Ethan Vahl builds up to big moment for Oswego, snapping 16-game losing streak to Oswego East. ‘Wanting this.’

Sophomore guard Ethan Vahl has been attending Oswego’s boys basketball games against crosstown rival Oswego East for years.

As a student in grade school, Vahl was in the stands, watching the excitement and rooting on the Panthers.

But there was one big thing.

“I’ve never seen them win,” he said.

Vahl made sure to do something about that Friday night. In front of a packed gym, he scored 29 points and added six steals for host Oswego in a 59-52 Southwest Prairie West win in overtime.

Behind Vahl’s standout performance, the Panthers (10-7, 4-3) snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Wolves. The last time the Panthers prevailed in the rivalry was Feb. 10, 2017, a 70-62 win.

Instead of being in the stands, Vahl was the hero this time on the court. When the game was over, he raced to the stands to greet those in the student section before they stormed the court.

“This was amazing,” Vahl said. “I had a lot of fun with my teammates. We played hard. We’ve been wanting this win for a long time. I’ve been waiting for this win for a long time.

“I’ve wanted this feeling ever since I was a little kid.”

Sophomore forward Cole Jansons tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds for Oswego, including eight points in the fourth quarter and OT. Graham Schwab added 11 points.

DePaul commit Mason Lockett led Oswego East (12-5, 5-2) with 25 points and 10 rebounds.  Dshaun Bolden added 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Vahl actually had a chance to win the game in regulation. His 35-foot shot looked on the mark but didn’t fall. He made up for it during OT by scoring 10 of Oswego’s 14 points.

“We lost to them last year and we really wanted to win this game,” Vahl said.

And Vahl’s play was no surprise to Oswego coach Nick Oraham.

“He’s a special kid,” Oraham said. “I thought that shot in the fourth quarter was going down, but he stepped up and made some big plays when we needed them.

“He’s special for someone who is only 16 years old.”

The 6-foot-11 Jansons is also impressed with his teammate.

“He brings everything to the table,” Jansons said of Vahl. “He’s smart and he’s a great passer. He’s always getting steals on defense. He can rebound. He helps our team a lot.”

Oswego East built a 40-30 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Oswego clawed back. Schwab hit a 3-pointer with 1:40 left and Vahl hit a shot 23 seconds later to tie and send the game into OT.

Jansons confirmed there was no panic when his team was down by double digits.

“We all trusted each other to play the right way,” he said. “Even when the shots weren’t falling, the coach believed in us the whole game.”

Unlike Vahl, who was a basketball fanatic going to games when he was young, Jansons didn’t get into basketball until he was in eighth grade.

But this victory was still a big deal for him.

“I think I was 8 when they last beat East,” Jansons said. “This is a great feeling. I think we can have a dynasty for the next couple of years after a win like this.”

The two rivals will face each other again on Feb. 13 at Oswego East.

Vahl started playing basketball at age 3 as his father, Justin, got him involved. Ethan said his dad was a baseball player at West Aurora but has taught him a lot over the years..

“He’s been my inspiration,” Ethan said of his father. “He’s been teaching me my whole life. Life skills. Basketball skills. Everything.”

Stephen Curry suma 27 puntos y 10 asistencias; Warriors arrollan 137-103 a Kings

Asking Eric: I don’t know where to land during my retirement years

Dear Eric: I’m 61, widowed, and still work full time as a registered nurse in a very busy hospice house.

I lost my husband four years ago, and since then went through a medical scare twice, diagnosed with cirrhosis, sleep apnea and chronic anxiety, have bought and sold two homes, purchased a new car and created significant credit card debt twice.

When I retire, I won’t be able to afford my house, so I will need to move (again). I understand and admit these poor financial decisions were possibly my way of dealing with grief, but now I am at a crossroads where I have an opportunity to retire next year and finally be able to decide how and where I spend my time.

You see, during my 36 years of marriage, we moved 13 times. I really don’t have roots.

My problem is that I don’t know where to land during my retirement years. How do I go about figuring this out? Because of my medical issues, sometimes I need help and probably should live near my family. But who? I can’t wrap my head around this. But I need to decide soon because I will need to move when I sell my current home next summer.

I think I’m afraid to make another financial mistake. I also fear that this decision will be somehow final. What are your thoughts?

– The Next Move

Dear Move: The first thing you’ll want to do is talk to a financial adviser, who can review your assets and debts and give you a concrete plan that will keep you financially solvent and help you get some peace of mind. Medical issues and money woes can create a fog of anxiety that obscures the path forward. It’s hard to make wise decisions or to feel confident you haven’t made a mistake.

If you don’t know where to look for a financial adviser, ask friends or relatives if they work with someone they trust, or reach out to the National Association of Professional Financial Advisors (napfa.org). Your local senior center or public library will also likely have financial counseling resources available.

Also, talk to your family members about the upcoming decision and the options you’re weighing. They’ll be able to give you insight about the places they live, and their capacity for showing up for you when needed. This will give you a sense of what your post-retirement life can look like and give you better information to help you make your decision. Talk to your doctors, as well. If there’s specialized care you need, they’ll be able to advise you on how to connect with it in other areas.

Lastly, talk to friends in retirement communities about their experiences. You may find that one of those is an attractive and affordable option.

You don’t have to make these decisions on your own; indeed, it’s wiser not to. Keep asking for more information until you feel more surefooted. I understand that perhaps you feel that you’re backed into a corner right now. But I want to assure you that you can find a next chapter that brings you happiness and gives you a sense of freedom.

Dear Eric: This is in reference to the letter about giving gifts to adults from “Feeling Bah-humbug” who wrote: “My significant other and I are at the stage in life where we really do not need more ‘stuff’ and would rather not deal with gifts that are generic at best and usually are re-gifted promptly via donation or gift-economy communities.”

We had the same problem. Solved it! Instead of buying gifts, we determined a monetary amount we probably would spend on a gift. We picked $50. Could be any amount.

Every year one person was in charge of collecting the money from everyone. That person donated that amount to their favorite charity. Next year, the next person collected the money and donated it to their favorite charity. Worked great!

– Regifting

Dear Regifting: What I love most about this solution, in addition to giving a meaningful pot of money to a charity, is that it gives your family the chance to learn about each other through what causes you care about.

I’d even suggest that the person who is in charge of collecting the money send out a card or letter explaining what the charity does, why that work is personally meaningful, and how the money will impact the work. It’s an added step, but one of the aims of giving and receiving gifts is that it helps us feel closer to those that we love.

Jaden Matthews-Thomas develops winning formula for West Aurora. Decisive combo? ‘More confidence, more energy.’

West Aurora’s Jaden Matthews-Thomas has been hitting his stride in the past few games. And the reason is fairly simple, according to coach Mike Fowler.

Fowler stresses that he wants his guys to play to their strengths and accentuate them. In the case of Matthews-Thomas, that’s defensive intensity, getting to the basket and playing off two feet.

“I’m just going out here trying to showcase my skills, show what I can do and prove I can stay on the court,” he said. “(Fowler) always preaches leaning into your strengths, doing what’s working.

“I have more confidence, more energy.”

Matthews-Thomas displayed that confidence and energy on the big stage Friday night.

The junior guard scored 20 points — including a couple of highlight-reel dunks — as host West Aurora dominated crosstown rival East Aurora during an 80-52 Upstate Eight West victory.

Travis Brown led all scorers with 22 points for West Aurora (9-8, 5-1). Jordan Weeks added 12 points off the bench. Casston Cross paced East Aurora (8-9, 4-2) with 15 points.

Fowler, who is impressed with how Matthews-Thomas has come on lately, knows that energy and production will be a big key for the Blackhawks moving forward.

“Sometimes, they have to understand their strengths,” Fowler said. “I think he’s starting to come along and play to his strengths and what he has success with. That’s points in the paint and being aggressive on both ends of the floor.

“I like where he’s going and I like where we’re going as a team.”

West Aurora fell behind 8-2 early in the game, but a layup from Matthews-Thomas kickstarted an 11-0 run the gave the Blackhawks a 13-8 lead and they never trailed again.

“They got off to a good start,” Fowler said of East Aurora. “Once we figured out what they were trying to do and their plan of attack, our boys figured it out and ran off from there.

“I’m proud of the way they played defensively. A lot of people in that locker room made plays.”

Nobody made more memorable plays than Matthews-Thomas, however.

A thunderous dunk off a steal in the second quarter gave the Blackhawks their first double-digit lead at 26-15. He then scored their final eight points of the first half for a 42-26 lead at halftime.

Matthews-Thomas wasn’t done making memories, either. With 1:58 left in the third quarter, he unleashed a vicious dunk. It not only gave the Blackhawks a 62-34 lead, it took the lid off the gym.

“It’s the East-West game,” Fowler said. “You have to have some moments like that. It gets the crowd going, especially in a rivalry. If you can get those, it really gets your team ready to go.

“He gives us a lot. I’m proud of his effort.”

Nobody had a better view of that dunk than Brown. After all, he was calling for an alley-oop before Matthews-Thomas decided to take matters into his own hands.

“I was calling for the oop,” Brown said. “He went to go dunk on somebody and he did it. It was very exciting. It’s actually the first time he’s done it in a game, second time I’ve seen him do it.”

His emergence makes things easier for Brown, who is West Aurora’s leading scorer.

“It’s going to help us a lot,” Brown said. “Another person with some energy and some confidence is going to bring a lot to us. For me, it takes pressure off of me. It feels great.

“The double can’t come because we have another threat on the team.”

Matthews-Thomas is enjoying coming into his own, especially because he knows what his explosive plays bring to the team.

“I feel like it brings us energy and turns us all up,” Matthews-Thomas said. “I’m definitely trying to make a name for myself.”
