Aproximadamente 3.000 familias desplazadas huyeron a refugios gubernamentales.

From Oil War To ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’: Trump’s Extraordinary Saudi Pivot

From Oil War To ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’: Trump’s Extraordinary Saudi Pivot

Authored by Simon Watkins via OilPrice.com,

Trump designates Saudi Arabia a “major non-NATO ally,” marking a dramatic turnaround from years of strained relations marked by an oil price war and diplomatic freezes.

In return, Washington expects Saudi Arabia to align more closely with U.S. interests.

The U.S. expects Riyadh to help keep prices within a “Trump Oil Price Range” of roughly $40–80 per barrel.

From the beginning of Donald Trump’s first term in office in 2017 to the start of his second term earlier this year, the relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia shifted between tense and downright hostile.

Those years included an Oil Price War, the de facto Saudi leader labelled a murderer, and all lines of communication between the two sides grinding to a complete halt.

However, as Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) sat next to each other at a black-tie dinner at the White House last week – with the former designating the latter’s country as “a major non-NATO ally” — all this must have seemed a distant past, and as L.P. Hartley put it: “They do things differently there”.

So, how does the future for the world’s top superpower and one of its top hydrocarbons powers look from here?

It is apposite to note here that this is not a meaningless designation from the U.S. for Saudi Arabia. Only 19 other countries — Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand, and Tunisia – have such a standing in Washington’s eyes. Taiwan also has the same de facto designation, but does not officially enjoy the label, given the U.S.’s complicated ‘One China’ policy. Saudi Arabia’s new-found status also brings with it a host of economic and military advantages in its dealings with the U.S. and its allies, according to the State Department. These include eligibility for ‘loans of material, supplies, or equipment for cooperative research, development, testing, or evaluation purposes’, as well as for being a location for the placing of U.S.-owned War Reserve Stockpiles.

Saudi Arabia will also now be able to enter into agreements with the U.S. for its security forces’ training on a bilateral or multilateral basis, will be eligible for the priority delivery of ‘excess defence articles’ (including C-130 Hercules aircraft or frigates, at low or zero cost), and for the purchase of depleted uranium ammunition.

It will also be entitled to enter into agreements with the U.S. Department of Defense for research and development projects on defence equipment and munitions, and to procure explosives detection devices and other counter-terrorism research and development projects, among many other advantages. In short, Saudi Arabia is officially now regarded by the U.S. and its allies – including NATO members – as ‘one of ours’.

That said, this unofficial designation – and the official ‘major non-NATO ally’ counterpart – comes with its own obligations for Saudi Arabia. Beginning from a broad perspective, the Kingdom will be expected to tilt more towards the interests of the U.S. and its allies than those of the China-Russia bloc, regardless of the issue, and regardless of what has gone before. The years of cosying up with China after the devastating financial impact of the 2014-2016 Oil Price War of OPEC members, led by Saudi Arabia, on the U.S. and its allies — analysed in full in my latest book on the new global oil market order – are expected to count for nothing going forward. Nor is the adjunct relationship normalisation deal brokered by China between Saudi Arabia and Iran, as the same highly-placed Washington-based legal source exclusively told OilPrice.com last week. “In any direct conflicts of interest like this, we [the U.S.] expect Saudi to be on our side from now on,” he underlined. A firmer line from Saudi Arabia is expected by the U.S. to be drawn on the issue of the Kingdom’s earlier drift towards the formal economic, political, and security cooperation structures with China and Russia at their centres. This particularly applies to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) which Saudi Arabia joined as a ‘dialogue partner’ in March 2023.

And Saudi Arabia’s continued support for the ongoing expansion of China’s multi-generational power-grab project, ‘The Belt and Road Initiative’ is also expected by Washington to be toned down.

This equally carries through into Saudi Aramco’s dealings with China, which had been characterised by chief executive officer Amin Nasser in the comment: “Ensuring the continuing security of China’s energy needs remains our highest priority – not just for the next five years but for the next 50 and beyond,” as also fully detailed in my latest book.

Instead of its formerly Sino-centric posture, Saudi Arabia is now expected by Washington to adopt an actively positive stance in the rollout of Trump’s broader vision for the Middle East. Just as in his first presidential term, this involves building out ‘relationship normalisation’ deals between key Arab states and the U.S.’s longstanding core ally in the region – Israel. This ‘Abraham Accords’ initiative had seen some success in that first term in office, with notable signatories being the UAE and Bahrain, before Trump’s tenure was cut short by his loss to Joe Biden in November 2020. However, there had been signs from MBS even then that he might look favourably on the Kingdom signing such a deal, albeit at a point after King Salman’s death. Given Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic and mediatory stance during the recent Israeli attacks on Hamas and Iran – themselves a response to the murder, torture and rape of hundreds of Israeli citizens by Hamas on 7 October 2023 – Washington is quietly confident that an ‘Abraham Accord’ by whatever name will be reached between Saudi Arabia and Israel in the near future. Indeed, Saudi Arabia (alongside Qatar – another ‘major non-NATO ally’, and Oman) reportedly relayed messages between Tehran and mediators from the U.S.-Israeli side, helping to shape ceasefire conditions.

The final part of Saudi Arabia’s obligations from the U.S. side will be full cooperation on the oil price.

Specifically, Washington expects active assistance in the oil markets to keep oil prices within the ‘Trump Oil Price Range’, as fully analysed in my latest book on the new global oil market order.

Suffice it to say here, this sits roughly between a Brent price floor of US$40–45 per barrel (pb, the breakeven price plus a bit of profit for the bulk of U.S. shale oil producers) and a ceiling of US$75–80 pb (which ties into historical data showing that a gasoline price of under US$2 per gallon has been most advantageous for U.S. economic growth) – and the range is critical to Trump from an economic and political perspective.

On the former, historical data highlights that every US$10 pb or so change in the price of crude oil results in around a 25-30 cent change in the price of a gallon of gasoline, and for every 1 cent that the average price per gallon of gasoline rises, more than US$1 billion or so per year in consumer spending is lost. On the latter, since 1896, the sitting U.S. president has won re-election 11 times out of 11 if the economy was not in recession within two years of an upcoming election.

However, sitting U.S. presidents who went into a re-election campaign with the economy in recession won only once out of seven occasions.

The same pattern broadly applies to the re-election chances of candidates of any sitting president’s party in U.S. mid-term elections as well. Trump may find a way to run again for President, but even if he does not, his Republican Party will want to optimise their chances for another of their members to be in the top job.

From the Farm: Thanksgiving weekend an annual reminder of Florence Henderson’s passing

The November and December holiday span of 2016 saw a number of legendary and luminary names pass away between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Actor and writer Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, singer George Michael, actor Zsa Zsa Gabor and actor Alan Thicke were among the notables who passed.

The first of the parade of goodbyes began nine years ago on Thanksgiving morning with the passing of Florence Henderson, forever embraced as a pop culture favorite TV mom. She was also a woman of versatile talent that afforded a long career also spanning Broadway, film and countless live performances.

But most of all in my mind, Henderson, who died at age 82, was one of our beloved Hoosier claim-to-fames, born and raised near Dale, Indiana.

I’ve thought about Florence, who I considered a friend, quite often in recent weeks, leading up to the Thanksgiving anniversary of her leaving us.

While watching last Tuesday’s Nov. 25 season finale of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” with my parents, I recalled that it is the series Florence was once a cast member of and how much she loved the show. Her final TV appearance was a flash of the camera and her bright smile in the VIP section of the audience for the 2016 “Dancing with the Stars” season finale on Nov. 21, 2016.

A line of Halloween costume wigs manufactured by Imposta Costumes of Runnemede, New Jersey, in homage to the TV characters from ABC’s family series “The Brady Bunch” included a wig styled as Mrs. Carol Brady, portrayed by the late Florence Henderson. (Philip Potempa/for Post-Tribune)

Our shared circle of famed friends included actor Jim Nabors and Phyllis Diller, both also gone now and a favorite pair of contributors to all four of my published “From the Farm” series of cookbooks.

Phyllis helped me write my original 2004 cookbook, and Nabors helped me write my second “From the Farm” cookbook in 2007, contributing the celebrity foreword and also a special chapter with his own favorite recipes. As I’ve relayed in a previous column, Florence had agreed to do the same honors for my third cookbook installment in 2010 and graciously submitted all of the needed copy and recipes.

However, after a discussion with my publisher, I decided to have fellow Hoosier actress Betsy Palmer, who hailed from our own East Chicago, Indiana, partner with me for my third book, with the promise that Florence (whose delicious recipe for her chocolate brownies is included in the 2007 cookbook) would be included in the next edition, released in 2019. We lost Betsy in May of 2015 at age 88. Both Betsy and Florence shared the distinction of being cast in the early days of NBC’s “Today” show, dubbed “a ‘Today’ Show Girl,” an on-air assistant of sorts appearing in cooking, fashion and homemaking broadcast segments.

During my “Thanksgiving From the Farm” live stage cooking show on Sunday, Nov. 16, I included a recipe segment paying tribute to the memory of Florence. My frequent stage co-star and collaborator, Cara Schmitt of Munster, graciously agreed (much to her surprise) to join me from her audience seat to appear on stage in an “official” “Mrs. Brady” wig (a line now discontinued and a reason why the wig was slightly disheveled) and don an apron for a fun recipe segment.

Columnist Philip Potempa holds back laughter after being joined on stage by personality Cara Schmitt, sporting an apron and “Mrs. Brady Wig,” for a recipe segment saluting the late Florence Henderson during his Nov. 16, 2025, “Thanksgiving From the Farm Cooking Show” at Theatre at the Center in Munster. (Photo courtesy of Eloise Marie Valadez)

Throughout most of her latter career, Florence would return every year to Indianapolis in May to participate in the opening ceremonies of the Indy 500 Race to sing “God Bless America” as a tradition, just as her pal Jim Nabors traditionally crooned “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

Over the years, she did this duty 23 times. Throughout the years I interviewed Henderson and later, I was able to count her as a friend with one of our common bonds being our shared Catholic faith.

Because of her status ranked as one of TV’s “favorite onscreen moms,” a common question posed to Florence in interviews was: “So who do you go to for motherly advice?”

Her answer was the Mother Superior for the Sisters of St. Benedict of the Monastery of Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana. (Rather than being referred to as “Mother Superior,” Sister Barbara Lynn Schmitz’s title is “Prioress” for her convent’s order.)

During the decades, Florence helped this shrinking order of nuns, the same sisters who taught her all throughout her days at St. Bernard’s Elementary School, by assisting with raising funds for the care of the aging nuns in the order.

I spent time with Florence during the Thanksgiving week of 2006 when she headlined a series of three days of concerts with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Nov. 20-22, in downtown Indianapolis at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Florence performed her favorite songs from “South Pacific,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Chicago” and a selection of standards from Rodgers and Hammerstein. At the time, I’d urged our own Northwest Indiana Symphony Maestro Kirk Muspratt and the orchestra board of directors to book Florence to do the same with a Mother’s Day concert at our now erased entertainment oasis, the Star Plaza Theatre.

Alas, the sands in the hourglass slipped through too soon. (During the decades, we did both Shirley Jones and Carol Lawrence as headliners for their own Mother’s Day Weekend concerts with our Northwest Symphony Orchestra.)

Florence loved to cook and published her own cookbooks throughout the years, as well as hosting her own cable television cooking shows. For after Thanksgiving, a departure from leftovers is always a welcome change for appetites, especially serving a dish with just a touch of spicy zip.

Florence created a pasta casserole recipe in 1998 for a promotion she did with celebrity Chef Jacque Pepin, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in a few weeks on Dec. 18. Florence was joined by other noted “TV” moms, like Marion Ross, who is now age 97, of “Happy Days” fame, and “Good Morning America” host and mom of twins Joan Lunden, who is now 75. Under the watchful eye of Chef Pepin, Florence and the gals were tasked to whip up recipes using readily available “cupboard shelf staples” during this March 1998 promotion in downtown New York sponsored by the Canned Food Alliance.

The zest and flavor of Florence’s quick recipe for her meatless Southwest Baked Pasta and Cheese Casserole, hailed as one of her “Lenten menu go-tos,” received the most attention and applause, and Florence beamed from ear to ear.

Columnist Philip Potempa has published four cookbooks and is the director of marketing at Theatre at the Center. He can be reached at philip.m.potempa@powershealth.org or mail your questions: From the Farm, PO Box 68, San Pierre, Ind. 46374.

IHSA postpones 4 football state championship games at Illinois State due to expected winter storm

For the first time in 51 years, the Illinois High School Association has called a timeout for football state championship games.

Due to a winter storm warning that includes the Bloomington-Normal area, the IHSA announced Friday that the championship games in the 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A classes scheduled for Saturday are being postponed. The championship games in 1A, 2A, 4A and 4A on Friday were being played as scheduled.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow, strong winds and hazardous roads are expected. As a result, host Illinois State announced its campus will be closed Saturday.

“The safety of student-athletes, coaches, officials and spectators remains our highest priority,” the IHSA stated in a news release.

The Saturday schedule featured Providence versus Wheaton St. Francis in 5A, East St. Louis versus Fenwick in 6A, Brother Rice versus St. Rita in 7A and Mount Carmel versus Oswego in 8A. The IHSA said it is working with Illinois State leadership to determine a new date for those games. The games will not be played on Sunday.

“The postponement of the IHSA football state finals is unprecedented in the state playoffs’ 51-year history,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said. “All of the competing teams in Class 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A have been alerted that their state championship games will not be played on November 29, but that they will be played in the coming days.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of these schools and communities as we work to determine the best and safest solution to rescheduling these contests and crowning state champions in our four largest classes.”

“Got To Be CIA Front”: Internet Sleuths Scour Web For Clues On DC Afghan Shooter

“Got To Be CIA Front”: Internet Sleuths Scour Web For Clues On DC Afghan Shooter

The ex-CIA-linked Afghan national who killed one National Guard soldier and critically injured another just blocks from the White House has set off alarm bells across the nation and in national security circles.

The attack – likely soon to be designated as terrorism – highlights how nation-killing open borders, reckless Afghan intake policies, and broader migrant inflows from hellish third worlds, combined with the Democratic Party’s suicidal empathy, have worked in unison to flood the country with tens of millions of poorly vetted people.

Former CIA targeting officer Sarah Adams has repeatedly warned about this threat: individuals with prior militant training or hostile intent have flooded the nation through these migrant inbound intake pipelines during the Biden-Harris regime years.

It’s past time @DHSgov stops playing pretend and finally raises the terrorism threat level in this country. We have more than 10,000 Islamist terrorists on our soil, and they cannot keep looking the other way. They don’t get to pad their stats by slapping the terrorist label on…

FBI Director Kash Patel has stated that Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal’s brutal attack in DC earlier this week, which horrified the nation, is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

Patel said agents seized “numerous electronic devices,” including smartphones, iPads, and laptops, all of which are now being analyzed.

FBI agents searched multiple properties in a widening terror probe, including a home in Washington state linked to the suspect.

With federal investigations ongoing and largely being classified, X sleuths have uncovered a trove of information that, while not confirmed, likely sheds more light on Lakanwal.

Not confirmed, but a strong possibility: DataRepublican appears to have found Lakanwal’s job resume, which includes a line stating he worked for the “International Rescue Committee.”

Here’s what other X sleuths found in their investigation that has yet to be confirmed.

The broader threat is clear: America’s immigration system has become an exploitable gateway for bad actors with militant backgrounds or hostile intent – a threat warned about by Trump and America First officials for years – yet Democrats called anyone “racists” and “fascists” for denouncing these nation-killing open borders and poorly vetted migrant intake programs. Now chaos and terror have washed ashore.

President Donald Trump says he wants to ‘permanently pause’ migration to the US from poorer countries

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump says he wants to “permanently pause migration” from poorer nations and is promising to seek to expel millions of immigrants from the United States by revoking their legal status. He is blaming immigrants for problems from crime to housing shortages as part of “social dysfunction” in America and demanding “REVERSE MIGRATION.”

His most severe social media post against immigration since returning to the Oval Office in January came after the shooting Wednesday of two National Guard members who were patrolling the streets of the nation’s capital under his orders. One died and the other is in critical condition.

A 29-year-old Afghan national who worked with the CIA during the Afghanistan War is facing charges. The suspect came to the U.S. as part of a program to resettle those who had helped American troops after U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Trump’s threat to stop immigration would be a serious blow to a nation that has long defined itself as welcoming immigrants.

Since the shooting not far from the White House, administration officials have pledged to reexamine millions of legal immigrants, building on a 10-month campaign to reduce the immigrant population. In a lengthy social media post late Thursday, the Republican president asserted that millions of people born outside the U.S. and now living in the country bore a large share of the blame for America’s societal ills.

“Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “Other than that, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL, except those that hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for — You won’t be here for long!”

Trump was elected on a promise to crack down on illegal migration, and raids and deportations undertaken by his administration have disrupted communities across the country. Construction sites and schools have been frequent targets. The prospect of more deportations could be economically dangerous as America’s foreign-born workers account for nearly 31 million jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The president said on Truth Social that “most” foreign-born U.S. residents “are on welfare, from failed nations, or from prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels” as he blamed them for crime across the country that is predominantly committed by U.S. citizens.

There are roughly 50 million foreign-born residents in the U.S., and multiple studies have found that immigrants are generally less likely to commit crimes than are people who were born in the country.

The perception that immigration breeds crime “continues to falter under the weight of the evidence,” according to a review of academic literature last year in the Annual Review of Criminology.

“With few exceptions, studies conducted at both the aggregate and individual levels demonstrate that high concentrations of immigrants are not associated with increased levels of crime and delinquency across neighborhoods and cities in the United States,” it said.

A study by economists initially released in 2023 found immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated than people born in the U.S. Immigrants have been imprisoned at lower rates for 150 years, the study found, adding to past research undermining Trump’s claims.

Trump seemed to have little interest in a policy debate in his post, which the White House, on its own rapid response social media account, called “one of the most important messages ever released by President Trump.”

He pledged to “terminate” millions of admissions to the country made during the term of his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden. He also wants to end federal benefits and subsidies for those who are not U.S. citizens, denaturalize people “who undermine domestic tranquility” and deport foreign nationals deemed “non-compatible with Western Civilization.”

Trump claimed immigrants from Somalia were “completely taking over the once great State of Minnesota” as he used a dated slur for intellectually disabled people to demean that state’s governor, Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee last year.

On Wednesday night, Trump called for the reinvestigation of all Afghan refugees who had entered under the Biden administration. On Thursday, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Joseph Edlow, said the agency would take additional steps to screen people from 19 “high-risk” countries “to the maximum degree possible.”

Edlow did not name the countries. But in June, the administration banned travel to the U.S. by citizens of 12 countries and restricted access from seven others, citing national security concerns.

The shooting of the two National Guard members appeared to trigger Trump’s anger over immigrants, yet he did not specifically refer to the event in his social media post.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is accused of driving across the country to the District of Columbia and shooting two West Virginia National Guard members, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24. Beckstrom died on Thursday; Wolfe is in critical condition.

The suspect, currently in custody, was also shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Trump was asked by a reporter Thursday if he blamed the shootings on all Afghans who came to the U.S.

“No, but we’ve had a lot of problems with Afghans,” the president said.
