Canadian Woman Euthanized ‘Against Her Will’ After Husband Reported ‘Caregiver Burnout’
A Canadian woman in her 80s was euthanized ‘against her will’ through Canada’s medical assistance in dying program (MAiD), after her elderly husband told doctors she had changed her mind despite telling an assessor she wanted to live, according to a report released by the Office of the Chief Coroner.
MAiD allows patients to request a painless death if an assessor agrees that they have a terminal condition which meets certain requirements. While most patients wait weeks for a decision, euthanasia can be performed as soon as the same-day if deemed medically urgent by a MAiD provider.
According to the report by the Ontario MAiD Death Review Committee, concerns have been raised over questionable deaths.
In this case, the woman – referred to as “Mrs. B,” had complications after a coronary artery bypass graft surgery. After a rapid decline, she opted for palliative care – and was sent home from the hospital for her husband to take care of her. As her condition worsened, the husband struggled to care for her despite visits by nurses.
After she allegedly expressed her desire for MAiD to her family, her husband called a referral service, the report reads. Yet, Mrs. B told the assessor she ‘wanted to withdraw her requests, citing personal and religious values and beliefs,” and instead wanted inpatient hospice care.
When her husband took her to the hospital the next morning, doctors deemed Mrs. B to be stable, but that her husband was “experiencing caregiver burnout.” A request by a doctor for in-patient hospice care due to her husband’s burnout was denied, after which her husband asked for a second assessor to weigh in, the Daily Mail reports.
After the second assessor judged her to be eligible for MAiD, the original assessor objected – expressing concerns over the alleged “urgency” of the request, and expressing the need for further evaluation. A request to meet with Mrs. B the next day was declined by the MAiD provider, as “the clinical circumstances necessitated an urgent provision.”
Then, a third MAiD assessor agreed with the second one, and Mrs. B was euthanized that evening.
According to the Coroner’s report, several members of a Review Committee “believed the short timeline did not allow all aspects of Mrs B’s social and end-of-life circumstances and care needs to be explored,” which included “the impact of being denied hospice care, additional care options, caregiver burden, consistency of the MAiD request, and divergent MAiD practitioner perspectives.”
“Many members brought forward concerns of possible external coercion arising from the caregiver’s experience of burnout and lack of access to palliative care in an in-patient or hospice setting,” the report notes.
Others raised concerns over the fact that Mrs. B’s spouse was the primary person advocating and advocating access to MAiD, and there was scant documentation that she actually asked for it herself.
Dr. Ramona Coelho, a family physician who’s on the committee, wrote a scathing review that was deeply critical of Mrs. B’s case, arguing that the focus should have been “on ensuring adequate palliative care and support for Mrs B and her spouse.”
“Hospice and palliative care teams should have been urgently re-engaged, given the severity of the situation.
“Additionally, the MAiD provider expedited the process despite the first assessor’s and Mrs B’s concerns without fully considering the impact of her spouse’s burnout,” her letter continues.
According to some, Canada has an assisted dying crisis. As the Epoch Times notes;
Canada’s current approach to assisted suicide, especially in cases involving mental illness, represents such a threshold. Recent federal data indicate that more than 16,000 assisted suicide cases are approved annually in Canada, with an increasing proportion involving individuals with mental health challenges. This trend highlights the urgent need for policy reassessment and underscores the critical importance of addressing this issue.

Teen charged in connection to stabbing death of pregnant Downers Grove woman
A teenager has been accused of first-degree murder after a pregnant woman was found stabbed to death in an apartment fire in west suburban Downers Grove Monday night, local authorities said.
Downers Grove police and fire responded to reports of a structure fire in a local apartment building just after 6 p.m., according to village officials. Fire crews removed a 30-year-old pregnant woman from the building, who had suffered “apparent sharp force trauma,” officials said. The woman, identified as Eliza Morales of Downers Grove, was treated by paramedics but ultimately pronounced dead on scene.
A second person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, officials said.
On Tuesday, the village stated Nedas Revuckas, 19, of Westmont, had been arrested in connection to the stabbing death. Revuckas was charged with first-degree murder, intentional homicide of an unborn child, armed robbery, aggravated arson and aggravated cruelty to an animal.
Officials released no further details on the matter.
Revuckas will be transported to DuPage County Jail and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Wednesday.

Morez Johnson Jr. had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines (19-1, 9-1 Big Ten), who trailed for 36-plus minutes before holding Nebraska scoreless over the final 3:15.
Jamarques Lawrence missed a 3-pointer with 4 seconds remaining for the short-handed Cornhuskers (20-1, 9-1), and Sam Hoiberg missed a jumper just before the buzzer.
Nebraska had won 24 straight games dating to last season, including four victories in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament at Las Vegas last April. That was the longest winning streak in Division I since the 2014-15 Kentucky team went 38-0 before losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four.
The previous defeat for the Cornhuskers came in their regular-season finale last year, 83-68 to Iowa at home on March 9.

A New York-based Chinese dissident and political commentator has filed a lawsuit against X Corp., alleging the social media platform wrongfully suspended his account without explanation and may have acted under foreign political pressure.
Wilson Lei Chen, a U.S. citizen who is also known as Chen Pokong on his podcast, filed the suit in the New York State Supreme Court in December. On Jan. 5, the case was moved to federal court and is now pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, according to Chen’s Jan. 12 press statement, which The Epoch Times viewed on Jan. 26.
According to Chen’s complaint, X permanently suspended the political commentator’s account on Feb. 15, 2023, without prior notice or a detailed explanation. Chen alleges that despite filing multiple appeals, he received only automated responses citing unspecified violations of platform rules.
Before the suspension, Chen’s account, active since 2010, had approximately 150,000 followers.
He used the platform to comment on Chinese politics, promote democratic values, and direct followers to his YouTube channel, which has more than 450,000 subscribers, the complaint states.
Chen claimed that X did not adhere to its own terms of service, which, according to him, mandate notice, an explanation, and a fair review process prior to any permanent enforcement action. The lawsuit alleges breach of contract, deceptive business practices under New York law, and tortious interference with business relations.
The complaint also raises broader concerns about possible foreign political influence. Chen, a longtime critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), said that his suspension may have resulted from coordinated reporting campaigns or political pressure aimed at silencing overseas dissidents.
The filing cites U.S. officials and media reports documenting CCP-linked online influence and harassment campaigns targeting the regime’s critics outside of China.
Chen said the suspension from X caused significant professional and financial harm, including lost audience engagement, reduced income, and damage to his reputation, according to his press statement. He is seeking reinstatement of his account, transparency of X’s moderation decision, and compensatory and punitive damages exceeding $2 million.
X Corp. has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
The company did not respond to The Epoch Times’ request for comment by publication time.
Chen said the case raises broader public-interest concerns about potential external or foreign pressures that may affect how online platforms handle content moderation involving political speech, criticism of foreign governments, and transnational repression. Accordingly, he intends to pursue the matter through the courts.

LA HABANA (AP) — El presidente cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel encabezó el martes por la noche una multitudinaria marcha juvenil que cada año conmemora el natalicio del héroe patrio José Martí.
Este año la manifestación coincide con una tensa situación nacional y regional, pues la isla afronta una fuerte crisis económica al tiempo que enfrenta las amenazas de Estados Unidos y su presidente Donald Trump, quien busca asfixiar a la nación caribeña.
Díaz-Canel llegó a la escalinata de la Universidad de La Habana adonde se encendieron miles de antorchas caseras confeccionadas por jóvenes de la educación media y superior. Posteriormente, marchó por varias cuadras.
“Este no es un acto de nostalgia, es un llamado a la acción”, dijo Litza Elena González Desdín, presiente de la Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios (FEU), la organización juvenil cercana al gobierno y que tuvo a su cargo las palabras centrales y la organización de la marcha.
González hizo hincapié sobre la retórica hostil de Trump contra Cuba que se incrementó tras un operativo que capturó en Venezuela al entonces presidente Nicolás Maduro, un férreo aliado político y comercial de la isla.
Trump exigió a la isla cumplir con sus exigencias de un cambio de modelo político antes de que sea demasiado “tarde”. Incluso, el martes aseguró que la isla estaba cerca del colapso.
“Levanto mi voz para decir que no aceptamos cadenas nuevas ni viejas. Que nuestra generación, como aquella que hace 73 años… no se rinde ni se vende”, expresó González.

MINNEAPOLIS — A man sprayed an unknown substance on Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar and was tackled to the ground Tuesday during a town hall she was hosting in Minneapolis, where tensions over federal immigration enforcement have come to a head after agents fatally shot an intensive care nurse and a mother of three this month.
The audience cheered as the man, who was wearing a black jacket and holding a syringe, was pinned down and his arms were tied behind his back. In video of the incident, someone in the crowd can be heard saying, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.”
Just before that Omar had called for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign.
“ICE cannot be reformed,” she said.
Minneapolis police said officers saw a man use a syringe to spray an unknown liquid at Omar. They immediately arrested him and booked him at the county jail for third-degree assault, spokesperson Trevor Folke said in an email.
Omar continued the town hall after the man was ushered out of the room by her security detail, saying she would not be intimidated. Journalists said there was a strong, vinegar-like smell when the man pushed on the syringe.
Walking out afterward, Omar said she felt a little flustered but was not hurt. She was going to be screened by a medical team.
She later posted on the social platform X: “I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don’t let bullies win. Grateful to my incredible constituents who rallied behind me. Minnesota strong.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Tuesday night.
President Donald Trump has frequently criticized the congresswoman and has stepped up verbal attacks on her in recent months as he turned his focus on Minneapolis.
During a Cabinet meeting in December, he called her “garbage” and added that “her friends are garbage.”
Hours earlier on Tuesday, the president criticized Omar as he spoke to a crowd in Iowa, saying his administration would only let in immigrants who “can show that they love our country.”
“They have to be proud, not like Ilhan Omar,” he said, drawing loud boos at the mention of her name.
He added: “She comes from a country that’s a disaster. So probably, it’s considered, I think — it’s not even a country.”
Fellow U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, denounced the assault on Omar.
“I am deeply disturbed to learn that Rep. Ilhan Omar was attacked at a town hall today” Mace said via X. “Regardless of how vehemently I disagree with her rhetoric — and I do — no elected official should face physical attacks. This is not who we are.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, also condemned the attack on X, saying: “Unacceptable. Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis. We can disagree without putting people at risk.”
He added that he was relieved that Omar “is OK” and thanked police for their quick response, concluding: “This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our city.”
The attack came days after a man was arrested in Utah for allegedly punching U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, a Democrat from Florida, in the face during the Sundance Film Festival and saying Trump was going to deport him.
Threats against members of Congress have increased in recent years, peaking in 2021 and the aftermath of that year’s Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, before dipping slightly only to climb again, according to the most recent figures from the U.S. Capitol Police.
Lawmakers have discussed the chill the threats bring on their ability to hold town halls and public events, with some even citing the threat environment in their decisions not to seek reelection.
Omar has faced the most particular concern, long targeted with harsh language and personal attacks by Trump and other Republicans.

Veterans, unions and health care workers remember Alex Pretti as ‘hero’ at vigil
Dozens of union members and leaders, health care workers and veterans convened outside the Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago Tuesday afternoon for a vigil to protest the death of Alex Pretti and commemorate his life.
Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was shot several times and killed by a federal immigration agent Saturday during an ongoing large-scale immigration crackdown in Minnesota. Pretti was the second U.S. citizen killed by agents in Minneapolis. Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent earlier this month.
In the days following Pretti’s death, protests and vigils have erupted across the country. A protest in the Loop Sunday drew elected officials and thousands of people in frigid weather. Another vigil commemorating Pretti, organized by National Nurses United, is scheduled for Wednesday evening outside the VA Medical Center.
The Chicago Federation of Labor organized Tuesday’s vigil. Union members and leaders from National Nurses United, SEIU Healthcare, the Chicago Teachers Union, UIC Resident Union and the American Federation of Government Employees Local 789 were in attendance, as well as faith leaders and veterans.
“We are mindful that we were gifted with Alex Pretti, a proud nurse and hero of his community who did the important work, the courageous work, the inspirational work of serving humanity in medicine,” the Rev. Brendan Curran, a Catholic priest and vocal supporter of immigrant rights, said in prayer.
Speeches from union members and leaders, health care professionals and veterans followed the prayer. The speakers condemned Pretti’s killing above the noise of cars honking in support.
“What makes this loss even more devastating is how Alex spent his final moments,” Chicago Teachers Union member Vicki Kurzydlo said to the crowd. “Witnesses tell us that as chaos unfolded, Alex’s instinct was not out of fear or self-preservation.”
Pretti can be seen on video, presumably trying to help a woman after a federal immigration agent pushed her to the ground. Federal agents then pinned Pretti down and removed a handgun that was on his person before shooting him, according to video analysis from The Associated Press.
The federal government claimed Pretti attempted to use violence against the officers, but video footage shows him carrying a cellphone, not a weapon, before immigration agents forced him to the ground. He had a concealed carry license, according to AP.
Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino is expected to leave Minneapolis as the Trump administration reshuffles leadership of Operation Metro Surge after the national pushback over Pretti’s killing.
“As veterans, we know what warfare looks like,” said Daniel Lakemacher, a Navy veteran and member of About Face: Veterans Against the War. “And right now, the United States is engaged in warfare against (its) own people.”
The speakers said that anyone could have been in Pretti’s shoes and met the same fate, with some adding that they see themselves in Pretti, who was born in Park Ridge.
Anne Igoe, a union leader for SEIU Healthcare, said the values of care and compassion that health care workers, such as Pretti, live by are under attack by the Trump administration.
“We don’t come to a protest to protest,” Igoe said. “We come to a protest because we care about those (who) are being harmed around us. That is why all of us are here today.”

After the speeches, attendees left white roses at a growing memorial for Pretti up against a fence on the VA medical center property. The memorial includes signs, a picture of Pretti, flowers and candles. The protesters then marched around the building, while carrying signs and chanting anti-ICE slogans.
Nicole Cantello, president of the Chicago chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, said she understands Pretti’s service through his work as a fellow union member.
“We’re here because we really care about other federal employees who are out there protecting other people, who are serving veterans and serving the American people,” Cantello said.

According to financial disclosures filed last year, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s net worth has surged in recent years. Omar reported that her husband held stakes valued between $6 million and $30 million in a venture capital firm and a winery. That sudden and dramatic increase in wealth has now drawn scrutiny. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) plans to open an investigation into how such a meteoric rise occurred so quickly, and she is also under criminal investigation by the Department of Justice.
The existence of the federal probe became public after President Donald Trump mentioned it in a Truth Social post on Monday. Trump wrote, “the DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Illhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars. Time will tell all.”
Omar dismissed Trump’s announcement in a post on X.
“Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking,” she wrote. “Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me. Years of ‘investigations’ have found nothing. Get your goons out of Minnesota.”
Others are accusing Trump of weaponizing the Justice Department against his political enemies.
“The Justice Department’s ‘investigation’ of Representative Omar, a longtime critic of President Trump, looks suspiciously like a continuation of Trump’s revenge campaign against Minnesota’s elected officials and anyone else who disagrees with him,” claimed Christina Harvey, executive director of Stand Up America.
However, Omar’s shady personal finances even caught the attention of the Biden Justice Department back in 2024.
According to a New York Times report, federal prosecutors launched an investigation into Omar that scrutinized her personal finances, campaign spending, and contacts with a foreign national.
The investigation began in June 2024, with federal prosecutors working alongside the Justice Department’s public integrity unit. Investigators examined Omar’s financial disclosures, campaign records, and other relevant documents. The inquiry reportedly slowed after agents said they found no evidence that required further action. There are fresh doubts about that explanation, as Omar’s disclosures show a sudden rise in high-value assets connected to her husband’s business ventures, raising new questions about their legitimacy. Most of the reported wealth comes from two sources: a winery in Santa Rosa, California, and a venture capital firm in Washington, D.C.
The winery, listed as eStCru LLC, jumped in reported value from $15,000–$50,000 in 2023 to $1 million-$5 million the following year. Rose Lake Capital showed an even more dramatic spike. The firm went from having just $42.44 in its account in late 2022 to a reported value of up to $25 million by 2024, according to Omar’s financial disclosure.
Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, co-founded Rose Lake Capital in 2022 with Will Hailer as part of a network of companies he controls. The sharp increase in money and lack of a public track record raised suspicions among associates, who alerted federal investigators.
This is not the first time Omar’s shady finances have come under scrutiny.
Omar has previously faced multiple allegations related to her finances and campaign funds. A 2019 investigation by the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board examined complaints that she used nearly $6,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses, including payments to her divorce attorney and travel, and was ordered to reimburse her campaign. That same year, Minnesota campaign finance officials found that Omar filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 with Ahmed Hirsi while she was still legally married to another man.
House Oversight Chair James Comer told the New York Post he plans to launch an investigation into what caused the dramatic spike in Omar’s net worth.
“We’re going to get answers, whether it’s through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,” Comer said.
“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer added. “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”
A law enforcement source also confirmed the criminal investigation.
“We are investigating all politicians potentially connected to any of this [fraud] in Minnesota. You can read between the lines,” the source said.
