Multiple deaths reported in crash of business jet connected to retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle

A business jet with six people aboard crashed Thursday at a regional airport in North Carolina used by NASCAR teams and Fortune 500 companies, erupting in a large fire and killing multiple people, authorities said.

Flight records show the plane was registered to a company run by retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle.

There were six people on the Cessna C550 that crashed while landing at Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles north of Charlotte, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

“I can confirm there were fatalities,” Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said.

Golfers playing next to the airport were shocked as they witnessed the disaster, even dropping to the ground at the Lakewood Golf Club while the plane was overhead. The ninth hole was covered with debris.

“We were like, ‘Oh, my gosh! That’s way too low,’” said Joshua Green of Mooresville. “It was scary.”

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA were investigating. AccuWeather says there was some drizzle and clouds at the time of the crash.

The plane took off from the airport shortly after 10 a.m. but then returned and was attempting to land there, according to tracking data posted by FlightAware.com.

The plane had planned to fly later from Sarasota, Florida, to Treasure Cay International Airport in the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and then to Statesville by evening, data showed.

Video from WSOC-TV showed first responders rushing onto the runway as flames burned near scattered wreckage from the plane.

The airport’s website states that it offers corporate aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.

Trump Promises New Evidence Showing 2020 Election Fraud

Trump Promises New Evidence Showing 2020 Election Fraud

Authored by Petr Svab via The Epoch Times,

President Donald Trump has in recent interviews repeatedly foreshadowed new revelations about improprieties in the 2020 election. He has suggested the evidence to be both voluminous and clear.

“The election was rigged in 2020. We have all the ammunition, all the stuff, and you’ll see it come out. It’s coming out in truckloads,” Trump said during remarks at the White House Christmas reception this week.

He took particular aim at California, suggesting the state’s system of mailing ballots to all active registered voters is not secure.

“They mail out 38 million ballots, and they come in. Where … do they go and where do they come from?” he said.

He said that because in 2024 he was able to win a number of heavily Hispanic districts in Florida and along the southern portion of Texas, he would also have been able to win the votes of Hispanic communities in California to the point of carrying the state. The fact that he did not, he suggested, indicated improprieties in the election process.

“It’s a rigged election in California, because we would win California by a lot,” he said. “And again, they feel they have the advantage with Hispanic. They don’t, because I won [the] Hispanic vote.”

Trump also promised evidence of 2020 election rigging several days earlier during a Dec. 9 interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns.

“It was a rigged election. Now everyone knows it. It’s going to come out over the next couple of months too. Loud and clear. Because we have all the information there,” Trump said.

The 2020 election, conducted under the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, was marred by allegations of fraud and other illegalities. The Trump campaign attempted to litigate the claims, but was not able to overturn the results in any state as many of the lawsuits were dismissed on procedural grounds.

An FBI investigation brought during the Biden administration and taken over by special counsel Jack Smith resulted in charges against Trump in 2023 over his efforts to challenge the official results of the election, including the appointment of several slates of alternative electors.

The prosecutors in that case filed secret subpoenas directed at more than 400 conservative organizations and individuals, including lawmakers, according to documents provided through whistleblower disclosures to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), which he released in October.

Smith dropped the case after Trump won the 2024 election, citing the inability to prosecute a sitting president.

Before the 2020 election, the FBI suppressed the issuance of intelligence from an informant alleging that the Chinese communist regime shipped tens of thousands of fake drivers licenses to the United States to be used by ineligible voters to cast ballots for Trump’s then-opponent Joe Biden, according to internal FBI communications released in July by Grassley.

The intelligence was reported internally by the Albany field office in September 2020, but FBI headquarters then asked the field office to recall it and collect more information. A field agent did so, but the report was never reissued, with the explanation that it would “contradict” congressional testimony of then-FBI Director Christopher Wray, according to released emails.

In March, Trump issued an executive order tasking the administration with ensuring that states properly check voter eligibility, including citizenship. It also tasked the Department of Justice with collecting voter fraud information from states and focusing voter fraud investigations on those states that refuse to cooperate.

The department is to use “all necessary action” to enforce laws that bar counting ballots received after Election Day.

Since May, the DOJ has been sending letters to states asking for voter registration data with the stated purpose of inspecting voter rolls to make sure they are accurate and up to date.

The department is now suing at least 18 states that have refused to provide the data.

Besides election fraud, the Trump camp has pointed to other issues that affected the 2020 election, such as some states using the pandemic as a justification to change election rules, as well as a letter signed by more than 50 former intelligence officials suggesting inaccurately that revelations from the Hunter Biden laptop were “Russian disinformation.”

Some polling has indicated that a determinative minority of voters might have changed their vote if they had been aware of the laptop story.

That lonesome whistle is already blowing on new rail route

If you think you’re dreaming about ghost trains running at night along the unopened West Lake Corridor route, you might not be dreaming.

On Monday, the South Shore Line began running a two-car train along the new rail line to start testing and conditioning, so bugs can be worked out before passenger service is set to start in March, President and General Manager Michael Noland said Tuesday.

“We’re doing that for the next three days,” he said, running a train at night to limit traffic disruptions.

The start of passenger service was delayed after three of the four transformers along the route were found to be damaged, Noland said. The cause still hasn’t been determined.

But that won’t stop the railroad from testing the new rail line and starting to train employees on it.

Noland said the transformer at the north Hammond station is working, and another transformer has been cobbled together with a variety of parts. A third transformer, a 45-year-old oil-based transformer, is being recommissioned.

“We can do almost everything that is necessary,” he said, with the equipment on hand.

The new route is eight miles long, and the industry likes to have transformers every three miles for reliability, but the existing route has far fewer. Can a single transformer be used to power a train along the entire route? “We do it every day,” Noland said, between Michigan City and South Bend, where there’s a 10-mile stretch of tracks between transformers.

The railroad has begun a 10-year program to renew and supplement substations along the existing line. “I don’t know if we’re ever going to go every three miles,” he said.

What’s worked for 116 years still works, Noland said.

The new system being tested this week is software-based, so it’s a chance to see how close theory comes to practice. Already, a few bugs were noticed Monday, so they can be corrected, he said.

The trains are running in a low power mode, taking longer to pick up speed after leaving a station. “To simply test a two-car train, we can do that with one transformer in north Hammond powering the system,” Noland said.

A train with more cars and fully loaded with passengers would require more power, especially to quickly get to 60 mph after leaving the station.

Noland, who announced his retirement last month and is waiting for his replacement to be hired, said he wants to make sure the new rail route is up and running as soon as possible. Doing testing and training now means when the new transformers are installed it won’t take as long to finish getting everything commissioned and revenue service started.

President Donald Trump signs order that would reclassify marijuana as less dangerous drug

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday that would reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug and open new avenues for medical research, a major shift in federal drug policy that inches closer to what many states have done.

Mayor Brandon Johnson tries to beat state to taxing hemp with plan that adds age limit

The switch would move marijuana away from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. Cannabis would instead be a Schedule III substance, like ketamine and some anabolic steroids.

Reclassification by the Drug Enforcement Administration would not make it legal for recreational use by adults nationwide, but it could change how the drug is regulated and reduce a hefty tax burden on the cannabis industry.

Similarly, the Justice Department under Trump’s Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, proposed reclassifying marijuana to a Schedule III substance. Unlike Biden, Trump did not have open encouragement from across his party for the move. Some Republicans have spoken out in opposition to any changes and urged Trump to maintain current standards.

Such a switch typically requires an arduous process, including a public comment period that has drawn tens of thousands of reactions from across the U.S. The DEA was still in the review process when Trump took office in January. Trump’s order is expected to speed the process along, though it was not immediately clear how long it might take.

Many states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults or allow it for medical purposes. But U.S. laws have remained stricter, potentially leaving people subject to federal prosecution.

Polling from Gallup shows more Americans back a less restrictive approach: Support for marijuana legalization has grown significantly, from just 36% support in 2005 to 68% last year.

Trump’s order also calls for expanded research and access to CBD, a legal and increasingly popular hemp-derived product whose benefits are debated by experts.

More than 20 Republican senators, several of them staunch Trump allies, signed a letter this year urging the president to keep marijuana a Schedule I drug. Led by North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd, the group argued that marijuana continues to be dangerous and that a shift would “undermine your strong efforts to Make America Great Again.” They argued, too, that marijuana negatively affects users’ physical and mental health, as well as road and workplace safety.

“The only winners from rescheduling will be bad actors such as Communist China, while Americans will be left paying the bill,” the letter said, referring to China’s place in the cannabis market.

As for decriminalizing marijuana, Trump has not previously committed to such a move, though he had considered reclassifying it for much of his second term. He once said as a candidate that it should remain a state-by-state issue.

As president, he has made his crusade against other drugs, especially fentanyl, a feature of his second term, ordering U.S. military attacks on Venezuelan and other boats the administration insists are ferrying drugs.

He signed another executive order declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction.

Barrow reported from Atlanta. Associated Press writer Seung Min Kim contributed to this report.

Settlement approved for Jennifer-Ruth Green ethics violations

The Indiana State Ethics Commission approved a settlement agreement for former Secretary of Public Safety Jennifer-Ruth Green, who will pay a $10,000 fine to resolve an ethics violations complaint.

The commission approved the settlement on Thursday morning, which means that Green will have to pay the fine within the next 60 days.

Under the agreement, the commission will not impose further penalties and both sides “shall result in the final disposition of this proceeding.” Green waived her statutory right to a public hearing to contest the complaint, according to the agreement.

In October, Green announced her candidacy in the Republican primary to face U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, D-Highland, in Indiana’s first Congressional District in 2026. Green ran against Mrvan in 2022 and lost.

The Committee to Elect Jennifer-Ruth Green issued a statement Thursday calling the settlement “a major legal victory” for Green.

“(The) Office of Inspector General attempted to throw the kitchen sink at her based on politically motivated sham of an investigation, including nine charges alleging everything from criminal conduct to inappropriate behavior, along with a laundry list of petty accusations,” according to the statement.

Green took responsibility for “minor violations that occurred” including the Facebook page usage and using a state vehicle, according to the statement. But, there was no social media policy and the car use was “explicitly approved by her government attorney,” according to the statement.

“Jennifer-Ruth accepted this settlement and responsibility for minor violations because she has integrity, and she recognized that justice and fairness were unlikely in an environment where pursuing full vindication would require a prolonged legal battle costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, against vindictive actors wielding unlimited taxpayer-funded resources to attack her reputation, character and career,” according to the statement.

Green, who resigned Sept. 5, faced code of ethics violations for political activity, ghost employment, misuse of state property, and prohibition against retaliation.

Green, who was appointed to the role in January, allegedly violated the political activity and ghost employment rules for asking employees to generate content and proofread posts on her “Elect Jennifer-Ruth Green” Facebook page, according to the complaint.

When Green had a meeting with a National Republican Congressional Committee political director during work hours in a conference room in a state-owned building, the complaint alleged those were violations of the ghost employment and misuse of state property rules.

Green also violated the ghost employment rule when she asked employees to perform personal tasks for her on state time on multiple occasions, including retrieving her assigned state vehicle from Crown Point, the complaint stated.

Further, Green violated the misuse of state property rule when she included her state title on her Battle-Proven Leadership website, where she promotes training seminars and her book, and when she used and required an employee to use her state vehicle for her personal use, according to the complaint.

After learning that an employee reported her to the OIC, Green violated the prohibition against retaliation when she threatened the employee with demotion or termination and “made derogatory comments” toward the employee, according to the complaint.

TSMC Targets 2027 Start For Advanced Chip Output In Arizona

TSMC Targets 2027 Start For Advanced Chip Output In Arizona

Taiwan Semiconductor is set to begin moving chipmaking tools into its second Arizona fab around summer 2026, positioning the plant to start 3-nanometer production in 2027, Nikkei Asia reports. Sources say the equipment move is expected in the July–September quarter next year, accelerating a project previously slated to come online in 2028 and aligning with Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei’s push to speed up U.S. output by at least “several quarters.”

Installing tools is a major milestone, but industry executives told Nikkei Asia that qualifying production lines and ramping output can take up to a year—and longer for advanced nodes that involve more than 1,000 process steps and extensive transfer and verification work.

TSMC’s first advanced overseas fab in Arizona is already producing chips for Apple and Nvidia’s Blackwell AI processors. Once the $165 billion Arizona buildout is complete—five fabs, two advanced packaging plants and an R&D center—the company expects roughly 30% of its most advanced chips to be made in the U.S.

The push comes as U.S. customers accounted for 76% of TSMC revenue in the July–September quarter, driven by AI demand from clients such as Nvidia, Apple, AMD, Intel and Google. By contrast, TSMC has paused construction of its second Kumamoto fab in Japan amid weaker demand for mature chips and a reassessment of future needs.

Asked for comment, TSMC pointed to Wei’s October remarks: “With the strong collaboration and support from our leading US customers and the US federal, state, and city government, we continue to speed up our capacity expansion in Arizona. We are making tangible progress and executing well to our plan.”
