Investigan ataque armado en campo de fútbol del centro de México que dejó al menos 11 muertos

SALAMANCA, México (AP) — Envases de cerveza, ropa con aparentes restos de sangre y algunas veladoras permanecían el lunes esparcidos por un campo de fútbol local del municipio de Salamanca, una localidad del estado de Guanajuato, en el centro de México, donde el domingo murieron al menos 11 personas y otras 12 resultaron heridas cuando individuos armados dispararon contra la gente que pasaba la tarde en el lugar tarde después de un partido.
Mientras la fiscalía local investiga lo ocurrido, la gobernadora de Guanajuato, Libia Dennise García, aseguró el lunes en sus redes sociales que “la seguridad en la región ha sido reforzada” con fuerzas estatales y federales.
“El Estado actuará con firmeza para proteger a las familias, recuperar la tranquilidad de la comunidad y dar con los responsables”, indicó.
Sin embargo, el campo de fútbol privado y de tierra, situado unos 300 kilómetros al noroeste de la capital mexicana, estaba el lunes por la mañana sin ningún tipo tipo de seguridad y con la Guardia Nacional haciendo rondas esporádicas, según constató The Associated Press.
El suceso es uno de los peores ataques indiscriminados contra la población de esta administración y tuvo lugar en el estado con más homicidios del país y una región de intensa violencia vinculada a la disputa territorial entre el cártel local de Santa Rosa de Lima —un grupo muy violento y dedicado principalmente al robo y tráfico de combustible— y el Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).
Según dijo el domingo el alcalde de Salamanca, César Prieto, el único que dio detalles de lo ocurrido, el ataque es parte de la “ola de violencia” que vive la zona y de la existencia de “grupos criminales tratando de someter a la autoridad”.
Ocurre, además, a pocos meses del inicio de la Copa del Mundo de Fútbol en México —coanfitrión del torno junto a Canadá y Estados Unidos— y mientras el gobierno de Claudia Sheinbaum no solo quiere enfatizar sus avances en seguridad sino que intenta promocionar el fútbol local y de base.
Justo el lunes, durante la conferencia presidencial matutina, se anunciaba la celebración de 74 “mundialitos” por todo el país como “herramienta poderosa para el desarrollo integral” de la población, según destacó la secretaria de Gobernación, Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
La presidenta no se pronunció sobre lo sucedido en Salamanca y se remitió a lo que informará la fiscalía local, que el domingo se limitó a condenar lo sucedido e indicar que ya investigaba el tema, sin aportar mayores detalles.
Las autoridades no han ofrecido hipótesis sobre el posible móvil del ataque.
El analista de Seguridad David Saucedo, que durante años tuvo su base en Guanajuato, indicó que las primeras informaciones que han trascendido de testigos parecen indicar que fue un ataque que no se dirigía a ninguna persona.
En su opinión, parece que fue ejecutado por miembros del Cartel de Santa Rosa que querían “provocar el arribo de fuerzas estatales y federales” a esa zona bajo control de su enemigo, el cártel de Jalisco.
Según Saucedo, el ataque “echa por tierra la imagen que México quiere proyectar de una coordinación y un combate y contención de la violencia homicida, justo en la víspera de la realización de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol”.
El cártel de Jalisco es la organización criminal en mayor expansión en México, declarada como terrorista por la administración de Donald Trump, que también puso en la mira al cártel de Santa Rosa de Lima.
De acuerdon con el Departamento del Tesoro, las acciones de este grupo “contribuyen a la existencia de un mercado negro transfronterizo de energía, socavan a las empresas legítimas de petróleo y gas natural de Estados Unidos, y privan al gobierno mexicano de ingresos fundamentales” al robar miles de millones de dólares a Petróleos Méxicanos, la energética estatal mexicana.
De hecho, el alcalde de Salamanca recordó que la semana pasada hubo una amenaza con un artefacto explosivo en las instalaciones de Pemex que fue desactivado sin causar daños.
Candidato republicano renuncia a candidatura en Minnesota, critica política migratoria de Trump

Agregó que es inconstitucional e incorrecto que los policías “allanaran hogares” usando una orden civil, en lugar de una emitida por un juez.
Madel estaba entre un gran grupo de candidatos que buscaban reemplazar al gobernador demócrata Tim Walz, quien abandonó su candidatura a la reelección a principios de este mes. Historic St. Charles home to be landmarked, rehabilitated with TIF assistance
A historic St. Charles home that was previously being considered for demolition is going to remain standing — and be rehabilitated and landmarked — after an agreement was recently reached among the city, the local church that owns the property and a developer who plans to buy and restore it.
Owned by Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, the house at 217 Cedar Ave. for years faced an uncertain future, as its owner pursued city approval to tear it down and reuse the space.
The house is also referred to as the Judge William D. Barry House, for its original owner. Barry was a lawyer, a Kane County judge around the time of the Civil War and the first president of the Kane County Bar Association, who may have known Abraham Lincoln, officials have said.
Because it’s located within the city’s Historic District, exterior changes to the building — including demolition — require city approval. The church previously brought a request about the property to the city in 2017, but its application was withdrawn before the City Council could vote on the house’s fate.
Baker Memorial also owns the building at 211-215 Cedar Ave. and the parking lots to the south, west and north. The city’s Historic Preservation Commission in 2017 OK’d the demolition of the house at 211-215 Cedar Ave., but not the house at 217 Cedar Ave.
Then, the matter came back to the city last year, with the church again seeking demolition of the Barry House. Its pitch revolved around turning the property into parking spaces, citing a need for additional parking in the area, its financial situation and other concerns.
The council ultimately denied the church’s request for demolition in August. St. Charles Mayor Clint Hull at the time indicated that the city was going to continue working with the church to determine a solution.
In an interview Thursday, Hull explained that a buyer could not be found who was willing to pay the full appraised value of the property, but that city staff members continued to look for a solution. They eventually landed on subsidizing the costs for a potential buyer using funds from the city’s downtown tax increment financing, or TIF, district, which the Barry House lies within.
A TIF district is a sort of economic development incentive, in which the value of a property is essentially frozen, and the extra or “increment” taxes created by developing the property go into a special fund used to pay for costs related to improving the area.
“It was really just … a lack of willingness to accept that there wasn’t a path forward,” Hull said. “They (city staff) just kept digging and digging.”

Under the new agreement, Geneva Heights LLC — better known as local developer Bob Rasmussen — will buy the Barry House and the house next to it from Baker Memorial for a total of $525,000 and restore the Barry House “to historic standards,” with $125,000 from the city to help with the costs, explained St. Charles Economic Development Director Derek Conley at the city’s Jan. 12 Planning and Development Committee meeting. The city will also offer up to $50,000 for the developer if he is able to restore the building’s facade to its original stone condition.
The developer is also agreeing to landmark the house as part of the agreement.
Additionally, the city will construct at least 10 angled parking spaces along the church to alleviate some of its parking concerns, according to Conley. That cost has been estimated at around $250,000, per city documents, for which TIF funds would also be used. Final designs for the parking will still have to be approved by the City Council.
Hull indicated that the parking spaces were not a point of opposition from the city, as it is “always looking for ways to be able to create more spots,” but the church’s requests essentially pushed forward the city taking on this particular project.
According to the redevelopment agreement between the city, church and developer, the parking will be public parking at all times except for Sundays between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., when the church will have exclusive use of the spaces.
A final occupancy permit for the Barry House must be issued on or before May 1, 2027, per the agreement, or the city has the right to claw back any disbursed grant funds. It also has the right to ask for funds back if the total eligible improvement costs are less than the total amount provided by the city.
“This is a true … win-win-win situation,” Ald. Steve Weber said at the Jan. 12 meeting. “I know that not everybody wanted this to happen. I am really glad that it … did happen.”
Ald. Jayme Muenz expressed her gratitude to the church for “being willing to work with (the city) on this,” as this “was not the beginning of what they had asked for, and … they’ve been willing to understand what some of the needs of the community are too.”
Conley, at the Jan. 12 meeting, noted that the city also has the potential to gain some funds back in the way of property taxes from this plan — currently, the properties don’t generate any property tax money for the city because the church does not have to pay property taxes. He estimated each house would likely pay $7,000 to $8,000 annually in property taxes, a significant portion of which will go back into the TIF funds, the source of the grant money.
After securing approval from the Planning and Development Committee, the matter went to the City Council last Tuesday for a vote and received final approval.
Hull, on Thursday, said he’s “so proud of” everyone involved in the agreement.
“At some point, maybe … everybody throws up their hands and says … we tried, and we can’t do it,” he said. “But that never, it never stopped.”
Baker Memorial’s pastor, the Rev. David Aslesen, told The Beacon-News on Thursday that the past six months have been focused on coming to some sort of partnership agreement that would satisfy the church’s needs and preserve the historic Barry House property.
“I think it’s a great … solution,” Aslesen told The Beacon-News on Thursday. “We’re glad for what can be a new chapter for the houses. And we’re, as a congregation, appreciative … of the mayor’s efforts and the City Council to help us sort out all the legal issues and financial issues.”
Rasmussen, in an email, said that he and his business partner are going to attempt to bring back the exterior of the Barry House to its original stone, and rehabilitate the interior so it can serve as a single-family rental. He also reiterated his intent to landmark the building so that it “will never again be at risk.”
In a statement provided to The Beacon-News, the Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley — which has been involved in talks about the preservation of the Barry House when it came to the City Council last year — said that “this solution … is a model for other communities on how patience, determination and collaboration among a city, community and property owner can reactivate a historic structure that had been vacant for many years.”
Hull offered a similar sentiment.
“I know that the city, our residents and especially our council place a very high value on preserving our history,” Hull said, pointing to the history museum in the city and residents who are active in preservation efforts. “This isn’t an afterthought … it’s something that we’re actively seeking to do.”
Still, it remains a careful balance between growth and preservation.
“The goal in the city of St. Charles is that we can do both, right?” Hull asked. “We can continue to grow and at the same time preserve the history that makes St. Charles so special.”

Forecasts of a massive oil glut are seriously exaggerated as demand keeps rising and global stocks are below the five-year average, according to Saudi Aramco’s chief executive officer, Amin Nasser.
“Oil glut predictions are seriously exaggerated,” Nasser said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week as carried by Reuters.
Global oil stocks are low, while the amassed barrels in floating storage on tankers are mostly sanctioned supplies, the CEO of the world’s biggest oil firm and top crude exporter said.
Moreover, spare capacity has dwindled over the past year, also limiting potential efforts to boost output in case of major supply disruptions, according to Nasser.
“It (spare capacity) is at 2.5% and we need a minimum of 3%. If OPEC+ further unwinds cuts, spare capacity will fall even further and we will need to watch this very carefully,” Aramco’s top executive said.
The market is oversupplied, analysts say, as reflected in only brief spikes in oil prices in recent weeks driven the geopolitical developments.
Most investment banks and the EIA forecast that average oil prices will be below $60 per barrel in 2026 due to an emerging and persistent market oversupply, especially during the first half of the year.
But OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, insists that the market would be balanced as demand growth is robust and will remain such in 2027, too.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) this week raised its oil demand growth estimate and expects growth at 930,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2026, up by 70,000 bpd from last month’s assessment.
The upgrade reflects a recovery in feedstock demand in the petrochemicals industry, on top of expectations of normalized economic conditions after the unpredictable and chaotic tariff policy of the Trump Administration last year.
But the market continues to be oversupplied, the Paris-based agency noted.
“Indeed, benchmark crude oil prices remain $16/bbl lower than a year ago, reflecting the large global supply surplus that built up over the past 12 months, in line with our forecasts,” the IEA said.

Loop the Cart helping effort to enhance Lake County recycling: ‘Hopefully, it will … reach the entire household’
A small blue recycling bin with arms, eyes and a big mouth, known as Loop the Cart, is making its way around Waukegan to help educate residents about numerous items which can be recycled, those which cannot and some that require special handling.
A joint effort of the city of Waukegan, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham said Friday the program is aimed at young people as well as adults.
“We believe Loop the Cart will help get schoolkids involved,” Cunningham said, “When his head pops up, it appeals to kids of that age. Hopefully, it will overlap and reach the entire household.”
Loop the Cart is currently making the rounds to different locations around Waukegan, including the city’s Public Works Department, letting people know what a recycling cart can consume and what requires a different form of disposal.
Cunningham said as discussions took place among members of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, there was agreement on an effort to get more recyclable items recycled. Members engaged SWALCO, and the use of Loop the Cart was introduced to enhance the effort.
“We want to increase the collection of recyclables and reduce the contamination in Waukegan,” Cunningham said. “There are some people who were not recycling at all.”

Starting a program in October to make people aware of items which can be recycled, SWALCO began using people to walk door to door in Waukegan and Zion — it will do the same in North Chicago this spring — checking the bins and gently letting people know how to change what they put where.
Emily Wachter, a communications associate with SWALCO, said Friday that while the canvassing approach was making some progress, an additional method might be helpful. Enter Loop the Cart.
“It’s a positive message about recycling,” Wachter said of personifying Loop the Cart and when people should “feed” him. “The image of this campaign is to be helpful about what can be recycled. We’re showcasing it now in Waukegan.”
Wachter said Loop the Cart makes it clear what he can and cannot eat. Items like electronics, batteries, household chemicals, food, yard waste, clothing, textiles and tires are on the list of inedibles. There are still ways to keep them out of landfills.
Making a visit to Loop the Cart’s website — feedthecart.org — will give people a good idea of what can go in a recycle bin and what cannot. People in Highland Park can put food scraps and yard waste in a compost bin for pickup, but that service is not available in Waukegan.
Once at the website, Wachter said people can enter their town, and they will learn what kind of pickup is available and what they must do themselves if they want to keep things like electronics out of a landfill.
Electronics disposal sites are available at the Grayslake Public Works facility, on Half Day Road in Highland Patk and at LRS’s facility in Wauconda. Wachter said Waukegan residents can take tires to the public works facility there, but it is only for people who live in the city.
Individuals who need to get rid of household chemicals can go to a drop-off location in Gurnee. Wachter said SWALCO regularly has pop-up events for a variety of items that recycling haulers will not take.

Previamente, Antetokounmpo se perdió ocho juegos del 5 al 26 de diciembre debido a una distensión en la pantorrilla derecha. Las distensiones en su pantorrilla izquierda le hicieron perderse los playoffs de 2024 y el Juego de Estrellas de 2025.

Antetokounmpo reconoció el viernes que se habría retirado de ese juego mucho antes si los Bucks tuvieran un récord significativamente mejor. En cambio, jugó 32 minutos y logró 22 puntos, 13 rebotes y siete asistencias.
“Creo que habla mucho de su carácter y de quién es como persona y jugador”, expresó el alero Bobby Portis.
Antetokounmpo ha promediado 28 puntos, 10 rebotes y 5,6 asistencias en 30 juegos esta temporada.
Los Bucks también han disputado sus últimos dos partidos sin Kevin Porter Jr., el segundo máximo anotador, debido a una distensión en el oblicuo. Rivers dijo que aún no hay indicios de cuándo Porter podría volver.

At the same time, the volume of outstanding paper contracts in London and New York now vastly exceeds the amount of physical silver available for delivery.
Von Greyerz warns that this imbalance marks a critical turning point, as silver transitions away from a manipulated paper-based system into a genuinely physical market, where price is ultimately set by scarcity, not leverage.

…this is a fundamental change. Some viewers might remember the late 1970s when silver quickly climbed from a few dollars up to $50. This was primarily speculation by the Hunt Brothers.
[01:44.7] And of course, the market could quickly sell enough paper silver to crash the price. And it didn’t stay long at $50. This time, any selling that is attempted by bullion banks fails ,and we’ve seen many times being sold in the evening and, within a few hours, it’s back up again.
[02:06.0] And this has happened last week again. Friday evening was sold off and then quickly went up to $90. I think we’re quickly going to see $100 and more already in the Far East and in Australia, like the Perth Mint, selling now silver at over $100.
[02:25.0] So the price in London and in New York will have to follow. So what does that mean for the ordinary investors? Well, it clearly means that silver is just starting the move, and we are going to see, as I have stressed many times, we are going to see multiples of the current price.
[02:44.8] Will it correct? Of course, silver always corrects, but this is not a normal market because it’s now turned into a physical market, which is it should always be rather than the manipulation that we have seen in paper markets. [03:00.0] So physical demand has gone from 10% of production to now 50% in the last year. That is a massive increase in demand, obviously stemming from solar panels, electric cars, electrical products, electronic products and also of course from defence contracts.
[03:18.4] Every missile uses quite a lot of silver, and all other electronic products and weapons use a big amount of silver now. So the demand is there on the physical side, and the demand is there on the investment side, and the production just isn’t there.
To satisfy this demand, we’ve had deficits for the last five years. Those deficits are going to increase. This is why there will be constant demand for silver, and it is probable in the next year or two that there’ll be failure in some markets. Whether that will be in the London market, and some bullion bank will go under. Whether that will be on Comex, we don’t know.
[03:53.9] But the risk is very high.
So it is obviously absolutely important for investors to hold nothing but physical silver, buy physical and hold it outside the banking system, not within the banking system. Don’t buy ETFs, don’t buy any futures, hold physical silver and keep it in a safe storage, in a safe vault like we do for clients, and keep it outside the banking system.
[04:19.7] Now, there are of course many other factors that influence the price of the metals. Gold is also going up, but as I have made clear for quite a while, silver will go twice as fast as gold in the coming years. Now the gold-silver ratio has gone from over 100 to about 50.
[04:36.4] Now the long-term ratio is probably going to be around the 15 level initially, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see even lower than that, that being a natural level. But now I think the demand is of such magnitude and the supply so minuscule.

Now I’m absolutely convinced we’ll see $10,000 for gold. What does that mean for silver? If you take the gold-silver ratio at 15, which is an historical quite important level, then you divide 10,000 by 15, you get 666.
[05:38.3] So, a minimum we would see with silver, in my view, is $666.

But remember, you are not buying silver or gold for speculative purposes or to make money.
[08:16.2] You are buying it to protect your wealth against the total destruction of wealth that we’re going to see in the next few years. That is a destruction of paper wealth that is now, at levels which are unprecedented in history, because money printing has been unprecedented, and lending has been unprecedented.
[08:35.2] Countries will go bust, banks will go bust in America, in Europe. Whether it’s due to property market, whether it’s commercial markets, or people not being able to pay their loans, it doesn’t matter. Many banks will go under. Governments and central banks are going to print unlimited amounts of money, and therefore, the value of your dollar, your euro or your pound is going to collapse.
[08:58.6] And that would be reflected in a much higher gold price…

Stellar 2Y Trasury Auction: Surge In Indirects & Bid-To-Cover; Second Lowest Dealers On Record
The first coupon auction of the week just took place, and it could not have gone any better.
According to the US Treasury, $69BN of 2 Year paper was just sold at a high yield of 3.580%, up from the 3.499% in December, and stopped through the When Issued 3.594% by 1.4bps, the biggest stop through since August.
The bid to cover jumped to 2.750, up from 2.543 and the highest since Nov 2024 (the six-auction average was 2.61).
The internals were even stronger: Indirects took down 64.4%, a big jump from 53.2% in December and the highest since March 2025. And with Directs awarded 28.3%, Dealers were left with just 7.3%, the second lowest on record (only Feb 2025 was lower).
Overall, this was a stellar auction and clearly there were no jitters head of Wednesday’s FOMC decision, where prevailing consensus is that the Fed will be more hawkish.
Ahead of the auction, the UBS desk thought 2s looked to be locally cheap on outright terms and that the recent flattening had also introduced some value, albeit marginal, on the curve. The market is rallying on the follow.

BASILEA, Suiza (AP) — El campeón suizo Basilea despidió el lunes al técnico Ludovic Magnin, tres días antes de un partido decisivo en la ronda final de la Liga Europa.
Magnin fue destituido al día siguiente de una victoria 4-3 contra su clásico rival Zúrich en la que su figura Xherdan Shaqiri completó una tripleta en el tiempo de descuento.
La derrota 3-1 de visita a Salzburgo el jueves pasado en la Liga Europa precepitó el despido del ex lateral izquierdo suizo tras una etapa de apenas siete meses.
Basilea señaló en un comunicado que el rendimiento del equipo se había estancado y que el esperado cambio de rumbo tras el receso de invierno no se había producido. No se nombró a un entrenador interino.
Magnin dejó a Basilea en el cuarto lugar de la liga suiza, a 10 puntos del inesperado líder Thun.
