Batavia transfer Saffy Thompson-Woods ‘has really changed things’ at Morgan Township in a short time

Morgan Township coach Carl Patz quipped that junior guard Saffy Thompson-Woods “fell into our lap.”

The landing has been smooth all around. The 5-foot-8 Thompson-Woods, who transferred from Batavia, Illinois, is the leading scorer for the Cherokees.

“That’s the type of player she is,” Patz said. “Saffy moved in and brought a certain skill set that adds to the team significantly.”

Thompson-Woods, who was averaging team highs of 17.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists to go along with 3.2 steals before Morgan Township (15-4, 5-1) played Westville in the semifinals of the Porter County Conference Tournament on Friday, was born in Chicago. But she moved to Florida before she was a year old and grew up there.

Thompson-Woods attended Mount Dora Christian Academy as a freshman before she returned to the Midwest. She spent her sophomore year at Batavia, playing at the varsity and junior varsity levels for one season, and then her mother’s job led her to move to Morgan Township.

“It’s been good,” Thompson-Woods said. “Everybody’s nice. Everybody’s had positive input.”

Thompson-Woods’ debut with the Cherokees was delayed, however.

“She wasn’t eligible all summer with us because she didn’t get enrolled before the school year ended,” Patz said. “But she was in the gym every day watching us. Not even enrolled here, not able to do anything, she just sat on the bleacher, and she would go to Chesterton and watch us play our games.

“Finally we got about one hour with her at the end of summer, right after she enrolled, that we were still in the gym. As soon as she got on the court, there was mad respect from the whole team because they finally got to see her play. But because she was here all summer, they already had a level of respect for her.”

Morgan Township junior guard Addison LaMere can attest to that.

“We lost some really good players from last year, some seniors that graduated that were really monumental to our team, and Saffy coming in this year has really changed things for us,” LaMere said. “She’s made such a big impact on our offensive play. She works super hard on both offense and defense.

“I love her personality. I love how she contributes to our team. She’s energetic and fun and knows how to uplift her teammates. She’s not afraid to drive and shoot, and it’s just been really great having her here.”

It didn’t take long for Thompson-Woods and LaMere, who lived in Orland Park, Illinois, for four years, to bond.

“She adjusted really well,” LaMere said. “She came from a part of the Chicagoland area that’s completely different, and I did, too, so I kind of know how that feels.

“Me and Saffy hit it off right away. I drive her around a lot and drop her off after practice. We’ve gotten close. At first, she was a little bit introverted, but everybody on the team was super accepting and excited, and she just warmed up so much. She’s the perfect addition to our team.”

Thompson-Woods, who also competes in hurdles and the high jump in track and field, has six older brothers. Her youngest brother is eight years older than her.

“My brothers are protective over me,” she said. “But they’d say I’m spoiled because I’m the youngest one.”

Patz praised Thompson-Woods’ work ethic.

“She’s earned everything she’s getting from her teammates, and she pays that back to them,” Patz said. “She is team-first, sometimes to a fault. With the way I coach and the way we run our team, it’s a good thing. Because of it, she’s gotten a lot of support from the girls. She’s earned the respect of the girls.

“She fits right in. They all play well together. If you weren’t from around here and you came to watch our team play, you would think she’s been here for three, four years, and grew up with these girls. It’s been a blessing for the team, myself as a coach and for the school. She’s put in a lot to make it work for herself and everyone around her.”

Winter Storm Threatens Appalachian NatGas With ‘Freeze Offs’ As Data Center Demand Tightens PJM Grid

Winter Storm Threatens Appalachian NatGas With ‘Freeze Offs’ As Data Center Demand Tightens PJM Grid

Submitted by Criterion Research President James Bevan,

An incoming winter ice storm is poised to crimp Appalachian natural gas production at a critical moment when the power grid faces mounting pressure from surging data center demand and extreme cold.

Appalachian volumes already plummeted 682/d to 34,745 MMcf/d as the ongoing cold snap hit supply. The region is down 2,189 MMcf/d versus recent two-week highs.

Freeze-offs are already taking effect, with Pittsburgh projected to experience overnight lows near 0°F by January 27.

Winter is Coming for Appalachia
This week’s Appalachian nat gas production is already down 1.1 Bcf/d versus last week, and the extreme cold is just getting started.

Pittsburgh overnight lows are headed to -6.8°F at their most intense levels next week, with this cold coming in… pic.twitter.com/l2oyl80cfe

— Criterion Research (@PipelineFlows) January 22, 2026

The Moisture Problem

The critical difference between ice storms and snow is moisture. Freezing rain, sleet, and ice create wet conditions that prove far more problematic than dry snow. For the Northeast pipeline system, ice and sleet storms pose significantly higher risks to sustained gas production compared to snow events.

Freezing liquid accumulation causes multiple failure modes: frozen dump valves block separators and pneumatic controls, ice accumulation damages exposed infrastructure and above-ground systems, rapid freezing exacerbates blockages and underground damage, and operational shutdowns from structural failures account for substantial cold-weather incidents. Internal freeze-offs—when ice freezes on valves and equipment—obstruct gas flow throughout the system.

NOAA’s latest forecast shows freezing rain concentrations from Texas to the Carolinas, with six-inch snowfall probabilities concentrated in Appalachia. Ice accumulation is expected across the region through January 26.

Grid Stress Mounting

Complicating the supply disruption is explosive demand-side growth from data centers, which have become one of the fastest-growing electricity consumers in the power sector. As AI computing facilities proliferate across the Northeast, winter power demand is spiking precisely when weather threatens production. Preliminary guidance suggests freeze-offs could drop production by 5-8 Bcf/d, with >10-15 Bcf/d possible if infrastructure sustains damage.

PJM observed demand flows are already pointing higher on the Criterion Mapping Analytics Platform – and the cold is only starting to migrate in.

This dual squeeze – compressed supply from weather events and surging electricity demand from data center buildout – is testing the grid’s ability to maintain supply during extreme weather.

The convergence represents a critical vulnerability: production-constrained Appalachia feeding a power system increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure, while winter extremes threaten both simultaneously.

Silver Tops $100 As Chinese Demand Is Literally ‘Off The Charts’

Silver Tops $100 As Chinese Demand Is Literally ‘Off The Charts’

Spot Silver prices just topped $100 for the first time in history…

Quite a journey of late…

Yet, as we noted earlier in the week, despite record highs prices, Goldman’s commodity trading desk notes that spec positioning in New York and Shanghai remains close to the lows.

Perhaps with the understatement of the week, Goldman’s Delta-One desk-head Rick Privorotsky noted earlier that gold and silver remain in an aggressive uptrend.

The broader signal still looks like reserve diversification rather than pure risk hedging.

There is clearly hot money involved, but first and foremost gold is a central bank trade… a slow erosion of the dollar’s exorbitant privilege rather than a sudden loss of confidence.

If there was one chart that summed up the craziness in the silver market it is this… the premium being paid for silver in Shanghai over silver in the West…

‘Off the charts’…

Which appears to back Goldman’s Adam Gillard belief that Chinese and Indian physical demand (partly from retail) has been the driver behind the last leg of the rally.

Positioning:

Surprisingly low on both CMX and SHFE, despite record prices and macro focus.

Managed money positioning is at 1y lows in NY, and increasing OI in CMX silver puts is sharply outpacing calls; Friday’s close was the highest OI in silver puts as a % of calls in the last 10 years.

Indian physical:

Appears strong despite price strength, we think due to strong physical demand from Indian retail (typically physical bids drop on rapid (derivative) price rallies).

Chinese physical:

Remains tight because strong exports in October (21mn oz, an ATH high) due to the LBMA lease rate strength tightened the domestic market, sending SGE inventory to record lows.

Chinese import / export arbitrage economics:

Domestic tightness has caused significant SHFE / CMX strength, which resulted in Dec25 net imports of 1mn toz vs Jan25-Nov25 monthly average of 5.8mn toz.

~90% of Chinese silver exports flow to India via Hong Kong, which explains the current HK physical premium.

LBMA physical:

All whilst the LBMA system remains relatively tight due to previous US import strength from tariff concerns (although this flow is starting to reverse now)

So, to sum it all up, Goldman’s commodity desk view is that price has run too far but they’re reluctant to short until we see physical premia ease

Putin Not Budging: ‘Frank’ Talks With Witkoff Confirm Territory Is A Red Line

Putin Not Budging: ‘Frank’ Talks With Witkoff Confirm Territory Is A Red Line

Russia’s President Putin held a late-night meeting Thursday at the Kremlin with the US delegation led by White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, just hours ahead of planned trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi Friday aimed at pushing the Trump-backed peace framework to end the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov soon after the four-hour discussion called the engagement “substantive” and “frank” – and mentioned it was conducted with an unusually high level of mutual trust, which typically suggests hard truths were exchanged behind closed doors.

AFP/Getty Images

Witkoff was again accompanied by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, with the pair arriving in Moscow from the World Economic Forum in Davos, at which Witkoff publicly stated his view that Russia and Ukraine may be edging closer to a deal:

“The president has talked about a tariff-free zone from Ukraine that I think would be game-changing,” Witkoff said at the Ukrainian Breakfast on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps resort town.

I think we made a lot of progress. I think in the beginning of this process there was a little bit of confusion,” he said.

Still, following the late night meeting the Kremlin said the “territorial issue” remains unresolved, as the Ukrainian side is still pushing for a freeze of the front lines, while Moscow seeks a final political settlement which falls nothing short of full recognition of its hold over the four eastern territories.

Ushakov’s further conclusion was that while Moscow and Washington are both “sincerely interested” in a political and diplomatic resolution, until such a deal is reached, Russia will continue pursuing its objectives on the battlefield as it maintains the strategic upper hand.

“Russia would continue to consistently pursue the objectives … on the battlefield, where the Russian armed forces hold the strategic initiative,” Ushakov said.

He stressed that any illusion of compromise has limits, explaining that without a settlement on territorial control, “there can be no long-term agreement” – which of course sends the strong signal that Moscow is not budging, at least publicly, on its demand to retain control of the Donbas region.

The Kremlin aide also mentioned that discussions touched on Trump’s invitation for Russia to join his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative, as well as rising tensions related to the US seeking control over Greenland. Moscow has seen itself on the sidelines regarding this, with President Putin having said this week that Denmark and the US will have to sort it out.

Ushakov reiterated that Russia would be willing to contribute the $1 billion required for permanent membership in the ‘board of peace’ but has come up with a creative condition: the funds must come from Russian assets currently frozen in the US following the invasion of Ukraine. Frozen assets which remain after that could be focused on post-war reconstruction for Ukraine, the Kremlin aide indicated.

— Kirill Dmitriev (@kadmitriev) January 23, 2026

Overall, as expected this exchange with the US delegation didn’t produce much, except to make clear each’s position and to at least keep bilateral US-Russia relations on a positive, communicative track. But it really does underscore that after a year of the Trump administration pressing hard for a peace deal, the warring sides are in fact no closer to the goal line.

Schools closed across north suburbs as sub-zero temperatures arrive in the Chicago area

There is no in-school attendance Friday for thousands of students across Chicagoland, including in suburban Norridge, Park Ridge, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove and Niles, amid arctic-like temperatures with dangerous windchills that moved into the area overnight.

Starting Thursday, school officials sent out notifications to families advising that classes would either be canceled due to the weather or students would do remote learning. The closures, which include district offices, also affect extracurricular activities.

Area school districts impacted include Park Ridge-based Maine Township High School District 207, Skokie-based Niles Township High School District 219 – which serves students from Niles, Morton Grove, Lincolnwood and Skokie – Ridgewood High School District 234 in Norridge, Niles-Park Ridge School District 64..

“All afterschool activities are also cancelled including practices, rehearsals, games, performances and meetings. Based upon the forecast, the plan is that events scheduled for Saturday … will be held,” District 207 school leaders announced.

The one-day closure is being considered an emergency day for the district, with no plans for e-learning stated.

District 219, however, moved its more than 4,500 students to e-learning. School officials noted in that district’s announcement that Friday is an attendance day for the students of its two high schools, Niles North and Niles West. But, before- and after-school activities are canceled.

“Students and teachers will work remotely from home. Please note the important information below,” reads the District 219 closure announcement.
The district’s e-learning plan is available on the District 219 website, according to officials.

At District 64, one of the area elementary school districts, schools and offices are closed for the day “due to the extreme below-freezing wind chill forecasted (-30 below zero) throughout the area,” according to the district announcement.

In addition to other activities, the district canceled the Beyond the Bell program which is part of its partnership with the Park District of Park Ridge.

“Screw You Guys, I’m Going Home!”: The South Park Market Of 2026

“Screw You Guys, I’m Going Home!”: The South Park Market Of 2026

Authored by Lance Roberts via RealInvestmentAdvice.com,

I have been a “South Park” fan for as long as I can remember, and while the show isn’t a market guidebook, its brutal satire cuts through nonsense better than many Wall Street commentaries. Just like on the show, characters make absurd decisions and face absurd consequences, which is familiar to investors today. For example, one of my favorite scenes is when Stanley goes to the bank to deposit the money his Grandmother gave him into an account at the bank…“And It’s Gone.”

Notably, in South Park, Eric Cartman once declared, “Screw you guys, I’m going home.” That line has become shorthand for frustration and fatigue when chaos overwhelms you during market volatility. For example, during the “Liberation Day” market decline, many investors sold out just as the market reached its bottom. The increase in market volatility was something we wrote about this time last year in “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Notably, the same market dynamics that existed then persist today. Such suggests that investing in 2026 may also experience similar increases in volatility. That means anyone looking for a simple road map will end up feeling like Cartman walking out on his friends.

To avoid being Cartman, it is critical to understand that 2026 will not deliver certainty. Instead, investors should focus and make decisions based on probabilities backed by data, earnings trends, policy shifts, and macro signals. Wall Street analysts have already begun issuing universally bullish forecasts, some more cautious than others. However, while there are no guarantees of outcomes, a shifting environment of volatility and complexity is expected.

This article breaks the 2026 outlook into three cornerstone sections:

Market Structure and Valuations

Economic Forces and Policy Drivers

Strategic Investment Implications

Across each section, you will see the same economic truth South Park illustrates: Chaos is not the opposite of order. Chaos is part of the system.

Market Structure and Valuations in 2026

Wall Street begins 2026 with conflicting signals. As noted above, while several Wall Street firms expect to see another year of “double-digit” gains in 2026, such follows three consecutive years of elevated gains. That is potentially a risk as discussed in the “Market Outlook For 2026,”

“The current 3-year return is 18% above its 3-year average. While that is not the highest level on record, when the index trades significantly above its moving average, volatility tends to rise. These periods often see sharp drawdowns, and corrections become more frequent, with increased variance in returns leading to larger losses in downturns, which compounds the problem. Secondly, there are declining risk-adjusted returns. When returns deviate significantly from the trend, future returns tend to revert toward the mean. This mean reversion is driven by stretched valuations resetting. Over time, high volatility and large price swings reduce compound returns. Even if average returns remain positive, the math of compounding is compromised by losses, weakening full-cycle gains.”

Secondly, the markets currently trade at record levels above their long-term exponential growth trend. As shown in the chart below, when valuations rise unchecked, the market grossly exceeds its long-term exponential growth trend, eventually leading to a reversion.

Lastly, valuations remain above long‑term historical norms. Crucially, as discussed in a recent #BullBearReport:

“Market valuation measures are just that—a measure of current valuation. Moreover, market valuations are a much better measure of “investor psychology” and a manifestation of the “greater fool theory.” This is why a high correlation exists between one-year trailing valuations and consumer confidence in higher stock prices.”

Simply, this means that current valuations are just a reflection of the “hope” that future earnings growth and profitability will justify overpaying for assets today. Wall Street’s 2026 forecast for the markets represents that “hope.”

However, what we do know today is that the most powerful force in finance is “mean reversion.” As all the charts above demonstrate, at some point over the next five years, market returns will likely be closer to 0% than 10%.

Of course, that doesn’t mean markets will “crash” in 2026. However, price deviations, excess valuations, and elevated sentiment do suggest that market volatility will likely be higher and returns lower than current expectations. Such is particularly the case if something happens that causes Wall Street to lower forward earnings expectations. It is worth noting that historically, valuations have not always caught up with earnings, but rather vice versa.

That scenario is when the Cartman line feels most appropriate: “Screw you guys, I’m going home.” Because investors will shift from an optimistic to a defensive position almost instantly.

Drivers Shaping 2026

Markets do not exist in a vacuum. Earnings “expectations” are what will matter the most, but earnings are influenced by macro forces such as inflation, interest rates, global growth, and monetary policy. Currently, many of those factors are not favorable to those more elevated forecasts.

For example, inflation remains a central concern with major investment banks and strategists cautioning that inflation may hover above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target as the labor market weakens. Jerome Powell even noted this in the December FOMC policy statement. During Powell’s press conference, he emphasized that job gains have slowed and downside risks to employment have increased. That statement aligns with our recent article on how alternative employment sources may affect its outlook. Powell went further, suggesting official payroll figures likely overstate job growth by around 60,000 jobs per month. That implies an actual labor market contraction. It further acknowledges that the potential negative payroll growth was a pivotal signal of the Fed’s priorities.

Such is crucial to forward expectations, because the markets are closely tied to both fiscal and monetary actions. While the Fed signaled possible rate cuts in 2026, if inflation does not subside as expected, rate cuts may be limited or postponed, which would negatively impact investor confidence. Famed investors often warn that policy surprises matter more than policy intentions, especially when markets are priced for optimism.

Secondly, internationally, growth forecasts are uneven. Credit rating agencies project moderate but uneven expansion across major economies, with emerging markets often outpacing developed markets in GDP growth. That imbalance creates divergence in asset returns and credit flows. However, given that the Euro area is expected to grow at roughly half the rate of the US, it would be unsurprising to see 2025’s outperformance by international markets, relative to the US, reverse.

In such environments, currency fluctuations and trade dynamics become even more crucial, meaning that a strong U.S. dollar rally or slowing global trade could pressure multinational earnings even if domestic sales hold up.

Lastly, leverage is a growing risk of market volatility disruption. As we discussed in “The DPI Link To Margin Debt,” household allocations to equities are at a record. Of course, such should be unsurprising given the strong market advances over the past few years.

However, this surge in allocations has also been accompanied by a massive expansion in leverage. Currently, margin debt as a percentage of real DPI has been reported at around 6.23 %, the highest on record. This ratio also suggests that for every $100 of real DPI, roughly $6 of margin debt is outstanding, a substantial amount. But that number doesn’t include the additional leverage taken on by investors through speculative option trading and 2x and 3x leveraged ETFs, which are also being bought on margin.

As we concluded:

Naturally, when fresh savings are lacking and investors turn to margin to participate in markets, two risks emerge.

The quality of the investor base weakens because borrowed money replaces savings.

The carrying cost of that borrowing becomes more salient when interest rates are elevated. If the margin debt carries higher interest and investors’ income growth is weak, servicing the debt becomes harder, reducing the buffer against loss.

“In summary, weak DPI growth, combined with elevated margin borrowing, creates a vulnerability. In such an environment, the investor base is much less resilient.”

Does any of this mean the markets are going to crash in 2026? No.

However, investors should be aware that all these forces interact in complex ways. Recognizing that macroeconomic data releases, policy shifts, and geopolitical events can lead to short-term volatility and long-term trend adjustments is crucial for navigating the “South Park” market in 2026.

South Park Wisdom for Investors

South Park often shows characters reacting emotionally to chaos. Yet mature investors must behave differently and recognize that emotion is not a strategy. However, understanding the data, identifying the probabilities versus possibilities, and maintaining risk controls are critical to success in 2026.

If you feel like shouting, “Screw you guys, I’m going home,” in the face of market moves, take a beat. Markets do not need your commitment; they reward discipline and patience.

In 2026, implement portfolio tactics to participate with the market if the bullish forecasts come to fruition, but protect your wealth in case they don’t.

Diversify beyond tech leaders: Shift allocations gradually toward underappreciated sectors, such as healthcare, industrials, energy, and consumer staples, which demonstrate earnings strength and stable demand.

Rebalance quarterly: Trim overextended positions, especially in momentum names. Reallocate into lagging but fundamentally sound assets.

Build cash buffers: Hold 5% to 15% in short‑duration cash equivalents to deploy during volatility or price dislocations.

Use tactical hedges: Add protective puts or inverse ETFs to limit downside on core equity holdings in concentrated portfolios.

Add exposure to high‑quality bonds: Reallocate from speculative credit into high‑grade corporate or Treasury ladders as yields remain favorable.

Favor earnings momentum over hype: Focus on stocks delivering real EPS growth over those driven by thematic speculation or valuation expansion alone.

Reduce concentration in crowded trades: Limit exposure to AI and mega‑cap tech where positioning is crowded and narrative risk is high.

Be cautious with international diversification: Developed market and emerging market ETFs are at risk of slower future growth and may be overvalued relative to their respective economies.

Adjust risk models for higher volatility: Updating drawdown expectations and rebalancing portfolio risk targets accordingly.

Track earnings revisions monthly: Stay nimble and reduce positions in companies issuing weaker forward guidance or showing margin compression.

Treat narratives as signals, not strategies: Use themes like AI, reshoring, or inflation narratives to inform ideas, but confirm with real data and balance sheet strength.

These actions position your portfolio for resilience, rather than reliance on a single scenario, while preserving flexibility to capitalize on market shifts throughout 2026. Like any complex system, markets blend risk and opportunity. Recognizing where probability exceeds speculation is the difference between reacting like Cartman and investing with purpose.

Stay informed, stay disciplined, and treat “chaos” as part of the landscape, not a reason to abandon the field.

That is how you navigate the market in 2026.

Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder on the FBI’s ‘Most Wanted’ list, has been arrested

WASHINGTON — Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder who was among the FBI’s most-wanted fugitives and faces charges related to drug trafficking and the killing of a federal witnesses, has been arrested, according to authorities.

Wedding was arrested Friday, according to two people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The arrest is expected to be announced later Friday morning at a news conference with FBI Director Kash Patel in California. Wedding was apprehended in Mexico, one of the officials said.

Wedding is accused of running a drug trafficking operation and officials say he orchestrated several killings to further the drug crimes. The former Olympian who competed for Canada was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list and authorities had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

The FBI released a new photo of Wedding last month and said it was believed to have been taken over the summer in Mexico.

UMich Sentiment Bounces To 5-Month High As Democrats Realize Their Insane Inflation Fears Were Wrong

UMich Sentiment Bounces To 5-Month High As Democrats Realize Their Insane Inflation Fears Were Wrong

Having ended 2025 at the lowest Current Conditions Sentiment levels in, well, ever… expectations for preliminary January data were for a modest rebound… and it did…notably more than expected (and a pick up from the flash print):

The preliminary January sentiment index climbed to 56.4 from 52.9 in December, according to the University of Michigan (better than the 54.0 expected and 54.0 flash print).

The expectations index rose to a six-month high of 55.4. The survey reflected improvements in both the short- and long-term economic outlooks.

The current conditions gauge climbed to a three-month high after slipping to a record-low in December. Consumers’ perception of their current financial situation improved in January, while expectations declined.

That is the best headline print since August (highest expectations since July)…

Source: Bloomberg

While the overall improvement was small, UMich Survey Director Joanne Hsu admits “it was broad based, seen across the income distribution, educational attainment, older and younger consumers, and Republicans and Democrats alike.”

Year-ahead inflation expectations fell back to 4.0% this month. This is the lowest reading since January 2025…

Source: Bloomberg

Uncertainty over short-run inflation expectations, as measured by the interquartile range of responses, has fallen from mid-2025 but has remained considerably elevated in recent months, comparable to levels seen in 2022

Source: Bloomberg

And it appears that Democrats have come to their senses over the fears of runaway Trump tariff inflation…

Source: Bloomberg

Aside from tariff policy, consumers do not appear to be connecting foreign developments to their views of the economy. Hsu notes that interviews for this release concluded on January 19th, two days after Trump’s social media post announcing additional tariffs on eight countries in Europe.
