Senators Ask Treasury To Unilaterally Index Capital Gains, Bypassing Congress
Senators Ask Treasury To Unilaterally Index Capital Gains, Bypassing Congress
Senators Ted Cruz and Tim Scott are asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to unilaterally implement a major capital gains tax cut — by letting taxpayers adjust their cost basis to account for the effects of inflation. In a letter they intended to send on Tuesday, the pair will argue that it’s within Bessent’s authority to make such a move, without the need for legislation,
“Using your executive authority to … eliminate an unfair inflation tax on everyday Americans is the single most pro-growth economic action the administration can take unilaterally, and it would boost savings, spur investment, and create jobs nationwide,” Cruz and Scott wrote in the letter reviewed by the Washington Post.
To appreciate the injustice of the status quo, consider an investor who paid $10,000 for a stock in January 2010, and sold it for $15,000 in January 2026. On a CPI inflation-adjusted basis, the investment has only grown by $10.22 in real terms. However, the investor is forced to pay tax on a supposed gain of $5,000. By some estimates, a third of all unrealized capital gains represent the effects of inflation.
“American families and job creators should not have to pay taxes on phantom income,” said a group of more than 30 conservative organizations and individuals in a letter to President Trump last month. “Our tax brackets are indexed to inflation for a reason—we don’t think a worker who gets a raise that barely keeps pace with inflation should face a tax increase. The same principle should apply to savings.
In their letter to Bessent, the two senators also argue that capital gains tax relief can also help ease the woes of America’s pricy housing market, pointing to people who have large unrealized gains on their homes, making them reluctant to sell. Note that owner-occupied properties can currently use an exclusion of up to $250,000 in gains for singles, and $500,000 for married couples filing jointly.
Back in the day, before all Democrats were Bolsheviks, here is Chuck Schumer praising the idea of indexing capital gains taxation to inflation so that the 30 million Americans who file a capital gain in their taxes each year are not taxed on phantom gains. https://t.co/uyU5g7ntjb pic.twitter.com/BrkPKvHlhk
— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) March 3, 2026
Not everyone agrees about the legality of such a move by the Treasury Department. Last month, Americans for Tax Reform said, “The Treasury Department has the authority to redefine the calculation of capital gains taxes by excluding inflation from tax owed, based on several legal analyses going back several decades.” Skeptics point to a 1992 conclusion of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel that said such a move would exceed the department’s authority.
As they are prone to do with most tax-cut proposals, leftists whine that most of the benefit of a capital gains indexing would accrue to the wealthiest taxpayers — but that’s because they’re hardest hit by the current structure. For 2026, unmarried taxpayers with taxable income under $49,450, and married taxpayers with income under $98,900, have a 0% capital gains rate. The rate rises to 15% for those with taxable income under $545,500 for unmarrieds and $614,700 for married couples. Beyond that, the rate is 20%. Those with substantial net investment income are hit with another 3.8%.

US shows offensive muscle in a 15-1 exhibition win before the World Baseball Classic
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The United States wasted little time showing how potent its roster could be at the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
The Americans needed just three batters to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning of their exhibition game against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday after Bobby Witt Jr. singled, Bryce Harper doubled and three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge hit a two-run single.
The U.S. won 15-1 with a 19-hit performance in the 10-inning contest. Roman Anthony hit a two-run home run, Alex Bregman added a solo shot and Gunnar Henderson had a two-run double.
“We’ve got a great group of guys,” Harper said. ”Bobby Witt starting it at the top, being a table-setter up there for us. Obviously, one through nine we’ve got a pretty good dynamic. We’ve just got to continue to be good.”
National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes had a solid outing, giving up one run and one hit while striking out four over three innings. The right-hander gave up a leadoff double to Willy Adames, who scored on a groundout.
The 23-year-old retired his last nine batters.
“It’s a spring-training game, but it’s still surreal,” Skenes said. “It’s going to be exciting when we get to Houston and it’s the real deal.”
Left-hander Matthew Boyd followed Skenes, striking out four over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. David Bednar, Mason Miller, Griffin Jax and Gabe Speier each threw a scoreless inning.
The Americans are trying to win their second WBC title and first since 2017. Manager Mark DeRosa said he was thrilled that all the starters stayed in the dugout well after being taken out of the game, talking with their temporary teammates.
“You look down the dugout, you’re seeing Bregman talking to Roman Anthony, you’re seeing (Tarik) Skubal and Skenes on the top step, you’re seeing Judge and (Cal) Raleigh talking,” DeRosa said. “That’s what I wanted to create, the coaching staff wanted to create — an environment where these guys didn’t want to leave.”
Bregman — who lives in the Phoenix area — had several U.S. teammates over for dinner last night. He said 23-time U.S. gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps spoke to the group for motivation.
“He just shared what it takes,” Bregman said. “Controlling the controllables and getting after it.”
The U.S. will play one more exhibition game in Arizona on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies before traveling to Houston on Thursday to prepare for the group stage.
San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will start the opener against Brazil on Friday. Two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal is expected to start Saturday against Britain, followed by Skenes against Mexico on Monday.
New York Mets right-hander Nolan McLean is tentatively scheduled to start on Tuesday in the final pool-play game against Italy, even though he’s dealing with vertigo-like symptoms and hopes to join the U.S. in Houston. DeRosa said after Tuesday’s exhibition that McLean’s health was improving.
Skubal is expected to make just one start for the U.S. before rejoining the Detroit Tigers for the remainder of spring training.

Evidence connects man to killing of father, son at Little Village jewelry shop: prosecutors
Prosecutors on Tuesday said that an abundant amount of evidence, including surveillance video, smartphone data, DNA and witness identifications, tied a Humboldt Park man to the fatal shooting of a father and son outside of their Little Village jewelry store last fall.
Judge Rivanda Doss Beal ordered Muhammad Thomas detained until trial on first-degree murder and armed robbery charges connected to the deaths of Faustino Alamo, 63, and Luis Angel Alamo, 25. Prosecutors said Thomas’ juvenile nephew was also connected to the crime and allegedly shot one of the victims but was not yet charged as an investigation continued.
Thomas, 35, who was arrested in St. Louis, was charged late last week, but was hospitalized at the time of a detention hearing Friday and made his first appearance Tuesday.
Man charged in Little Village jewelry store shooting that killed father, son
Before the judge, Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara hashed out the day of events before and after authorities said Thomas killed the pair after stealing items inside their business on Nov 8. Using surveillance, authorities were able to capture Thomas and his vehicle in and around the area before and after the shooting later in the evening.
The shooting occurred following an apparent theft ruse by Thomas, who was captured on video twice stopping by Angelo’s Jewelry in the 3800 block of West 26th Street. The first time, he looked around and left. The second time, Thomas was buzzed into the business and used a cellphone to block the door jamb so that he could grab jewelry from a display case and flee the store without being locked inside, Pekara said.
But as Thomas attempted to leave the store, Luis Alamo grabbed him from behind. The men exchanged blows as Thomas tried to get to his waiting vehicle. With father and son trailing him, Thomas pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired at the younger Alamo, Pekara said. Thomas then exchanged gunfire with Faustino Alamo.
At some point, Thomas’ nephew exited the Maserati and shot Faustino Alamo, authorities allege. Luis Alamo picked up his father’s gun, but fell to the ground beside him. Thomas was able to flee and the Maserati that was seen driving was later found torched, but authorities were still able to take fingerprints and DNA from the vehicle that matched Thomas, Pekara said.
Days after the shooting, Thomas’ nephew and a second unidentified teen, also present inside the Maserati, were arrested in an unrelated matter. When asked about the jewelry shop homicides, the second teen identified Thomas as the driver of the getaway vehicle and identified both Thomas and the nephew in still images before and after the slaying.
Police also received identifications of Thomas from a former girlfriend, who recognized him from photos of the double homicide, and by a carjacking victim who was shot by Thomas during a prior incident, prosecutors said.
Further, a search warrant was used on Thomas’ smartphone, where they tracked his location around the jewelry store and the spot where he picked up the teens, authorities said.
When Thomas was arrested at a St. Louis hotel, authorities recovered two handguns that matched the bullet casings found at the shooting scene, they said.
Thomas also faces additional charges for three outstanding felony cases dating back to 2023. One was a July 2023 aggravated battery, where Thomas was accused of shooting and attempting to rob an acquaintance on the city’s Near West Side. A month later, authorities said Thomas bit a police officer’s arm and fled the scene of a Humboldt Park traffic stop, leaving his girlfriend behind. In 2024, Thomas was tied to a pawn shop smash-and-grab robbery where authorities said he cut himself on broken glass, leaving behind DNA evidence.
In approving the prosecution’s request for detention, the court called Thomas a threat to the community and witnesses, noting an “uptick in criminal behavior” as he was on pretrial release at the time of the deadly shooting and was a felon in possession of a firearm
Thomas will return to court later this month.

Nancy Mace And Ilhan Omar Go Full Jerry Springer Over Iran
Nancy Mace And Ilhan Omar Go Full Jerry Springer Over Iran
Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news,
Rep. Nancy Mace obliterated Ilhan Omar on X after the Somali-born Democrat raged about U.S. strikes on Iran during Ramadan, escalating calls to expose Omar’s alleged immigration fraud and boot her back to Somalia.
The feud erupted over the weekend when Mace trolled Omar and fellow Squad member Rashida Tlaib, sending them “thoughts and prayers” over the confirmed death of Iran’s Ayatollah in the U.S. strikes.

— Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) March 1, 2026
Omar fired back, accusing Mace of being drunk: “I hope you aren’t drunk and took your staff’s advice, Rashida and I don’t know this man and feel confident he didn’t care about us. Please restrain from drinking too much as you have been warned from your staff and stay off social media when you are drunk. I pray in his holy month you find peace and respect for your self.”

Mace then hit Omar with a direct reference to long-standing allegations of marrying her brother for immigration fraud.
So tell me, what was it like being married to your brother? https://t.co/N9pYmHEiAa
— Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) March 1, 2026
Mace doubled down Sunday on NewsMax with Ed Henry, dismissing Omar’s complaints about the timing of the strikes. “I don’t give a damn if it’s Ramadan. I don’t care if Muslims are fasting right now,” Mace said, adding “This was the right time with the right Intel, the right President, to go in there and do this.”
She then called for action: “I’m ready to denaturalize and deport her to Somalia.”

Mace said this after lambasting Omar for marrying her own brother and whining about Iran being attacked during Ramadan.

This isn’t the first time Mace has targeted Omar over immigration fraud claims. Just last week, Mace pushed the House Oversight Committee to subpoena records related to Omar, her former spouses, and family, aiming to prove allegations of marriage fraud to evade U.S. immigration laws. Federal marriage fraud carries penalties including prison, fines, denaturalization, and deportation.
The two have sparred since last year when Mace attempted to censure Omar over vile comments she made following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
? BREAKING: Ilhan Omar is officially in DANGER of being kicked off her committees and CENSURED for justifying Charlie Kirk’s assassination
Rep. Nancy Mace just filed filed the resolution to make it happen.
ALL REPUBLICANS SHOULD SUPPORT THIS!

— Nick Sortor (@nicksortor) September 16, 2025
The push follows a Justice Department probe into Omar’s finances and foreign ties that stalled under Biden but has been revived by Trump, who accused Omar of amassing up to $30 million in family wealth after arriving from Somalia with little.
Adding fuel, an investigation revealed Omar’s husband’s winery as a fake shell for alleged money laundering, with no license or operations despite revenue jumping to $5 million.
As Rashida Tlaib was caught chanting “KKK” during Republican “USA!” chants at Trump’s State of the Union, Omar also heckled Trump during the address, refusing to apologise and then bizarrely invoking racial slurs.

Tankers Burn From Strait Of Hormuz To Mediterranean Sea Amid Spillover War Risks
Tankers Burn From Strait Of Hormuz To Mediterranean Sea Amid Spillover War Risks
Times of Malta reports that the Russian-flagged LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz, identified as part of Russia’s shadow fleet, suffered an explosion while transiting the Mediterranean Sea between Malta and Libya.
Multiple sources told the local newspaper that Arctic Metagaz experienced a “series of explosions” and that it “was a case of deflagration; indications are that there was a huge explosion on board.”

— The Insider (@the_ins_ru) March 3, 2026
The outlet cited the UK-based global security risk firm EOS Risk Group, which said the explosion is due to a “drone attack.”
In a separate report, Reuters also says the LNG tanker may have been hit by a drone, with Ukraine suspected of carrying out the operation.
Reuters recently reported that three crude oil tankers have been damaged by blasts in the Mediterranean area, with the cause unknown.
Last December, Ukraine hit the Russian-linked tanker Qendil with kamikaze drones in the Mediterranean, marking the first shadow fleet tanker strike outside the Black Sea. Moscow has claimed Ukraine hit one of its tankers off West Africa, as well.
The world is seemingly at war, with the US-Iran conflict choking the critical maritime Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC has hit numerous oil and gas infrastructure targets in Gulf states and multiple tankers in the narrow waterway.
On Tuesday afternoon, President Trump announced that the US government will provide insurance for “ALL Maritime Trade” through the US Development Finance Corporation and will provide naval escorts in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the waterway remains open. This will be a huge relief for China.
From the Strait of Hormuz to the Mediterranean, numerous tankers are on fire …
… as the world seemingly seems to be accelerating toward major conflict.

Owners relieved after eight dogs briefly stolen outside Lincoln Park pet salon are returned
When Nicholas Iwaniuk brought home his half Australian shepherd, half Australian cattle dog named Shadow nine years ago, one of the first things he taught her was how to hug. But for a few hours Tuesday morning, Iwaniuk didn’t know if and when he’d embrace his best friend again.
Shadow was one of eight dogs stolen on Tuesday after someone took a sprinter van carrying the pets as the car sat parked outside of a Lincoln Park pet salon. Police ultimately recovered the van and all eight four-legged passengers, and had one person in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, but it was an anxious morning apart for Iwaniuk and his fellow owners.
When they were reunited, it was nothing but relief — relief that their pups were safe and that the worst-case scenario had the best possible outcome, owners told the Tribune.
The moment Iwaniuk saw Shadow, she tugged at her leash, charged forward and jumped into his arms.
“Just all the kisses in the world,” the Avondale resident recalled in a call Tuesday afternoon, choking back tears.
The dogs were in the van as part of a pet boarding service. They had been staying with Indiana-based Markay’s Castle of the Dogs and on Tuesday were due for pickup at Animal Lovers Pet Salon in the 2200 block of North Clybourn Avenue. That had been business owner David Cox’s routine for years: every Tuesday and Thursday, he stops by the Lincoln Park salon, drops off clients and picks up new dogs to bring back to his Tippecanoe boarding facility, which he affectionately calls “the Castle.”
But this week, his routine was interrupted. Cox told the Tribune that as he started to unload the dogs’ food and belongings, someone slipped into his van and drove away. He remembered stepping inside the salon and about 20 seconds later, the van — and the dogs — were gone.
Authorities were called to the salon just before 9 a.m., according to Chicago police. The van was recovered a “short time later” in the 1200 block of West Oakdale Avenue in Lakeview, more than a mile away from where it was initially reported stolen, police said.
A 46-year-old man was also arrested, police said, and charges were pending as of Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, all eight dogs — which included a labradoodle, mini dachshund, mountain dog, Aussie mix, sheepdog, lab mix and two huskies — were all found safe.
“It was just complete … joy,” Tom Scrivner said of the moment he reunited with his 14-year-old dog, Max. “He’s one of the family.”
Mark Botoske reunites with his dog, Winnie, on March 3, 2026, after the Markay’s Castle of the Dogs van that Winnie and other dogs were in was stolen. (Eileen T. Meslar/Chicago Tribune)
Owner Mark Botoske said his dog Winnie, like Iwaniuk and Shadow, welcomed him with hugs and kisses.
Since Winnie returned home, she’s been enjoying treats and TV with Botoske’s wife.
“We’ve been trying to find out more from her,” Botoske quipped, “but she’s not telling us anything.”

Feds Told New Mexico To Back Off Epstein; Then They Did Nothing…
Authored by José Niño via Headline USA,
In September 2019, federal prosecutors asked New Mexico to shut down its active investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s desert compound.
The state complied. The feds never held up their end of the deal.
According to a report by The Albuquerque Journal, former New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas revealed recently that prosecutors from the Southern District of New York pressured his office to cease its probe into sex trafficking at Epstein’s Zorro Ranch, a 7,500 acre estate south of Santa Fe that Epstein purchased from former Governor Bruce King’s family in 1993.
The stated reason was that parallel investigations could produce conflicting witness statements that defense lawyers might exploit.
In exchange, the feds promised to share their own findings. That promise was never fulfilled.
On September 8, 2019, assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, confirmed in an email that Balderas’s office had agreed to halt its work and turn over all materials, per a report by Time.
Epstein had died in federal custody less than a month earlier. By September 17, New Mexico’s Chief Deputy Attorney General Clara Moran had sent police reports, recorded witness testimony, and documents about Epstein’s use of state lands to the SDNY.
By July 2020, having received nothing in return, Balderas sent a letter urging federal prosecutors to seize the ranch through civil forfeiture.
“We believe that this ranch was utilized by Epstein and others to facilitate and conceal the ongoing trafficking of children,” the letter stated. The New York Times reported that he received no response. An internal federal email from December 2019 later confirmed that agents had “not searched the New Mexico property,” as the Times reported.
When the DOJ released over three million pages of Epstein files on January 30, 2026, none of New Mexico’s investigative records appeared among them, according to NPR.
The fallout has been swift. Reuters reported that Attorney General Raúl Torrez reopened the criminal investigation into Zorro Ranch on February 18.
The state House unanimously created a bipartisan truth commission with subpoena power and a budget exceeding $2 million, per a report by the Albuquerque Journal.
U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, who has reviewed unredacted federal files, confirmed that multiple prominent New Mexicans are named in the investigation.
Separately, Reuters New Mexico is now probing allegations from a redacted email claiming two foreign girls who died at the ranch were buried nearby at Epstein’s direction.
Comey, the prosecutor who brokered the original deal, was fired by the Trump DOJ in July 2025 without explanation.
The ranch itself was sold in 2023 to a Texas developer planning to convert it into a Christian retreat.
“The inquiry should have been expanded, not restricted,” Balderas said.
