed to electric and gas utilities have climbed from $597 to $789 over the past three years—a 32 percent jump that a Nov. 17 report from The Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers says is an indication of growing financial strain on millions of American households.
“Rising utility costs are already taking a toll on family finances,” the report states.
“The Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers’ analysis of consumer credit data shows an avalanche of household utility debt has been building over the past three years.”
The two nonprofits predicted that the utility-debt situation “will likely worsen” in the coming months.
Millions Facing Severe Delinquency
The analysis, which draws on data from the University of California Consumer Credit Panel, estimates that nearly one in 20 households—about 14 million people—now have utility debt severe enough that it has been or will soon be sent to collections. In parts of the South and Appalachia, where collection practices tend to be harsher, that figure is closer to one in 12.
Most of the 32 percent increase in overdue utility debt cited in the report took place under President Joe Biden, but the pace of increase has yet to flatten under President Donald Trump. During the first six months of Trump’s second term, the number of households with severely overdue utility debt increased by approximately 117,000, representing a 3.8 percent rise.
“Our findings paint a grim picture: a toxic combination of increasing energy prices, rising overdue balances, and squeezed household budgets that together are pushing families deeper and deeper into debt,” the report states.
“For many Americans, higher heating costs this winter could be the tipping point.”
Over the past year, past-due balances on utility bills climbed by nearly 10 percent. Monthly energy bills rose even faster, jumping by 12 percent year over year and 35 percent over the past three years—nearly triple the pace of overall inflation.
No part of the country has been spared. Average monthly bills exceed $300 in parts of the Northeast, but heavy cooling demand has pushed costs in Arizona ($289), California ($303), Texas ($269), and much of the Southeast into similarly high territory. The analysis notes that its data precede the peak heat of summer 2025, meaning current bills are likely even higher.
Political Backdrop and White House Response
The utility debt surge comes amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to address the cost-of-living crisis that has plagued the country and was a key pain point for many voters in the 2024 presidential election.
The president plans to discuss the economy and affordability issues on Nov. 17 at an event hosted by McDonald’s. He has repeatedly stated that inflation is falling.
“In fact, costs under the TRUMP ADMINISTRATION are tumbling down, helped greatly by gasoline and ENERGY. Affordability is a lie when used by the Dems. It is a complete CON JOB,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Nov. 14.
The current annual inflation rate sits at 3 percent, lower than the peak of 9 percent notched in June 2022. Still, inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target, and central bank officials have said that the fight against price pressures has not yet been won.
Despite that progress has been made on the cost-of-living front, consumer optimism has fallen in recent months, driven in part by affordability concerns.
At the beginning of November, consumer sentiment was at a three-year low, the decline fueled by a 17 percent drop in perceptions of current personal finances and an 11-point decline in expectations for year-ahead business conditions.

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. will have season-ending knee surgery — leaving Kirk Cousins as starter
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will have season-ending surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The Falcons announced Penix’s surgery plans Wednesday, two days after saying the 25-year-old would be placed on injured reserve and miss at least four games while awaiting a second opinion on the severity of the injury. The team said the second opinion confirmed that Penix has a partially torn ligament in the knee.
The loss of Penix leaves veteran Kirk Cousins as the starter for the remainder of the season as the Falcons (3-7) prepare to play Sunday in New Orleans.
Penix suffered the injury during last week’s 30-27 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers that extended the Falcons losing streak to five games.
Coach Raheem Morris said Wednesday that Easton Stick would be signed to the active roster from the practice squad to serve as Cousins’ backup. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup Kyle Trask will be signed to the practice squad.
Morris acknowledged that he couldn’t say if Penix would be recovered in time for the start of the 2026 season. He also said Penix’s season-ending surgery would affect the team’s offseason plan “100%” at quarterback.
“To answer that in the shortest possible way, yes,” Morris said.
If there’s uncertainty about Penix’s recovery schedule, the team is likely to look for help in free agency or the draft.
Penix had two ACL surgeries on his right knee during his college career. His last ACL surgery came in 2020 at Indiana. He transferred to Washington in 2021.
“It gives me great ease because of Michael, first of all knowing he’s been through it,” Morris said.
The Falcons also are expected to be without top wide receiver Drake London on Sunday. Morris said Wednesday that London, who also has a knee injury, won’t play against the Saints and his status is “week to week.”
Penix missed the Falcons’ 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 26 with a bone bruise on his left knee. He suffered the more significant injury Sunday when he was hit by Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig after throwing an incomplete pass.
Penix, the team’s 2024 first-round pick, was 13 of 16 for 175 yards against the Panthers after completing only 12 of 28 passes in a 31-25 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 9 in Berlin.
The Falcons offense struggled in Cousins’ first start of the season in the loss to the Dolphins. Morris noted there was uncertainty at quarterback in practice leading up to that game, but this week Cousins will have the advantage of taking all the first-team snaps.
“We’ve got to find a way to get a win because he’s capable of doing it and he’s done it in the past,” Morris said, noting the Falcons started the 2024 season 6-3 with Cousins as the starter.

CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ (AP) — Un día antes del importante partido contra El Salvador en el cierre de las eliminatorias mundialistas de la CONCACAF, Thomas Christiansen se expresó ilusionado y dijo que deseaba seguir los pasos de su colega colombiano Hernán Darío Gómez, entrenador de los salvadoreños y quien llevó a Panamá a su primer Mundial en Rusia 2018.
El técnico hispano-danés, de 52 años, logró la noche del martes cristalizar ese deseo, luego que Panamá avanzara directamente, como primero de su grupo, a la Copa del Mundo del próximo año, tras arrollar en casa 3-0 a la selección dirigida por el “Bolillo” Gómez y recibir la “ayuda” de la eliminada Guatemala, que derrotó como local a Surinam 3-1. Los surinameses aseguraron uno de los dos boletos al repechaje.
No fue una eliminatoria fácil para los panameños a pesar de que llegaron como los mejores ubicados en el ranking de la FIFA entre las 12 selecciones que disputaron la ronda final y después de haber sumado en la zona subcampeonatos en la Liga de Naciones y la Copa de Oro.
En octubre, luego de haber transcurrido las cuatro primeras fechas de seis, Panamá ni siquiera estaba en zona de repechaje, después de hilvanar tres empates, dos de ellos en casa frente a Guatemala y Surinam.
Las críticas abundaban en torno a la gestión de Christiansen y a la falta de contundencia de la selección.
En la víspera del crucial partido como visitante ante Guatemala la semana pasada, el técnico de ese país, el mexicano Luis Fernando Tena, caldeó el ambiente al señalar que la mayor presión la tenían los panameños debido a que si no le salían bien las cosas sería el segundo fracaso seguido en la era Christiansen.
Panamá terminó ganando ese juego en Guatemala 3-2, para meterse momentáneamente en zona de repechaje.
“Lo que me dolió es la falta de confianza en el grupo”, manifestó Christiansen en la rueda de prensa posterior a la clasificación. “Los jugadores tenían la capacidad, la calidad y mostraron porqué son Panamá y han conseguido lo que han conseguido”.
Christiansen fue contratado en 2020 para llevar las riedas de Panamá y con la misión de llevar a la selección canalera a su segundo Mundial tras su primera clasificación a Rusia 2018 bajo la conducción del “Bolillo” Gómez. El recuerdo de su padre
Christiansen se quebró en la rueda de prensa al recordar a su padre fallecido en marzo del año pasado.

Two years after the sudden closure of the North Mineral Springs Road bridge in Porter, work will finally start on its replacement.
Dunnet Bay Construction of Glendale, Illinois, was awarded the contract for $2,440,121.86 by the Porter County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 28, said Mike Jabo, executive director of the Porter County Department of Development and Stormwater Management.
A pre-construction conference will be held by Porter County with the contractor in early December. The contractor will provide a schedule at that time, which will include the date of when the work will begin, Jabo said.
“There’s a lot of prep work that has to go on before construction can start,” Jabo said.
It is hoped that construction could be substantially completed by Aug. 1, 2026.
The North Mineral Springs Road bridge was closed on Dec. 1, 2023, when an inspection revealed its unsafe condition due to dangerously rusted beams over the East Branch of the Little Calumet River. There was a real possibility that a vehicle could have caused the bridge to collapse into the river, officials said then.
The Spring House Inn complex, which includes an Uno’s Pizzeria, a bar and banquet facilities, has suffered financially as a result, because easy access from U.S. 20 was shut down with the bridge’s closure.
Vishal Patel, who owns the complex, has said the bridge closing cost him up to 50% of his hotel business, and receipts are down 40% with his restaurant business.
Patel depends on visitors to the Indiana Dunes National and State parks during the summer high season. The majority of the losses came in the 2024 and 2025 summer season. Most of the 2026 season will also be lost because of construction.
The town of Porter has tried to help by posting detour signs on U.S. 20, but it hasn’t been enough.
It also took time for Porter County officials to determine how it would pay for the bridge replacement.
The North Mineral Springs Road bridge was originally on the schedule to be replaced either in 2026 or 2027.
To speed the process, the county government decided to forego federal funding and finance the project itself.
There were additional issues, such as obtaining right-of-way and an architectural design that will raise the new bridge to a higher elevation above the water.
Another issue that the contractor will have to work around is the migration of Coho and Chinook salmon in the river between July and November.
