Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine faces a stark choice and risks losing American support over US peace plan

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told his country in an address Friday that it could face a pivotal choice between standing up for its sovereign rights and preserving the American support it needs, as leaders discuss a U.S. peace proposal seen as favoring Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, cautiously welcomed the U.S. plan to end Moscow’s nearly four-year war in Ukraine, which contains many of the Kremlin’s longstanding demands while offering limited security guarantees to Ukraine. Putin said it “could form the basis of a final peace settlement,” while accusing Ukraine of opposing the plan and being unrealistic.

The plan foresees Ukraine handing over territory to Russia — something Kyiv has repeatedly ruled out — while reducing the size of its army and blocking its coveted path to NATO membership.

Zelenskyy, in his address hours earlier, did not reject the plan outright, but insisted on fair treatment while pledging to “work calmly” with Washington and other partners in what he called “truly one of the most difficult moments in our history.” He said he spoke for almost an hour Friday with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll about the peace proposal.

“Currently, the pressure on Ukraine is one of the hardest,” Zelenskyy said in the recorded speech. “Ukraine may now face a very difficult choice, either losing its dignity or the risk of losing a key partner.”

Speaking at a meeting of Russia’s National Security Council, Putin called the plan “a new version” and “a modernized plan” of what was discussed with the U.S. ahead of his Alaska summit with President Donald Trump in August, and said Moscow has received it. “I believe that it, too, could form the basis for a final peace settlement,” he said.

But he said the “text has not been discussed with us in any substantive way, and I can guess why,” adding that Washington has so far been unable to gain Ukraine’s consent. “Ukraine is against it. Apparently, Ukraine and its European allies are still under illusions and dream of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia on the battlefield,” Putin said.

Trump says he wants Ukraine to respond within a week

Trump said Zelenskyy is going to have to come to terms with the U.S. proposal, and if he doesn’t, “they should just keep fighting, I guess.”

Asked by reporters about Zelenskyy saying his country faces a difficult choice, Trump alluded to their tense meeting in February that led to a brief rupture in the U.S.-Ukraine relationship: “You remember right in the Oval Office not so long ago? I said you don’t have the cards.”

Trump in a radio interview earlier Friday said he wants an answer from Zelenskyy on his 28-point plan by Thursday, but said an extension is possible to finalize terms.

“I’ve had a lot of deadlines, but if things are working well, you tend to extend the deadlines,” Trump said in an interview on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” on Fox News Radio. “But Thursday is it — we think an appropriate time.”

While Zelenskyy has offered to negotiate with the U.S. and Russia, he signaled Ukraine has to confront the possibility of losing American support if it makes a stand.

He urged Ukrainians to “stop fighting” each other, in a possible reference to a major corruption scandal that has brought fierce criticism of the government, and said peace talks next week “will be very difficult.”

Europe says it will keep supporting Ukraine

Zelenskyy spoke earlier by phone with the leaders of Germany, France and the United Kingdom, who assured him of their continued support, as European officials scrambled to respond to the U.S. proposals that apparently caught them unawares.

Wary of antagonizing Trump, the European and Ukrainian leaders cautiously worded their responses and pointedly commended American peace efforts.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured Zelenskyy of “their unchanged and full support on the way to a lasting and just peace” in Ukraine, Merz’s office said.

The four leaders welcomed U.S. efforts to end the war. “In particular, they welcomed the commitment to the sovereignty of Ukraine and the readiness to grant Ukraine solid security guarantees,” the statement added.

The line of contact must be the departure point for an agreement, they said, and “the Ukrainian armed forces must remain in a position to defend the sovereignty of Ukraine effectively.”

Starmer said the right of Ukraine to “determine its future under its sovereignty is a fundamental principle.”

Existential threat to Europe

European countries see their own futures at stake in Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion and have insisted on being consulted in peace efforts.

“Russia’s war against Ukraine is an existential threat to Europe. We all want this war to end. But how it ends matters,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in Brussels. “Russia has no legal right whatsoever to any concessions from the country it invaded. Ultimately, the terms of any agreement are for Ukraine to decide.”

Trump in his radio interview pushed back against the notion that the settlement, which offers plentiful concessions to Russia, would embolden Putin to carry out further malign action on his European neighbors.

“He’s not thinking of more war,” Trump said of Putin. “He’s thinking punishment. Say what you want. I mean, this was supposed to be a one-day war that has been four years now.”

A European government official said the U.S. plans weren’t officially presented to Ukraine’s European backers.

Many of the proposals are “quite concerning,” the official said, adding that a bad deal for Ukraine would also be a threat to broader European security.

The official was not authorized to discuss the plan publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

European Council President Antonio Costa, in Johannesburg, said of the U.S. proposals, “The European Union has not been communicated any plans in (an) official manner.”

Proposal meets with skepticism in the US Senate

“This so-called ‘peace plan’ has real problems, and I am highly skeptical it will achieve peace,” said Sen. Roger Wicker, the Republican chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Ukraine should not be forced to give up its lands to one of the world’s most flagrant war criminals in Vladimir Putin.”

Wicker added that Ukraine should be allowed to determine the size of its military and Putin should not be rewarded with assurances from the U.S.

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said there’s “general concern and alarm that this is a Russian wish list proposal.”

Ukraine examines the proposals

Ukrainian officials said they were weighing the U.S. proposals, and Zelenskyy said he expected to talk to Trump about it in coming days.

A U.S. team began drawing up the plan soon after U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with Rustem Umerov, a top adviser to Zelenskyy, according to a senior Trump administration official who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The official added that Umerov agreed to most of the plan, after making several modifications, and then presented it to Zelenskyy.

However, Umerov on Friday denied that version of events. He said he only organized meetings and prepared the talks.

He said technical talks between the U.S. and Ukraine were continuing in Kyiv.

“We are thoughtfully processing the partners’ proposals within the framework of Ukraine’s unchanging principles — sovereignty, people’s security, and a just peace,” he said.

Hatton contributed from Lisbon, Portugal. Harriet Morris in Tallinn, Estonia, Geir Moulson in Berlin, Angela Charlton in Paris, Pan Pylas in London, and Aamer Madhani in Washington also contributed reporting.

US Issues NOTAM Flight Alert Of “Heightened Military Activity” Over Venezuela

US Issues NOTAM Flight Alert Of “Heightened Military Activity” Over Venezuela

It has been weeks since Trump’s major military build-up off Venezuela began, and the threat of potential escalated military action against Caracas remains imminent. This scenario may have just gotten a big step closer with a fresh NOTAM alert issued by the FAA.

The FAA issued the NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions), or alert notifying pilots of potential serious hazards in certain airspace, for the Maiquetía Flight Information Region. This area covers all of Venezuela and parts of the southern Caribbean sea.

Importantly, the warning cites a “potentially hazardous situation” and “heightened military activity” over Venezuela and waters just off its coast, and is to expire Febuary 19th, 2026.

Already there’s a US aircraft carrier group patrolling waters in the Caribbean. Many analysts believe this is a sure sign that some kind of military intervention against Venezuela is coming.

Trump may order airstrikes and attacks on cartels at land targets in Venezuela, after already sending drone strikes against over twenty alleged drug boats in the last many weeks, killing over 80.

The fresh NOTAM reads:

“The worsening security situation and heightened military activity in or around Venezuela. threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight, the arrival and departure phases of flight, and/or airports and aircraft on the ground.”

And more…

Trump had told reporters on Monday that he wouldn’t rule out sending troops into Venezuela amid the US naval build-up. Maduro in response has said that if Trump ordered military strikes on Venezuela, it would be the “biggest mistake of his life.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has just issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for the entirety of the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (SVZM), which covers all of Venezuela and a large section of the Southern Caribbean, stating that operators should exercise… pic.twitter.com/dhynbRuZoi

As we reported earlier, following the first US strikes on boats in the region, Maduro sent a letter to Trump urging for diplomacy and stating his readiness to talk with Trump’s special envoy, Ric Grennel, who met directly with the Venezuelan leader back in January.

Takeaways from Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani visit: Both men get something they want, GOP loses a punching bag

The two had called each other “fascist” and “communist,” but when President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani faced reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, they were just two iconoclastic New York politicians who were all smiles.

The much-anticipated face-to-face showed how the politicians’ shared love of New York City — and no doubt some political calculus — could paper over months of insults. Both men used a plainspoken, wry approach tailor-made for the age of social media to make their points, and each left the meeting with something he needed.

Here are some takeaways from the appearance.

Republicans lose their punching bag — at least for now

Trump’s party had been queueing up a 2026 campaign warning that the Democratic Party is getting taken over by people like Mamdani, a 34-year-old Muslim and self-described democratic socialist who may not play as well west of the Hudson River. But Trump swatted all that down.

“The better he does, the happier I am,” Trump, a native New Yorker, said of Mamdani.

Trump denied a charge by Elise Stefanik, the Republican candidate for New York governor and one of his political allies, that Mamdani, a longtime critic of Israel, is a “jihadist,” saying, “I just met with a man who’s a very rational person” and adding that they both wanted peace in the Middle East.

Trump said he’d happily live in Mamdani’s New York, countering conservative suggestions that rich New Yorkers should flee the city. He praised Mamdani’s decision to keep New York’s police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, noting she was a friend of the president’s daughter Ivanka. And he demurred when asked about Mamdani’s democratic socialism, saying instead that the two had many similar ideas. He noted — and Mamdani emphasized repeatedly — that they’d both run for office on affordability.

It was an inconvenient defense of democratic socialism on the very day that House Republicans muscled through a resolution condemning socialism with the express intent of embarassing their rivals over the mayor-elect. Trump even threw in some praise of another Republican punching bag, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, also a democratic socialist.

“Bernie Sanders and I agreed on much more than people thought,” Trump said. He added proudly that Mamdani was wowed by a painting of iconic Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt — yet another GOP bugbear — in the Oval Office.

Trump, struggling amid mounting dissatisfaction in his first year back in office, may see an advantage in lashing his star to that of the latest avatar of affordability.

Of course, both Trump and Mamdani are experts at the 21st century art of political brawling and Trump is notoriously mercurial, so the detente may be short-lived. But it’s notable while it’s here.

Mamdani’s visit lets Trump talk about affordability

For the past few weeks, Trump has struggled to address voters’ concerns about inflation, suggesting that prices are already down and any claims otherwise are a “con job by the Democrats.” But Mamdani stomped his competition in the mayoral election by focusing relentlessly on the cost of rent, groceries and other basic needs — a successful strategy that White House officials noticed as they think about next year’s midterms.

The president leaned into that message in their White House meeting, saying he sees his efforts as complementary. He said that just like Mamdani, he too wants to build more housing. The president didn’t lay out any new policies as he repeated his claims that inflation has dropped under his watch.

“Anything I do is going to be good for New York if I can get prices down,” Trump said. “The new word is affordability. Another word is just groceries. You know, it’s sort of an old-fashioned word, but it’s very accurate. And they’re coming down. They’re coming down.”

The challenge for Trump is whether voters trust that he’s genuinely addressing inflation. The consumer price index has jumped to an annual rate of 3% compared to 2.3% in April, when the president rolled out his “Liberation Day” import taxes.

A confidence boost for Mamdani — with implications for his agenda

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani’s opponents claimed his far-left politics and relative inexperience would make him an easy target for Trump. Friday’s meeting will likely quiet those concerns — at least for now. Trump seemed thoroughly impressed with Mamdani, describing him as “a very rational man” who “wants to see New York be great again.”

“We had some interesting conversations and some of his ideas are the same that I have,” Trump added.

For his part, Mamdani struck a delicate balance: flattering Trump in broad terms, while avoiding sensitive subjects or concessions that could enrage his base. He noted repeatedly that many of his own voters were former Democrats who switched over to Trump in the previous election — a line the president seemed to like.

The backing of the president could help the mayor-elect avoid a National Guard deployment in New York, which Trump previously threatened as a likely outcome of his election victory. Trump also indicated that federal funding cuts could be off the table — a move that would give Mamdani a much better shot at achieving his ambitious agenda, which requires raising revenue for programs like universal free childcare.

“I want him to do a great job and will help him do a great job,” Trump said.

Defamation lawsuit against Township High D113 parent dismissed: ‘Unequivocal victory’

A lawsuit against a Township High School District 113 parent over things she posted in criticizing a teacher — for a social media post criticizing the Israeli military — has been dismissed, perhaps the final chapter in the legal saga of a controversy dating back to 2023.

Britnee Kenyon is the theater director at Deerfield High School. In 2023, Kenyon, who is Jewish, shared a post on her social media — which was being followed by some district students — from American author Ibram X. Kendi, who criticized the Israeli military in regards to the Israel-Hamas War and accused it of ethnic cleansing.

The post drew extensive backlash from some parents, and days later, then-board President Daniel Struck put out a statement to the community referencing and condemning Kenyon’s post. Kenyon was later reprimanded for her social media posts and alleged inappropriate online communications and behavior.

Struck would later resign in February 2024 in relation to the growing controversy, and Kenyon filed a lawsuit last year against the district, claiming a violation of her First Amendment rights.

In October, the district settled with Kenyon, paying her $200,000, reimbursing her more than $6,500 for fees paid to ADR Systems Inc. in connection with mediation, and crediting her 42 days of sick leave. As part of the agreement, the board denied all allegations of unlawful conduct, as did Kenyon.

But the legal saga took another turn because district parent Michelle Hammer Bernstein had been another defendant in the lawsuit and was not part of the settlement agreement. She had faced several accusations of defamation and invasion of privacy over her posts and statements online criticizing Kenyon, and allegedly pushing for Kenyon’s removal from the district.

Bernstein was represented by the American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative Christian-based legal organization.

The ACLJ framed the case as an issue of First Amendment rights, describing the lawsuit as retaliation against a parent attempting to, “engage school leaders and express their opinions concerning, among other things, teacher conduct and the improper indoctrination of students.”

According to documents from the United States District Court Northern District of Illinois, the case was terminated by a voluntary dismissal from the plaintiff, after filing a stipulation of dismissal signed by all parties, including Kenyon and Bernstein.

The dismissal of the lawsuit against Bernstein, which included no monetary exchange, was an “unequivocal victory,” an ACLJ representative said in a statement, “for Ms. Bernstein and for every parent who has ever feared speaking up about their children’s education.”

“While the legal matter has been resolved favorably, parents have both the right and the responsibility to stand up against antisemitism, especially in our schools,” the statement said. “The ACLJ remains committed to defending parents and citizens who face legal retaliation for exercising their fundamental constitutional rights.”

In a statement, Bernstein said she had been facing “huge financial risk and an unknown outcome,” but she “was not going to back down or be silenced.”

“The Holocaust began with propaganda targeted at youth,” she said. “‘Never again,’ are not just words  We owe it to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, the 1300+ innocent lives kidnapped, raped and murdered on October 7, and to every Jewish victim who fought for their lives to always speak truth — loudly, openly, and without fear.”
