Perú: expresidente Vizcarra niega buscar asilo, dice estar listo para ir a prisión antes de condena

LIMA (AP) — El expresidente peruano Martín Vizcarra negó el martes que esté buscando asilo o intentar fugarse del país en la víspera de que se conozca una sentencia en su contra por un caso de presunta corrupción que se remonta a cuando era gobernador de la región de Moquegua, en el sur de Perú.
Vizcarra afirmó a la prensa que permanecerá en Perú y que está “preparado para afrontar lo que venga”, incluso un internamiento en un penal si así lo determina el Poder Judicial.
“Estaré el día de mi sentencia sin fugarme, sin pensar en ninguna embajada… soy hombre de palabra y mañana estaré ahí presente”, expresó el exmandatario (2018-2020) a la emisora local Exitosa.
El Poder Judicial programó para el miércoles 26 de noviembre la lectura de la sentencia en el proceso en el que Vizcarra está acusado de haber recibido unos 611.000 dólares en sobornos de empresas constructoras a cambio de favorecerlas con contratos de obras públicas cuando dirigía Moquegua entre 2011 y 2014. Dos empresarios aseguraron durante el proceso que le pagaron para conseguir contratos.
Vizcarra ha rechazado los cargos y sostiene que la acusación fiscal carece de sustento. La Fiscalía ha solicitado una pena de 15 años de prisión.
El exmandatario anticipó que apelará a un instancia superior si resulta es culpable. Vizcarra, que llegó a la presidencia de Perú en 2018 tras la renuncia de Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, aduce que es víctima de una “persecución política”.

After yesterday’s sale of $69BN in 2Y notes, which came smack in the middle of market expectations with metrics that were just about average, moments ago the US Treasury sold $70BN in 5Y notes at a high yield of 3.562%, down from 3.625% last month and the lowest since last September when the Fed launched its current rate cut cycle; the auction tailed the When Issued 3.557% by 0.5bps, and was the 5th tailing 5Y auction of the past 6.
The bid to cover was 2.41, better than last month’s 2.38 and the highest since April, although for a metric that has a 5bps range this is hardly a huge achievement: as shown in the chart below, the BtC has moved in a 3bps range around 2.40 for the past 3 years!
The internals were less impressive, with Indirects (i.e. foreign buyers) sliding to 61.35% from 66.84% and below the recent average of 64.7%. And with Directs rising to 27.6% from 23.9%, Dealers were left with 11.0% of the allocation, up from 9.3% last month but below the 10.4% recent average.
In summary, it was another mediocre auction although with yields sliding across the curve after the Hassett report (which may or may not be a trial balloon), it appears that nobody noticed as the dovish euphoria swept across markets to contain the early selling and boost buying across all asset classes.

Portage shifts dates on 2026-27 school calendar
The Portage Township School Board revised the 2026-27 school calendar just a week after approving it.
The change sets the parent-teacher conference date to Nov. 2 instead of in October.
Superintendent Amanda Alaniz told the board Monday that teachers requested the November date. It precedes an e-learning day Nov. 3, when the general election is held.
In addition, the graduation date is Thursday, June 3, with a rain date of June 4. Last week’s version had graduation on June 4.
The new calendar has students start Wednesday, Aug. 12, after the teachers have two days to prepare and go through staff orientation.
The first semester ends Dec. 18, just before the holiday break of Dec. 21 to Jan. 5. Teachers report Jan. 4 to work on record-keeping.
Spring break is March 22-26. The last day of school is Thursday, May 27.
In other business, Alaniz told the board medical insurance premiums are up 8% next year, following a 2% increase this year. The benefits committee spoke about other school districts and their experiences. The 8% increase is manageable, Alaniz said.
The district received a $37,500 grant through the Indiana Department of Education for STEM lessons using robots. Every general education elementary teacher will be directly involved, Alaniz said.
Fifth-grade teachers will get training, too, Portage Association of Teachers representative Dessa Kelley added, because the grant application was made before the decision to turn Fegely Middle School into an intermediate school next year, housing grades 5 and 6.

ByHeart baby formula from all lots may be contaminated with botulism bacteria, tests show
Tests of ByHeart infant formula tied to a botulism outbreak that has sickened dozens of babies showed that all of the company’s products may have been contaminated.
Laboratory tests of 36 samples of formula from three different lots showed that five samples contained the type of bacteria that can lead to the rare and potentially deadly illness, the company said Monday on its website.
“Based on these results, we cannot rule out the risk that all ByHeart formula across all product lots may have been contaminated,” the company wrote.
At least 31 babies in 15 states who consumed ByHeart formula have been sickened in the outbreak that began in August, according to federal and state health officials. In addition, other infants who drank ByHeart formula were treated for botulism in earlier months, as far back as November 2024, although they are not counted in the outbreak, officials said.
Clostridium botulinum type A, the type of bacteria detected, can be unevenly distributed in powdered formula. Not all babies who ingest it will become ill, though all infants under age 1 are at risk, medical experts said.
ByHeart recalled all of its formula nationwide on Nov. 11. However, some product has remained on store shelves despite the recall, according to state officials and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Parents and caregivers should stop feeding the formula to babies immediately and monitor the children for symptoms, which can take up to 30 days to appear.
Infant botulism occurs when babies ingest spores that germinate in their intestine and produce a toxin. Symptoms include constipation, difficulty sucking or feeding, drooping eyelids, flat facial expression and weakness in the arms, legs and head. The illness is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
At least 107 babies nationwide have been treated for botulism with an IV medication known as BabyBIG since Aug. 1, health officials said. In a typical year, less than 200 infants are treated for the illness.
To report an illness tied to the outbreak, contact an FDA consumer complaint coordinator or fill out an online MedWatch form.
Consumers who bought ByHeart on the company’s website on or after Aug. 1 can receive a full refund, an expansion of its previous policy, the company said.

Lithium prices have awakened from a multi-year bust in the second half of this year, with Chinese lithium carbonate prices jumping from $6,000 a ton to $11,000 a ton, driven by what Goldman analysts describe as “temporary Chinese supply cuts” and “strong energy-storage-system (ESS) demand.“
For some context, lithium markets flipped dramatically from the 2020 to 2022 “white-gold supercycle” hype to a two-year bust cycle as supply collided with much softer-than-expected worldwide EV demand growth.
With the EV adoption curve stalled and consumers balked at record-high new-car prices amid high interest rates, lithium prices have been on the rise due to a major surprise: tightening near-term supply and rising ESS demand.
“This leads us to delay the timing of a price correction we still expect to the latter half of 2026. We maintain our view that supply delays will be required by 2027 to rebalance the market,” Goldman analysts led by Lavinia Forcellese wrote in a note.
Forcellese noted that the core driver in higher prices is stronger-than-expected ESS demand, which has significantly reduced available inventory.

Married College of DuPage professors help man Butterball turkey hotline in Naperville
Michael Maddox has a simple job: Save turkeys and relationships, one phone call at a time.
Or at least, that’s what he and his wife Susan like to jokingly tell each other.
The pair are among more than 50 people who spend their time during the holiday season answering questions about everything from thawing to brining to spatchcocking turkeys. They are joined by a team of culinary and food science experts at the Naperville-based Butterball Turkey Talk-Line, a hotline designed to help people make the best turkey possible for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Launched in 1981, Butterball’s hotline was started as a way to help make the task of preparing the Thanksgiving bird a little less intimidating. In its first year, Butterball only had just six experts answering the phone — and received more than 11,000 phone calls.
The calls have been rolling in ever since, with thousands of people seeking help from across the U.S. and Canada for advice on how to make the best turkey for the holiday season.
“Butterball does a holiday annual report every year,” Maddox said. “We learned from our report that 5% of the hosts share that they would rather stand in line at the DMV to get the Real ID than to host Thanksgiving.”

Maddox, an assistant professor at the College of DuPage’s Culinary Arts program, joined Butterball’s hotline team in 2021.
“My wife was actually here first,” Maddox said. “She was here the year before me, and told me how much fun she was (having) making people happy, giving them confidence with cooking and prepping tips and things like that.”
His wife, who is an adjunct instructor at the COD’s Culinary Arts program, is ultimately the person who inspired him to join. Now, the pair sit next to each other at the call center in Naperville, where they occasionally give each other tips for handling customer questions, pass each other notes and, yes, even hold hands.
It is getting to work with his wife, and giving confidence to strangers in cooking their turkeys, that brings him back to the hotline each year, Maddox said.
Joining the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line is no small feat. Everyone who is part of the team must have some kind of degree in food. Beyond that, training for the hotline begins in October and every person, no matter if it’s their first year or 10th, goes through the training before the service launches for the season.

“We know our industry, but we need to understand the Butterball (product) and things we don’t think about that often,” Maddox said. “So that training is wonderful. … For me, it was good to have a little more background (and) foundational information on how to grill a turkey, how to smoke a turkey — a lot of people have electric roasters, how to utilize that — cooking in a bag, right?”
Phone calls in the beginning of November are usually centered around purchasing the turkey and all relevant products, including how much to buy and how far in advance. As the season continues, the questions tend to be more about the cooking process itself, such as brining, smoking or curing the turkey. The hotline is available through Dec. 24, with expanded hours on Thanksgiving.
Calls typically average five to seven minutes, Maddox said. The longest call he’s been on with one person was about 20 minutes. There are a handful of calls that have stayed with him, he said.
One time, he talked a man through opening the turkey package all the way through putting it in the oven. It was memorable because the man was so grateful, he said.
Then there was the man from the Pacific Northwest who called for help and, on an unrelated note, told Maddox about the year he bought a few Butterball turkeys that wouldn’t fit in the fridge. He put them out in the snowbank in the hope that they’d stay cold but ultimately didn’t find them until the snow melted the following spring.
But his favorite is the conversation with the husband-and-wife that took a turn.
“We have a nice conversation and I’m explaining a few things,” Maddox said. “(The wife) was in the kitchen and all of a sudden it got quiet, and she was whispering. I said, ‘Is everything all right?’ She goes, ‘No, my mother-in-law and father-in-law just got here. I’m hiding in the closet because I don’t want them to know I’m calling you for information.’”

The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 24-26. On Thanksgiving day, the hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on the Friday after Thanksgiving, you can call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The hotline will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 1-5, 8-12 and 15-19. From Dec. 20-21, the hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Dec. 22 and 23, you can call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On the final day, Dec. 24, the line is available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
