These Are America’s Most (And Least) Affordable Cities

These Are America’s Most (And Least) Affordable Cities

Today, Tupelo, MS is the nation’s most affordable city, where your dollar can stretch 21% further than the U.S. average.

Similarly, several Southern cities have the lowest cost of living in the country, typically seeing smaller populations and more affordable housing. In contrast, New York and California continue to rank among the most expensive places to live.

This graphic, via Visual Capitalist’s Dorothy Neufeld, shows the U.S. cities with the lowest and highest cost of living, based on data from the Council for Community and Economic Research.

Where Are America’s Affordable Cities?

Below, we rank cities by their cost of living index, which measured 61 items in Q2 2025:

Oklahoma stands out for affordability, with three of the nation’s 10 most affordable cities. Texas and Kansas follow closely, each with two.

In Oklahoma City, the median home sale price sits at $225,167, and more than half of homes sold in August went for less than the list price. Down south, McAllen, Texas saw the third-lowest grocery costs in the country.

At the other end of the spectrum, living costs in Manhattan are more than twice the national average—72% higher than even San Francisco. Neighboring boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens also rank among the least affordable in the U.S., driven by an influx of Manhattan buyers during the pandemic.

Honolulu, meanwhile, takes the lead for grocery expenses, with prices more than 32% above the U.S. average, and 13% higher than in Manhattan.

Steve Millar’s 3 high school football games to watch in the Southland and state final predictions

Brother Rice, St. Rita, Providence and Mount Carmel will play in Saturday’s state championship games.

Brother Rice (12-1) vs. St. Rita (9-4)

Kickoff: 4 p.m. Saturday at Hancock Stadium, Normal.

Matchup breakdown: The South Side rivals meet with the Class 7A state title on the line.

It’s a rematch of a Week 3 game, which Brother Rice won 28-10. But St. Rita was missing senior quarterback Steven Armbruster and senior receiver Walter Jones in that game.

Armbruster has thrown for 1,556 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Jones is his top receiver with 681 yards and five TDs. The Mustangs have been rolling offensively of late, scoring 110 points over their last two games.

Senior linebacker Owen Lynch is the defensive leader for St. Rita and sophomore linebacker Jack Schapendonk has been a major playmaker in the postseason.

The Mustangs are looking to win the program’s third state championship and first since 2006.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, are searching for their second state title and first since 1981.

Brother Rice has rolled through the playoffs, scoring over 40 points in all four games and winning each by at least 24 points.

Senior quarterback CJ Gray, an Army recruit, has thrown 22 TD passes and run for 12 more. Senior running back Jaylin Green is the team’s top rusher with 977 yards and 15 TDs, while his twin brother, Jovan, leads the Crusaders in receiving with 525 yards and six TDs.

Junior lineman Brayden Parks, who has 54 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks, was named the Catholic League Blue’s defensive player of the year.

X-factor: Saul Ruiz, St. Rita, senior, kicker/punter.

Steve Millar’s prediction: Brother Rice.

Providence (10-3) vs. Wheaton St. Francis (10-3)

Kickoff: 10 a.m. Saturday at Hancock Stadium, Normal.

Matchup breakdown: This Class 5A championship game is another rematch from the regular season. St. Francis beat Providence 47-35 in Week 5.

The Celtics hope the maturation of their young players over the last two months can help them turn the tide.

A veteran-laden offensive line has paved the way for junior running back Broden Mackert, who has piled up 1,610 yards and 22 TDs. Sophomore Brayden McKay has added 739 yards and 11 TDs.

Senior Xavier Coleman — a Western Illinois recruit — and junior Curtis Stubbs are the top receivers for sophomore quarterback Dominic Vita. Senior linebacker Declan Dircks leads the defense with 121 tackles.

Providence is looking for the program’s 11th championship and first since 2014.

St. Francis is trying to win its second title after winning it all in 2008.

Senior receiver Dario Milivojevic, a Southern Illinois recruit, leads the Spartans with 944 yards and 14 TDs.

Snow in the forecast could be an advantage for the run-heavy Celtics over the pass-leaning Spartans.

X-factor: Jaxson Hutton, Providence, freshman, defensive lineman.

Steve Millar’s prediction: Wheaton St. Francis.

Providence’s Broden Mackert (24) breaks free from the defense against Oak Forest during a Class 5A state semifinal game in New Lenox on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025. (Jeremy Toney / Daily Southtown)

Mount Carmel (13-0) vs. Oswego (11-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Saturday at Hancock Stadium, Normal.

Matchup breakdown: After winning three straight Class 7A state championships, Mount Carmel looks to prevail in 8A to make it a four-peat.

The Caravan is also looking to add to their state record with the program’s 17th state title.

After slipping past Loyola 21-17 in the first round, Mount Carmel has put up over 40 points in each of its last three games, winning them all by at least 19.

Mount Carmel’s Quentin Burrell (4) scores on a catch-and-run play against Fremd during a Class 8A state semifinal game in Chicago on Nov. 22, 2025. (Gary Middendorf / Daily Southtown)

Senior quarterback Emmett Dowling, the Lawless Award winner for Catholic League Blue MVP, has thrown for 3,588 yards and 44 TDs and run for 468 and 10 TDs.

Junior running back Nathan Samuels has gone for 665 yards and 10 TDs, while junior receiver Quentin Burrell has piled up 1,093 yards and 14 TDs on 65 catches. Junior linebacker Roman Igwebuike leads the defense with 104 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.

Oswego, looking for the program’s third state championship and first since 2003, is allowing just 10 points a game. Senior receiver/defensive back Mariano Velasco has nine TD catches and six interceptions.

X-factor: Marshaun Thornton, Mount Carmel, sophomore, receiver/kick returner.

Steve Millar’s prediction: Mount Carmel.

CAIR Sues Texas Over Terrorist Organization Designation

CAIR Sues Texas Over Terrorist Organization Designation

Authored by Matthew Vadum via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after he designated the controversial Muslim advocacy group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Transnational Criminal Organization.

Gov. Greg Abbott speaks during a news conference in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 15, 2025. Brandon Bell/Getty Images

CAIR Litigation Director and General Counsel Lena Masri said in a statement that the group filed the lawsuit on Nov. 20 to defend itself.

No civil rights organizations are safe if a governor can baselessly and unilaterally declare any of them terrorist groups, ban them from buying land, and threaten them with closure,” she said.

In a Nov. 18 proclamation, Abbott also assigned the same designations to the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization created almost a century ago.

Although the Muslim Brotherhood, which has branches all over the world, says it has renounced violence and now aims to establish Islamic rule through elections and other peaceful means, the proclamation said the Muslim Brotherhood “provides support to localized branches in countries and territories throughout the world, including groups that conduct terrorism internationally.”

The proclamation describes CAIR as a Muslim Brotherhood “successor organization,” and notes that the FBI has described CAIR as a “front group” for “Hamas and its support network” in the United States.

The new state-level designations empower the Texas attorney general, currently Ken Paxton, to sue to shutter both groups and block them, as well as their affiliates, from acquiring land in Texas, the Republican governor said. The organizations were designated under the Texas Penal and Property Codes, according to the proclamation.

The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have long made their goals clear: to forcibly impose Sharia law and establish Islam’s ‘mastership of the world,’” Abbott said in a statement.

“The actions taken by the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support terrorism across the globe and subvert our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable,” he said.

After the lawsuit was filed, President Donald Trump said on Nov. 23 that he was planning to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, a move that he has considered since his first term.

On Nov. 24, Trump signed an executive order to begin the process of designating “certain chapters or other subdivisions” of the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorist entities under federal law.

Although neither CAIR nor the Muslim Brotherhood had to date been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the president, the State Department has designated specific branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorist entities, according to the proclamation.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been banned or labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization in several countries, among them Austria, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

Under U.S. law, a Foreign Terrorist Organization is a foreign organization that the federal government recognizes as engaging in or having the capability of engaging in terrorism that threatens U.S. national security. U.S. law forbids persons in the United States from providing material support to such a designated organization and requires U.S. financial institutions to report funds in the organization’s possession to the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Treasury Department.

A Specially Designated Global Terrorist is a person or entity that the State Department or the Treasury Department has designated as a terrorist. The person or entity has been deemed to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism “that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.” The designation allows the federal government to direct U.S. financial institutions to block the assets of the person or entity.

The Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin chapters of CAIR filed the new lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, calling Abbott’s proclamation “defamatory.”

The group alleged in its complaint that the governor is attempting “to punish the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization simply because [he] disagrees with its views.”

Abbott allegedly violated the First Amendment by issuing the proclamation, which “chills Plaintiffs’ freedom of speech and freedom of association, and retaliates against Plaintiffs for their exercise of their rights,” the complaint stated.

The group also stated that Abbott’s statement that it functions as a “front group” for Hamas is “inflammatory” and has no basis in fact.

The Epoch Times reached out for comment to the governor’s office and the Muslim Brotherhood. No replies were received by publication time.

Aldgra Fredly and Jacob Burg contributed to this report.

Turkeys thriving in Illinois thanks to rocket nets, otters: ‘One of the greatest wildlife management success stories’

For Lake County residents living near forest preserves or other natural spaces, chances are they’ve spotted a flock of wild turkeys wandering around.

While they are as American as apple pie and inseparably intertwined with the Thanksgiving holiday, the famous fowls once almost disappeared from the region. Their resurgence, thanks to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), is still lauded decades later as a shining example of native species reintroduction.

As state officials explain, it’s a story of decades of arduous work, multi-state collaboration, rocket-propelled nets and river otters.

Luke Garver, wild turkey project manager for the IDNR, explained the history of the turkey reintroduction program.

Leading up to the 20th century, hundreds of years of habitat loss to agriculture and unregulated hunting decimated turkey populations in the region. Illinois’ turkey population was completely killed off, a type of local extinction known as “extirpation.”

“People had the idea that these natural resources would last forever,” Garver said.

A wild turkey in tall grasses in Illinois. An Illinois Department of Natural Resources official told the story of how rocket-propelled nets and otters helped bring the bird back to the state. (Illinois Department of Natural Resources)

But attitudes shifted in the 20th century, when it became clear there were “no turkeys left in the whole state.”

In the 1950s, the IDNR — then known as the Illinois Department of Conservation — was “hot off the heels” of a successful white-tailed deer reintroduction program, driven in part by one Jack Calhoun, an early forest biologist in Illinois, Garver said.

Attempts at turkey reintroduction began using pen-raised birds that were crosses between wild and domestic breeds. But after they were released into the wild, they proved unsuccessful. The turkeys weren’t fit for survival and didn’t reproduce. The effort was “pretty much a wash,” according to Garver.

Then, in the late 1950s, a new piece of technology was introduced to wildlife restoration that changed the game — the rocket-propelled net.

As the name implies, an explosive charge is put into a small iron rocket, which is attached to a large net and shot over wildlife. Other netting techniques, such as dropping it from above on unsuspecting birds, are just not as effective with the Eastern subspecies of turkey, Garver said, which are especially careful birds.

“Turkeys are a very wary animal,” he said.

It was a reliable way to capture wild birds, Garver said, which could then be moved from areas where populations were abundant to areas where they were nonexistent, like Illinois.

In 1959, Illinois set up an agreement with several other states in the region — Arkansas, Mississippi and West Virginia — to take their wild turkey populations and reintroduce them to Illinois.

However, the federal Lacey Act made it illegal to buy and sell wild animals, Garver said, and a workaround was needed. At the time, while Illinois needed turkeys, it had plenty of river otters, something the other states needed.

“We were flush with river otters,” he said. “Those states were looking to do a restoration of river otters. They said, ‘Hey, let’s trade.’”

Both the explosion-powered nets and native animal trades, while common back then, are less utilised today, Garver said, because of various safety and red-tape restrictions. Nets are now air-launched, he noted.

“It’s not quite as fast or as powerful as a rocket-propelled net, but we don’t have to handle explosives,” he said. “We’re relying on graduate students and technicians who are young people. If we can keep them out of harm’s way, we try to do that.”

Illinois’ reintroduction efforts began in the southern portion of the state, which had the regions of mature timber once believed to be necessary for turkey populations. But a later study has revealed they thrive in areas with a mix of open land and woodland, Garver said, which can be found throughout the state.

Efforts continued throughout the ’60s and ’70s, and for Northern Illinois in the early 1990s and 2000s. Today, turkeys can be found across the state and broader region once again, and Garver said he looks back on the program as part of the IDNR’s “golden era.”

“It was really successful,” he said. “It’s pretty remarkable how well these birds do when they’re given good habitat.”

John Burk, district biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation, called it “one of the greatest wildlife management success stories in modern times.”

Turkey populations can vary over the years due to various factors, and both Garver and Burk said native populations often skyrocket after reintroduction before levelling out. But, generally, Illinois’ numbers are good, and Garver said he hopes they’ve approached an equilibrium.

Garver couldn’t give exact turkey numbers for Illinois, but said officials keep an eye on population trends through yearly public surveys — where residents are asked to report any turkey sightings during the summer months — as well as through hunting statistics.

Hunters are the  “heroes of conservation,” Burk argued, helping fund conservation efforts through hunting licenses and taxes. An avid outdoorsman himself, he encouraged people to enjoy what he called one of his favorite wildlife species, whether by taking photos or hunting.

Looking at a map of release sites between 1959 and 2002, Garver expressed admiration at the amount of “hard and arduous work” the reintroduction required. With the IDNR marking 100 years in 2025, he reflected on its work today, balancing both the protection of natural resources like wild animals with the “social side,” ensuring that the general public can enjoy those resources, such as through hunting.

“I like to think if I could have a conversation with our predecessors a hundred years ago, they’d be proud of us,” Garver said.

Calumet Township readies for increasing food assistance

Calumet Township hasn’t seen a drastic increase in the number of people it’s been feeding, but when it does, they’re working to be ready.

Around 120 cars lined up in the lot across the street from the Multipurpose Center before 6 a.m. November 20 to take part in the Calumet Township Trustee’s second food giveaway for November. Volunteers gave away non-perishable items and detergent products earlier in the month; this time, recipients would get the non-perishables that every house needs for their Thanksgiving feasts, Trustee Tai Adkins said.

What wasn’t given out on Nov. 20 was held over for an extra giveaway Tuesday morning, she said.

“This time, the items were for a holistic meal, and we ensured we brought enough,” she said. “We’ve been doing these twice a month since summer, and serve at least 120 households. That equates to about 1,600 pounds of food each time.

“What we can do realistically, we’re going to do.”

LaJuan Clemons, the township’s coordinator, said they’ve been working on building up the program to be more than just a pantry. To do that, they’re going to need to get some freezers and other infrastructure.

Calumet Township Trustee Tai Adkins, right, delivers a pep talk before a food distribution on November 20, 2025. Fifteen or so volunteers gave out food to some 120 families. (Michelle L. Quinn/Post-Tribune)

“Once we get that, it’s a game-changer,” Clemons said. “We’d like a whole grocery line with meat and fresh produce, not just shelf-stable items. But the plan is in place.”

Terrell Heath, of Gary, said he was asked to volunteer at the distribution, and it was a new experience for him. He said once all the volunteers arrived, they were able to get things set up in about 20 minutes.

“It’s kind of cool,” he said as he put food bags on a rolling cart.

America’s Largest Teachers Union Is Doubling Down On Radical Left Ideology

America’s Largest Teachers Union Is Doubling Down On Radical Left Ideology

Recently obtained internal documents from the National Education Association, the largest teachers union in the US, focus on training educators to become far-left activists in support of spreading woke propaganda to their students.

According to information gathered by a conservative non-profit called Defending Education, the NEA’s upcoming training at an undisclosed location this December doesn’t focus on academics, but on attacking Republicans as “racist and transphobic,” pushing race-class-gender narratives, and promoting gender-transition guides for staff.

The training is targeted for union staff and teams as part of the NEA UniServ and Organizing Training Program 2025–2026.

The goals of the session include, but are not limited to, “dismantling systems of privilege and oppression as it relates to LGBTQ+ educators and students” and “deepening skills and strategies to confront implicit bias, micro-aggressions and stereotypes.”

Republicans are characterized as using an “arsenal of racist dog whistles,’ according to training materials. Participants are instructed how to evoke a “Race Class Gender Narrative” to push back.

“Over the last ten years, Republicans in state legislatures have increasingly turned to anti-transgender rhetoric and legislation as a powerful complement to their arsenal of racist dog whistles used to whip up fear and consolidate power…they have paired these attacks with fear-mongering about Critical Race Theory, mobilizing their base with a potent mix of racist and transphobic tropes.”

The documents focus heavily on issues like “structural oppression” and transgender propaganda with an emphasis on defending the medical transitioning of children.  Teachers are encouraged to use gender fluid language (like neutral pronouns) with students while avoiding scrutiny from parents and administrators.

Teacher’s unions have consistently acted as a root source for woke indoctrination, feeding talking points and activist strategies to leftist teachers who then operate as grooming agents rather than academic educators.  As Florida Governor Ron DeSantis notes on X:

“The radical partisanship of these teacher unions has been a major contributor to education decline in the US.  They see the K-12 school system as as a political means for adults to further their agenda.  This is why the unions fought so hard to close schools during COVID; it was never about the kids.”

“The NEA is the largest teachers’ union in the country, and they have decided to vilify half the country in an upcoming training,” said Erika Sanzi, senior director of communications for Defending Education.  “As far as they are concerned, the only reasons anyone could oppose their preferred ideologies are racism and transphobia and they name Republicans as villains, in writing!”

Sanzi added:

“Their federal charter was granted because they promised to ‘elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching; and to promote the cause of education in the United States…Seeing as their leadership—and by extension, the organization itself—has morphed into a far-left insane asylum that is actively destroying the cause of education, that charter is no longer defensible…”

Leftist activism within the education system is perhaps one of the greatest existential crises in America’s recent history.  Children are brainwashed by teachers to believe in deconstruction ideology; to hate western civilization, to embrace moral relativism, to ignore biological facts and adopt mentally unhinged sexual theories.

Since progressives are increasingly refusing to have their own children and build their own families, the only way they can carry on their doctrine to the next generation is to poison the minds of other people’s children.  Teachers unions have played an integral role in this agenda.
