“La intención es que esta transacción permita tanto a Viva como Volaris ofrecer tarifas bajas y más vuelos punto a punto”, afirmó Juan Carlos Zuazua, director ejecutivo de Viva, al explicar en el comunicado los alcances de la operación, que aún no cuenta con la aprobación de las autoridades y los accionistas de las empresas.
Sobre los beneficios que traerá la sinergia, Viva y Volaris informaron que les permitirá “menores costos de propiedad de la flota, mejor acceso a capital y una posición financiera más sólida”.
Además de Volaris y Viva, en el país operan Aeroméxico y la estatal Mexicana, que es manejada por el Ejército, además de otras pequeñas líneas regionales.
Durante el primer semestre de este año Viva y Volaris lideraron el mercado de vuelos nacionales al transportar en conjunto 22,44 millones pasajeros, lo que representó un aumento de 8,2% respecto del mismo período del año pasado, según cifras oficiales.
Asimismo, entre enero y junio pasado las aerolíneas comerciales trasladaron desde México 30,45 millones de pasajeros en vuelos internacionales, superando en 1,7% las cifras de 2024. Ese mercado fue liderado por Aeroméxico y Volaris.
Las autoridades no han ofrecido hasta el momento comentarios sobre la fusión.

Sony buys a majority stake in the ‘Peanuts’ comic for $457 million from Canada’s WildBrain

Sony is buying a 41% stake in the Charles M. Schulz comic “Peanuts” and its characters including Snoopy and Charlie Brown from Canada’s WildBrain in a $457 million deal, the two companies said Friday.
The deal adds to Sony’s existing 39% stake, bringing its shareholding to 80%, according to a joint statement. The Schulz family will continue to own the remaining 20%.
“With this additional ownership stake, we are thrilled to be able to further elevate the value of the ‘Peanuts’ brand by drawing on the Sony Groupʼs extensive global network and collective expertise,” Sony Music Entertainment President Shunsuke Muramatsu said.
“Peanuts” made its debut Oct. 2, 1950, in seven newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune. The travails of the “little round-headed kid” Charlie Brown and pals including Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty and his pet beagle Snoopy eventually expanded to more than 2,600 newspapers, reaching millions of readers in 75 countries.
The strip offers enduring images of kites stuck in trees, Charlie Brown trying to kick a football, tart-tongued Lucy handing out advice for a nickel and Snoopy taking the occasional flight of fancy to the skies. Phrases such as “security blanket,” “good grief” and “happiness is a warm puppy” are a part of the global vernacular. Schulz died in 2000.
Sony acquired its first stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC in 2018 from Toronto-based WildBrain Ltd. In Friday’s transaction, Sony’s music and movie arms signed a “definitive agreement” with WildBrain to buy its remaining stake for $630 million Canadian dollars ($457 million).
Rights to the “Peanuts” brand and management of its business are handled by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Peanuts Holdings.
WildBrain also owns other kids’ entertainment franchises including Strawberry Shortcake and Teletubbies.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has completed a postmortem of the party’s 2024 election losses but will keep the report confidential, DNC Chair Ken Martin said on Dec. 18.

Martin said in a statement provided to media outlets that releasing the report would only distract the party from its mission to win the next election.
“In our conversations with stakeholders from across the Democratic ecosystem, we are aligned on what’s important, and that’s learning from the past and winning the future,” he stated.
“Here’s our North Star: Does this help us win? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from the core mission.”
Details of the report were not immediately available. The Epoch Times has reached out to the DNC for further information, but did not receive a response by publication time.
Kamala Harris, who was vice president at the time, lost the 2024 election to Republican Donald Trump, who returned to the White House for a second term. Harris stepped in as the Democratic presidential candidate after then-President Joe Biden withdrew his bid.
During an Oct. 26 interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Harris suggested that she may run for the presidency again in 2028.
“I am not done,” she said.
“I have lived my entire career, a life of service, and it’s in my bones, and there are many ways to serve. I’ve not decided yet what I will do in the future beyond what I am doing right now.”
The interview took place as Harris was on tour promoting her book “107 Days,” released on Sept. 23, detailing the days she spent running for president against Trump last year.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said in an interview with The Hill published on Apr. 22 that he thinks leaders of the Democratic Party have not yet deeply explored why they lost the White House, failed to reclaim the House, and lost their Senate majority in November 2024.
“We have not done a forensic of what just went wrong, period, full stop,” Newsom said at the time. “I don’t think it, I know it.”
The DNC in April unveiled plans to allocate $1 million per month to state parties across the country over the next four years—the party’s largest-ever investment into state parties—as part of its “organize everywhere, win anywhere” strategy.
Martin said Apr. 24 that the strategy is part of the party’s new four-year agreement to build up state-level infrastructure and operations and deliver more resources into organizing and winning elections.
Former DNC Chair Jaime Harrison called the strategy a “game changer.”
“We are about to witness the true magic and progress that can be made by an unencumbered DNC,” he wrote in an April 24 post on X. “Never again should any DNC have to run every ‘party’ decision by a staffer at the White House.”

Europe has folded rather quickly on EU leaders’ controversial plan to confiscate Russian assets held in Belgium’s depository Euroclear to use as a reparations loan for Ukraine.
On Friday it became clear in the two day Brussels summit the EU was unable to agree on the plan, but instead has opted to raise €90 billion ($105 billion) in joint borrowing, with Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia choosing not to take part.
Not only had objecting member states like Hungary sent EU leaders scrambling to circumvent a normal vote, but Belgium has remained unwavering in insisting on unlimited guarantees tied to assets held on its territory.
Fearing immediate Russian retaliation, Belgium wanted assurance that the rest of the EU would step in and absorb whatever retaliatory measures, including lawsuits, would result from the asset seizure.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever recently summed up the dilemma best: “We do not wish to be at war with Russia. We must negotiate based on reality, not fantasy. In reality, you don’t steal money from a foreign central bank. Stealing from a central bank is like robbing an embassy.”
So it appears EU leadership has backed down, perhaps having learned their lesson from Biden weaponizing the dollar early in the Ukraine war. As a reminder, here’s what President Vladimir Putin had to say by way of warning back in spring of 2024:
“The dollar is the cornerstone of the United States’ power… it is the main weapon used by the U.S. to preserve its power across the world,” the Russian leader said. “As soon as the political leadership decided to use the dollar as a tool of political struggle, a blow was dealt to this American power.”
As for the failed effort to permanently seize the some 210 billion euros ($247bn) in Russian assets held in Europe, EU officials had played down the possibility of an alternative plan right up to the eve of the summit.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spearheaded the efforts, but now the setback marks a blow for he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who had pitched the reparations loan hard while not presenting another alternative.
Still, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed that the immediate objective had been met. “The bottom line is that our support for Ukraine is secured,” Frederiksen told reporters. But Russia won’t be the one being forced to pay for wartime destruction.
As it stands now, EU member states will borrow from financial markets and cover the interest costs themselves. The loan is intended to be interest-free for now, with no clear future plan on just how it will be recouped. European Council President Antonio Costa said that “technical aspects of the reparations loan” must still be “worked out.”

The suspect, who entered Germany as an au pair in 2024 and reportedly received military training, faces deportation amid a pattern of threats targeting Europe’s holiday traditions.

Officials believe he was driven by Islamist ideology and had expressed plans to target gatherings, prompting immediate action to prevent execution. Deportation proceedings are underway, based on assessments deeming him a direct terrorist threat to Germany’s security.
According to reports from DW, the migrant arrived in Germany in June 2024. Additional details from Welt, cited in Remix News updates, reveal he entered as an au pair, completed nursing training during his stay, and is believed to have prior military training—raising profound concerns about screening failures for entrants from high-risk regions.
This incident marks the second foiled Christmas market plot in Germany within days. As we highlighted yesterday, five foreigners—an Egyptian imam, a Syrian, and three Moroccans—were arrested in Lower Bavaria for allegedly scheming to ram a vehicle into crowds and “kill as many people as possible” under Islamist directives, with planning tied to a local mosque.
The threats extend beyond Germany. Polish authorities today announced they thwarted an ISIS-linked plot involving explosives and firearms aimed at a Christmas market, as detailed by the Daily Mail and Euronews. The suspect, a 19-year-old Polish law student, was in contact with IS representatives and gathering explosive materials for a mass-casualty strike.

Emily Ochieng’s younger sisters ‘keep me on my toes.’ Senior center keeps Vernon Hills on the winning track.
Vernon Hills senior center Emily Ochieng has already lived on three continents.
Born in Kenya, Ochieng moved to Switzerland when she was 4 years old and came to the United States in the middle of her freshman year.
“Being exposed to different languages and cultures at such a young age taught me adaptability and opened my perspective early on,” she said.
Ochieng picked up basketball in Switzerland early in the coronavirus pandemic.
“I played on a team made up mostly of boys in an environment that really pushed me to become more aggressive, confident and competitive, and it helped me grow quickly as a player,” she said.
Since then, the 5-foot-10 Ochieng has grown into a player who can make an impact all over the court for Vernon Hills (9-2, 4-0), which leads the Central Suburban North. A third-year starter, Ochieng is averaging 3.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.5 steals. She had eight points and four rebounds in the Cougars’ key conference win over Highland Park on Dec. 12.
“Emily has taken more steps this season,” Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said. “She has helped with press break and will get the ball and go. She has developed more of her ball-handling skills. She plays good team defense, is more vocal, and is a team leader and captain.
“We’re not the same without her, on and off the court. She is making that big of an imprint for us.”
Vernon Hills junior point guard Emma Jocson, who is averaging 11.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 steals, agreed that Ochieng is an important part of the Cougars’ winning formula.
“Her leadership and mindset are what make Emily essential on this team,” Jocson said. “She comes to practice with a positive attitude and great energy. She holds us accountable and is always willing to give advice to the younger players.”

Vernon Hills senior forward Madison Mays, who is averaging 5.4 points and 8.3 rebounds, echoed Jocson.
“Emily is an essential glue player because she brings energy, effort and positivity every day,” Mays said. “She does the little things on the court that help the team succeed and supports her teammates off the court, making everyone better and keeping the team connected.”
Ochieng, who also plays flag football, has plenty of experience with younger kids. She has three sisters whose ages range from 5 to 16.
“My sisters keep me on my toes, especially the youngest,” Ochieng said. “It’s a fun experience. When you are the oldest of the four, it helps not only with basketball but with my other sports in how to handle more pressure. I’m better at leading teams and being a captain because I have a leadership role at home, which also reflects in my game. It also helped me be more responsible.”
Ochieng also is a member of several organizations at school, and she coached fifth graders in the Vernon Hills Park District’s basketball program.
“I really like being active, knowing I can help other people with the skills I’ve learned to better themselves,” she said. “All the experiences have helped me become a better person and to have an impact on the people I meet every day.”

Voters are delivering Democrats in Congress a brutal verdict heading into the 2026 midterm cycle, with just 18 percent approving of their performance and a staggering 73 percent disapproving, the worst rating Quinnipiac has recorded for them since it began asking the question in 2009.
Even Democrats themselves are in open revolt: only 42 percent of Democratic voters approve of how their own party’s members in Congress are doing, while 48 percent now disapprove, a sharp slide from October when approval stood at 58 percent.
Among independents, things descend from terrible to apocalyptic for the Democrats. The gap between approval and disapproval is a huge 61 points, leaving Democrats almost universally despised among this key demographic. But the more shocking revelation came from within their own ranks: for the first time in Quinnipiac’s history, even Democrats themselves are giving congressional Democrats a thumbs down. Support among party voters has cratered 28 points since October—swinging from a positive 22 to a negative 6 in just two months.
“A family squabble spills over into the holidays. Democratic voters want their party to hold the reins of the House but are not the least bit happy about what they are doing at the moment,” Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Republican voters are much more satisfied with how their party’s members in Congress are doing, with 77 percent expressing approval, and only 18 percent expressing disapproval.
The numbers are so bad for the Democrats that CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, couldn’t favorably spin this for the party.
“Democrats, in the minds of the American public, are lower than the Dead Sea,” Enten put it, twisting the knife with a geological metaphor that unfortunately fits. According to new Quinnipiac polling data, congressional Democrats are languishing at a net approval rating of -55 points, an almost comical nosedive that marks their worst showing in over twenty years of tracking. “They have never found Democrats, at least those in Congress, in worse shape than they are right now.”
Enten tried to diagnose how it all went so wrong so fast. He pointed back to October’s government shutdown, when Democrats saw what turned out to be their last flicker of momentum. “I think during the shutdown, there was a bit of a boost for Democrats, right? There was a rallying around the flag effect going on,” he said. “But Democrats did not like how that shutdown turned out.” In short, they got the brief sugar high, then the crash—and now they’re nursing a severe case of political hangover.
The fallout is already reaching individual lawmakers.
“One of the reasons that Dan Goldman is in trouble right now and a potential primary against Brad Ladner is because at this point, the Democratic base is so upset with Democrats,” Enten explained, adding his parting shot: “So even if the Democrats take back Congress, don’t be surprised if Dan Goldman ain’t there because of numbers like this one.”
Translation: victory might come, but not without casualties.
Even the supposedly good news isn’t really all that good. Democrats currently hold a four-point lead on the generic congressional ballot with a Republican president in office, a figure Enten conceded was “pathetically weak” by historical standards. For example, when they won back control of Congress in 2008 and 2018, Democrats led by double digits. Now, their advantage is less than half the normal cushion they’ve enjoyed in similar cycles.
Enten, ever the numbers guy, encouraged some patience while gently deflating any premature triumphalism.
“Yes, you’re on your way to a congressional majority… but it’s still a long time,” he cautioned.
“And with numbers like this, considerably weaker than historically speaking, it might be a tougher road to hoe than normally you would think.”
The data paints an unflattering portrait: a party so strategically dependent on Donald Trump’s unpopularity that it’s ignoring its own. Democrats appear to be counting on Trump’s toxicity to do the heavy lifting, but if their own negatives stay this high, his may not be enough to carry them over the finish line in next year’s midterm elections.
