Matsui es baja del Clásico Mundial con Japón y está en duda para iniciar la temporada con los Padres
PEORIA, Arizona, EE.UU. (AP) — El relevista de los Padres Yuki Matsui no lanzará por Japón en el Clásico Mundial y el estatus del zurdo para el juego inaugural de San Diego en la temporada dentro de un mes resulta incierto debido a una distensión en la ingle izquierda.

U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer said tariff rates could climb to 15 percent or more for some nations as the Trump administration conducts probes into unfair trade practices after a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated parts of the previous tariff policy.
Greer appeared on Fox Business program Mornings With Maria, and spoke with host Maria Bartiromo about a shift to tools such as Section 301 targets unfair trade practices, including forced labor in supply chains and industrial excess capacity, as the Trump administration seeks to continue its sweeping tariff policy.
“Section 301 allows the office of the United States trade representative to investigate unfair trade practices on a country by country basis,” Greer said. “And we’ve identified a lot of these. This includes things like people who use forced labor in their supply chains.”
Greer says the new tool also could target countries with excess industrial capacity which builds beyond demand and floods U.S. markets.
Greer said investigations will include public comments, hearings, and consultations, whereafter Greer’s office will prepare reports of their findings. If countries do not adhere to suggestions in the reports, they could face higher duties.
“We expect to have continuity in what we’re doing,” Greer said, noting tariffs could exceed 15 percent for certain countries.
Greer also underscored the importance of enforcement.
“A big point of all the deals we’ve made over the past year, and these are real agreements, they’re substantive,” Greer said. “And countries have made specific commitments to change some of these unfair trading practices, but we have to make sure they do it.”
Greer said that the U.S. regularly discusses China’s excess capacity with Beijing. He said he does not expect the country to address the problem fully, noting that tariffs on China would remain 35–50 percent based on products, which aligns with previous agreements. Greer said he expects those deals to remain in place.
“We intend to really stick to the deal that we had before,” Greer said.
Greer affirmed that President Donald Trump’s initially imposed a 10 percent global tariff under Section 122, which lasts for up to 150 days, is meant to serve as a bridge to a new policy under Section 301.
Greer also confirmed the administration’s view that Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 remained law, and could be used in cases where countries discriminate against the United States in trade practices, allowing for a tariff of up to 50 percent on imports from specified countries.
He underscored his office’s focus was on Section 301 investigations, as well as strategic industry-focused Section 232 national security investigations.
“They’ve stood up to legal scrutiny in the past and they will again now,” Greer said.

US hockey player Brady Tkachuk slams White House TikTok video as ‘clearly fake’ after anti-Canada slur
OTTAWA, Ontario — U.S. hockey player Brady Tkachuk said Thursday that he did not appreciate a doctored TikTok video shared by the White House that made it look like he was disparaging Canadians after winning Olympic gold, calling it fake and something he would never say.
The video includes fabricated audio of Tkachuk referring to Canadians as “maple syrup-eating (expletive),” with the expletive bleeped out. The video carries a note saying it “contains AI-generated media.”
“It’s clearly fake because it’s not my voice and not my lips moving,” Tkachuk said. “I’m not in control of any of those accounts. … I know that those words would never come out of my mouth.”
Asked if he liked the video, Tkachuk said he did not: “I would never say that. That’s not who I am.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tkachuk also denied being the voice heard shouting “close the northern border” during Team USA’s celebratory phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump after Sunday’s 2-1 overtime win over Canada to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
“I’ve been seeing stuff that people think it’s me, but if you watch the video, that’s not my voice and something that I never say,” Tkachuk said. “I don’t really know how that kind of took a storm on its own when I play here and give everything I have here.”
Tkachuk, a 26-year-old Arizona native, is the captain of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and has played his entire career in the Canadian capital. He and other members of the U.S. team returned from Italy this week and are resuming the NHL season. Some attended Trump’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night in Washington and were cheered by those in attendance.
The U.S. women also beat Canada 2-1 in overtime, the first time the Americans swept both Olympic hockey tournaments. The celebration of the twin victories has been shadowed by U.S. politics almost since the final horn of the men’s game.
Talking on a speakerphone in the postgame locker room, Trump extended an invitation to the White House to the men’s team, then added, “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that.” The president also joked that if he didn’t extend the invitation, he would probably be impeached. Some of the men’s players chuckled, something at least one said they regretted later. Tkachuk said he understood how the moment on the phone call could have been viewed by the women’s players.
“I mean, I get it,” he said. “We supported them, they supported us. You can’t control what other people say.”

A number of the men’s players traveled to Washington on Tuesday and visited Trump in the White House before being guests at the State of the Union. Many of the women’s players, meanwhile, were on the way back to their professional or college clubs. They didn’t learn they had also had been invited until late Sunday, making it difficult to change travel plans already disrupted by bad weather on the East Coast.
In his address, Trump said plans were in the works to have the women’s team visit the White House, though it was unclear when that could happen. The earliest the team could travel to Washington would be in late spring after the conclusion of the PWHL season.

In the meantime, rapper Flavor Flav scheduled a July celebration for the women’s team in Las Vegas for those who can make it.
Hilary Knight earlier this week said she doesn’t want to let what she called a “distasteful” joke by Trump get in the way of a historic performance by American women at the Winter Games. Players for both U.S. teams have been uniform in saying how much they bonded in the athletes’ village in Milan and supported each other on their runs to gold.
“Our two teams were so close. We watched other events together. We went and supported them. We loved the women’s team. The women’s team loved us and we’re so proud that we had a clean sweep of gold medals and just so much respect for them and the other athletes,” said Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk, Brady’s brother.
Brady Tkachuk was asked about being a proud American while being the Senators captain at a moment of heightened tension between the countries.
“First and foremost, I’ve given absolutely everything I have as an Ottawa Senator — blood, sweat and tears,” Tkachuk said. “When you represent the U.S., being an American, it’s an honor. There are only three teams that have won the gold medal for the U.S., so to be part of that is special.”

There were rumors ahead of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday that some Democrats would be bringing illegal immigrants as their guests as some sort of silent protest against Trump’s immigration policies.
Well, at least one actually did, and may have committed a crime as a result.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) invited a young man with an expired student visa to sit in the gallery for Trump’s speech. Marcelo Gomes daSilva, 19, originally from Brazil, arrived in Milford, Massachusetts, at age six on a visa that has since lapsed. ICE arrested him last May at a holding facility in Burlington after agents initially came looking for his father. He applied for asylum after the detention. Moulton met him outside that facility in June, and the two apparently stayed in touch. Tuesday night’s invitation was the congressman’s way of giving him a platform.
But the Trump administration knew that Moulton and other Democrats were planning to do this.
“While Republicans are bringing victims of crimes committed by illegal criminal aliens to the State of the Union, some Democrats in Congress are planning to bring ILLEGAL ALIENS,” the Department of Homeland Security posted on X before the speech. “Democrats are once again prioritizing illegal aliens above the safety of American citizens.”
Democrats called out included Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), and Seth Moulton.
Moulton, “plans to bring illegal alien Marcelo Gomes DaSilva,” the post noted. “Gomes DaSilva is an illegal alien who has no right to be in our nation. We are committed to enforcing the law and fighting for the arrest, detention, and removal of aliens like him.”

It was a shot across the bow, and Moulton’s office clearly heard it. Moulton’s chief of staff was forced to hustle the young man out of the chamber mid-speech and into his congressional office, reportedly to keep him away from law enforcement.
“[He] is still an illegal alien and subject to removal proceedings,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News. “The Trump administration is committed to restoring the rule of law and common sense to our immigration system and will continue to fight for the arrest, detention, and removal of aliens who have no right to be in this country.”
Moulton defended his actions after the fact.
“He put a human face on this immigration tragedy, and what I think so many colleagues saw is not just an immigrant, but a great American, a great young American, an amazing patriot, someone whose courage we should all emulate in these challenging times,” Moulton told MSNOW.

Last year, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested and later convicted of felony obstruction charges for helping an illegal immigrant evade arrest. Dugan’s case established that the institutional trappings of a public office don’t inoculate anyone from the harboring statute, and it will be interesting to see what the Justice Department does in this case and whether Moulton, or perhaps his chief of staff, faces any legal consequences.
Another outstanding question is why Moulton brought Gomes DaSilva to the speech if he knew he was at risk of arrest and deportation? Perhaps the reason is that Moulton is running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democratic Senator Ed Markey and is seeking ways to pander to Democratic primary voters. Democratic primaries reward this kind of performative defiance on immigration. The only person who may not have fully grasped the game is Marcelo Gomes daSilva. Moulton claims he wanted to come to the speech to “confront” Donald Trump and his “MAGA Republican enablers,” but did he realize he was also being used as a campaign prop?

Después de tres derrotas consecutivas en el Torneo Apertura, el “Millonario” presentó una formación renovada y juvenil para abrochar el jueves una victoria 3-1 sobre Banfield en el estadio Monumental, en un partido correspondiente a la séptima fecha del certamen.
Los hinchas de River despidieron al idolatrado Gallardo con emoción y cariño, al tiempo que reprobaron con silbidos al plantel en general y a algunos jugadores en particular por las pobres actuaciones de los últimos tiempos, responsabilizándolos por la salida del “Muñeco”.

Jueza dicta prisión preventiva para alcalde de ciudad boliviana señalado por irregularidades

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — El alcalde de Santa Cruz, la ciudad más poblada de Bolivia, fue enviado el jueves a prisión preventiva acusado de presuntas irregularidades en la ejecución de obras en medio de una disputada campaña electoral por la elección de gobernadores y alcaldes prevista para el 22 de marzo.
Johnny Fernández fue ingresado al penal de esa ciudad del oriente boliviano tras una audiencia judicial mientras avanzan las investigaciones por los supuestos delitos de conducta antieconómica e incumplimiento de deberes, según dictaminó la jueza Alejandra Menacho.
De acuerdo con la acusación, el burgomaestre pagó supuestamente por el asfaltado de calles sin que las obras hayan sido concluidas. No se aclaró el jueves si ejercerá el cargo desde la cárcel o si será sustituido por un alcalde interino.
Fernández alegó que “siempre hay obstáculos en la ejecución de obras, las que no logran ejecutarse vuelven a programarse”, y cuestionó la ausencia en la audiencia del principal acusador, el concejal Manuel Saavedra, a quien las encuestas otorgan ventaja para ganar la alcaldía de esa ciudad, principal región agroindustrial del país.

NUEVA YORK (AP) — Los seres humanos y los neandertales se acercaban ocasionalmente cuando vivían en las mismas zonas hace decenas de miles de años. Pero no sabemos mucho sobre quién se emparejó con quién, ni por qué.
Un nuevo análisis genético ofrece algunos chismes antiguos: los emparejamientos fueron con mayor frecuencia entre mujeres humanas y varones neandertales.
El cómo ocurrió eso exactamente sigue siendo una enorme interrogante. ¿Se aventuraron mujeres humanas en poblaciones neandertales, o los varones neandertales se sintieron atraídos por enclaves humanos más grandes? ¿Fueron estas interacciones pacíficas, confusas, secretas o incluso violentas?
“No sé si alguna vez tendremos una respuesta definitiva sobre cómo ocurrió esto, ya que no podemos viajar atrás en el tiempo”, comentó el experto en genética de poblaciones Xinjun Zhang, de la Universidad de Michigan, sobre el nuevo análisis.
Pero el estudio, publicado el jueves en la revista Science, muestra “que cada vez que neandertales y humanos modernos se han apareado, ha habido una preferencia por varones neandertales y mujeres humanas modernas, y no al revés”, señaló el autor Alexander Platt, quien estudia genética en la Universidad de Pensilvania.
Los científicos saben que neandertales y humanos se aparearon porque existe un porcentaje pequeño, pero importante, de ADN neandertal en la mayoría de los humanos modernos fuera del África subsahariana, incluidos genes que pueden ayudarnos a combatir algunas enfermedades y hacernos más susceptibles a otras.
Pero también sabían que el ADN neandertal no está distribuido de manera uniforme en todo el genoma humano.
En particular, hay una sorprendente escasez de ADN neandertal en el cromosoma X humano, uno de los paquetes de genes en cada célula conocidos como cromosomas sexuales, en comparación con la cantidad de ADN neandertal en los otros cromosomas de la célula que no son sexuales.

Si más hembras humanas se aparearon con machos neandertales que al revés, a lo largo de miles de años se esperaría ver exactamente lo que encontraron: más ADN humano en los cromosomas X neandertales, y menos ADN neandertal en los cromosomas X humanos.
“Creo que han dado algunos pasos realmente importantes para completar piezas faltantes del rompecabezas”, manifestó Joshua Akey, quien estudia genómica evolutiva en la Universidad de Princeton y no participó en el nuevo estudio.
El estudio no puede descartar por completo otras explicaciones. Por ejemplo, apuntó Zhang, es posible que la descendencia de varones humanos y hembras neandertales simplemente no sobreviviera tan bien.
Pero la explicación más simple y probable, concluyó el estudio, también es la más interesante: “No es el resultado de una supervivencia del más apto estrictamente darwiniana”, afirmó Platt. “En realidad es el resultado de cómo interactuamos entre nosotros, y de cómo son nuestra cultura, nuestra sociedad y nuestro comportamiento”.

Man charged in Little Village jewelry store shooting that killed father, son
A Humboldt Park man has been extradited to Chicago on a warrant that ties him to the shooting deaths of a father and son and their Little Village jewelry store last November, according to Chicago police.
Chicago officers, along with the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested Muhammad Thomas, 35, on Tuesday in St. Louis, police said in a news release.
Thomas was identified as the gunman who robbed a business in the 3800 block of West 26th Street on Nov. 8 before killing two men who worked there.
Thomas faces two counts of first-degree murder and armed robbery tied to the deaths of Faustino Alamo, 63, and Luis Angel Alamo, 25.
On the day of the shooting, police said the gunman walked into the jewelry store and pulled out a gun before making off with an unknown amount of stolen goods. Two store employees chased the suspect outside onto 26th Street when the gunman opened fire, police said.
, according to Chicago Police Department reports obtained by the Tribune. It was then that the suspect opened fire, fatally striking both men. The older man was also armed with a Glock handgun, and he fired at least one round before the gun jammed, police said.
Thomas also faces several other felony charges tied to a July 2023 shooting in the 1700 block of West Maypole Avenue and a July 2024 armed robbery in the 2300 block of West Cermak Road, police said.
He is expected to appear before a Cook County judge for a detention hearing on Friday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Cook County Crime Stoppers had offered a $10,000 reward for information on the shooting, but it was unclear whether anyone would claim the prize.

Researchers Identify Chinese Influence Network That Targeted Trump, Japan Elections

Researchers uncovered a network of more than 330 social media accounts linked to China that targeted U.S. President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, human rights organizations, and other countries to push pro-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) narratives, according to a Feb. 26 policy brief.
The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a think tank based in Washington, discovered the network coordinating to push these narratives between December 2025 and February 2026 across X, YouTube, Tumblr, Blogger, and Quora.
The researchers identified six “clusters” of accounts that focused on different narratives, which tended to attack political figures seen as acting against the CCP’s interests.
The largest nexus included 151 accounts that targeted audiences in the United States, including ones posing as American citizens and criticizing Trump’s policies, such as claiming that he had caused or worsened the fentanyl crisis. Notably, accounts with few or no followers made posts that generated thousands of replies, indicating what researchers say is an “inauthentic amplification network.”
“This tactic is used to manipulate platform algorithms into pushing content into the feeds of real users,” the brief reads.
Another cluster attacked Takaichi before the Japanese election, portraying her as “corrupt and militaristic.”
A separate cluster of activity targeted Uyghur activists and promoted anti-Uyghur sentiments among Canadian and Japanese users. The CCP has persecuted the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang for years, which the United States has designated a genocide. The Chinese regime has conducted mass surveillance of Uyghurs and forced them into labor, and there is emerging evidence of forced organ harvesting of the group.
A fourth narrative accused U.S. organizations of “collusion” with Taiwan and payouts to undermine China while denying the CCP’s human rights abuses.
A fifth cluster accused the United States of interfering with Honduran elections, and a sixth amplified criticism of and supported protests against the Philippine president.
In some cases, the inauthentic accounts adopted names and images similar to those of official organizations, such as U.S. agencies.
“Collectively the accounts manipulate recommendation algorithms to push their narratives on unsuspecting social media consumers,” the FDD brief reads.
The think tank recommends that the United States develop counter-influence capabilities, pointing to the recently created position of director of cognitive advantage at the U.S. National Security Council as a fitting option to spearhead such an effort.
FDD researchers said the campaign “closely mirrors” the Chinese Spamouflage operation, one of the best-known CCP-backed online disinformation campaigns.
Research firm Graphika published a comprehensive report on Spamouflage in 2019, following Twitter’s takedown of 3.5 million posts linked to the CCP.
Graphika has published several reports on Chinese online influence campaigns over the years and, along with other researchers, says that influence campaigns using inauthentic accounts are increasingly using artificial intelligence.
Graphika recently uncovered a network of web domains posing as well-known news media outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. The domains were used to boost pro-CCP content and attack the spiritual practice Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, or Falun Dafa, was introduced to the public in China in the early 1990s and quickly grew; the state estimated that one in 13 Chinese citizens practiced it by the end of the decade, and it is now practiced worldwide. The peaceful spiritual practice is centered on the principles of truth, compassion, and forbearance and involves meditative exercises.
In 1999, the CCP effectively banned Falun Gong overnight and launched a violent persecution that continues today. Human rights organizations, independent investigators, and international media outlets, including The Epoch Times, have documented cases of illegal arrests, torture and brainwashing, and forced organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners.
The CCP has been known to carry out transnational repression of overseas practitioners of Falun Gong and foreign officials who have expressed support for the practitioners’ freedom of belief and expression.
