Lake Station, New Chicago explore fire territory
The city of Lake Station and town of New Chicago are considering the formation of the East Lake Fire Protection Territory with Lake Station’s volunteer fire department providing fire and ambulance service.
Data from the municipalities’ financial advisor shows the tax impact could fall harder on Lake Station and River Forest school districts than on most property owners whose bills have already reached the circuit breaker and can’t go higher.
A series of public hearings will be held in the coming months by both municipalities to gather public feedback on the proposal supported by a new uniform tax paid by residents and taxing units in each community.
The New Chicago Town Council held its first public hearing on Wednesday. The Lake Station City Council will hold a public hearing during its 7 p.m. meeting on Jan. 22.
The fire district proposal comes as a new state property tax reform law claws back revenue from schools and local governments, making dollars difficult to replace.
The new fire territory would have a proposed operating budget of $2,590,015 in its first year and a proposed tax levy of $1,930,015. Its equipment replacement levy would be $380,323 with a levy of $170,323, totaling $2,100,338.
Daniel Dalton, financial adviser with Cender Dalton Municipal Advisors in Valparaiso, said the rest of the revenue, or about $490,000, would come from recouping fees for ambulance service.
The first-year tax rate would be 0.3773 cents per $100 assessed valuation and the equipment replacement tax rate would be $0.0333, or a merged rate of about 0.41 cents per $100 assessed valuation.
Numbers were being reviewed for the taxing units with the total loss estimated at about $87,000, said Dalton.
The impact of SEA 1 – the property tax reform law – left New Chicago unable to finance its volunteer fire department, according to Town Manager Sue Pelfrey. In addition, she said New Chicago couldn’t afford the ambulance contract fee raised last year by the city of Hobart.
Pelfrey said the town considered forming a fire district with Lake County, but it already has one with Calumet Township.
“We’re between a rock and a hard place,” she said.
Dalton said several overlapping taxing units contribute to tax bills hitting the circuit breaker cap.
At Wednesday’s hearing, Dalton said the fire district could improve service times and attract more trained staff. He said the district would staff two full-time ambulances, requiring four additional staff members.
Firefighters in both fire departments would remain as volunteers.
River Forest Superintendent Kevin Trezak questioned the accuracy of the tax numbers. His district’s advisors, Policy Analytics and Baker Tilly, provided different estimates, he said.
Trezak said the impact of SEA 1 has reduced money in the district’s operating fund.
“I don’t want to put the schools’ needs ahead of the town’s, but I have to represent them,” he said.
“This is going to have an impact, not only on schools but every governing unit,” said Lake Station Superintendent Thomas Cripliver.
“There’s more assessed valuation coming from Lake Station so it will have a greater impact. We also understand the need for safety. That has to be No. 1,” he said.
New Chicago has a population of about 2,000 people within one square mile. Its boundary on the east is Lake Station, which has a population of about 13,000.

Jackson Square redevelopment in La Grange prompts call for zoning process change
In the wake of the discussions leading up to the La Grange Village Board’s move to allow the demolition of the historic Jackson Square Antique Mall building and replace it with a large condominium building, a resident wants changes to the administrative process that facilitated the move.
But plans brought to the village’s Plan Commission by longtime La Grange resident Jonathon Robinson to codify changes to La Grange village code regarding planned unit developments were largely rejected at its Jan. 13 meeting.
Robinson’s frustrations with standing procedures are a result of the recently-approved 5-story, 39-unit condo development at 112 E. Burlington Ave., which will be erected next to his single-family residence. Other neighbors of the development also have voiced their concerns at recent Village Board meetings.
“Everything about that 112 Burlington project ran the wrong way,” Robinson said. “Everything fell against the neighbors in that process. … I can’t explain enough that nothing fell our way, nothing was anywhere close to what it should’ve been.”
Among Robinson’s proposals were calls for Plan Commission public hearings to be recorded and broadcast live, with the recordings archived and made available for 10 years on the village’s website. He said planned developments next to single family residences should be restricted to three stories “unless there was a 40-foot landscape buffer with no building or paving improvements and with a minimum of two rows of trees planted.”
He also said developers should be compelled to meet with immediate neighbors of a project.

Village officials opposed the changes.
“Staff does not recommend approval of the amendments as presented,” village planner Kevin Quinn said. “None of the four amendments are common among peer, neighboring communities.”
But some of Robinson’s proposals drew some positive feedback from Commissioners, although they balked at making them mandatory for any development, only promising to revisit the issues in the future.
But the height restriction proposal and one that would stop developments that “in any way adversely affects a directly adjoining property … that is a single-family detached dwelling” were voted down unanimously, with commissioners repeatedly indicating they would be unduly restrictive.
“This would open us up to legal problems,” Commissioner Jeff Hoffenberg said of the proposal which contained the language about adverse affects. “It changes it from a consideration of the totality of the planned development to now we can’t ever do it (make changes) … the ramifications of this would be very problematic.”
But Robinson wasn’t alone in his call for changes to the process.
“I don’t think this is a dead issue,” resident John Pluto told the Commissioners. “I think there should be some protections about (high) stories next to residential. You guys can protect them too. I can understand wanting a development … there’s places that need help.”
But others, like architect Kurt Volkman, were adamantly against the proposals.
He said that the proposals could almost completely prevent future planned developments in the village, saying “I urge you,” not to approve them.

Despite the commission not giving the proposals a positive recommendation, Robinson still has the option of taking the proposals to the Village Board, which retains the ultimate say on the matter.
Contacted after the meeting, Robinson said he would take the two proposed changes voted down to the full La Grange Board of Trustees.

President Trump says 8 European countries will be charged a 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland
NUUK, Greenland — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would charge a 10% import tax starting in February on goods from eight European nations because of their opposition to American control of Greenland.
Trump said in a social media post that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would face the tariff and that it would climb to 25% on June 1 if a deal is not in place for “the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the United States.
The threat of tariffs was a drastic and potentially dangerous escalation of a showdown between Trump and NATO allies, further straining an alliance that dates to 1949 and provides a collective degree of security to Europe and North America. The Republican president has repeatedly tried to use trade penalties to bend allies and rivals alike to his will, generating investment commitments from some nations and pushback from others such as China, Brazil and India.
It was unclear how Trump could impose the tariffs under U.S. law, though he could cite economic emergency powers that are currently subject to a U.S. Supreme Court challenge.
Trump said in his Truth Social post that his tariffs were retaliation for recent trips to Greenland by representatives from Britain, the Netherlands and Finland and for general opposition to his efforts to purchase the semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. He has Greenland is essential for the “Golden Dome” missile defense system for the U.S., and has argued that Russia and China might try to take over the island.
Resistance has steadily built in Europe to Trump’s ambitions, even as several countries on the continent agreed to his 15% tariffs last year in order to preserve an economic and security relationship with Washington.
Earlier Saturday, hundreds of people in Greenland’s capital braved near-freezing temperatures, rain and icy streets to march in a rally in support of their own self-governance.
The Greenlanders waved their red-and-white national flags and listened to traditional songs as they walked through Nuuk’s small downtown. Some carried signs with messages like “We shape our future,” “Greenland is not for sale” and “Greenland is already GREAT.” They were joined by thousands of others in rallies across the Danish kingdom.
The rallies occurred hours after a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation in Copenhagen sought to reassure Denmark and Greenland of their support.
U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said the current rhetoric around Greenland was causing concern across the Danish kingdom and that he wanted to de-escalate the situation.
“I hope that the people of the Kingdom of Denmark do not abandon their faith in the American people,” he said in Copenhagen, adding that the U.S. has respect for Denmark and NATO “for all we’ve done together.”
NATO training exercises
Danish Maj. Gen. Søren Andersen, leader of the Joint Arctic Command, told The Associated Press that Denmark doesn’t expect the U.S. military to attack Greenland, or any other NATO ally, and that European troops were recently deployed to Nuuk for Arctic defense training.
He said that the goal isn’t to send a message to the Trump administration, even through the White House hasn’t ruled out taking the territory by force.
“I will not go into the political part, but I will say that I would never expect a NATO country to attack another NATO country,” he told the AP on Saturday aboard a Danish military vessel docked in Nuuk. “For us, for me, it’s not about signaling. It is actually about training military units, working together with allies.”
The Danish military organized a planning meeting Friday in Greenland with NATO allies, including the U.S., to discuss Arctic security on the alliance’s northern flank in the face of a potential Russian threat. The Americans were also invited to participate in Operation Arctic Endurance in Greenland in the coming days, Andersen said.
In his 2½ years as a commander in Greenland, Andersen said that he hasn’t seen any Chinese or Russian combat vessels or warships, despite Trump saying that they were off the island’s coast.
But in the unlikely event of American troops using force on Danish soil, Andersen confirmed a Cold War-era law governing Danish rules of engagement.
“But you are right that it is Danish law that a Danish soldier, if attacked, has the obligation to fight back,” he said.
‘Important for the whole world’
Thousands of people marched through Copenhagen, many of them carrying Greenland’s flag. Others held signs with slogans like “Make America Smart Again” and “Hands Off.”
“This is important for the whole world,” Danish protester Elise Riechie told the AP as she held Danish and Greenlandic flags. “There are many small countries. None of them are for sale.”
Trump has sought to justify his calls for a U.S. takeover by repeatedly saying that China and Russia have their own designs on Greenland, which holds vast untapped reserves of critical minerals.
“There are no current security threats to Greenland,” Coons said.
Trump has insisted for months that the U.S. should control Greenland, and said earlier this week that anything less than the Arctic island being in U.S. hands would be “unacceptable.”
During an unrelated event at the White House about rural health care, he recounted Friday how he had threatened European allies with tariffs on pharmaceuticals.
“I may do that for Greenland, too,” Trump said.
He had not previously mentioned using tariffs to try to force the issue.
Earlier this week, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met in Washington with Trump’s vice president, JD Vance, and secretary of state, Marco Rubio.
That encounter didn’t resolve the deep differences, but did produce an agreement to set up a working group — on whose purpose Denmark and the White House then offered sharply diverging public views.
European leaders have said that it’s only for Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters concerning the territory, and Denmark said this week that it was increasing its military presence in Greenland in cooperation with allies.
“There is almost no better ally to the United States than Denmark,” Coons said. “If we do things that cause Danes to question whether we can be counted on as a NATO ally, why would any other country seek to be our ally or believe in our representations?”

Dems Need A Serious, Grown-Up Approach To The Border

Back in 1956, Elvis Presley recorded his massive hit “Don’t Be Cruel.” With all due respect to the King, this great song has many virtues but providing a guide to policy isn’t one of them. Yet it appears to be dictating Democrats’ current approach to the red-hot immigration issue despite its profound inadequacy in the policy realm.
Consider that Democrats have been unremittingly hostile to Trump’s immigration policy since he began his second term, despite its undisputed success in completely shutting down the southern border to illegal immigration. Instead, Democrats have focused relentlessly on the question of interior enforcement—that is, the activities of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) aimed at detaining and deporting illegal immigrants currently living within the United States. The general approach has been to portray all ICE actions as essentially illegitimate, arbitrary and, well, cruel.
Conspicuously lacking has been any recognition that, in fact, interior enforcement against illegal immigration is an entirely legitimate law enforcement operation and that ICE is the government agency charged with these legitimate activities. Therefore, what ICE does is presumptively legitimate not illegitimate.
Democratic treatment of ICE has turned this on its head; their activities are presumptively viewed as illegitimate and if there are any legitimate ICE actions, Democrats are being mighty quiet about it. Instead, characterizations of ICE as a modern-day Gestapo, Nazis, an occupying force, etc have become so common as to be unremarkable. This attitude has led Democrats down a path where their policy on interior enforcement against illegal immigration seems to amount to: “Don’t do it! Don’t be cruel!”
Of course, there is much not to like about how ICE has gone about their business, all of which has been copiously documented. This has been red meat to those sectors of blue America and their political representatives whose revealed preference is not to deport anyone. Think about those ubiquitous “In This House, We Believe” signs in liberal professional-class neighborhoods.
The ICE/interior enforcement issue hits the Daily Double for the “In This House, We Believe” crowd. No human is illegal. Check. Kindness is everything. Check. These may be utterly useless as guides to effective, sustainable immigration policy but they sure do get the juices flowing.
That’s why, from Los Angles to Minneapolis, Democratic activists have felt completely justified in interfering with ICE activities and Democratic politicians in refusing to cooperate with a duly constituted federal law enforcement agency. And that’s why, especially with the tragic recent death of Renee Good, calls of “Abolish ICE!” are beginning to ring out across wide sectors of the Democratic Party. There is no good ICE, only bad ICE. There is no legitimate ICE, only illegitimate ICE.
This is the logical terminus of an attitude that starts with no human being is illegal and kindness is everything. Since ICE’s remit is that illegal immigrants are, in fact, illegal and that the law must be followed, even if the outcome is not particularly kind, it only makes sense to get rid of the agency.
This is a terrible idea in so many different ways. As a very useful new memo from the reform Democratic group Searchlight points out:
[S]aying you want to “Abolish ICE”…means that you support getting rid of the agency responsible for enforcing immigration and customs laws, creating a lawless system where people who enter the country illegally can stay here indefinitely, leaving no agency charged with finding and removing them. This will, inevitably, incentivize others to come to the United States illegally. “Abolish ICE” is not some proxy for more humane immigration enforcement, or to change ICE’s culture to adhere to due process, or to impose accountability on rogue officers. It’s advocating for an extreme.
Unless you truly believe that the United States should not have an agency that enforces immigration and customs laws within our borders, and you want to increase illegal immigration, you should not say you want to abolish ICE…[W]e will always need a federal agency charged with deporting people who are in the United States illegally.
That’s clearly correct as a matter of policy. Democrats need to reflect that in how they talk about ICE or the momentum will continue to shift toward those in the party who simply want to get rid of the agency entirely.
And that would be a disaster. The reasonable—and popular—desire to reform ICE practices would inevitably be subsumed in a contentious debate about abolishing the agency. This is not likely to turn out well for the Democrats despite the solid basis in public opinion for some reform and pullback of ICE activities. Abolishing ICE will likely never be generally popular, despite its sky-high popularity with Democrats where there has been a recent spike in support.
Instead, as the Searchlight memo points out, Democrats will be setting themselves up for a rerun of the “Defund the Police” debacle, also driven by a viral incident (and also in Minneapolis!). A maximalist demand like “Abolish ICE” will serve only to signal a lack of Democratic commitment to immigration enforcement, just as defund the police signaled a lack of Democratic commitment to public safety. This is highly undesirable both for the Democrats politically and for the general cause of reforming ICE practices.
A further lesson from the recent past is provided by the Democratic reaction to Trump’s border crackdowns in his first administration. Seizing on some well-publicized excesses, Democrats pilloried Trump for being cruel and inhumane and promised to be different. And they were! They were kind and humane—and also completely ineffective at controlling the border and preventing abuse of the asylum system once they got back in power, producing the huge wave of illegal and irregular immigration that discredited the Democrats and helped Trump win the 2024 election. “Don’t be cruel” didn’t work out so well then and it won’t work out so well now, either in or out of power.
Democrats instead need to get beyond mindless slogans like “Abolish ICE” and blanket opposition to everything ICE does and embrace what I have termed immigration realism. That approach means taking on board the following realities of immigration into this rich country of ours:
Many more people want to come to a rich country like the United States than an orderly immigration system can allow.
Therefore, many people are willing to break the laws of our country to gain entry.
If you do not enforce the law, you will get more law-breakers and therefore more illegal immigrants.
If you provide procedural loopholes to gain entry into the country (e.g., by claiming asylum), many people will abuse these loopholes.
Once these illegal and irregular immigrants gain entry to the country, they will seek to stay indefinitely regardless of their immigration status.
If interior immigration enforcement is lax, such that these illegal and irregular immigrants do mostly get to stay forever, that provides a tremendous incentive for others to try to gain entry to the country via the same means.
If you provide benefits and dispensations to all immigrants in the country, regardless of their immigration status, this further incentivizes aspiring immigrants to gain entry to the country by any means necessary.
Tolerance of flagrant law-breaking on a mass scale contributes to a sense of social disorder and loss of control among a country’s citizens, who believe a nation’s borders are meaningful and that the welfare of a nation’s citizens should come first.
There is, in fact, such a thing as too much immigration, particularly low-skill immigration, and negative effects on communities and workers are real, not just in the imaginations of xenophobes.
If more immigration is desired by parties or policymakers, from whichever countries and at whatever skill levels, then immigration should be regular, legal immigration and approved by the American people through the democratic process. Backdooring mass immigration over the wishes of voters because it is “kind” or “reflects our values” or is deemed “economically necessary” leads inevitably to backlash. Wheelbarrows full of econometric studies on immigration’s aggregate benefits will not save you.
Obviously, the current Democratic vogue for treating all ICE activities as illegitimate and susceptibility to dumb maximalist slogans like “Abolish ICE” points them in precisely the wrong direction for dealing with the thorny and complex realities of the immigration issue. They’re just setting themselves up for future failure.
In short, it’s time to stop coddling the “In This House, We Believe” crowd and adopt a serious, grown-up approach to immigration and immigrants. “Don’t Be Cruel” isn’t gonna cut it.

Sources say the probe centers on statements Walz and Frey have made about ICE and Border Patrol agents deployed to the sanctuary city in recent weeks. Subpoenas have not yet been issued, but sources said that could be nearing.
Details remain scant about the specific comments by Walz and Frey that DOJ investigators have focused on, but there is a recent interview in which the mayor acknowledges the existence of a network of left-wing nonprofits organizing pressure campaigns in the city. He stopped just short of identifying which nonprofits were involved.

The focus of DOJ investigators and the White House should be the rapid-response efforts of militant left-wing groups and rogue nonprofits that were quick to activate their foot soldiers to unleash a pressure campaign against ICE agents. It was not just Minneapolis; this dark-money-funded NGO network was activated in other sanctuary cities, like New York City, within hours.
New York City councilwoman Vickie Paladino said it best on X:
ICE is doing what should be very mundane work of deporting people who aren’t allowed to be in the country anymore, by law. Just as they have for years.
However, a bunch of lunatics, encouraged by the media and reckless democrat officials, have decided that basic immigration enforcement is ‘literally fascism’ and declared war, turning routine enforcement activity into dangerous civil war cosplay. And people are getting hurt because of it.
The federal government has every right to enforce immigration law, in every jurisdiction of the country. The legal fiction of the ‘sanctuary city’ is completely irrelevant.
Municipalities don’t get to set their own immigration policy, and they don’t get to obstruct federal law enforcement.
And they certainly don’t get to foment and deploy an army of dangerous foot soldiers to physically attack federal agents, for no other reason than a political disagreement over immigration law. It’s actually insane that this even needs to be said.
These people are coming dangerously close to committing insurrection, and the consequences of that will be monumental. This is not the fight they want, and everyone with even half a brain should be urging these Democrats to seriously back off immediately.
If Democrats believe our immigration laws are wrong, we have an election coming up in November and they can run on an explicit platform of repealing these laws, ending immigration enforcement, and re-opening the border.
But they won’t, because they know that platform is a loser outside of a very few very far-left districts. So they’ll continue to pretend that routine immigration enforcement is actually a replay of 1939 Germany, and continue to send mentally unwell liberal women and antifa activists out to risk injury and legal peril in order to win a few news cycles.
Very very sad. And it needs to stop.

The manufactured chaos in Minneapolis is part of the Democratic Party’s dark-money-funded NGO network that has spent years sparking riots and chaos nationwide – remember the nation-killing days of BLM riots. This network was also part of the Los Angeles riots last summer, where Marxist protesters burned Waymo vehicles.

It is time for the Trump administration, as General Flynn has said, to address the American people about the Democratic Party’s ongoing color revolution operation that uses the protest-industrial complex to spark riots and chaos.
This is manufactured chaos at its best and really shows Democrats do not actually have a pro-America platform or any economic plan for the working class; they only have protests, riots, and chaos, with an end goal of their Marxist militant faction to loot and destroy.
