Asked to play tough, Micah Evans provides answer and more for Lincoln-Way Central. ‘If I score, it’s a bonus.’
Lincoln-Way Central’s Micah Evans has a job description that sounds simple but it’s pretty tough.
The 6-foot-4 senior forward is tasked with being a bruiser in the lane.
“My job is to be the toughest guy out there,” Evans said of his embracing a team-first role for the Knights. “I need to be strong inside and make it easy for the other guys.
“If I score, it’s a bonus.”
Evans provided plenty of bonus points Saturday. He scored eight points to go with 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots in a 49-44 nonconference win over host Oak Forest.
Nick Brzezniak led Lincoln-Way Central (14-6) with 12 points, while Mark Ziesmer added nine off the bench. Alex Panos scored nine points in the first half but did not return after being injured.

Panos, a senior guard, exited with 2:59 remaining in the second quarter with a left ankle injury. The Knights sat him the rest of the game as a precautionary measure. He should be back soon.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries and sickness this year,” Lincoln-Way Central coach Brian Flaherty said. “I think it’s going to pay off down the road because a lot of players are getting experience.”
Gary Manso and Aiden Barnett each scored 12 points for Oak Forest (15-7), which trailed 21-4 early in the second quarter before chipping away at the deficit. The Bengals couldn’t get closer than the final score.
Evans, meanwhile, wants to wrap things up with a big push at the end of the season. He’s giving up up basketball to pursue an education degree at Illinois State.

He said he hopes to land a job as a team manager for the Redbirds.
“He’s one of a kind,” Flaherty said of Evans. “I could coach until I retire and not have another kid like that. I’ve never had a player like him in my 25 years of coaching.”
Flaherty pointed out that Evans is a “Renaissance man” who has a ton of varied interests. He’s involved in several clubs at Lincoln-Way Central.
And that tough guy persona? It stays on the court.

“A lot of people get the wrong idea about him,” Flaherty said of Evans. “They see him on the court playing physical, and off the court, he is one of the nicest people you would want to meet.”
Ziesmer, who was playing his second game back after suffering an injury in football, also appreciates Evans’ vocal leadership during practices and games.
In the third quarter Saturday, Evans went up to block a shot and was called for a foul. He believed that he had all ball on the sequence.
“I thought it was a play that I could put on my highlight film,” Evans said.
Afterward, Evans’ eyes got wide and his mouth formed into a big O. He calmed down, however, because he didn’t want to show up the officials.
Evans actually spends time umpiring youth games.

When he was named student of the month for August-September at Lincoln-Way Central, English teacher Brianna Korczak wrote about Evans’ calm demeanor when nominating him.
“During a playoff game last spring, an adult fan was loud and rude about a call,” she wrote. “Micah handled himself with grace and addressed the fan firmly but fairly.
“The parents sitting around me were impressed by his poise and how he dealt with the situation.”
That’s why he cut short his reaction in the heat of the moment after the foul against Oak Forest.
“I know what it’s like to be on that side of it,” Evans said. “I thought it was a block. He saw it as a foul. It was called a foul, so it was a foul. There’s no need for drama.”

President Trump To Skip Super Bowl, Slams Halftime Show With Bad Bunny, Green Day
Trump made history last year as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl when he showed up at the game in New Orleans, but on Saturday, he announced he won’t be attending this year.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump blasted the NFL for choosing Bad Bunny and Green Day as halftime performers. Trump told the New York Post that the halftime act represents “a terrible choice” that only serves to “sow hatred.” He confirmed his absence from the game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, though he insisted the artists are not the reason. “It’s just too far away,” Trump said, adding that he would attend “if it was a little bit shorter.”
The president made his feelings about the performers clear. “I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible,” Trump declared.
Trump blasted the NFL back in October when Bad Bunny was selected to headline the halftime show.
“The NFL just chose the Bad Bunny rabbit or whatever his name is,” Greg Kelly of NewsmaxTV told him. “This guy, who hates ICE, he doesn’t like you, he accuses everything he doesn’t like of racism.”
Kelly added, “This guy does not seem like a unifying entertainer, and a lot of folks don’t even know who he is.”
“I’ve never heard of him,” Trump said. “I don’t know who he is.”
He nevertheless criticized the selection. “I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment— I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Bad Bunny was “the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2025, but he said he avoided bringing his Debi Tirar Mas Fotos World Tour to the continental United States due to concerns that ICE would target his concerts.”
“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” the musician said last year “All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the U.S. But there was the issue of, like, f—ing ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
Last year, a Cygnal poll showed support for Trump’s deportation of illegal immigrants surged with Hispanic voters.
“Among Hispanic voters, 50 percent supported deportations and 48 percent opposed,” Newsweek reported in July. “There was a seven percent increase in overall support since May among this demographic, with an 11 percent rise among those who said they ‘strongly support’ the policy.”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced last year that ICE would blanket the Super Bowl. “We’re going to be all over that place,” Noem told Benny Johnson in October, declaring that only “law-abiding Americans who cherish this country” should attend. She added that agents would “enforce the law.”
Green Day has made attacking Donald Trump a recurring feature of its performances for nearly a decade. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has altered lyrics in “American Idiot” to target “MAGA,” displayed a Trump mask labeled “IDIOT” at a 2024 Washington, D.C., concert, and led anti-Trump chants during televised award shows. Armstrong has also compared Trump to Adolf Hitler in interviews.
Turning Point USA, the conservative group founded by Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed in September 2025 during an event at Utah Valley University in September, announced it would stage an alternative “All-American Halftime Show” to counter Bad Bunny’s performance. Spokesperson Andrew Kolvet said in October that the counter-show would be “a real production” held in an arena.
The organization has not revealed any performers or details about its halftime show, despite the game taking place in less than three weeks. Public relations manager Aubrey Laitsch told TMZ in January that the show is confirmed, but fans must tune in during the Super Bowl to learn the lineup.

Donald Trump, unbowed by backlash to Minneapolis shooting, blames Democrats for ‘chaos’
WASHINGTON — The fatal shooting of a Minneapolis protester by a federal immigration officer touched off a fierce national debate and prompted some fellow Republicans to question President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration crackdown, but the president on Sunday night continued to blame Democratic officials.
After remaining relatively quiet on Sunday, the Republican president in two lengthy social media posts said that Democrats had encouraged people to obstruct law enforcement operations. He also called on officials in Minnesota to work with immigration officers and “turn over” people who were in the U.S. illegally.
“Tragically, two American Citizens have lost their lives as a result of this Democrat ensued chaos,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media network.
Trump’s refusal to back away from his pledge to carry out the largest deportation program in history and the surge of immigration officers to heavily Democratic cities came as more Republicans began calling for a deeper investigation and expressing unease with some of the administration’s tactics.
Trump also told The Wall Street Journal in an interview Sunday that his administration was “reviewing everything,” but he refused to say whether the officer who shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti acted appropriately.
“We’re looking, we’re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination,” Trump said.
The White House did not answer questions about whether Trump watched the videos of the shooting in Minnesota, which seemed to contradict the account of what happened by members of his administration, or whether he planned to speak to Minnesota’s Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who had appealed to the president to help bring calm to the city.
Instead, Trump on Sunday night said he would call on Congress to pass legislation banning so-called sanctuary cities. His administration has sought to apply the label to communities based on their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement efforts, among other factors.
His push for action by lawmakers comes even as outrage over the shooting has raised the possibility of a partial government shutdown in a week because of a standoff over additional funding for immigration enforcement.
Trump’s initial reaction to the shooting of Pretti came hours after it took place on Saturday. In a post on his Truth Social network, he questioned why Pretti had a firearm and accused Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of inciting “Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric.”
But throughout the weekend, Trump, who rarely lets a major moment go without comment, did not make any public appearances or express any dismay over Pretti’s death.
Instead, he posted online complaining about Canada and efforts to stop him from building an expansive ballroom at the White House, calling a lawsuit to block its construction “devastating to the White House, our Country, and all concerned.”
He also posted messages praising U.K. troops after his comments about them earlier in the week were widely interpreted as a grave insult and praising guests appearing on Fox News Channel.
When he finally weighed in again Sunday night as criticism grew, Trump was unbowed.
He called on Walz and Frey, also a Democrat, to turn over for deportation anyone in the country illegally who was held in state prisons or local jails, along with anyone who has a warrant out for their arrest or a criminal history.
In his comments to The Wall Street Journal, Trump criticized Pretti for carrying a gun.
“I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” Trump said. “But I don’t like it when somebody goes into a protest and he’s got a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines loaded up with bullets also. That doesn’t play good either.”
He said that immigration enforcement officers will leave Minneapolis “at some point” but did not offer a time frame.
Members of his administration, meanwhile, were quick to say the shooting, the second killing of a U.S. citizen in Minneapolis by immigration officers in recent weeks, was a case of an armed man provoking violence.
Deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller said in a post on social media, without offering any evidence, that Pretti was “an assassin” who “tried to murder federal agents.”
Vice President JD Vance shared Miller’s post. He issued other ones blaming local officials and describing what was happening in Minneapolis as “engineered chaos” that was “the direct consequence of far left agitators, working with local authorities.”

Supreme Court Orders CA Dems To Justify ‘Prop 50’ Maps

The Supreme Court on Thursday gave California Democrats a week to respond to the California Republican Party’s request to block the new Democrat-drawn congressional district maps from being used in November.
The request for a response, issued by Justice Elena Kagan, who is handling the emergency-injunction request for the court, surprised many court watchers.
Given that the justices allowed Texas Republicans’ gerrymandered map to stand, most thought the Supreme Court would allow the Los Angeles district court’s ruling earlier this month, validating California’s new map to stand as well. California Republicans, however, argue that the new maps violate the Voting Rights Act because at least one of the districts was written to favor Latino voters.
The California Republican Party, joined by the Justice Department, Tuesday filed an emergency application at the Supreme Court in hopes of blocking the state from using the newly approved district maps, which target four to six Republican members of Congress, in the 2026 elections.
The request for a response is just that, however. The Supreme Court could still decline to take up the case. The high court is already deliberating over a voting rights case in Louisiana, the decision in which could impact its decision on the California map. In October, arguments concluded in a landmark voting rights case, Louisiana v. Callais, that will determine whether Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map, which includes a second majority black district, is an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. A high court decision is expected any day.
On Thursday, Mark Meuser, the election law attorney with the Dhillon Law Group who filed the challenge to the maps on behalf of the California Republican Party, celebrated Kagan’s order for California Democrats to respond by 4 p.m. Jan. 29.
“Supreme Court just ordered California to respond to our Emergency Application for an Injunction,” Meuser said in an X.com post. “California must respond by Jan. 29.”
In his brief supporting California Republicans, Solicitor General John Sauer underscored their argument, writing that “California’s recent redistricting is tainted by an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.”
The Supreme Court has allowed gerrymandering, and in the Texas case, approved mid-decade redistricting undertaken specifically to win more seats for Republicans purely for partisan gain. It has not, however, looked favorably on redistricting efforts undertaken to consolidate racial minorities’ power.
“But unlike Texas’s map, the [California] map suffers from a fatal constitutional flaw: one of the districts (District 13) was clearly drawn ‘on the basis of race,’” Sauer wrote in his amicus brief.
The California GOP asked the Supreme Court to rule on its injunction request by Feb. 9, when congressional candidate filing in California begins. The party also asked the justices to schedule oral arguments in the underlying case.
The Supreme Court approved Texas’s map, drawn with an eye toward winning Republicans five more seats in the Lone Star state, last month. California Democrats, led by California Gov. Newsom, aim to offset that with a map that could net Democrats five additional seats.
The national Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ political action committees then paid consultant Paul Mitchell to redraw the state’s 52 congressional districts. Newsom, arguing that Democrats must fight President Trump’s efforts to rewrite congressional maps in Republicans’ favor, then called a special election last November, asking voters to approve it.
Proposition 50, as the ballot initiative was called, overwhelmingly passed with 64% of the vote.
Newsom on Thursday didn’t address Kagan’s move but commented on the larger issue in a tweet posted Thursday.
“Donald Trump called up [Texas Gov.] Greg Abbott and demanded more MAGA seats in Congress,” Newsom posted on X.com from Davos, Switzerland. “He thought we’d be good little Democrats and respond with an op-ed. Not this time, buddy.”
“I’m not naïve. These guys are going to try to take me down – not just my state,” Newsom added during an interview at the glitzy international economic gathering of world leaders.
A three-judge panel from the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California rejected Republicans’ racial claims in their Jan. 14 order denying the state GOP’s petition.
“Challengers now seek to enjoin California’s use of the Proposition 50 Map, arguing that the predominant reason for its adoption was not politics but rather unconstitutional and unlawful racial gerrymandering,” the judges wrote.
“We have reviewed briefing from all parties, held a 3-day evidentiary hearing with 9 witnesses (including 6 experts), and reviewed a record that includes over 500 exhibits totaling thousands of pages … We find that [the] challengers have failed to show that racial gerrymandering occurred, and we conclude that there is no basis for issuing a preliminary injunction.”

A Cuban diplomat has accused Washington of “international piracy” as the US moves to choke off Venezuelan oil supplies to the island following the Jan.3rd Pentagon operation that led to the ouster and abduction of President Nicolás Maduro.
Carlos de Céspedes, Cuba’s ambassador to Colombia, told Al Jazeera on Saturday that the United States has effectively imposed a “marine siege” on Cuba and that this is the most threatening and serious action imposed by Washington in decades.
“Cuba is facing more powerful US threats than it has in the 67 years since the revolution,” de Céspedes said, after the island-nation has already endured decades of sanctions.
Washington is openly blocking fuel shipments in the Caribbean, he described. “The US is carrying out international piracy in the Caribbean Sea that is restricting and blocking the arrival of oil to Cuba.”
Havana receives an estimated 35,000 barrels of oil a day from its longtime ally Venezuela, and the Cuban foreign ministry has also respond by saying every country has a right to import fuel “without interference” and that “no one dictates what we do.”
President Trump first unveiled the pressure campaign on January 5: “Cuba is ready to fall. Cuba now has no income. They got all of their income from Venezuela, from the Venezuelan oil. They’re not getting any of it. Cuba literally is ready to fall.”
Oil flows from Venezuela to Cuba have virtually already collapsed at this point. But the US administration is still yet weighing a full energy blockade against Cuba, which could unleash humanitarian catastrophe. Politico details of an economy and population under immense pressure:
Conditions on the island have indeed worsened, triggering blackouts and shortages of basic goods and food products. But the regime has weathered harsh U.S. sanctions — and the sweeping trade embargo — for decades and survived the fall of the Soviet Union after the Cold War. Meanwhile, concerns remain that the sudden collapse of the Cuban government would trigger a regional migration crisis and destabilize the Caribbean.
Critics of the Cuban government will likely celebrate the proposal if implemented by the White House. Hawkish Republicans had already embraced the idea of completely blocking Cuba’s access to oil.
Likely there is ratcheting paranoia within the halls of power in Havana at this very moment. We detailed earlier that the White House is also working to identify people inside the Cuban government who could be ripe for making a deal in which they use their position to help oust the current leadership, including President and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel.
This would be along the lines of a ‘Venezuela model’ – but it is also the case that Cuban intelligence is a lot more experienced in dealing with the American adversary, after many decades of being locked in a shadow war and fight for survival.

QUITO (AP) — El subsecretario de Guerra de Estados Unidos, Joshep M. Humire, sostuvo el domingo una reunión con autoridades ecuatorianas en Quito, en la que abordaron la acción conjunta en el combate al crimen transnacional y el refuerzo de la seguridad fronteriza.
“Es una señal clara que se vienen operaciones importantes que van a atacar la economía ilegal, principalmente el narcotráfico”, manifestó el ministro del Interior ecuatoriano, John Reimberg, en declaraciones a la prensa tras concluir la cita.
La cooperación estadounidense también se enfocará en la protección de la frontera norte con Colombia, agregó Reimberg. No se proporcionaron más detalles.
Humire no hizo declaraciones públicas.
En la frontera colombo-ecuatoriana, de más de 600 kilómetros (372 millas) de longitud, operan grupos armados ilegales colombianos en asociación con bandas criminales locales del lado ecuatoriano, las cuales se dedican al narcotráfico, la minería ilegal, la trata de personas, extorsiones y otros delitos.
La visita del alto funcionario estadounidense se mantuvo en reserva hasta pocas horas antes del encuentro en la casa presidencial. Se llevó a cabo en medio de una puja comercial entre Ecuador y Colombia, luego del reclamo del gobierno ecuatoriano por la supuesta falta de cooperación de Bogotá en el control de la frontera común.
El presidente colombiano Gustavo Petro dijo la víspera que está dispuesto a dialogar con Ecuador, pero pidió darle prioridad a una política conjunta para el control de los puertos marítimos, desde los cuales se trafican drogas y otras sustancias.
