Colección de artista refleja la resistencia de Ucrania ante la invasión rusa

KIEV, Ucrania (AP) — Maxim Kilderov trabaja entre recordatorios de la muerte: metal chamuscado, tela desgarrada y los escombros personales de vidas truncadas por la guerra.
En un sótano cerca de la Plaza Maidan de Kiev, el artista callejero ucraniano ha reunido una sombría colección de reliquias del campo de batalla que, juntas, forman un registro no oficial de la invasión rusa.
Tubos de lanzamiento de cohetes se exhiben junto al diario de un oficial de inteligencia ruso; uniformes de militares rusos capturados cuelgan de muros oscurecidos; miles de parches militares —símbolos de orgullo de unidad, desafío y humor negro— cubren tableros de exhibición en un estallido de color.
Para Kilderov, quien soportó 55 días bajo la ocupación rusa en Nova Kakhovka, en el sur de Ucrania, los objetos son evidencia de una guerra que, insiste, no debe ser definida sólo por las narrativas oficiales.
Si bien actualmente se trata de una exposición sólo por invitación, Kilderov planea convertir su colección en un museo que transmita la gravedad de la guerra.
“No quiero que esto se sienta como un museo típico donde caminas por cinco salas con colecciones similares”, afirmó. “Quiero una sala que concentre todo, para que la gente sienta la emoción cuando de repente se encuentre rodeada por estos objetos”.
Desde que Rusia lanzó su invasión a gran escala en febrero de 2022, Kilderov ha reunido artefactos a través de contactos militares, intercambios y recuperaciones personales tras ataques aéreos nocturnos en ciudades ucranianas.
Lo que comenzó en su hogar se convirtió en una densa colección de documentos y pasaportes rusos decomisados, cascos, fragmentos de armas, cuchillos, granadas y equipo de visión nocturna. Sobre su cabeza cuelga un dron señuelo Shahed hecho de espuma de poliestireno.
Entre los objetos más personales se encuentra un celular perforado por metralla que salvó la vida de un soldado, banderas de unidades militares que conmemoran operaciones en el Mar Negro, dibujos de soldados y paquetes de cigarrillos a medio llenar.

Una pintura de cinco metros, titulada “55”, es un laberinto de líneas y símbolos de colores que representan el número de días que pasó bajo la ocupación. Johnson & Johnson deberá pagar 65,5 millones de dólares a mujer con cáncer que usó talco

Tren de alta velocidad mata a 7 elefantes que cruzaban vías en noreste de India

GUWAHATI, India (AP) — Siete elefantes asiáticos salvajes murieron y una cría resultó herida cuando un tren de pasajeros de alta velocidad colisionó con una manada que cruzaba las vías en el estado nororiental de Assam, en India, informaron las autoridades locales el sábado temprano.
El conductor del tren avistó la manada de unos 100 elefantes y utilizó los frenos de emergencia, pero el tren aún así impactó a algunos de los animales, indicó Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, portavoz de Indian Railways, a The Associated Press.
Cinco vagones del tren y la locomotora descarrilaron tras el impacto, pero no hubo víctimas humanas, añadió Sharma.

Oklahoma State baseball commit Jacsen Tucker turns into a basketball gem for Oswego East. ‘A different game.’
Is Oswego East junior Jacsen Tucker a diamond in the rough?
Yes and no.
Tucker, a shortstop for the Wolves in baseball, is definitely a gem on the diamond, having already committed to a scholarship offer from Oklahoma State.
On the basketball court, where he’s listed as a wing but still puts in plenty of time in the post, the 6-foot-4 Tucker is getting better and better.
“Jacsen and Dshaun (Bolden) came up to varsity at the end of last year right before the playoffs,” said Mason Lockett, a DePaul recruit. “Really, this game, Jacsen just showed what he’s about.
“He’s an undersized big man compared to what most guys in that position are, but he works harder than everybody. He’s a great scorer and a great defender.”

Lockett could have thrown in strong rebounder, too. Tucker posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds Friday night in the host Wolves’ 57-37 Southwest Prairie West win over Yorkville.
A 6-foot-5 senior guard, Lockett played his usual prominent role, scoring a game-high 19 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds for Oswego East (7-2, 4-1). Bolden, a 6-4 junior forward, added 16 points and six rebounds.
Tucker confirmed the late-season callup helped prepare him and Bolden for their roles this winter.
“They really overemphasized some things and really coached us in the game of varsity basketball,” Tucker said. “This year, they expect a lot out of us, which is good.

“But at the same time we’re still young. They kind of keep us under their wings so we learn with efficiency.”
Tucker cited the difference in the pace of the game from the lower levels.
“It’s different, that’s for sure,” he said. “You have share the ball and play a team game more.”
Injury and illness, meanwhile, have taken a toll on Yorkville (5-4, 3-2).

Joey Jakstys, a 6-8 sophomore forward, missed the game with an ankle injury. Senior guard Gabe Sanders, who missed a game last week and several days of practice this week with the flu, retuned and scored a team-high nine points.
Braydon Porter, a 6-5 sophomore forward who missed three days of practice this week, added eight points. Nathan Kubin, a 6-3 senior forward, also scored eight points.
“We’re struggling right now trying to get over stuff,” said Yorkville coach John Holakovsky, who was missing two other reserves with the flu.
Oswego East coach Ryan Velasquez also understands the struggles his young players are weathering.
“These guys are learning varsity basketball,” Velasquez said. “Mason’s the only who had a lot of varsity minutes last year.”
Lockett’s growing connection with Tucker was evident. Lockett hooked up with Tucker on a pass for a layup on the first basket of the game and later on a layup that turned into a 3-point play.
That was followed by a layup and a dunk in the third quarter and yet another layup in the fourth.
“I came out here and tried to give everybody the ball and show everyone our team is not just me,” Lockett said. “It’s the other guys as well.”

On top of that, Velasquez has been pleased with Tucker’s growth.
“He’s a physical presence, tremendous athlete and a great kid,” Velasquez said. “At lower levels, though, you may be able to get away with some things you can’t at the varsity level.
“But I love how he gets on the floor for loose balls. He’s still working on some things.”
That goes for the whole team.
“I want to get more assists, not just from Lockett,” Velasquez said. “We want to get hockey assists, you know, when the passer passes to the guy who scores and also gets an assist.
“We hold the ball too much. We need to make sure we get the ball clicking on the offensive end. It doesn’t have to be a hot potato, but a few more passes makes the defense work more.”

Gabe Jensen gets ready to pass torch as Geneva’s point guard. But first, some 3-pointers. ‘Super proud of him.’
Three seasons ago, when Gabe Jensen took over as the starting point guard for Geneva, coach Scott Hennig was just getting to understand all of the facets of the youngster’s game.
Early in that season, Hennig referred to how impressed he was with Jensen’s shooting. Now a senior, Jensen has established himself as a sharpshooter from the outside for the Vikings.
Fast forward to Friday night as Jensen made a pair of 3-pointers in the first minute of the game.
“We needed a hot start,” Jensen said. “We knew since they are rivals it’s going to be a close game no matter how good they are or how good we are. We just had to get hot from the start.”
Jensen’s 3-pointers definitely set the tone, but the host Vikings still had to fend off archrival Batavia all night in capturing a 54-53 DuKane Conference victory in double overtime.
Jensen made six 3-pointers overall and finished with 18 points for Geneva (8-0, 3-0). Nathan Palmer led all scorers with 22 points and hit the winning free throw with seven seconds left.

Joe Reid paced Batavia (2-5, 1-3) with 21 points and sank six 3-pointers of his own. Evan Blankenship and Xavier Justice added nine points apiece.
Hennig is used to developing varsity point guards. The Vikings’ run from Jack McDonald to Nathan Valentine to Mick Lawrence has been continued by the 5-foot-10 Jensen.
“We’ve had a lot of really good ones,” Hennig said, nodding his head. “I put Gabe Jensen up with them — his ability to shoot the ball.
“The thing I love about Gabe is he’s one of the most competitive kids I’ve ever coached. He’s won over 50 games. That’s impressive for a guy his size. I’m just super proud of him.”

Jensen entered the second OT with the same mindset as he had at the start. Batavia erased a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force OT, with each team then making a 3-pointer.
That brought on a second OT, with Jensen coming out and drilling a 3-pointer to set the tone again. The Vikings never trailed from there, although they never pulled away, either.
“When I hit that three, it was a big confidence boost,” Jensen said. “I knew we needed a hot start.”
Keeping that hot streak going all game was a struggle for Jensen, but Dane Farrar had a lot to do with that defensively for the Bulldogs.

“Dane does a lot of good things for us,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “He’s multipositional. He’s arguably our best defender. He’s got a lot of good tools.
“He’s going to end up 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6 and hasn’t shaved yet a day in his life.”
Nazos told Farrar and the rest of the Bulldogs that they couldn’t take a break around the 3-point line when Jensen and Palmer would get the ball.
“You realize with them, the range they have, you have to honor each and every one,” Nazos said. “The way they shoot it, if you mess up once, he’s going to hit it.”

When Jensen took over, Hennig joked how there better be a player in sixth or seventh grade coming down the line. They now have one in freshman Cody Rader, who impacted Friday’s game.
Jensen tries to help Rader continue the legacy and also lets him gain from his own experiences.
“It feels like every shot he takes, it goes in,” Jensen said of Rader. “He’ll learn as he goes on.”
It’s a tradition Hennig is glad was continued by Jensen, with his successor now on the varsity.
“According to Kevin Honn from Glenbard North, this is Point Guard U,” Hennig said. “He’s not wrong.”

Anthony Joshua noquea al YouTuber Jake Paul en 6to asalto y gana pelea en la división de los pesados

Asking Eric: Do I grant son-in-law status to the boyfriend?
Dear Eric: I have two daughters. One is in a long-term marriage with an established career. The other, who has less stable employment, recently moved in with her boyfriend of five years.
I am widowed and elderly. Rather unexpectedly, I find that my income, especially the required minimum distribution from my IRA, exceeds my needs by a substantial amount. So far, the account continues to grow annually by more than the distribution.
Each year, I have been giving the established daughter and her husband each a check. I have been putting money in a retirement account for the other one.
Do I grant son-in-law status to the boyfriend when distributing money? They are in a committed relationship.
The boyfriend is a bit sensitive about money. He’s still struggling to pay off debts from his first marriage. My daughter makes more than he does, and they live in her house. He contributes a set amount financially and does much of the upkeep of the house. He bristles at any suggestion that he is not carrying his own weight financially. If they are going to be a long-term couple, I would like to contribute to a retirement account for him, but don’t want to cause problems.
I don’t feel that I know him well enough to ask.

Dear Gift: This is really thoughtful and quite generous.
So, I hope what I write next doesn’t come across as too curt. If you don’t know the boyfriend well enough to ask him if he’d accept the money, you shouldn’t give it to him. True, you don’t need to know someone to give them money. But, as you point out, it has the potential to cause issues in your daughter’s relationship.
The way to sidestep those issues is communication, but if that’s not possible, the money should stay in your account.
I like to say money talks, but it mumbles sometimes. This is especially true when it comes to inheritances and gifts passed down from one generation to the next. Because you and the boyfriend don’t have a relationship in which you can comfortably talk about money, putting a large amount of money into that relationship is going to cause an issue, if only because you haven’t established a way to talk about it.
What you might do, however, is talk about the situation with your daughter and ask if there are ways you can help her that will benefit the household in general.

Now, a year later, this new councilperson has proven himself to be inept and without even having the basic skillset to do the job at the council meetings.
Basically, it’s become embarrassing even at the last council meeting. For instance, he did not even know how appeals work and kept asking really dumb questions, which revealed further he was not prepared and well-read on this issue.
I called the former council member who pushed for this guy to win a seat, and the former council member had a meltdown at me and was really angry and told me the new council member was doing an excellent job.
Other residents and I are concerned about what we are stuck with. How can we get this resolved as soon as possible?

Dear Resident: Take a look at your council’s by-laws. Find out what recourse residents have for a recall, if any. Perhaps it’s as simple as getting enough signatures on a petition. Perhaps it’s more complicated or not possible. You won’t know what checks and balances are available to you without doing a little digging.
This should be publicly available information. The city council, like every other elected body, works for the people. So, they have a duty to perform their jobs with transparency. If you can’t find the by-laws or the answer to your question on the council’s website, reach out to the secretary of the city council or the president of the city council.

It’s important for every citizen to remember that even though elections might seem byzantine or beyond the reach of regular people, it’s possible to educate yourself and get involved in local, state or national politics at every level, whether as a volunteer, a staffer or a candidate. If something is happening that you’re concerned about, you should contact your elected officials and ask them to advocate on your behalf. If they don’t do the job in a way that’s satisfactory to you, find out what the term limits are and cast your vote for someone else in the next election. That someone can even be yourself.

Anthony Joshua knocks out Jake Paul in 6th round to win heavyweight fight
MIAMI — Anthony Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in the sixth round of their heavyweight fight Friday night.
The two-time heavyweight champion displayed why he is one of the sport’s elite punchers when he dropped the fading Paul twice in the fifth round.
Sensing the YouTuber was finished, Joshua rocked him with a right uppercut early in the sixth. The native of England then floored Paul with a combination to the head.
Although Paul (12-2) reached his feet again, Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) finally crushed Paul’s upset dream when he dropped him a fourth time with a right to the head. Referee Christopher Young counted Paul out at 1:31 of the round in front of a capacity crowd of 19,600 at the Kaseya Center.
With the victory, Joshua now can angle to reclaim the heavyweight title he lost against Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua also has talked about a long-discussed match with countryman and former champion Tyson Fury. However, Fury is currently retired following consecutive losses to Usyk in 2024.
It was Joshua’s first bout since Daniel Dubois knocked him out in five rounds in September 2024.
Joshua methodically established pace against Paul from the opening round as neither fighter engaged early. Midway through the round, Paul threw an overhand right that Joshua blocked with his glove. In the closing seconds, Joshua scored with a right to the head near the ropes.
In the second, Joshua began utilizing his 6-inch reach advantage by leading with a left jab.
Paul scored with a short right to the head early in the fourth. Later in the round, Paul twice fell to the canvas awkwardly as he again attempted to cut distance during close exchanges
Paul weighed 216 pounds and Joshua 243 for the bout.
Paul, 28, who began his boxing career in January 2020, originally had targeted an exhibition match with lightweight champion Gervonta Davis last month in Miami. But Davis encountered legal problems that scrapped the event. Paul quickly pivoted and landed the bout against Joshua in the same venue.
Celebrities in the crowd included golf champion Rory McIlroy, New York Mets slugger Juan Soto, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and retired NFL receivers Michael Irvin and Brandon Marshall.
In an undercard bout between retired UFC champions, 50-year-old Anderson Silva scored a second-round TKO against Tyron Woodley.
