David McGrath: When it’s true love, you embrace the person flaws and all

Just as William Shakespeare was not afraid to admit to the world that his mistress’s eyes were “nothing like the sun,” I shall likewise publicly admit this Valentine’s Day that my true love snores like a lumberjack.

And lest anyone think this would anger my comely wife, Marianne, I am confident my darling will understand once I explain (right, hon?).

The Bard wrote 154 sonnets, the majority of them featuring the kind of romantic sentiment we celebrate on Valentine’s Day. But Sonnet 130 may very well be the most popular for its testament to genuine love as opposed to superficial infatuation.

Following the opening verse with the characterization of his lady’s eyes,  Shakespeare proceeded to give a rundown of her other features in less than flattering terms, including her lips (pale), hair (wiry), voice (grating) and breath (reeking).

Imagine how irate his mistress must have been reading the first 12 lines of his 14-line poem! But he presumably defused her anger at the end when he swore that his love was more precious than all the women idealized by other poets with exaggeration and falsehood.

Truth be told, Marianne has her own set of peccadillos. Her snoring, I must concede, is not exactly her fault. All five of her sisters, equally lovely, have had the same loud and genetic tendency. I also have it on good authority that stars such as Rihanna, Ashley Tisdale and Kaley Cucco (www.nairaland.com/2331288/20-celebrities-drive-partners-crazy) have been known to saw wood as well. So, she finds herself in good company.

Next, though my true love is fundamentally a good cook, her meals often have a glaring deficiency. I don’t mean the occasional hair found in the eggs Benedict or chicken cacciatore; that can happen with any chef. Instead, I refer to her fear of anything hot or spicy.

For weeks, I swore I must have had COVID-19, convinced that my taste buds were out of commission. But when I tested negative, a search of the pantry turned up the real reason: a complete set of Mrs. Dash salt-free variety seasoning! It wasn’t COVID but those seven different shaker jars that left everything tasting like tofu.

What may be more troubling, I am reluctant to say, is that my love is not a dog person. How she is able to resist petting every tail wagger she encounters on her morning walk is befuddling to me and her daughters. Regarding our own pooches over the years, Biff, Casey and Frank, she would never kiss or cuddle them (OK, maybe one time with Frank when he was a puppy — see photo) or allow them to lick her knees.

Finally, it pains me to admit that my love’s taste in music leaves much to be desired. On long drives, she likes the Supremes, Billy Joel, Anne Murray, Dan Fogelberg and the kind of tunes that trigger in me the same impulse John Belushi had in “Animal House,” when he busted up that troubadour’s guitar. And, yes, she’ll let me play my Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Nas in our car, but she asks that I choke the volume so far down that my Bose speakers beg for mercy.

Her film preference leans at a similar angle: she steers clear of “The Godfather,” “The Deer Hunter” or “Unforgiven” in favor of “Momma Mia!,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Homecoming” — anything with a happy ending. Our DVR’s memory is so full of Hallmark movies that there’s little room left for my hunting and fishing shows.

Far be it for me, however, to dare emulate Shakespeare’s dramatic turn at the end with rhyming verses of iambic pentameter.

Instead, I’ll conclude with a quick story about driving Marianne to the hospital last month when she was afflicted with kidney stones.

The nurse came to get me in the waiting room and said the treatment was a success and that Marianne was coming out of anesthesia in the recovery room.

Anyone who has had kidney stones will tell you there is no greater pain and agony. So, what was the first thing she said to me? “Did you ever get breakfast? You must be starving.”

The single moment captures her character better than any list of adjectives or rhyming words could ever do. And that’s why there is no love more exceptional than my Valentine.

Valparaiso council rejects anti-ICE resolution 6-1 at lengthy Monday meeting

For different reasons from all quarters, a resolution denouncing Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis failed to pass at the Valparaiso City Council meeting Monday night after hours of comment and debate from the overflow audience.

Council Member Robert Cotton, D-2nd, submitted the resolution for a vote in response to requests made by the group Valpo Resistance at the Jan. 26 city council meeting that the mayor and council formulate and publicize a policy for dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In the end, Cotton was the only council member to vote for the resolution.

Before the meeting, a group of about 75 Valpo Resistance members took their support of the proposed resolution on parade. They met at the southwest corner of Lincolnway and Franklin Street and walked the few blocks to City Hall. Timothy Leitzke, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, pronounced the names of those who have died since Jan. 1, 2025, in DHS custody or at their hands over a megaphone and the marchers refrained, “Remember them,” to each.

Upon their arrival at the west steps of City Hall, they were met by a handful of opponents dressed in Trump and ICE hats and attire. After some jockeying to put signs in each other’s faces and outshout each other, both groups moved inside without incident.

The business of the resolution was first on the agenda and the one-page proposed resolution was read aloud. “A resolution of the City Council of the City of Valparaiso, expressing deep grief and outrage at the recent deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, both U.S. citizens who were fatally shot during federal immigration law enforcement actions in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last month,” the opening paragraph read. Six further points were also made.

Those who wished to comment publicly were allowed the floor first, with preference given to Valparaiso residents. Many people spoke, with a fairly even divide of support and opposition.

Sandra Nicksic, of Valparaiso, said the citizens of Valparaiso are apparently “pretty level-headed” and won’t interfere in ICE operations. She also said that people are judged by the company they keep and if folks “are hanging with the worst of the worst, they deserve to go. If you don’t put yourself out there and cause a problem and antagonize them (ICE), then you don’t have a problem.”

Alicia McGill, also of Valparaiso, said a resolution would be an honorable thing from a city that has banners of Martin Luther King Jr. on display. While she acknowledged there is certainly illegal immigration happening, she said, “The way you go about changing that isn’t like this.” She said police officers in America don’t wear masks. They wear badges with their badge numbers or even their names visible. They wear body cameras.

Marci Stearns, of Valparaiso, said members of her family were career law enforcement officers, including on the federal level. “I find this resolution offensive,” she said. “You do not speak for me and I know plenty of residents within the city you do not speak for.”

Bryant Mitol, of Valparaiso, responded to comments made by several supporting ICE raids that they said were rounding up violent criminals by quoting from a study by the libertarian think tank The Cato Institute that he said found just 4% to 7% of illegal immigrants are violent criminals.

Council President Ellen Kapitan, D-At-Large, said she and Council Member Emilie Hunt, D-At-Large, spent a considerable portion of the weekend drafting amendments they found the resolution to be lacking. “Speaking so broadly, but not about our local constituents, is a miss,” she said. “I think this deserves more time.”

Hunt explained that she was born and raised in Minnesota and lived for several years just two blocks from where Good was killed. She said the resolution falls short of what was requested by constituents. She said Cotton chose to file the resolution without conferring with anyone but Council Member Barbara Domer, D-3rd.

At the beginning of the meeting, Domer had said she would support the resolution if the language in the fourth paragraph was changed to reflect just one federal immigration enforcement operation. “I was told there was one operation,” she said of inquiries she made. The draft read “Whereas, Federal immigration law enforcement has already conducted regular operations in the City of Valparaiso.”

Council Member Diana Reed, D-1st, said she didn’t feel the resolution was the appropriate role of the council, which should focus on governing locally and announced she was also in favor of tabling it.

Councilman Peter Anderson, R-5th, read a lengthy prepared statement. He said while Cotton did reach out to him, it wasn’t until after the resolution was made public. He said he was opposed to tabling the resolution since only two members of the council worked on it.

He also commented on personal attacks he’s received via social media and aggressive remarks he’s seen directed at Kapitan. “We are not enemies,” he said. “We are neighbors. We live in the same city. We shop at the same stores. Our kids go to the same schools.”

Councilman Jack Pupillo, R-4th, read a statement he made at a council meeting in 2024 calling for the council to avoid social and cultural issues. “And here we are. How interesting,” he said.

Cotton defended the way he went about putting forth the resolution. “I embarked on trying to get this issue answered to the extent we are able,” he said. “I knew, because of the deadline, we’d have to put this thing on the agenda before noon on Wednesday.”

After consulting with new City Attorney Joseph Svetanoff, the council decided to vote on the resolution put forth by Cotton, not the call to table it for further discussion put forth by Hunt.

‘Off The Charts’: Retail Is Buying-The-Dip In Software Stocks Like Never Before

‘Off The Charts’: Retail Is Buying-The-Dip In Software Stocks Like Never Before

Starting on Friday, we have seen a sudden reversal from panic-selling to panic-buying in tech stocks, which has lifted Nasdaq back above its 100DMA…

The headline-grabbing culprit for much of the pain to the downside was Software stocks (IGV as an example of an ETF that tracks the sector), which collapsed as specifically SaaS firms faced ‘existential threats’ from AI disruption.

That crashed Software valuations down dramatically…

And, suddenly – starting Friday morning – buyers appeared to snap up these newly cheap stocks…

Inflows into IGV – the Software ETF – have soared…

But, the question has been – who’s buying?

Well now we have the answer, thanks to Vanda Research:

1M rolling net retail inflows into the iShares Software ETF (IGV) surged to a record $176mn as of close yesterday, more than double the prior peak seen during the late-2024 software drawdown.

This is one of the more aggressive episodes of retail dip-buying in tech, and especially software, that we’ve observed in our dataset.

Vanda also notes that Amazon ranked as the most bought US stock by retail investors, displacing Nvidia in the last few sessions.

Last Friday, AMZN recorded its largest single-day of net retail buying since Aug 2024.

We also saw decent follow-through buying throughout the session yesterday.

This is in keeping with the theme that retail investors have been opportunistically buying the dip in mega-cap tech after any earnings-driven sell-offs (also seen in MSFT, GOOGL etc.).

The question is – can retail maintain this momentum long enough to get hedgies re-engaged in Software from their near-record low exposure levels

“He tenido una gran carrera.

Marshall Ledbetter follows brother’s footsteps but in a different way for Hinckley-Big Rock. ‘Take advantage.’

Who will be able to pick up the slack?

That was Hinckley-Big Rock’s biggest question heading into this season with the graduation of the program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder in 6-foot-5 forward Martin Ledbetter and 6-5 guard Max Hintzsche, his No. 1 scoring sidekick.

Marshall Ledbetter, now a 6-1 junior forward and Martin’s brother, wasn’t sure he had the answer.

“I just thought we’d come back a little slower, a little weaker and just not as good because they were our leading scorers,” said Marshall, who played on the junior varsity last winter and dressed for varsity games but didn’t see much action.

“I feel like we’ve all become scorers now and everyone is doing their part to score the ball. Everyone seems to take turns and has their night and steps up.”

Maybe so, but Marshall Ledbetter and 6-foot senior foward Luke Badal have been the most consistent, averaging just over 20 points and in the mid-teens, respectively.

They were rocks again Monday night for the Royals, each putting up 20 points and six rebounds in a 65-55 nonconference victory at Aurora Central Catholic.

Senior forward Jacob Orin and senior guard Judah Miceli added eight points apiece for Hinckley-Big Rock (18-7), which isn’t far off the pace set by last season’s team that dropped a 57-54 decision to Aurora Christian in the sectional final and finished 26-9.

“I thought we came out and started really well,” said Royals coach Seth Sanderson, whose team led by as much as 10 points in the first half before ACC cut it to 37-35 in the third quarter and then 43-41 early in the fourth.

A 15-3 run by Hinckley-Big Rock over the next 3:30 secured the win.

“They’re a really hard team,” Sanderson said of the Chargers. “They play in probably the toughest conference in the state, so it’s a young team in a tough conference.

“I think their record is a little deceiving and doesn’t reflect how competitive they are.”

Junior forward Nick Czerak led ACC (11-17) with 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Myles Manuel added 12 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Braden Dillon had 10 points and seven rebounds.

“They started to get a lot of offensive rebounds in that stretch,” Ledbetter said. “We got a timeout to talk it over and needed to get more rebounds. We have a lot of hustle on our team, too.”

Limiting ACC to one-shot possessions helped the Royals’ transition game.

“We’re definitely more of an inside out team and that was our big focus coming in,” Sanderson said. “That and trying to keep them off the 3-point line.”

Badal also has been doing a nice job of attacking the basket. He came on strong last season, moving into the starting lineup at Christmas.

“The last 10 games or so he was our third leading scorer,” Sanderson said. “He does a pretty good job with his footwork and feel. He keeps people off balance and has a nice spin move and will draw fouls. He’s gotten to the line a ton of times this season.”

Martin Ledbetter is currently a freshman baseball player at Wabash Valley, where he pitches and plays first base.

“He has about four inches and 80 pounds on me,” Marshall said. “They just got back from playing in Texas. Martin’s down to 235 pounds after being up to 250 playing basketball last year.”

Martin tops Hinckley-Big Rock’s basketball career lists with 2,145 points and 1,409 rebounds. Last season, he averaged 21.4 points and Hintzsche followed at 17.5.

Marshall Ledbetter plays outfield and pitches some in the spring as well as throwing the discus in track. He weighs between 180 and 185 and confirmed that basketball is his favorite sport.

“Martin was such a good athlete — I’ll never take anything from him,” Sanderson said. “But I think in some ways, Marshall is a little quicker side to side.”

“That’s what I try to take advantage of with a slower opponent,” Marshall said. “Just beat them laterally and vertically.”

Bronze medalist in Olympic biathlon confesses to cheating on his girlfriend in a postrace interview

ANTERSELVA, Italy — A postrace interview with the bronze medal winner in the men’s Olympic biathlon competition Tuesday took an unexpected turn when he revealed in a live broadcast that he had been unfaithful to his girlfriend.

Sturla Holm Laegreid, one of Norway’s top biathletes, finished third in the 20-kilometer individual race but was full of remorse when he spoke to Norwegian broadcaster NRK at the Milan Cortina Games.

“Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful, sweetest person. And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her,” Laegreid said, fighting back tears.

He said he told his partner a week ago about what had happened.

“I’m sure many people now see me in a different light, but I only have eyes for her,” he said. “I’m not quite sure what I’m trying to say by saying this now, but sport has taken a back seat in recent days. I wish I could share this with her.”

Laegreid’s teammate Johan-Olav Botn shot perfectly in his Olympic debut to secure the gold medal, while Eric Perrot of France, the overall World Cup leader, missed one shot and finished 14.8 seconds behind Botn to take silver. Laegreid also missed one target and was 48.3 seconds behind, taking the bronze.

It was Laegreid’s first individual Olympic medal. He was part of the relay team that took gold at the Beijing Olympics.

But instead of celebrating, he was distraught, crying and hugging friends after the race. During a news conference he explained why he decided to tell the world about his personal situation on the TV broadcast.

“It was the choice I made. We make different choices during our life and that’s how we make life,” he told a room full of journalists. “So today I made a choice to tell the world what I did, so maybe, maybe there is a chance she will see what she really means to me. Maybe not.”

He said he felt bad about upstaging his teammate with his deeply personal news.

“Now I hope I didn’t ruin Johan’s day,” he said. “Maybe it was really selfish of me to give that interview. I’m not really here, mentally.”

DHS Shutdown Talks Stall As Democrats Reject GOP Offer, Thune Signals Stopgap May Be Needed

DHS Shutdown Talks Stall As Democrats Reject GOP Offer, Thune Signals Stopgap May Be Needed

With Republicans demanding election integrity, and Democrats demanding ICE reform, it looks like the Department of Homeland Security may shut down again on Friday after Democratic leaders rejected a White House-backed GOP counterproposal to keep the lights on – which may require a short-term stopgap if they can’t agree on something by Friday.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said the GOP proposal is “woefully inadequate” and shows the White House “is clearly not open to” several Democratic priorities aimed at tightening oversight of immigration enforcement.

Jeffries said the offer failed to address requirements for judicial warrants, detention center standards, independent investigations and excessive-force rules. Asked whether the administration would support a ban on federal agents wearing masks, Jeffries said, “That’s an open question.”

“They don’t appear to be open to … ensuring that ICE agents are identifiable in a manner consistent with every other law enforcement agency in the country,” Jeffries said, according to Politico

According to the Department of Homeland Security, a government shutdown would make the country less secure, affecting TSA, FEMA, ICE, and Border Patrol operations. Acting ICE Director Lyons said that task forces targeting terrorism and transnational crime would be hit hardest.

According to Polymarketthere’s currently a 74% chance of a shutdown by Saturday

Jeffries’ comments followed a late Monday joint statement with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), in which the two Democrats criticized the GOP response as lacking both legislative text and meaningful detail.

“The initial GOP response is both incomplete and insufficient in terms of addressing the concerns Americans have about ICE’s lawless conduct,” the leaders said. “Democrats await additional detail and text.”

Punchbowl News asked Jeffries about whether he things Republicans are serious about cutting a deal, to which he replied:

“It’s clear to me that House, Senate Republicans and the White House, they’re all on the run. These people are falling apart. They’re losing election after election. They’ve lost the public. Donald Trump is at historically low approval ratings … And so our view is dramatic reform is necessary with respect to DHS before a funding bill moves forward.”

Thune keeps CR on the table – conditionally

Republicans, meanwhile, are trying to keep negotiations alive while acknowledging the clock is running out. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Tuesday that negotiations aren’t dead, but GOP leadership is contemplating next steps if talks don’t advance quickly.

There are things I think on probably both sides that are non-negotiables,” Thune said. “But I do think there are a number of things in the range of common ground.”

Thune said Republicans may begin laying procedural groundwork for a short-term stopgap known as a continuing resolution (CR) – framing it as a fallback option, not a foregone conclusion – if negotiations fail to produce an agreement in time. Any shutdown-averting measure would require support from at least seven Senate Democrats, he added.

The existing funding patch for DHS expires Friday. Without action, the department, which employs more than 260,000 people, would face a partial shutdown.

On the Senate floor, Schumer struck a more measured tone than Jeffries, saying Democrats “need to see more from Republicans very soon.”

“What Democrats propose is the definition of common sense,” Schumer said. “We simply want ICE to follow the same standards that most law enforcement agencies across America already follow.”

Key demands, limited overlap

While the GOP counteroffer has not been publicly detailed. But White House allies have indicated that at least one Democratic demand – requiring federal law enforcement officers to obtain judicial warrants before entering private property – is not under consideration.

Other proposals, including mask prohibitions, ID display requirements and restrictions on where ICE agents can operate, would require significant Democratic concessions to gain administration support, according to people close to the White House.

Still, the exchange of offers has given GOP leaders cautious optimism that talks could continue – particularly as senators hope to leave Washington by Thursday for the Munich Security Conference and other overseas delegations.

It depends on whether we’re making progress or not,” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said Monday. “We’ve got some time. Hopefully people will be working to try and get something done.”

The length of any short-term funding patch, if needed, remains unresolved. GOP appropriators have pushed for at least a two-week extension, though Thune said the duration “will have to be negotiated.”
