4 Dead After Suspected Migrant Boat Capsizes Off San Diego
A wooden boat suspected to have been ferrying migrants toward the United States capsized in this week’s storm near San Diego, leaving at least four dead and four hospitalized, the Coast Guard announced Saturday.
The vessel was found by the US Border Patrol in the surf off Imperial Beach late Friday night (the southern end of San Diego). Six people were found on the beach shortly before midnight – one of whom was pronounced dead, and another who was rescued from underneath the boat.
Around two hours later, authorities received a report of someone in the water near Imperial Beach Pier – to which the Coast Guard responded and found three dead bodies floating in the ocean.
On Saturday the Coast Guard said it would continue to search for others who may have been on board, Several of the survivors claimed Mexican nationality and were turned over to DHS, while others remained unidentified.
“Our crews and partner agencies responded immediately, but this case demonstrates the severe risks posed to aliens attempting to enter the United States by sea in unstable vessels,” said Coast Guard Capt. Robert Tucker, Sector San Diego commander.
A massive storm hit Southern California this weekend – prompting flash flood and mudslide warnings, while the wrecked vessel was a tiny panga – a single or twin engine open fishing boat that’s commonly used by smugglers.
Migrants are increasingly turning to the risky alternative offered by smugglers to travel by sea to avoid heavily guarded land borders, including off California’s coast. Pangas leave Mexico in the dead of night and sometimes chart hundreds of miles north.
There have been several incidents in recent years of migrant vessels capsizing en route to California.

In 2023, eight people were killed when similar smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach in heavy fog and one capsized in the surf – one of the deadliest smuggling incidents on record.
In 2022, a San Diego man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for piloting a smuggling boat loaded with 32 migrants, which smashed apart in powerful surf off the coast killing three and injuring over two dozen.

Iran, having seen its key nuclear facilities blown up by the Israeli and US surprise attacks of last June, and having long been under Washington and Western-led sanctions, could now be signaling a major olive branch. It is telling the West that there is nothing to worry about in terms of allegations of uranium enrichment or that it is striving toward a nuclear weapon.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that the Islamic Republic has been unable to enrich uranium since the 12-day US-Israeli war.
In a very blunt and direct answer given to an Associated Press journalist visiting Iran, Araghchi stated “There is no undeclared nuclear enrichment in Iran.” He described that “All of our facilities are under the safeguards and monitoring” of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Araghchi said.
“There is no enrichment right now because our facilities – our enrichment facilities – have been attacked,” he asserted.
Still, he defended Iran’s right to enrich as a matter of national sovereignty, saying “Iran’s right for enrichment, for peaceful use of nuclear technology, including enrichment, is undeniable.”
“We have this right, and we continue to exercise that, and we hope that the international community, including the United States, recognize our rights and understand that this is an inalienable right of Iran. And we would never give up our rights,” he added.
This has remained a consistent and standard argument from Iranian leaders – that it is not seeking a nuke, and that all its efforts are for peaceful nuclear energy needs. Various Ayatollahs over the years have even called nuclear weapons ‘unIslamic’.
Throughout its prior limited engagement with Washington on the nuclear issue, the Trump administration has continued to insist on zero enrichment and also sought limits on Iran’s ballistic missile program.
But then the June war happened and all official dialogue has been off. President Trump has all along proclaimed the end of Iran’s ability to enrich, and it is significant that Tehran is now admitting this is accurate.

However, it could also be a bluff. Iran now has every incentive to develop secret nuclear weapons while telling the world there is no enrichment happening.
Many analysts say that another round of fighting between Iran and Israel could be on the horizon. For starters, the Netanyahu government does not believe that Iran has given up its enrichment efforts, but Tel Aviv is likely being held back by the Trump White House.

FAA lifts order slashing flights, allowing commercial airlines to resume their regular schedules
The Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday it is lifting all restrictions on commercial flights that were imposed at 40 major airports during the country’s longest government shutdown.
Airlines can resume their regular flight schedules beginning Monday at 6 a.m. EST, the agency said.
The announcement was made in a joint statement by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
Citing safety concerns as staffing shortages grew at air traffic control facilities during the shutdown, the FAA issued an unprecedented order to limit traffic in the skies. It had been in place since Nov. 7, affecting thousands of flights across the country.
Impacted airports included large hubs in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
The flight cuts started at 4% and later grew to 6% before the FAA on Friday rolled the restrictions back to 3%, citing continued improvements in air traffic controller staffing since the record 43-day shutdown ended.
The FAA statement said an FAA safety team recommended the order be rescinded after “detailed reviews of safety trends and the steady decline of staffing-trigger events in air traffic control facilities.”
The statement said the FAA “is aware of reports of non-compliance by carriers over the course of the emergency order. The agency is reviewing and assessing enforcement options.” It did not elaborate.
Cancellations hit their highest point Nov. 9, when airlines cut more than 2,900 flights because of the FAA order, ongoing controller shortages and severe weather in parts of the country. But conditions began to improve throughout the week as more controllers returned to work amid news that Congress was close to a deal to end the shutdown. That progress also prompted the FAA to pause plans for further rate increases.
The agency had initially aimed for a 10% reduction in flights. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has said worrisome safety data showed the move was necessary to ease pressure on the aviation system and help manage worsening staffing shortages at air traffic control facilities as the shutdown entered its second month and flight disruptions began to pile up.
Air traffic controllers were among the federal employees who had to continue working without pay throughout the shutdown. They missed two paychecks during the impasse.
Duffy hasn’t shared the specific safety data that prompted the cuts, but he cited reports during the shutdown of planes getting too close in the air, more runway incursions and pilot concerns about controllers’ responses.
Airline leaders have expressed optimism that operations would rebound in time for the Thanksgiving travel period after the FAA lifted its order.

After Chicago Bears special teams had its miscues, returner Devin Duvernay found ‘a moment to make a play’
MINNEAPOLIS — It could have been just idle words of encouragement that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams offers to any random teammate he chats up before a game, but what he told kick returner Devin Duvernay turned out to be prescient.
“I told Duve, actually, right before the game, he was going to make a play for us this day. And he did just that.”
With the Bears down 17-16 with 50 seconds left in the game, Duvernay fielded Will Reichard’s 61-yard kickoff at his own 4-yard line, ran to the opposite side and up the right sideline for 56 yards to the Minnesota 40-yard line, where he was pushed out of bounds by linebacker Eric Wilson.
“Man, just a lot of green grass and (my) eyes lit up,” Duvernay said. “A moment to make a play.”
Four plays later, Cairo Santos booted a 48-yard field goal to seal the Bears’ 19-17 win, their fifth fourth-quarter comeback victory of the season.
“We absolutely needed that,” Bears coach Ben Johnson said about Duvernay’s kick return. “He had been waiting for one of those. He’s come really close a number of times and then he was able to capture it on the bounce there and got us right there on the cuff of field goal range.
“He got one of the game balls for that.”

It was the fifth time this season the Bears rallied in the fourth quarter to win. It was the second time this season that special teams came up with a special play to steal a victory.
In Week 4, Josh Blackwell blocked Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson’s 54-yard field goal try — about a minute after the Bears scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:39 left — to preserve a 25-24 stunner at Allegiant Stadium.
Really, that’s where the “find a way” Bears began.
After blowing out the Dallas Cowboys 31-14, the Raiders game was the first in which the Bears offense, defense or special teams turned what looked like certain defeat into a surprise victory:
The defense’s late fumble recovery against the Washington Commanders.
Colston Loveland’s 58-yard touchdown catch to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.
Caleb Williams’ 17-yard scoring scramble to foil the New York Giants.
And on Sunday, it was Duvernay’s turn for theatrics.
“Honestly, I was just trying to get down the sideline, maximize the return, and just put ourselves in a great position to get some points to win the game,” he said. The return was Duvernay’s longest of the season and third-longest in his six-year career.
Fellow returner Blackwell made a key block on Tavierre Thomas to spring the return.
Blackwell said it was by design for Duvernay to run that way, and there was no way either was going to take a knee.
“I mean, there was nothing special to it, we’re going to run this play and this was going to happen,” Blackwell said. “We’re going to take it regardless.”
Duvernay said his eyes got wide when he saw Blackwell make his block: “It was drawn up perfect.”

Santos saw Duvernay’s return unfold, too, but he had a different thought running through his mind.
“Just prayers answered,” he said.
Earlier in the quarter, Santos missed a 45-yard attempt, wasting an eight-play, 38-yard drive and a chance to go up 19-10 with 8:13 left in the game.
The Vikings punted after taking over on their 35, but the Bears’ drive fizzled. On Minnesota’s next possession, J.J. McCarthy hit Jordan Addison in the end zone for the go-ahead score, 17-16.
“When they scored it’s kind of in my head, just talking to the Lord, just praying to get a chance to make the game-winning kick. So when I felt like Duvernay broke that (return), especially a game that we needed a big play on special teams, he came through.
“And those are answered prayers.”
It was almost special teams that cursed the Bears, and it would not have been the first time this season.
Flash back to the season opener, when Santos failed to send the kickoff out of the end zone to preserve clock, and the Vikings were able to return it, which helped them upset the Bears 27-24 at Soldier Field.
Santos’ miss wide left Sunday in Minneapolis was his fourth this season.
“I missed one after having been in a great rhythm all game, and just feel like it slipped from me there,” he said. On the final attempt, “I just had full confidence that I was going to put that ball through and find a way to bounce back from a previous miss.”
Santos added, “We just need to clean up a lot of special teams so we can help the team win in a bigger fashion.”
Later in the game, the punt coverage unit gave up Myles Price’s 43-yard return to the Bears 24-yard line.
Two plays later, Vikings running back Jordan Mason scooted in from 16 yards out to draw within 16-10.
Duvernay said the special teams group never lost heart.
“Game’s not over till it’s zero-zero-zero on the clock,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep playing the game … and we know our plays will come.”

Nearly 21 years later, family of slain Gold Coast man finds comfort as prosecutors bring murder charges
Stanford Projansky waited more than 20 years to look into the eyes of the man accused of the execution-style fatal shooting of the oldest of his three sons.
Though the 91-year-old Glenview man died just two months shy of the long-awaited day, his two other sons were among two dozen relatives and friends who packed a Cook County courtroom over the weekend to bear witness and to honor a loved one they lost too soon.
Dec. 18 marks 21 years since 40-year-old Kent Projansky was killed in his 30th-floor apartment in the Elm Street Plaza building in the 1100 block of North Dearborn Street in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. Police said there were no signs of forced entry to his apartment, which did not appear ransacked or otherwise disturbed.
On Saturday, David Barklow made his first court appearance in Chicago on first-degree murder charges. Prosecutors said Barklow, 68, a former neighbor of the slain man, has been in custody since April 17 after being arrested at an airport in Lima, Peru, in the murder case and a related warrant alleging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Following lengthy extradition proceedings in South America, he accompanied FBI agents back to Chicago on Friday.
The victim’s middle brother, Todd Projansky, on Sunday said the family first learned Friday about the criminal charges and Barklow’s return to the states. Within 24 hours, Projansky said he locked eyes for the first time with Barklow during a court hearing he wasn’t sure would ever come.
“It was very difficult (to hold out hope),” said Projansky, a Buffalo Grove attorney, in a Tribune interview. “As a somewhat positive person, I kind of always thought it would come, but being realistic with myself, I really questioned sometimes if we’d ever get here.”
He described his brother as friendly and generous, a bachelor who was an overly indulgent uncle who spoiled his niece and nephews, including taking them to MLB All-Star Games. And he was a “champion of underdogs,” Todd Projansky said, recalling when his brother took a Streetwise vendor to a Bulls game, or other acts of kindness to those who were less fortunate.
“He had a soft spot for everyone,” Projansky said.
Three days after the killing, prosecutors said, police responded to a report of a discarded duffel bag found inside a garbage can behind a bank about 14 miles from Kent Projansky’s apartment. The bag contained bloody clothes, a cardboard ammunition box and a .32-caliber revolver, which crime lab experts later linked to the ballistic evidence recovered from the killing.
Despite the promising lead, the investigation went cold. Todd Projansky said his brother’s unsolved killing devastated the family, who also feared for their own safety, not knowing if the crime was random or if Kent had been targeted.
“My kids would ask if someone was going to come in and murder me,” said Projansky, who asked his local police department to drive by his home for well-being checks in the days following his brother’s death. “We didn’t know who did it or why they did it. We suspected and continue to suspect it was about money, but we didn’t know. With four babies in the house, I wanted to be as careful as I could be.”
Projansky said he and his family regularly called police for updates, trying to hold out hope.
Then, in 2017, police resubmitted evidence from the discarded duffel bag using more advanced technology and found that seven latent impressions on items inside the bag, including one on the ammunition box, matched Barklow, prosecutors said. They said his mother lived in Park Ridge at the time, about 2 miles from where the duffel bag was recovered.
Todd Projansky said his family first heard Barklow’s name in late 2019, when the Chicago man was taken into custody for questioning. Authorities said they obtained Barklow’s DNA samples and fingerprints, but he was released without charges as further forensic testing continued.
Prosecutors said Barklow lived across the street from Kent Projansky at the time of the 2004 killing and, during a 2019 interview, “admitted having purchased weed from the victim” inside his apartment, but he denied “seeing the victim preceding his death” or having knowledge about the duffel bag and its contents.
As the investigation continued, in late 2019, authorities said Barklow left Chicago. According to the Department of Homeland Security, he flew to Sweden and eventually ended up in Ecuador, where he had been living before being taken into custody on April 17 at the airport in Peru.
Prosecutors said further forensic testing linked items inside the duffle bag to the victim and Barklow. Records show Barklow has a 1995 federal bank fraud conviction. He is being held in Cook County Jail, and is due back in court Monday.
Todd Projansky said though the arrest “doesn’t bring my brother back,” he and his other brother Drew are thankful for law enforcement’s efforts. He urged more funding to speed up crime lab backlogs, which, he said, caused delays in the investigations.
Projansky said his mother, Sheila, 86 and battling dementia, is unaware of the criminal case. His father, who died Sept. 10, knew of the 2019 lead surrounding Barklow and was anxiously awaiting the court proceedings.
“My father said one of his purposes in life was to see Barklow in person in a prison jumpsuit,” he said.
