Park District, police collecting pet-related donations: ‘We have a lot of animal lovers in Waukegan’
As the price of pet food accelerates along with the cost of everyday grocery items, a holiday partnership between the Waukegan Park District and the Waukegan Police Department’s Animal Control Unit aims to help ease the burden for local families.
Each year, the Park District collects an abundance of pet food and supplies, which are donated to the animal control unit to care for dogs and cats and to provide pet owners with food or blankets they might not otherwise be able to afford.
“If a family loves their children and loves their pets, I will help them feed their pets,” Susan Elliott, the supervisor of the animal control unit, said.
The Waukegan Park District’s 15th annual Food for Paws Holiday Pet Food Drive is currently underway and ends Dec. 5 at the Field House Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Center in Waukegan to provide food and supplies for dogs and cats in need. It started on Nov. 17.
Julia Sanchez, a recreation supervisor with the Park District, said people can bring food or supplies to the field house between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. weekdays, as well as between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends.
Sanchez said she is noticing more donations this year than in the past two years, in which she has overseen the program. Along with the food, a lot of people have donated dog or cat blankets.
“I saw 30 bags of dog or cat food when I looked today,” she said. “There are a lot of individual cans, too. There are five garbage bags full of blankets. We have a lot of animal lovers in Waukegan, and they are showing their support.”
Sanchez said the food and supplies are collected to benefit Waukegan Animals Getting Saved (WAGS) which is the not-for-profit organization created to benefit the police department’s animal control unit.
Along with dog and cat food — any variety is welcome — Sanchez said eats for puppies or kittens are also requested, as well as blankets, towels, food bowls, dog collars, leashes, pet carriers, toys like chews or rawhides, medicine, first-aid supplies and gift cards for any of the requested needs.
George Bridges Jr., the president of the Park District’s Board of Commissioners, said the district looks for a variety of ways to help the community. People, as well as their pets, need assistance and this is an opportunity to help during the holiday season.
“This is a way to help our pets and their owners,” Bridges said.
Using some of the food and supplies for animals housed at the city’s no-kill shelter, Elliott said some of it goes to families in Waukegan who are not finding it easy to care for their pets. She wants them to remain where they are going to be loved and receive good care.
“I find 20 families a year to help around Christmastime who need help taking care of their pets,” she said. “WAGS helps me find the families. This is not for everybody. It’s for families who truly need it.”

Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service warned earlier the same day as Bloomberg’s report that the Brits are hellbent on discrediting Trump in order to undermine his latest peace efforts for resolving the conflict from which they profit.
Bloomberg shared what it claimed to be the transcripts of calls between Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin’s top foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov as well as between Ushakov and Putin’s other advisor Kirill Dmitriev about the Ukrainian peace process. The gist of the Witkoff-Ushakov call was Witkoff’s proposal to have Putin suggest a Gaza-like 20-point peace deal for Ukraine during an upcoming call with Trump while the Ushakov-Dmitriev one implied that the leaked draft was Russian-influenced.
Ushakov declined to comment on his talks with Witkoff but said that “Somebody tapped, somebody leaked, but not us” whereas Dmitriev flat-out described his purported call with Ushakov as “fake”. For his part, Trump defended Witkoff’s alleged “coaching” of Ushakov on how Putin should deal with him by reminding everyone “That’s what a dealmaker does. You got to say, ‘Look, they want this – you got to convince them with this.’ That’s a very standard form of negotiations.”
As regards the possibility that the draft framework was Russian-influenced, the notion of which has been pushed by the legacy media to discredit the proposed mutual compromises therein, that was already debunked. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as National Security Advisor, said that “The peace proposal was authored by the U.S. It is offered as a strong framework for ongoing negotiations It is based on input from the Russian side. But it is also based on previous and ongoing input from Ukraine.”
Therefore, neither transcript is scandalous even if their contents were accurately reported, yet the question arises of who might have tapped and leaked these calls. Intriguingly, earlier the same day that Bloomberg later published their report, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service warned that the UK “aims to undermine Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict by discrediting him.” Readers will recall the UK’s role in Russiagate, which they conspired with the CIA, FBI, and the Clinton camp to cook up to against him.
Seeing as how they can no longer collude in this way with their three prior conspirators, the UK might therefore have resorted to leaking those two calls with Ushakov that they might have tapped (possibly among many others) as a last-ditch attempt to discredit the latest unprecedented progress towards peace. This provocation might also have been meant to make Trump panic and fire Witkoff out of fear of another Russiagate 2.0 investigation if this scandal helps the Democrats flip Congress next year.
Firing Witkoff, who’s been central to the recent progress towards peace, could ruin the process right at its most pivotal moment as Zelensky is reportedly considering meeting with Trump very soon to finalize the details of the US-mediated peace framework with Russia. By holding firm, Trump is therefore obstructing efforts to ruin everything that he’s achieved thus far on a Russian-Ukrainian peace deal and consequently revive the Russiagate hoax for helping the Democrats during next year’s midterms.
Accordingly, Bloomberg’ Russian-US leaks can be considered a British intelligence operation for derailing the peace process and perpetuating the conflict from which the UK profits, not to mention meddling in the midterms by giving a fake news-driven boost to the Democrats. Trump revealed that Witkoff will meet with Putin on Monday and might even be joined by his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who helped negotiate the Gaza deal, so more British provocations are expected out of desperation to ruin their talks.

RIO CAUTO, Cuba (AP) — Miles de cubanos siguen sin electricidad, agua o refugio adecuado casi un mes después de que el huracán Melissa azotara la región oriental de la isla, siendo una de las tormentas atlánticas más intensas de la historia.
Durante el día, las familias caminan hacia el río más cercano para llenar contenedores de plástico con agua y por la noche, se juntan para dormir en refugios temporales y tiendas de campaña.
“Lo perdimos todo con la inundación”, dijo Lucía García, de 80 años, “y entonces, hoy estoy aquí, muy deprimida y muy triste”, aseguró.
García vive en una pequeña aula con sus dos hijos, de 45 y 55 años, y su esposo enfermo de 81 años, que permanece postrado en cama.
La escuela donde se alojan en el pueblo de Río Cauto sirve como refugio para 14 familias; ahí se les proporciona comidas diarias a ellas y a otras 25 familias que viven con parientes y vecinos. Los camiones de reparto de agua pasan cada tres o cuatro días.

Goldman said a peace deal may shave off about $5 a barrel from its base-case forecast of $56 next year.
“That would put Brent in 2026 in the low $50s,” analyst Daan Struyven told Bloomberg TV.

Much of Russia’s oil and fuel is subject to heavy Western sanctions, with US restrictions on the two biggest producers kicking in last week. However, China, India and Turkey have been eager buyers of the discounted crude, so the impact on global prices from any lifting of curbs is hard to gauge.
“Minute adjustments between the US, Russia, Ukraine and the EU on proposed peace deals have been carefully digested by the market,” Standard Chartered analysts including Emily Ashford wrote in a note.
“Any positive signs of collaboration or agreement have resulted in short-term sell-offs, while the dialing-back of enthusiasm has bolstered prices.”
Oil has retreated by more than a fifth since the middle of June as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies restored barrels, while producers outside of the group also pumped more. Worldwide crude supply is expected to exceed demand by a record 4 million barrels a day next year, the International Energy Agency forecast this month.

Food distribution effort aims to make for a happy Thanksgiving for residents of public housing in Aurora
Food insecurity – particularly at the holidays – is magnified as family and loved ones look forward to a meal and spending time together.
On Monday, the Aurora Housing Authority held a food distribution effort aimed at helping hundreds of residents of public housing in the city have a fulfilling holiday by giving out more than 500 free Thanksgiving meal boxes, complete with both ready-to-bake turkeys and the usual side dishes.
“I volunteer here and I’m going to get a turkey and other things for our meal,” Saul Fultz of Aurora said as he helped distribute boxes of food during the effort Monday outside his residence at Maple Terrace Apartments. “Getting this food is going to have a great impact as far as feeding people this week is concerned and making the holiday more joyous and bringing our family together.”
The meal boxes were given out at the Aurora Housing Authority’s five public housing communities – Southwind Housing Complex, Maple Terrace Apartments, Indian Trail, Centennial House Apartments and 1449 Senior Estates.
A press release about the food distribution Monday said the effort is important now more than ever because the federal government shutdown which ended recently “disrupted SNAP benefits statewide.”
“Many AHA residents, including young children, working parents, individuals with disabilities and seniors, did not receive their scheduled benefits,” the release said. “Some still have not received their full November allotment, leaving many unable to purchase food for their Thanksgiving meal.”
Dalmarie Arroyo, who serves as the property manager for Maple Terrace, spoke before the food distribution began and said “with the SNAP issues, this is one of the more heightened seasons I’ve seen here as far as the need for food goes.”

Arroyo said the distribution of the Thanksgiving meal boxes is definitely needed.
“Residents here know about this and that they are going to get help,” Arroyo said. “I already have a list of tenants that can’t make it here and they’ve asked me to hold their food for them.”
Derrick Anderson said he has lived at Maple Terrace for eight years and that “I have been receiving the food boxes for Thanksgiving since I’ve been here.”
“I’ll have anywhere from seven to 10 people here Thursday,” he said while waiting in line Monday. “Getting this is a blessing. I count on it each year and am very thankful.”
Derrick Jones said he has lived almost nine years at the property and plans on seeing seven people for dinner on Thanksgiving.
“I always get enough to feed my family from this giveaway,” he said. “I look forward to this day and getting some help.”

As chatter about an AI-driven market bubble grows louder across Wall Street, with nearly half of BofA’s Fund Manager Survey respondents calling the AI/data-center boom a bubble, UBS analysts are out with a note insisting there is plenty more bubble-blowing ahead.
UBS analyst Andrew Garthwaite wrote that his bullish target for the MSCI AC World is 1,090 by end-2026 (+11%). But he noted that if GenAI delivers even half the productivity surge that late-1990s Tech was believed to produce, the S&P 500 could “easily” justify 7,000.
“We think Gen AI – ‘the steam engine of the mind’ – will increase productivity more than TMT did back in the late 1990s,” Garthwaite told clients.
He continued, “We also now have all 7 preconditions for a bubble that we are not yet in (historically, the P/E at a bubble peak has been 45x-72x on 12-month trailing earnings for 30-43% of global market cap versus Mag 6 today on 33x).”
Garthwaite pointed to a previous analysis in the UBS Global Economics and Strategy Outlook that shows today’s market performance patterns are similar to those in March 1998.
“We also highlight that we believe we are far removed from any of the major catalysts that mark a bubble peak,” he said.
The analyst continued:
We think there is more justification for a bubble (which we are not yet in) to form than any of the many others we have seen owing to the uniquely quick adoption rate of Gen AI and the threat of monetisation of government debt (which would lead to a move from nominal to real assets). We see at least a 35% chance of a bubble fully forming, and that would justify 1090 MSCI AC World.
Other factors that are supportive for equities: i) The well-behaved nature of US wage growth (this allows the Fed to be proactive if necessary); ii) the historical performance of equities when we just miss a bear market (2 years later up 43% on average versus 34.6% so far) or when the Fed cut and there is no recession (up 17% a year later); and iii) it is too early to call an end to AI or Tech+ outperformance. The P/E of Tech+ relative to the market is close to its norm, earnings growth is expected to be better than the market until Q2 27, and earnings revisions are better than the market. There are many other supports such as hyperscalers being able to increase capex by c40% before capex is above 2025 operating cash flow, with ICT investment as a % of GDP still at average levels.
Near term, there is a risk of ongoing consolidation continuing. In early November, UBS Risk Appetite had been at a 5-year high and CTA positioning at an 8-year high. These indicators are normalising but are still above average; however, we would be surprised if the sell-off extended by another 5%.

Indonesia investiga contaminación radiactiva en exportaciones a EEUU y Europa

YAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia ha abierto una investigación criminal sobre la fuente sospechosa de contaminación radiactiva que obligó a retirar exportaciones de camarones y especias a Estados Unidos y zapatillas a Holanda, informaron autoridades el miércoles.
La investigación se centra en una fábrica de procesamiento de metales en el Parque Industrial de Cikande, en la provincia de Banten en la isla de Java. La empresa de fundición, llamada PT Peter Metal Technology, es al parecer de propiedad china, según los investigadores.
“La policía ha iniciado la investigación criminal”, indicó Bara Hasibuan, portavoz de la comisión investigadora.
El descubrimiento de cesio 137 comenzó a principios de este año con un informe inicial presentado por las autoridades holandesas sobre rastros de radiación encontrados en contenedores de envío desde Indonesia. Varias cajas de zapatillas estaban contaminadas, añadió.
En agosto, la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de Estados Unidos (FDA) emitió una alerta advirtiendo a los consumidores que no comieran ciertos camarones congelados importados de PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, una empresa cercana al parque industrial que opera como BMS Foods, después de que se detectara cesio 137 en contenedores de envío enviados a puertos norteamericanos.
Alrededor de 20 fábricas vinculadas al parque industrial de Cikande se vieron afectadas, incluidas instalaciones que procesan camarones y fabrican calzado, según las autoridades. Nueve empleados que trabajaban en el parque industrial tuvieron exposición a cesio-137. Han sido tratados en un hospital gubernamental en Yakarta y todas las instalaciones contaminadas en el área industrial han sido descontaminadas.

La FDA dice que, aunque la exposición repetida a bajas dosis de cesio 137 a largo plazo aumenta los riesgos para la salud, los niveles detectados en los productos indonesios no representaban un riesgo agudo para la salud.
