Operativo de ICE en Newark causó choque múltiple con heridos, dice alcalde
NEWARK, Nueva Jersey, EE.UU. (AP) — Una persecución automovilística en la que participaron agentes federales de inmigración derivó en un choque de varios vehículos el miércoles en Newark, Nueva Jersey, informaron funcionarios de la ciudad.

California and 14 other states on Feb. 24 sued federal health agencies and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over the recently revised childhood vaccine schedule.
Federal officials violated federal law by not consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine advisory panel before downgrading recommendations for six vaccines in January, the plaintiffs said in a lawsuit filed in federal court in northern California.
The updated CDC vaccine schedule “will damage public health by decreasing vaccine uptake and increasing rates of vaccine-preventable diseases, including by creating confusion, spreading misinformation contrary to established scientific evidence, and increasing vaccine hesitancy,” they said.
They also took issue with how the CDC, acting on advice from the panel, previously stopped recommending hepatitis B vaccination at birth to children born to women who tested negative for hepatitis B.
The states are asking the court to enjoin those changes.
The Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC’s parent agency, has said it does not comment on litigation.
A separate lawsuit, lodged in 2025 by health organizations, also seeks to block the revised schedule as well as Kennedy’s remaking of the CDC’s vaccine advisory committee.
U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy, who heard from the parties during a hearing in Boston earlier in February, has not yet ruled on the request as he considers whether to allow Children’s Health Defense, an organization previously founded by Kennedy, to intervene in the case in support of the government.
Government lawyers have said in filings in that case that the vaccine schedule was reasonably updated based on recommendations from top health officials, including Dr. Tracy Beth Hoeg, acting director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

President Donald Trump ordered a comparison of the U.S. vaccine schedule with those of other countries, and it showed the United States was a global outlier among peer nations in routinely recommending vaccines against hepatitis A and certain other diseases, Hoeg said.
A memorandum signed by then-CDC Acting Director Jim O’Neill said the update was needed to increase public trust in vaccines.
The government has also said Kennedy’s replacement of vaccine advisory committee members was legal because members hold a variety of jobs and have put forth “complex and nuanced perspectives.”
The attorneys general of 14 states—Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin—all Democrats, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, also a Democrat, are the plaintiffs in the new suit.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta told reporters in an online briefing on Tuesday that the actions Kennedy and other officials have taken regarding the vaccine “harm public health and they strain state resources by sowing doubt and confusion in vaccines and in science.”
He added later that, absent action from the court, “California will be forced to expend resources, to treat once rare diseases, to respond to outbreaks, and to combat misinformation.”

Iran accuses President Trump of ‘big lies’ ahead of Geneva talks and in face of major US military deployment
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran pushed back Wednesday against U.S. President Donald Trump’s pressure tactics ahead of critical talks in Geneva over Tehran’s nuclear program, alternating between calling his remarks “big lies” and saying negotiations may yield an agreement through “honorable diplomacy.”
The remarks by two Iranian officials came a day before the talks and as America has assembled its biggest deployment of aircraft and warships to the Middle East in decades. The buildup is part of Trump’s efforts to get a deal to constrain Iran’s nuclear program while the country struggles at home with growing dissent following nationwide protests last month.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran if negotiations fail. Mideast nations fear an attack could spiral into a new regional war as the embers of the yearslong Israel-Hamas war still smolder. Already, Iran has said all U.S. military bases in the Mideast would be considered legitimate targets, putting at risk tens of thousands of American service members.
Satellite photos shot Tuesday by Planet Labs PBC and analyzed by The Associated Press appeared to show the American vessels that typically are docked in Bahrain, the home of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, all out at sea. The 5th Fleet referred questions to the U.S. military’s Central Command, which declined to comment. Before Iran’s attack on Qatar in June, the 5th Fleet similarly scattered its ships at sea to protect against a potential attack.
Iran responds to State of the Union speech
Trump touched on Iran and the nuclear negotiations in his State of the Union speechlate Tuesday in Washington.
“They’ve already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas, and they’re working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America,” Trump said. “They were warned to make no future attempts to rebuild their weapons program, and in particular nuclear weapons, yet they continue. They’re starting it all over.”
Satellite photos analyzed earlier by the AP showed Iran beginning to rebuild its missile-production sites and doing some work at the three nuclear sites attacked by the U.S. in June. Iran has long maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Wednesday that Iran is “always trying to rebuild elements” of its nuclear program. He said that Tehran is not enriching uranium right now, “but they’re trying to get to the point where they ultimately can.”
The West and the International Atomic Energy Agency say Iran had a nuclear weapons program until 2003. Before the June attack, it had been enriching uranium up to 60% purity — a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.
Responding to Trump, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei sought to compare him to Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister. He accused Trump and his administration of conducting a “disinformation & misinformation campaign” against Iran.
“Whatever they’re alleging in regards to Iran’s nuclear program, Iran’s ballistic missiles, and the number of casualties during January’s unrest is simply the repetition of ‘big lies,’” Baghaei wrote on X.
Trump said in his speech that at least 32,000 people were killed in last month’s protests, which is at the far end of estimates offered by activists for the death toll. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activist News Agency has so far counted more than 7,000 dead and believes the actual figure is far higher. Iran’s government, which long has downplayed death tolls in other unrest, offered its only toll on Jan. 21, saying 3,117 people were killed.
Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, said separately that the U.S. could either try diplomacy or face Iran’s wrath.
“If you choose the table of diplomacy — a diplomacy in which the dignity of the Iranian nation and mutual interests are respected — we will also be at that table,” Qalibaf said, according to the semiofficial Student News Network, a media outlet believed to be close to the all-volunteer Basij force of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
“But if you decide to repeat past experiences through deception, lies, flawed analysis and false information, and launch an attack in the midst of negotiations, you will undoubtedly taste the firm blow of the Iranian nation and the country’s defensive forces.”
Talks hang in balance
Iran and the U.S. are to meet Thursday for their third round of talks under the mediation of Oman, long an interlocutor between Tehran and the West. A flight carrying Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his team arrived late Wednesday in Geneva, where they will meet American officials led by special U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff.
Rubio said the discussions will be largely focused on Iran’s nuclear program and are important to gauge how serious the country is in reaching a deal to avoid potential U.S. military action. But he suggested a breakthrough was unlikely at this session, noting that the U.S. also has major concerns with Iran’s conventional weapons.
“We hope progress can be made,” Rubio told reporters during a trip to the Caribbean, saying diplomacy was Trump’s preference. “But it’s also important to remember that Iran refuses — refuses — to talk about the ballistic missiles to us or to anyone, and that’s a big problem.”
If the talks fail, uncertainty hangs over the timing of any possible attack.
If the aim of potential military action is to pressure Iran to make concessions in nuclear negotiations, it’s not clear whether limited strikes would work. If the goal is to remove Iran’s leaders, that will likely commit the U.S. to a larger, longer military campaign. There has been no public sign of planning for what would come next, including the potential for chaos in Iran.
The status of Iran’s nuclear program is another mystery. Trump said last year that American strikes “obliterated” it. Now dismantling whatever remains of the program appears to be back on the administration’s agenda. IAEA inspectors have not been allowed to inspect those sites and verify what remains.
There is also uncertainty about what any military action could mean for the wider region. Tehran could retaliate against the American-allied nations of the Persian Gulf or Israel. Oil prices have risen in recent days in part due to those concerns.

Five shot in Woodlawn neighborhood, police say
Five people were injured Wednesday evening in a mass shooting on Chicago’s South Side, according to authorities.
A Chicago police spokesperson confirmed to the Tribune that multiple people were shot at the 6600 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Wednesday night.
Just after 7 p.m., five people were transported to area hospitals from three separate locations, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt.
Three people were transported to the hospital after driving themselves to a fire station on East 67th Street, Merritt said. Another person was transported from the 1500 block of East 69th Place, while a fifth person was transported from Stony Island and East Marquette Road. Citing medical privacy laws, Merritt would not provide details on the victims’ conditions, ages, or genders.
Police were investigating multiple crime scenes. The details and circumstances of the shooting and whether police had made any arrests were unclear. Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Oluchi Okananwa scored 25 points, surpassing 1,200 for her career, and No. 14 Maryland defeated Northwestern 79-57 on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats have lost 10 straight for the second time this season and 20 of 22 following a 6-0 start.
Okananwa, one of four 1,000-point scorers on Maryland’s roster, now has 1,213 career points. The 17.4-points-per-game scorer has 51 in the last two games.
Northwestern was within eight points in the middle of the third quarter before Okananwa and Kyndal Walker each scored six points in a 12-2 run that gave the Terrapins a 63-45 lead heading to the final period.
The lead reached 24 points four times in the fourth quarter.
Maryland (23-6, 11-6 Big Ten) turned Northwestern’s 21 turnovers into 24 points. The Terps committed only six turnovers, leading to two points for Northwestern.
Among Maryland’s starters, Yarden Garzon scored 11 points, Addi Mack added 10 points and Saylor Poffenbarger grabbed 13 rebounds to reach 1,000 for her career. Walker scored 10 points off the bench.
Grace Sullivan, a Carmel graduate, scored 23 points for Northwestern (8-20, 2-15).
Okananwa scored eight points in the first quarter and Maryland led 20-14 after one. A 12-3 run in the second quarter helped push the lead to 15 points and the Terrapins went on to lead 44-31 at halftime.
Maryland leads the series with Northwestern 16-1 and has won the last eight games.

There, they criticized Trump’s policies on immigration and the economy, accusing him of harming Americans through border security measures and cost reductions that have actually benefited working families.
Over 80 Democrats announced their boycott ahead of time, including high-profile figures like House Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Senators Chris Van Hollen and Adam Schiff. Instead of engaging with Trump’s message of renewal, they chose to rally against what they called his “unpopular agenda,” even as polls show broad support for securing the border and prioritizing citizens.
In the aftermath, Democrats unleashed a barrage of complaints that only highlighted their detachment from everyday Americans.

CBS News, not exactly a bastion of conservatism, admitted Democrats buried themselves: “They can’t even applaud common sense things!” The contrast between American citizens and illegal aliens created a “visual moment” that exposed their priorities.

Vice President JD Vance torched Democrats for their spineless performance, pointing out “‘The American government should stand for American citizens, not illegal aliens,’ that shouldn’t be controversial — but apparently, it was to the Democrats.”

On the heart-wrenching moment during the speech with a young girl previously assaulted by an illegal alien, Vance urged “Whatever your politics; whatever your views on immigration policy, can’t we all stand and clap for an innocent young girl who shouldn’t have been assaulted and was being held by her dad?”
“It was such a heartwarming moment. I think every American, Democrat or Republican, thought that was a great moment for our country,” Vance continued, adding “The only people who didn’t believe that apparently were the Congressional Democrats in that Chamber. I think it shows again how broken their party is.”

“Democrats wouldn’t stand for that innocent little girl ASSAULTED by an illegal alien, but managed to survive!” Vance stressed, further slamming them for not standing against child transitions without parental consent or for putting American citizens first.
Amid the Democratic meltdown, Senator John Fetterman emerged as the rare exception, admitting he stood and clapped for key moments while questioning his party’s behavior.
“Well, for me, you know, I never check to see what the rest of people in my party would stand up and clap for,” Fetterman stated, adding “I clapped with a lot of those things that it seemed like others. I stood up and clapped to recognize the family that lost their daughter, the Ukrainian girl stabbed to death in North Carolina. And I stood up and I clapped that political prisoner from Venezuela, how you can’t celebrate those kinds of things?”
“I also celebrated all the veterans that were in the audience as well, too,” Fetterman continued, adding “And even more the political things like Erika Kirk. I stood up and I clapped for her as well, too.”
“Can’t we just be more kind to a widow? We just shouldn’t be that long ago that a widow with young children has her husband murdered, how we can’t just acknowledge that as well, too,” he noted.
