Column: Thanksgiving brings out the best in many of us
Over the decades, we’ve seen plenty wrong with America, mainly among our political elites. But when the chips are down, the people always come through to make us a better nation.
During the recent government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was slashed. Nearly 2 million Illinoisans lost that food aid until it was fully restored on Nov. 20.
During that loss, area food pantries and other nonprofits that dole out aid struggled to help needy families. Yet, individuals stepped up with donations of canned goods, foodstuffs and monetary assistance to keep the larders full.
Such altruism continues during this Thanksgiving week and beyond as people volunteer to fight hunger among their fellow citizens. Such work should warm the hearts of even our most curmudgeonly neighbors.
Such self-sacrifice is offered by “Big Ed” Nero, co-owner of Big Ed’s BBQ on Lakehurst Road in Waukegan’s Fountain Square entertainment zone. The restaurant will hold its 10th-annual free Thanksgiving dinner giveaway on Nov. 27.
“This is our way to say thank you to our community for supporting us for all these years,” states a flyer at the eatery. From noon to 4 p.m., Thanksgiving Day, the restaurant will offer dine-in T-bird dinners in addition to curbside pickup, with a limit of two dinners per car.
“If you are working, a first responder on duty, homeless or you’re just down on your luck and don’t want to be alone on Thanksgiving Day and in need of a hot meal, you can come to Big Ed’s,” the flyer says. The menu includes turkey, ham, cornbread dressing, gravy, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.
That sounds a lot tastier than my usual T-Bird haute cuisine, a Hungry-Man turkey dinner. If not familiar with Big Ed’s, the restaurant serves some of the best slow-smoked barbecue in Lake County. Don’t take my word for it, the restaurant has the competition kudos to back that claim.
Big Ed’s isn’t the only one giving back to the community.
Volunteers from Gurnee Community Church, at O’Plaine Road and Old Grand Avenue, will host their annual Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 27 for 130 “boots” from Naval Station Great Lakes, as well as members of the local community.
Churches and their members fill a good chunk of the nation’s volunteerism corps. Some 150 volunteers work to make the Gurnee event a success.
The day includes a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner and afternoon tea for the Navy recruits, many of whom are away from home for the first time. It also gives sailors the chance to call loved ones. On the morning of Thanksgiving Day, church volunteers also help out with Gurnee’s annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot to benefit the church’s youth mission trips.
Gurnee paper-shredding and electronics recycler, Paper Tiger, at Route 41 and Estes Street, is another of many companies that contribute to helping food-neglected neighbors. At its Shred Fest event last Saturday, the company asked customers to bring a can of food to support the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Paper Tiger is also expected to donate more than $5,500 this year to sustain food bank operations.
Perhaps it is inbred in Americans to aid their fellow citizens when they need help, especially during the holiday season. But it hasn’t been only Americans who have been recipients of our generosity.
Those of a certain age may recall when CARE packages were aimed at those living in a devastated Western Europe after the end of World War II and not treats for collegians. Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere began in 1946 as part of the Marshall Plan to send food and supplies to a starving Europe.
Indeed, following V-E Day, President Harry Truman sent former President Herbert Hoover on a fact-finding journey to Western Europe. “It is now 11:59 on the clock of starvation,” Hoover reported, finding that in France more than 50% of children in industrial areas of the country had rickets, and 70% to 80% suffered diminished growth due to malnutrition.
The Marshall Plan, named for George Marshall, a World War II general and later secretary of state, began in 1948 and transferred $13.3 billion in economic recovery programs to Western Europe to rebuild war-torn nations. Historians tell us some 18 countries received benefits, with the then-Soviet Union rejecting any U.S. aid for Eastern European nations under its totalitarian reign.
That being said, we continue to be a beacon for food and freedom for millions around the world, even if some of our leaders fail to recognize the need for a generous United States during this Thanksgiving week. Unlike many of us.

Judge Dismisses Cases Against Comey, Letitia James
A federal judge has dismissed cases against former FBI Director James Comey and NY Attorney General Letitia James, after finding that US Attorney Lindsey Halligan was unlawfully appointed to the role, and that AG Pam Bondi cannot ratify her actions.
Judge Cameron McGowan Currie, a Clinton appointee, dismissed the case without prejudice over Halligan’s appointment, meaning the DOJ can try again when they get their act together.
“I conclude that all actions flowing from Ms. Halligan’s defective appointment, including securing and signing Ms. James’s indictment, constitute unlawful exercises of executive power and must be set aside,” the judge wrote in an order in James’ case.
Comey pleaded not guilty to charges that he lied to Congress during a 2020 hearing and obstructed their proceeding.

The indictment against Comey came as the statute of limitations was set to expire. Trump ousted U.S. attorney Erik Siebert, who had reportedly believed there was not enough evidence to bring a case against Comey or New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump replaced Siebert with Lindsey Halligan, who had previously worked for him. She is now serving as the interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia despite having no prosecutorial experience.
Judge William Fitzpatrick warned in a November opinion that “a disturbing pattern of profound investigative missteps” could have undermined the proceedings, leaving the indictment in jeopardy.

PoCo Muse exhibit features Porter County’s first non-native settler

BOGOTÁ (AP) — Un mensaje anónimo recibido por la autoridad migratoria de Colombia la semana pasada alertó la presencia en el país del grupo judío ultraortodoxo Lev Tahor, al que las autoridades descubrieron en poder de 17 menores de edad extranjeros, algunos de ellos reportados como desaparecidos en sus países de origen.
El aviso apuntaba a la presencia del grupo en un hotel de Yarumal, un poblado en el noroeste del país, del departamento de Antioquia. La estadía en ese lugar permitió que las autoridades de Migración Colombia hicieran verificaciones de la presencia de ciudadanos extranjeros sin requerir una orden judicial, según indicó el lunes a The Associated Press la directora de la entidad, Gloria Arriero López.
Con la vía libre para ingresar al hotel a verificar la información, pidieron refuerzos al instituto de salvaguarda de menores y a los Grupos de Acción Unificada por la Libertad Personal (GAULA), que son unidades de élite de la policía y el Ejército para combatir el secuestro.
El operativo inició en la noche del sábado y terminó en la mañana del domingo, cuando el Ejército y Migración Colombia informaron sobre el hallazgo de nueve adultos y 17 menores de edad que, según dijeron, manifestaron pertenecer a la secta.
El GAULA indicó a la AP que los adultos son estadounidenses, guatemaltecas y canadienses.
Lev Tahor, fundada en Jerusalén en la década de 1980, ha cambiado de ubicación y se ha asentado en países como Estados Unidos y Guatemala. En este último país, fueron recuperados 160 niños el año pasado, tras denuncias de presuntos abuso.
En junio, El Salvador entregó a Israel a Eluzur Rumpler, líder de Lev Tahor, investigado por supuestos abusos contra menores.
En Colombia ingresaron el 22 y 23 de octubre provenientes de Nueva York y de Panamá, divididos en dos grupos: uno ingresó por el aeropuerto de Cartagena, en el Caribe colombiano, y otro por el aeropuerto de Rionegro, en Antioquia, detalló Arriero López.
“Entraron sin alertas y las circulares amarillas (de Interpol) se emitieron cuando estaban en Colombia”, señaló la víspera Migración Colombia en la red social X sin dar más detalles.
Según Arriero López, al revisar los documentos durante el operativo, encontraron que cinco menores de edad estadounidenses y guatemaltecos eran buscados en todo el mundo mediante notificación amarilla de la Interpol.
¿Qué pasará con los menores?
Los menores fueron resguardados en un centro estatal bajo supervisión del Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar, encargado de la niñez.
El Ejército divulgó a la prensa un video en el que los menores y adultos, vestidos con túnicas, salieron por sus propios medios del hotel y subieron a un vehículo estatal.
El operativo no derivó en capturas, dado que los adultos no tienen requerimientos judiciales en Colombia.
“Aquí no hay denuncias, entonces nosotros como Migración Colombia estamos revisando qué proceso administrativo se va a dar, lo más seguro es que sea la expulsión”, aseguró Arriero López.
Las autoridades colombianas indicaron el domingo en un comunicado que trabajan en establecer la situación de los menores recuperados y verificar que no hayan sido víctimas de abuso o de trata de personas.
Arriero López aseguró que tienen indicios de que la secta pretendía crecer en Colombia y asentarse en una hacienda de Yarumal, el mismo poblado donde fueron hallados.
Jefe militar de EEUU visita tropas en el Caribe mientras Trump aumenta presión sobre Venezuela
El jefe militar de Estados Unidos visitaba el lunes a las tropas estadounidenses en Puerto Rico y en un buque de guerra de la Marina en la región, donde Estados Unidos ha acumulado una flota inusualmente grande de destructores y ha estado atacando embarcaciones sospechosas de transportar droga.

The incident highlights the growing public-safety crisis in Democrat-run cities and may only suggest what’s to come under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, who represents the neighborhood of Malba, a small, wealthy residential area in northeastern Queens, was absolutely disgusted by the lawlessness…

Last night in Malba, a large group of individuals from outside my district conducted an illegal ‘takeover’ of a quiet residential street at approximately 12:30am. This is not the first time it’s happened.
A private security guard attempted to calm the situation — he was assaulted by the mob and his vehicle was set on fire. He suffered significant injuries. A local resident was also assaulted.
Response to this incident was less than ideal. Residents reporting the incident to 911 were told that ‘quality of life team’ and 311 should handle the situation. Unacceptable. In fact, these violent street takeovers should be met with maximum force by the police department.
We have NEVER had these problems before. Now it’s an epidemic. What changed? We stopped arresting criminals.
I am meeting this morning with the chief of department and the local precinct at the scene to discuss exactly what happened last night. I have already been assured that Malba will receive four dedicated patrol cars from this point forward, as well as additional security upgrades that we cannot disclose.
However, the city MUST do something to stop this lawlessness. All the speed cameras in the world do absolutely NOTHING to prevent these incidents — we need police response and the most severe consequences for these criminals, not to simply allow them to drive away after they’ve completed their mayhem.
These incidents are happening citywide, and they’re happening because there are no longer any real consequences to this kind of criminality. But let me make something very clear to the criminals — you are risking your lives bringing this chaos into our neighborhoods.
I know for a fact there were multiple armed residents who exercised extreme restraint last night, however that level of restraint is not guaranteed. If the city refuses to do what’s necessary, the people might.
Once again I want to urge any residents of my district who are interested in obtaining their carry or premises permits to contact my office. We are offering assistance with the application process and legal fees to all who wish to exercise their constitutional right to self protection.

Flying for Thanksgiving? Airlines say is travel back to normal after delays and cancellations earlier this month.
Travelers heading to O’Hare International and Midway airports this week can rest assured that a government-shutdown related national air traffic meltdown has been averted, airlines said.
Passengers can expect things to be mostly back to normal after a rocky period this fall, airlines said. Earlier this month, the Federal Aviation Administration mandated flight cuts at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, including at O’Hare and Midway, leading to significant numbers of flight cancellations.

The flight cut mandate came as the nation’s air traffic system dealt with shortages of controllers — who were working long hours without pay during the government shutdown.
The FAA is expecting the busiest Thanksgiving travel period in 15 years this year. More than 52,000 flights are expected to take off on Tuesday, Nov. 25, the peak travel day of the season.
With the shutdown over and the federal mandate lifted, “we’re not looking back,” Laura Mandile, United Airlines’ managing director of customer service for O’Hare, said in an interview last week. Thanksgiving travel bookings rose 15% the weekend after the government shutdown ended, United said.
The airline will average more than 500 departures a day from O’Hare during the Thanksgiving period.
Mandile recommends people flying during the busy Thanksgiving rush plan ahead. Typical holiday travel challenges remain, even if a worst-case scenario has been averted.
“Use your spidey sense,” Mandile said — especially when it comes to Chicago traffic on the way to the airport.
American Airlines, the second largest operator at O’Hare after United, said it plans to fly around 5,850 flights out of O’Hare during the two-week period around Thanksgiving. That’s close to 40% more departures than it flew during the same period last year as the airline has ramped up its schedule at O’Hare.
“With the FAA’s flight reduction order behind us, we know travelers flying into and out of ORD want confidence in their Thanksgiving travel plans — and they can count on American to deliver,” the airline’s vice president of O’Hare operations, Ben Humphrey, said in a statement.
Airlines have “rebounded in an impressive way,” said Joseph Schwieterman, director of DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. But, he said, “there’s still a wildcard factor that could throw a wrench into the system.”
Air traffic towers and centers around the country are “going to be pushed to the max,” because of the glut of air traffic during the Thanksgiving period, Schwieterman said.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the union for air traffic workers, had been raising the alarm about chronic understaffing in the industry long before the shutdown this fall.
And because flights are departing jam-packed with passengers, it’s harder for airlines to turn flights around quickly, Schwieterman said. That means any delays can ripple throughout the system.
Weather-wise, Chicagoans can expect scattered rain on Tuesday followed by a blustery cold front to roll in by mid-week. Some snow is possible over the weekend, with possible travel impacts on Saturday, the National Weather Service said in a social media post. “It’s much too early to narrow down specific details with this system,” the NWS cautioned on X.
