Manchester City lost 3-1 at tiny Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt in one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history on Tuesday, while defending champion Paris Saint-Germain also was on the end of an unexpected defeat at Sporting Lisbon.

Vinícius Júnior turned jeers from his own fans to cheers by scoring for Real Madrid in a 6-1 win over Monaco and Arsenal became the first team to secure direct qualification for the round of 16 after a 3-1 victory at Inter Milan, maintaining its 100% record in the league stage after seven rounds.

Pep Guardiola’s squad of City superstars was humbled inside an 8,000-capacity stadium in Bodø, a Norwegian fishing town north of the Arctic Circle whose soccer team is playing in the Champions League for the first time this season.

City fell 3-0 behind at one point and had 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri sent off in the second half.

“In the end, it’s embarrassing,” said City’s Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, whose team was coming off an abject derby loss to Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

After Kasper Høgh’s first-half double for Bodø/Glimt, Jens Petter Hauge curled into the top corner in the 58th to make it 3-0. City replied through Rayan Cherki but hopes of a comeback were damaged soon after by Rodri collecting two yellow cards in quick succession.

City didn’t look like a team that has had $500 million spent on players over the last 12 months, with its flimsy, injury-hit defense constantly pierced on the counterattack. The hosts had two would-be goals disallowed for narrow offside decisions and also hit the crossbar.

Add this upset to the most unlikely results down the years in the Champions League. They include Moldovan club Sheriff beating Real Madrid 2-1 in 2021, Rubin Kazan winning 2-1 at Guardiola’s Barcelona in 2009, and Swiss underdog Basel beating Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United by the same score in 2011.

PSG struggling

Colombia international Luis Suarez’s 90th-minute goal earned Sporting a 2-1 win over PSG, which — like City — now has work to do in next week’s final round to qualify automatically to the last 16 by finishing in the top eight and avoid needing to go through the two-legged playoffs for a second straight season.

That was Suarez’s second goal of the game. He put Sporting ahead before an equalizer by substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

PSG, which became European champion for the first time last season, dropped to fifth and City to seventh — and they are likely to slip lower after Wednesday’s games.

Arbeloa’s debut

Alvaro Arbeloa, Madrid’s new coach, was taking charge of a Champions League game for the first time and it was again an unusual atmosphere at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Part of the crowd jeered Vinícius nearly every time he touched the ball, like during Saturday’s win over Levante in the Spanish league. The Brazil forward has been having an underwhelming season and some fans view him as one of the reasons why coach Xabi Alonso was replaced last week.

However, the home fans were applauding Vinícius after his solo goal that made it 5-0 in the 63rd minute. Kylian Mbappé, with a double against his first club, and 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono had already scored for Madrid and Jude Bellingham grabbed its sixth goal.

Madrid, the record 15-time champion, climbed to second place.

Arsenal advances

Arsenal is now on its longest-ever winning streak in the Champions League and is guaranteed a top-two finish.

Gabriel Jesus scored the first two goals for the Premier League leaders and the man he started ahead of — Viktor Gyokeres — came off the bench to net the third.

Petar Sucic had made it 1-1 with a goal for Inter, the heavily beaten finalist last season which has lost three straight games in the competition for the first time.

Inter slipped to ninth place.

Respite for Frank

Eleven teams in the Champions League have changed coaches already this season and Tottenham manager Thomas Frank was being tipped as the next to go heading into a home match against Borussia Dortmund.

However, Spurs won 2-0 against the 2024 runner-up, which had midfielder Daniel Svensson sent off in the first half, to give Frank some respite and move into fourth place.

The Dane has been jeered by Tottenham’s own fans in recent games.

Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke scored Tottenham’s goals.

Napoli in danger

The Italian champions are in danger of elimination.

Napoli was held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man FC Copenhagen and dropped to 23rd place before Wednesday’s games. Those finishing 25th or lower in the 36-team standings won’t even qualify for the playoffs.

Copenhagen had captain Thomas Delaney sent off after a VAR check in the 35th and went behind to Scott McTominay’s goal four minutes later. Jordan Larsson equalized.

Winless teams

It’s turning into a miserable debut in the Champions League for Kairat Almaty, which lost 4-1 to Club Brugge to stay in last place in the 36-team standings and is one of three teams without a win so far.

Another is Villarreal, which conceded in the 89th to lose 2-1 to Ajax.

After a daylong process that took place partially out of public earshot, a jury was selected Tuesday in the trial of a Chicago man accused of passing along a gang bounty allegedly placed on the head of controversial Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino.

The jury of six men and six women, plus two alternates, was sworn in about 3:30 p.m. to hear the case against Juan Martinez Espinoza, then promptly excused until opening statements Wednesday morning. The trial is expected to end by Friday.

Few details on each of the jurors were discussed in open court. One is a man who said he works as a contracted truck driver. Another man takes care of an elderly family member. One juror, a woman, said she once served on a jury in California. Another male juror told the judge he’d just landed a second interview for a new job.

At least three members of the panel have Hispanic surnames.

Espinoza Martinez, who has lived in Chicago for years but is not a U.S. citizen, is charged in an indictment with a single count of solicitation of murder for hire, which carries up to 10 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Espinoza Martinez told a law enforcement source after an immigration agent shot a woman in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood on Oct. 4 “that he had dispatched members of the Latin Kings” to the area of 39th and Kedzie in response to the shooting.

The law enforcement source shared Snapchat messages that Espinoza Martinez had sent him saying, “2k on information when you get him” and “10k if u take him down,” according to the complaint.

The message also stated “LK on him,” which was a reference to the Latin Kings, the complaint alleged. Included in the message was a photo of Bovino.

Espinoza Martinez’s trial is the first criminal case stemming from Operation Midway Blitz to go to a jury, and is sure to attract national attention.

Though limited in scope, the case is expected to offer an important litmus test as immigration-enforcement operations continue to roil Chicago and other Democrat-led cities long targeted by President Donald Trump, including Minneapolis, where the killing of a U.S. citizen by an immigration agent earlier this month has sparked nationwide protests.

The jurors were empaneled Tuesday after filling out questionnaires about their backgrounds and ability to serve, including any opinions they might have about the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.

Bovino’s name didn’t come up in court until after a lunch break, when U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow told the pool of prospective jurors she wanted to “just give you a little bit more information about the case before we go further.”

“The case is called United States v. Juan Espinoza Martinez, and the defendant is charged with committing acts in furtherance of a murder-for-hire plot against Gregory Bovino,” the judge said.

Bovino was not mentioned again in open court. However, during a discussion about “for cause” challenges, it became clear that at least a few jurors had revealed they had strong feelings about Operation Midway Blitz, the aggressive deportation push in the Chicago area that began in early September.

One woman was dismissed for cause after she said she had strong opinions on immigration enforcement but also said she thought she could put those feelings aside and be fair.

Another juror, also a woman, said she didn’t agree with the current immigration enforcement policies and knows people who live near the Brighton Park shooting incident. Prosecutors successfully argued she should be dismissed, telling the judge she’s “going to have trouble putting that aside to assess the evidence in this case.”

“These issues hit close to home for her,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Yonan said. “She is going to have trouble putting that aside to assess the evidence in this case.”

The judge also dismissed a male prospective juror who said he didn’t agree with the current immigration policies and had friends who’d been tear-gassed by agents.

Espinoza Martinez’s attorney, Jonathan Bedi, noted the juror eventually said he could be fair and impartial, despite his opinions on immigration. “We are not asking people to check their feelings and emotions at the door,” Bedi said. “Nobody is asking them to be a blank slate.”

Before jury selection began Tuesday, Lefkow made a series of last-minute rulings on evidentiary issues that further limited what the jury will hear about Chicago street gangs during testimony.

Espinoza Martinez was initially charged in a criminal complaint alleging he was a high-ranking member of the Latin Kings street gang with “authority to order other members to carry out violent acts, including murder.”

The case was held up by top Department of Homeland Security officials as an example of the violence and threats immigration agents were facing from gang members and even international drug cartels.

In the months since, however, evidence of Espinoza Martinez’s supposed gang affiliations has not materialized. Prosecutors vastly toned down that aspect of the case, first dropping mention of gang affiliation in the indictment handed up by a grand jury, then saying in a pretrial hearing they only intended to prove Espinoza Martinez had an “affinity” for the Latin Kings.

On Tuesday, the defense objected to prosecutors introducing a text string where Espinoza Martinez told an unidentified contact: “It’s going down bro my guys are ready in the vill (Little Village). Saints sd and 2Six being bitches. Kings on they ass n they scared.”

Prosecutors argued the conversation showed Espinoza Martinez was disappointed other gangs weren’t fighting back.

But Lefkow sided partially with the defense, saying the comments on Little Village can be shown to the jury, but not the references to the Latin Saints or Two-Six gangs.

She also excluded later text by Espinoza Martinez about “Chapo” having the Latin Kings’ back — a reference to former Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Prosecutors also wanted to play a short video clip that Espinoza Martinez forwarded after he was asked by the cooperator what his text about the bounty on Bovino meant.

The video, which was played for Lefkow on Tuesday, showed an unidentified man standing out at 26th and Spauling asking where all the gangbangers were.

“Now that ICE is out here there nobody out here … it’s a (expletive) ghost town,” the person said on the video, which Espinoza Martinez was not a part of.

Prosecutors said it showed Espinoza Martinez’s motivation for sending along the Latin Kings’ bounty offer.

But Lefkow ruled the video cannot be used because prosecutors cannot show it was a statement adopted by the defendant.

Duke has filed a lawsuit against quarterback Darian Mensah seeking to block his efforts to transfer and reach a contract with another school to play elsewhere next season.

The university filed its complaint in Durham County Superior Court on Monday, three days after Mensah reversed his previously announced plan to return to the Blue Devils after leading them to the ACC title.

The school argued that its two-season contract with Mensah — signed in July 2025 and running through 2026 — paid him for exclusive rights to market Mensah’s name, image and likeness (NIL) tied to playing college football.

Duke sought a temporary restraining order from the court to prevent Mensah from entering the transfer portal along with blocking him from taking additional steps in the process of reaching a deal with a new school, arguing that the contract requires parties to go through arbitration before any dispute can be resolved.

“This case arises out of the decision of a star quarterback in the increasingly complex world of college athletics,” the complaint states in its opening. “But at its core, this is a simple case that involves the integrity of contracts.”

Mensah, who transferred in from Tulane, finished second in the FBS by throwing for 3,973 yards while tying for second with 34 touchdown passes.

The Mensah-Duke case is the latest in what is becoming a more frequent occurrence in the revenue-sharing era of college sports: legal fights over contracts between schools and players seeking to transfer.

Earlier this month, Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. announced plans to transfer before changing his mind two days later, amid multiple reports that the school was prepared to pursue legal options to enforce Williams’ NIL contract.

In December, Missouri pass rusher Damon Wilson II filed a countersuit claiming the athletic department at Georgia was trying to illegally punish him for entering the portal in January 2025. Georgia had filed a lawsuit in November claiming Wilson owed the athletic department $390,000 in liquidated damages for leaving the team.

WASHINGTON — U.S. military forces boarded and took control of a seventh oil tanker connected with Venezuela on Tuesday as the Trump administration continues its efforts to take control of the South American country’s oil.

U.S. Southern Command said in a social media post that U.S. forces apprehended the Motor Vessel Sagitta “without incident” and that the tanker was operating in defiance of President Donald Trump’s “established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean.”

The military command did not say whether the U.S. Coast Guard took control of the tanker as has been the case in prior seizures. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to questions for more details.

The Sagitta is a Liberian-flagged tanker and its registration says it is owned and managed by a company in Hong Kong. The ship last transmitted its location more than two months ago when exiting the Baltic Sea in northern Europe.

The tanker was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department under an executive order related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The post from U.S. Southern Command, however, indicated the ship had taken oil from Venezuela. It said the capture of the tanker “demonstrates our resolve to ensure that the only oil leaving Venezuela will be oil that is coordinated properly and lawfully.”

The military command posted what appeared to be aerial footage of the Sagitta sailing on the ocean, but unlike in prior videos the clip did not show U.S. forces flying toward it in helicopters or landing on the deck of the ship.

Trump told reporters just hours before the announcement that the U.S. already has taken 50 million barrels of oil out of Venezuela.

“We’ve got millions of barrels of oil left,” he said at the White House. “We’re selling it on the open market. We’re bringing down oil prices incredibly.”

NEW YORK — Stocks slumped on Wall Street Tuesday after President Donald Trump threatened to hit eight European countries with new tariffs as tensions escalate over his attempts to assert American control over Greenland.

The losses were widespread, with nearly every sector losing ground. Major indexes in the U.S. extended losses from last week in what has been a wobbly start to the year.

The S&P 500 fell 143.15 points, or 2.1%, to 6,796.86. It is the steepest drop for the benchmark index since October.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 870.74 points, or 1.8%, to 48,488.59. The Nasdaq composite fell 561.07 points, or 2.4%, to 22,954.32.

Technology stocks were the heaviest weights on the market. Nvidia, one of the most valuable companies in the world, plunged 4.4%. Apple fell 3.5%.

Retailers, banks and industrial companies also fell sharply. Lowe’s fell 3.3%, JPMorgan Chase fell 3.1%, and Caterpillar lost 2.5%.

European markets and markets in Asia fell. Long-term bond yields in Japan rose to record levels on concerns over the government’s fiscal policy, adding to anxiety in global markets.

Trump’s trade policy has roiled markets since the start of his second term. Stocks have sold off on the threat of steep tariffs, then rallied when Trump delays or cancels a tariff, or negotiates a lower rate.

Trump said Saturday that he would charge a 10% import tax starting in February on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. The annual combined imports from European Union nations are greater than those from the top two biggest individual importers into the U.S., Mexico and China.

Gold prices surged 3.7% and silver prices soared 6.9%. Such assets are often considered safe havens in times of geopolitical turmoil.

The trade tensions apparently short-circuited a recent rally in bitcoin. The cryptocurrency rose above $96,000 late last week but has dropped back to around $89,700.

Treasury yields were mixed in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.29% from 4.23% late Friday. The yield on the two-year Treasury held steady at 3.60% from late Friday.

Companies that focus on consumer staples held up better than most of the market. Colgate-Palmolive rose 1.1% and Campbell’s rose 1.5%.

The price of U.S. crude oil rose 1.5% to $60.34 per barrel. The price of Brent crude, the international standard, rose 1.5% to $64.92.

Trump linked his aggressive stance on Greenland to last year’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, telling Norway’s prime minister that he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely of Peace,” in a text message released Monday.

Trump’s message to Jonas Gahr Støre appeared to ratchet up a standoff between Washington and its closest allies over his threats to take over Greenland, a self-governing territory of NATO member Denmark.

Trump’s threats have sparked outrage and a flurry of diplomatic activity across Europe, as leaders consider possible countermeasures, including retaliatory tariffs and the first-ever use of the European Union’s anti-coercion instrument.

The trade and political conflict with Europe is heating up just as world leaders meet at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland this week. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said the new tariff threat “is clearly an overhang on the conference,” but that it would likely simmer over time.

“Our view is just like over the last year the bark will be worse than the bite on this issue and tariff threats as negotiations take place and tensions ultimately calm down between Trump and EU leaders,” Ives wrote in a note to clients.

Tariffs threaten to boost inflation, although so far the increases have been less than many experts feared. Still, the threat of tariffs reigniting already high inflation could further complicate the Federal Reserve’s job.

The central bank cut its benchmark interest rate three times late in 2025 to help bolster the economy as the job market weakened. The Fed has taken a more cautious view because of the risk of rising inflation, which remains above its target of 2%.

Lower interest rates on loans can help bolster economic activity, but they could also fuel inflation, which could counter any benefit from lower interest rates.

The Fed, and Wall Street, will get another update on inflation on Thursday, when the government releases the personal consumption expenditures price index, or PCE. It is the Fed’s preferred measure for inflation.

The Fed will meet next week for its policy meeting on interest rates and Wall Street is betting that the central bank will hold its benchmark interest rate steady.

Wall Street is also in the midst of the latest round of corporate earnings, which could help provide more insight into how companies are handling uncertainty from tariffs, geopolitics and cautious consumers.

Industrial and consumer conglomerate 3M slumped 7% after reporting mixed results for its most recent quarter. Companies from a wide range of industries will report their results this week, including Johnson & Johnson, Halliburton and Intel.

Netflix is now offering to buy Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming business in all cash — in an effort to win over the Hollywood giant’s shareholders for its $72 billion merger and potentially thwart a hostile bid from Skydance-owned Paramount.

Back in December, Netflix struck a cash and stock deal with Warner valued at $27.75 per share, giving it a total enterprise value of $82.7 billion, including debt. But on Tuesday, the companies announced that they would be revising the transaction to simplify its structure, provide more certainty of value for Warner stockholders and speed up the path to a shareholder vote — which they said could arrive by April.

The all-cash transaction is still valued at $27.75 per Warner share. Warner stockholders will also receive the additional value of shares of Discovery Global, which would become a separate public company following a previously-announced separation from Warner Bros.

Warner leadership has repeatedly backed a merger with Netflix — and the boards of both companies approved the all-cash deal announced Tuesday. In a statement, Warner CEO David Zaslav said the revised agreement “brings us even closer to combining two of the greatest storytelling companies in the world.”

A spokesperson for Paramount declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press on Tuesday. Unlike Netflix, Paramount wants to acquire Warner’s entire company — including networks like CNN and Discovery — and went straight to shareholders with all cash, $77.9 billion offer last month.

Warner stockholders have until 5 p.m. ET Wednesday to tender their shares in support of Paramount’s bid, which has an enterprise value of $108 billion including debt. But that deadline could be pushed back further. While Paramount declined to share further details on Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported last week that the company was planning on another extension.

Beyond its tender offer, Paramount has promised a proxy fight. Last week, the company said it would nominate its own slate of directors before the Warner’s next shareholder meeting, the date of which has still not been set.

Paramount also filed a suit in Delaware Chancery Court seeking to compel Warner Bros. to disclose to shareholders how it values its bid and the competing offer from Netflix. But a judge on Thursday denied Paramount’s request to expedite that proceeding.

In a statement at the time, Warner applauded the court’s decision and called Paramount’s lawsuit “yet another unserious attempt to distract.” Paramount, meanwhile, maintained that the ruling wasn’t about the merits of its allegations and said Warner shareholders “should ask why their Board is working so hard to hide this information.”

Regardless of who eventually wins the upper hand, a Warner Bros. Discovery sale could be a long, drawn-out process that is almost certain to attract tremendous antitrust scrutiny. On Tuesday, Netflix and Warner maintained that they expect to close on a merger 12 to 18 months from December’s agreement.

Still, Paramount’s hostile bid could complicate that timeline. Politics are also expected to come into play under President Donald Trump, who has made unprecedented suggestions about his personal involvement on whether a deal will go through.

Trade groups across the media and entertainment industry have sounded the alarm over both bids, warning that further consolidation in the industry could result in job losses and less diversity in content — with particularly negative consequences for filmmaking.

The companies have spoken on those concerns. On Tuesday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said combining with Warner “will deliver broader choice and greater value to audiences worldwide” both at home and in theaters — while “driving job creation and long-term industry growth.”

Netflix’s stock inched up just under 1% Tuesday morning, while shares of Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount-Skydance fell slightly.

Elkin, an undrafted rookie long snapper out of Iowa in 2025, went through training camp with the Bears last summer but didn’t make the 53-man roster. He most recently was on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.

The Bears called up Brown to the active roster for three games during the 2025 season. He scored his first career touchdown on Nov. 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Futures contracts can be given to players who were not on the 53-man roster. They typically are at the league’s minimum salary and don’t count against the salary cap until the new league year begins in March.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Actor Melissa Gilbert could speak Tuesday at a New Mexico detention hearing for her husband, Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield, who faces child sex abuse charges stemming from allegations that he inappropriately touched a minor on a TV series set.

Busfield, who is known for appearances in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams” and “Thirtysomething,” was ordered held without bond last week at his first court appearance. Busfield called the allegations lies in a video shared before he turned himself in. Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls in the 1970s to ’80s TV series “Little House on the Prairie,” is on the list of potential witness submitted ahead of the hearing.

Albuquerque police issued a warrant for Busfield’s arrest earlier this month on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. A criminal complaint alleges the acts occurred on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady,” which was directed by Busfield and was filmed in the city.

According to the criminal complaint, an investigator with the police department says the child reported Busfield touched him on private areas over his clothing on one occasion when he was 7 years old and another time when he was 8. The boy’s twin brother told authorities he was also touched by Busfield, but did not specify where. He said he didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to get in trouble.

On Monday, Busfield’s attorneys submitted two brief audio recordings of initial police interviews in which the children say Busfield did not touch them in private areas. The attorneys in a court filing argue that the complaint characterizes the interviews as a failure to disclose abuse, but an “unequivocal denial is materially different from a mere absence of disclosure.”

According to the criminal complaint, one of the boys disclosed during a therapy session that he was inappropriately touched by the show’s director. Those records were obtained by police during the investigation.

Busfield’s attorneys have argued that the allegations emerged only after the boys lost their role in the TV show, creating a financial and retaliatory motive. The filings detailed what the attorneys said was a history of fraud by both the boys’ father and mother.
