Judge rules feds in Minneapolis immigration operation can’t detain or tear gas peaceful protesters
MINNEAPOLIS — Federal officers in the Minneapolis-area participating in its largest recent U.S. immigration enforcement operation can’t detain or tear gas peaceful protesters, a U.S. judge in Minnesota ruled Friday.
U.S. District Judge Kate Menendez ruled in a case filed in December on behalf of six Minnesota activists.
Thousands of people have been observing the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol officers enforcing the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area since early December.
The activists in the case are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota, which says government officers are violating the constitutional rights of Twin Cities residents.
Government attorneys argued that the officers have been acting within their legal authority to enforce immigration laws and protect themselves.

Justice Department says members of Congress can’t intervene in release of Epstein files
NEW YORK — Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor said Friday that a judge lacks the authority to appoint a neutral expert to oversee the public release of documents in the sex trafficking probe of financier Jeffrey Epstein and British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.
Judge Paul A. Engelmayer was told in a letter signed by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton that he must reject a request this week by the congressional cosponsors of the Epstein Files Transparency Act to appoint a neutral expert.
U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, and Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, say they have “urgent and grave concerns” about the slow release of only a small number of millions of documents that began last month.
In a filing to the judge they said they believed “criminal violations have taken place” in the release process.
Clayton, though, said Khanna and Massie do not have standing with the court that would allow them to seek the “extraordinary” relief of the appointment of a special master and independent monitor.
Engelmayer “lacks the authority” to grant such a request, he said, particularly because the congressional representatives who made the request are not parties to the criminal case that led to Maxwell’s December 2021 sex trafficking conviction and subsequent 20-year prison sentence for recruiting girls and women for Epstein to abuse and aiding the abuse.
Khanna said Clayton’s response “misconstrued” the intent of their request.
“We are informing the Court of serious misconduct by the Department of Justice that requires a remedy, one we believe this Court has the authority to provide, and which victims themselves have requested,” Khanna said in a statement.
“Our purpose is to ensure that DOJ complies with its representations to the Court and with its legal obligations under our law,” he added.
Epstein died in a federal jail in New York City in August 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. The death was ruled a suicide.
The Justice Department expects to update the court “again shortly” regarding its progress in turning over documents from the Epstein and Maxwell investigative files, Clayton said in the letter.
The Justice Department has said the files’ release was slowed by redactions required to protect the identities of abuse victims.
In their letter, Khanna and Massie wrote that the Department of Justice’s release of only 12,000 documents out of more than 2 million documents being reviewed was a “flagrant violation” of the law’s release requirements and had caused “serious trauma to survivors.”
“Put simply, the DOJ cannot be trusted with making mandatory disclosures under the Act,” the congressmen said as they asked for the appointment of an independent monitor to ensure all documents and electronically stored information are immediately made public.
They also recommended that a court-appointed monitor be given authority to prepare reports about the true nature and extent of the document production and whether improper redactions or conduct have taken place.

After Nick Shirley’s exposé on Somali fraud in Minneapolis, citizen journalists across the country began investigating where their tax dollars are going in Democratic run states. What followed has been a wave of DOGE-style efforts by citizen journalists to root out left-wing corruption, and what they are uncovering is alarming, particularly in California.
The focus is no longer limited to Minnesota and California, but extends across blue states where local left-wing leaders, posing as responsible stewards, are often little more than activists with exceptional talent to loot local, city, state, and even federal coffers.
The latest example of why a DOGE revival at the state level is urgently needed comes from Maryland, a one-party rule state controlled by Democratic kings and queens, where the word accountability doesn’t exist, and the state’s financial profile is rapidly deteriorating, placing increasing financial strains on working-class households as taxes soar amid a deficit crisis.
Fox Baltimore reporter Patrick Hauf dropped a bombshell report this week, revealing that top leaders in Baltimore City do not actually know how many taxpayer dollars are being funneled into the nonprofit universe.
Hauf’s investigative team asked Baltimore City Council members, along with the mayor and comptroller, whether they track nonprofit funding. None provided a precise figure or centralized data.
“None of them provided a precise measure. Some argued that the city government has thorough oversight of taxpayer funds, while others said greater oversight and transparency would be beneficial,” the report wrote.
Hauf’s reporting comes after a similar report of how Maryland state leaders were unable to specify how much taxpayer money they sent to nonprofits.
The pattern of behavior from city leaders to state officials is that accountability doesn’t exist, and why should it when the state is controlled by Democratic Party kings and queens?
The think tank Urban Institute estimated that Maryland nonprofits received more than $6 billion in federal, state, and local grants in 2021. ProPublica data Nonprofit Explorer shows Maryland nonprofits reported $95 billion in revenue in 2024, including executive compensation as high as $7.1 million.
Here are the responses when Hauf’s team asked City Council members, along with the mayor and comptroller, how much taxpayer money is being funneled into nonprofits:
City Council responses:
Zach Blanchard said his office does not track nonprofit funding and doubts other council members do, though he expressed interest in increased disclosure for larger nonprofits.
Mark Conway supported nonprofits but said there is no centralized, public-facing system showing how much public funding flows to nonprofits or what outcomes it produces.
Odette Ramos pointed to oversight hearings, while John Bullock and Jermaine Jones declined interviews.
Mayor and comptroller:
Mayor Brandon Scott and Bill Henry said spending is publicly available through the Baltimore City Board of Estimates dashboard.
The dashboard does not identify whether recipients are nonprofits or organize spending by district.
Both offices acknowledged that greater transparency would be welcome, while maintaining existing oversight requirements.
Fox Baltimore reported earlier this month that the Baltimore City Health Department funneled more than $60 million in federal funds since 2022 to Connections Thru Life, a nonprofit that has not completed required audits and shares office space with a for-profit firm led by the same individual.
Meanwhile, working-class Marylanders are furious with Democratic kings and queens who appear to be looting taxpayers while simultaneously raising taxes and plunging the state into a deficit crisis. On top of that, backfiring green energy policies have collided with surging data-center power demand, sparking a power-bill crisis in the state that is financially crushing working-class households.
Growing anger.
The state’s fiscal mess is the byproduct of one-party rule. Poor stewardship has sent Gov. Moore’s polling numbers sliding, a rare sight for a Democrat in the deep-blue state.

Mother of Elon Musk’s child sues his AI company over sexual deepfake images created by Grok
The mother of one of Elon Musk’s children is suing his AI company, saying its Grok chatbot allowed users to generate sexually exploitive deepfake images of her that have caused her humiliation and emotional distress.
Ashley St. Clair, 27, who describes herself as a writer and political strategist, alleges in a lawsuit filed Thursday in New York City against xAI that the images have included a photo of her fully dressed at age 14 that was altered to show her in a bikini, and others showing her as an adult in sexualized positions and wearing a bikini with swastikas. St. Clair is Jewish. Grok is on Musk’s social media platform X.
Lawyers for xAI did not immediately return emails seeking comment Friday. On Wednesday, following global backlash over sexualized images of women and children, X announced that Grok would no longer be able to edit photos to portray real people in revealing clothing, in places where that is illegal.
Asked about the lawsuit and its allegations, xAI replied only “Legacy Media Lies” in an email to The Associated Press.
St. Clair said she reported the deepfakes to X after they began appearing last year and asked that they be removed. She said the platform first replied that the images did not violate its policies. Then it promised to not allow images of her to be used or altered without her consent, she said.
St. Clair said the social platform then retaliated against her by removing her premium X subscription and verification checkmark, not allowing her to make money from her account, which has 1 million followers, and continuing to allow degrading fake images of her.
“I have suffered and continue to suffer serious pain and mental distress as a result of xAI’s role in creating and distributing these digitally altered images of me,” she said in a document attached to the lawsuit. “I am humiliated and feel like this nightmare will never stop so long as Grok continues to generate these images of me.”
She also said she lives in fear of the people who view the deepfakes of her.
St. Clair is the mother of Musk’s 16-month-old son, Romulus. She lives in New York City, where she filed the lawsuit in state Supreme Court. She is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages for alleged infliction of emotional distress and other claims, as well as court orders immediately barring xAI from allowing more deepfakes of her.
Later Thursday, lawyers for xAI transferred the lawsuit to federal court in Manhattan, asking a judge to hear the case there. And the same day, xAI also countersued St. Clair in federal court in the Northern District of Texas, alleging she violated the terms of her xAI user agreement that requires lawsuits against the company be filed in federal court in Texas. It is seeking an undisclosed money judgment against her.
X is based in Texas, where Musk owns a home and his electric automaker Tesla in headquartered in Austin.
Carrie Goldberg, a lawyer for St. Clair, called the countersuit a “jolting” move that she had never seen by a defendant before.
“Ms. St. Clair will be vigorously defending her forum in New York,” Goldberg said in a statement. “But frankly, any jurisdiction will recognize the gravamen of Ms. St. Clair’s claims — that by manufacturing nonconsensual sexually explicit images of girls and women, xAI is a public nuisance and a not reasonably safe product.”
In its announcement on Wednesday, X said it was implementing other safeguards on Grok including limiting image creation and editing to paid accounts, which it said would improve accountability. It said it had zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation, nonconsensual nudity and unwanted sexual content, and it would immediately remove such content and report accounts involved in child sex abuse materials to law enforcement.

Edward Cabrera knows his new in-season home might require a little adjustment from what he’s used to in the majors.
Cabrera, acquired from the Miami Marlins earlier this month, had his first chance to meet his new teammates and coaches Friday at the Cubs Convention — and with it a taste of Chicago’s wintry weather, to which the 27-year-old wryly noted, “It’s super cold.” Cabrera is looking forward to his opportunity with the Cubs.
“I’ll go out there and give them my 100% to reach the end goal, which is to win,” he said Friday through an interpreter.

The Cubs had their sights on hard-throwing right-hander since last offseason and again in July at the trade deadline, neither time being able to align with Miami on a trade.
“He’s been a guy that has been a favorite of some of our pitching infrastructure guys for a long time,” team President Jed Hoyer said Friday at the Sheraton Grand Chicago. “Obviously, great stuff. Feels like he’s a guy that could be just kind of scratching the surface of what he can do. And so, that was a big part of it: It’s a guy with the analytics matched up, the age matched up, the service time matched up, and the fact that there’s some guys that had conviction on him for a long time.”
The Cubs experienced last year the value of having quality starting pitching depth, which helped them navigate injuries to Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon. They fully expect to need nine or 10 starters to again get through the season, though Cabrera possesses the kind of stuff that can be a separator in the league.
“This is a pitcher that’s kind of coming into his best years,” manager Craig Counsell said Friday. “He’s talented. He’s put innings under his belt, which is just the experience. He’s getting better and I think he’s primed, in Year 5 in the major leagues, to improve and kind of take another step forward, which we think makes him a very good starting pitcher.”
Cabrera’s new teammates know they are getting a pitcher with high upside and a chance to be a difference-maker in the rotation.
“Edward’s got amazing talent,” Matthew Boyd said. “It was really cool, you take notice of guys around the league, you saw the season he was having last year and it was like, ‘Man, that’s really impressive.’ Can’t speak highly enough about our coaching staff and development and whatnot, they helped me enormously. I just think we’ve got one of the top rotations in the league, and he’s going to help us win ballgames.”
Cabrera’s addition doesn’t come without risk, of course. The Cubs traded their top prospect, Owen Caissie, who was in line to get at-bats in their designated hitter role or in the corner outfield if there were injuries. Cabrera’s health history creates a big question of how durable he can be over a full season. He has thrown more than 100 innings in a big-league season just once, coming last year when he threw 137 2/3 innings in 26 starts.

Cabrera has landed on the injured list seven times since 2021, his first big-league season with the Marlins. Five were ailments to either his right shoulder or elbow. He admitted that in the past, his injuries mentally affected him.
“I’m at the point where it doesn’t anymore,” Cabrera said. “I go out there and I give it the best of my ability, I give it my all every time I go out there and pitch.”
Hoyer and the Cubs believe Cabrera is a worthwhile gamble.
“Guys throw really hard now, their stuff is amazing,” Hoyer said. “Guys get hurt more often. It’s kind of part of the game. So you always weigh that risk, but you also realize that with increased stuff comes that risk, and it’s sort of part of the game too. You have to have really good pitching to win, and you also have to have a lot of pitching to win.”

The origin of the chaos appears to be mostly manufactured and began hours after the legal observer was shot and killed last Wednesday:
Democrats are using the manufactured chaos, think of it as George Floyd 2.0, in an attempt to sway public opinion polls about Trump’s deportation policies. As Trump strips power from Democrats and the party’s unhinged left watches its illegal alien voter bloc get deported, those with their backs against the wall increasingly see violence as the only remaining option. Just wait until spring.

It was once such a beautiful city, but now it has been transformed into a war zone. For more than a decade, I have been relentlessly warning my readers that civil unrest would be one of the core elements of the coming “perfect storm”, and now we are literally watching violent clashes between radical leftists and federal authorities play out right in front of our eyes. In fact, it is getting so bad that President Trump is threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act. That hasn’t happened since the Los Angeles riots of 1992. As the rioters were destroying and looting federal vehicles, the police just stood by and did nothing.
Of course the reason why they didn’t intervene is because that is what their leaders are instructing them to do.
In remarks that she just made to the press, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act “spoke very loud and clear to Democrats across this country”…

So I expect things to get really crazy in the months ahead.
If Trump actually invokes the Insurrection Act, that will allow him to deploy active duty soldiers to Minneapolis…
The president would have fairly broad authority under the law, Gene Rossi, a former federal prosecutor, told Newsweek on Thursday.
“The punchline is this. Under the Insurrection Act, President Trump and any president has broad power to invoke that act, which is an extraordinary step,” he said. “What it means is that the president can employ active duty soldiers to assist state and local authorities in executing the federal laws.”
In Minnesota, ICE is “executing, in their mind, the immigration laws in terms of arresting and detaining people who are here without proper documentation,” Rossi said. Trump would have broad authority to determine whether laws cannot be effectively executed without invoking the Insurrection Act, he said.
If troops are deployed in the streets, will far left radicals stop harassing ICE?
Of course not.
Instead, there would probably be even more violent confrontations like the one that we just witnessed on Wednesday evening…
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent is in the hospital after being ambushed during an attempt to arrest a Venezuelan national in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The agent was ambushed by two people while attempting to conduct a traffic stop on an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, DHS said, adding that the agent fired his gun during the alleged attack because he was “fearing for his life and safety.”
One Venezuelan suspect was shot but is reported to be stable and is now in custody, DHS said.
The radical left has drawn a line in the sand.
They are going to resist ICE no matter how much the Trump administration escalates matters.
And so now our society stands at a very dangerous tipping point.

At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022.
In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. The subject then fled on foot.
The law enforcement officer caught up to the subject on foot and attempted to apprehend him when the subject began to resist and violently assault the officer. While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.
As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick.
Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.
All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside.
The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody.
This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers.
Their hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end. Federal law enforcement officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers.
It would help if Democrats would tell their constituents to calm down and leave federal law enforcement officers alone.
But that isn’t happening.
In fact, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is calling on the citizens of his state to “resist” the “occupation” that he believes is currently taking place…
Folks, I know it’s scary, and I know it’s absurd that we all have to be defending law and order, justice, and humanity while also caring for our families and trying to do our jobs. So tonight, let me say once again to Donald Trump and Christine Noem: End this occupation, you’ve done enough.

Donald Trump wants this chaos. He wants confusion, and yes, he wants more violence on our streets. We cannot give him what he wants. We can, we must, protest loudly, urgently, but also peacefully.
All across Minnesota, people are learning about opportunities, not just to resist, but to help people who are in danger. Thousands and thousands of our fellow Minnesotans are going to be relying on mutual aid in the days and weeks to come, and they need our support.
Tim Walz was a member of the National Guard for 24 years.
When he uses military terminology, he knows exactly what he is doing.
On the other side, Stephen Miller is warning that federal officials are in the process of “identifying, disrupting and dismantling the insurgent networks” that are causing so much chaos in Minnesota…
Stephen Miller, a top White House official, said Tuesday evening that federal law enforcement now has the resources to protect its officers and begin the work of “identifying, disrupting and dismantling the insurgent networks” hampering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota.
That sounds very similar to the terminology that many of our politicians would use regarding anti-insurgent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan under previous administrations.
But even if the violent radicals in Minnesota are successfully suppressed, more will just pop up elsewhere.
Personally, I believe that this is just the beginning of an enormous wave of civil unrest.
And if a major war erupts in the Middle East, that will just add more fuel to the fire.
This year is already off to such a crazy start.
And we are only halfway through the first month.
Unfortunately, I believe that the rest of the year will be even more insane.

Justice Department investigating whether Minnesota’s Tim Walz and Jacob Frey impeded immigration enforcement
MINNEAPOLIS — The Justice Department is investigating whether Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have impeded federal immigration enforcement through public statements they have made, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The investigation focused on potential violation of a conspiracy statute, the people said.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss a pending investigation by name.
CBS News first reported the investigation.
In response to reports of the investigation, Walz said in a statement: “Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system and threatening political opponents is a dangerous, authoritarian tactic.”
Walz’s office said it has not received any notice of an investigation.
“This is an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, our local law enforcement, and our residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our streets,” Frey said in a statement. “I will not be intimidated. My focus will remain where it’s always been: keeping our city safe.
The investigation comes during a weekslong immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and St. Paul that the Department of Homeland Security has called its largest enforcement operation, resulting in more than 2,500 arrests.
The operation has become more confrontational since the fatal shooting of Renee Good on Jan. 7. State and local officials have repeatedly told protesters to remain peaceful.
State calls for peaceful protests
State authorities, meanwhile, had a message for any weekend protests against the Trump administration’s unprecedented immigration sweep in the Twin Cities: avoid confrontation.
“While peaceful expression is protected, any actions that harm people, destroy property or jeopardize public safety will not be tolerated,” said Commissioner Bob Jacobson of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
His comments came after President Donald Trump backed off a bit from his threat a day earlier to invoke an 1807 law, the Insurrection Act, to send troops to suppress demonstrations.
“I don’t think there’s any reason right now to use it, but if I needed it, I’d use it,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.
Detention whiplash
A Liberian man who has been shuttled in and out of custody since immigration agents broke down his door with a battering ram was released again Friday, hours after a routine check-in with authorities led to his second arrest.
The dramatic initial arrest of Garrison Gibson last weekend was captured on video. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Bryan ruled the arrest unlawful Thursday and freed him, but Gibson was detained again Friday when he appeared at an immigration office.
A few hours later, Gibson was free again, attorney Marc Prokosch said.
“In the words of my client, he said that somebody at ICE said they bleeped up and so they re-released him this afternoon and so he’s out of custody,” Prokosch said, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Gibson, 37, who fled the civil war in his West African home country as a child, had been ordered removed from the U.S., apparently because of a 2008 drug conviction that was later dismissed. He has remained in the country legally under what’s known as an order of supervision, Prokosch said, and complied with the requirement that he meet regularly with immigration authorities.
In his Thursday order, the judge agreed that officials violated regulations by not giving Gibson enough notice that his supervision status had been revoked. Prokosch said he was told by ICE that they are “now going through their proper channels” to revoke the order.
Native Americans urged to carry IDs
Meanwhile, tribal leaders and Native American rights organizations are advising anyone with a tribal ID to carry it with them when out in public in case they are approached by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
Native Americans across the U.S. have reported being stopped or detained by ICE, and tribal leaders are asking members to report these contacts.
Ben Barnes, chief of the Shawnee Tribe in Oklahoma and chair of the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma, called the reports “deeply concerning”.
Organizers in Minneapolis have set up application booths in the city to assist people needing a tribal ID.
Democratic members of Congress held a local meeting Friday to hear from people who say they’ve had aggressive encounters with immigration agents. St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, who is Hmong American, said people are walking around with their passports in case they are challenged, and she has received reports of ICE agents going from door to door “asking where the Asian people live.” Thousands of Hmong people, largely from the Southeast Asian nation of Laos, have settled in the United States since the 1970s.
911 caller: Good was shot ‘point blank’
Minneapolis authorities released police and fire dispatch logs and transcripts of 911 calls, all related to the fatal shooting of Good. Firefighters found what appeared to be two gunshot wounds in her right chest, one in her left forearm and a possible gunshot wound on the left side of her head, records show.
“They shot her, like, cause she wouldn’t open her car door,” a caller said. “Point blank range in her car.”
Good, 37, was at the wheel of her Honda Pilot, which was partially blocking a street. Video showed an officer approached the SUV, demanded that she open the door and grabbed the handle.
Good began to pull forward and turned the vehicle’s wheel to the right. Another ICE officer, Jonathan Ross, pulled his gun and fired at close range, jumping back as the SUV moved past him. DHS claims the agent shot Good in self-defense.
Arrest in FBI vehicle incident
FBI Director Kash Patel said at least one person has been arrested for stealing property from an FBI vehicle in Minneapolis. The SUV was among government vehicles whose windows were broken Wednesday evening. Attorney General Pam Bondi said body armor and weapons were stolen.
The destruction occurred when agents were responding to a shooting during an immigration arrest. Trump subsequently said on social media that he would invoke the Insurrection Act if Minnesota officials don’t stop the “professional agitators and insurrectionists” there.
Minnesota’s attorney general responded by saying he would sue if the president acts.
