“Algo pasó, me enojé y terminé ignorándolo”, dijo Williams.

Education Department To Start Garnishing Wages Of Defaulted Student Loan Borrowers In January

Education Department To Start Garnishing Wages Of Defaulted Student Loan Borrowers In January

As we and others have noted several times over the last year, the US government will be garnishing the wages of student loan borrowers in default – with actual garnishment now set to begin in January, CNBC reports.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon speaks during a press briefing at the White House, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

A spokesperson for the US Department of Education confirmed the plan, which will mark the first time a portion of borrowers’ paychecks have actually been at risk since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, when collection activity was halted.

Starting the week of Jan. 7, the Education Department expects around 1,000 defaulted student loan borrowers to receive notices of administrative wage garnishment, the spokesperson said. After that, the number of notified borrowers will continue to increase. -CNBC

While the US government can seize borrowers’ federal tax refunds, wages, Social Securiity and disability benefits, the Education Department can legally seize up to 15% of a student loan holder’s after-tax income to apply toward their debt.

More than 42 million Americans have student loan debt, which now exceeds $1.6 trillion.

There are currently more than 5 million student loan borrowers in default, a number which could explode to roughly 10 million borrowers soon, the Education Department said in April.

As the WSJ noted in June,

Until past due payments are paid in full or the default status is resolved, borrowers could see up to 15% of their wages automatically deducted from their paychecks.

Borrowers who have been newly reported as delinquent since then on their student loans have seen an average 60-point drop in their credit scores, according to TransUnion. Nine percent of borrowers who fell into delinquency were current on their payments by April, according to TransUnion.

The Education Department has been urging borrowers to resume payments and emphasizing the consequences. Roughly 43 million borrowers owe more than $1.6 trillion in student-loan debt.

More than nine million of them are expected to see their credit scores drop this year, according to data from the New York Fed released in March.

Meanwhile, the job market for Gen Z is looking beyond dismal – as hiring has been down for the better part of a year amid signs that layoffs are ticking up.

According to a July survey from Cengage Group, of more than 2 million people who earned their bachelor’s degrees in the spring of 2025, just 30% reported finding a full-time job in their field. The report also found that around 76% of employers reported hiring the same number or fewer entry-level employees in 2025 vs. 2024, citing a tightening labor market, the rise of AI, and broader economic pressures that include inflation and Trump’s tariffs.

According to Nich Tremper, senior economics for payroll and HR service provider Gusto, the slowdown is in large part due to overhiring during the post-pandemic economy in 2021 and 2022 which saw businesses offering high salaries to compete for talent.

Layoffs, meanwhile, are at their highest level since the pandemic, with around 1.1 million announced job cuts between January and October 2025, according to data from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas cited by CNBC

“Folks are kind of just sitting still,” said Tremper. “They’re not looking for new roles, they’re not leaving their current roles. Without those new jobs available, it’s hard for an entry-level employee to get their foot in the door and start their career.”

As of September, the unemployment rate for recent college grads reached 9.7%, the same as for 20-24-year-olds with only a high school diploma, according to the Fed

Josh Downs y Alec Pierce.

Deadly Clashes Erupt Between US-Backed SDF & US-Backed Syrian Army In Aleppo

Deadly Clashes Erupt Between US-Backed SDF & US-Backed Syrian Army In Aleppo

Via The Cradle

A new bout of deadly fighting has erupted between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian military this week, coinciding with a top Turkish official’s visit to Syria and continued tension over a deal to integrate the Kurdish group into Damascus’s forces.

The clashes have calmed down, yet the situation remains volatile. Damascus claims it took steps to de-escalate the fighting. “The General Staff of the Syrian Arab Army issued an order to halt targeting of SDF fire sources in Aleppo after neutralizing several of them, narrowing the scope of clashes away from civilians,” the Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It said the army “stood up to its responsibilities in protecting and defending the people, without making any moves to alter control lines, limiting its actions to responding to sources of fire.”

Several people have been killed since early Monday morning. “The SDF carried out systematic attacks today in Aleppo, directly targeting densely populated residential neighborhoods and Al-Razi Hospital. The assaults resulted in the death of two civilians and injuries to others, including several civil defense volunteers,” the Syrian Interior Ministry announced late on Monday.

He described the escalation as “part of repeated attempts to undermine the 10 March agreement signed with the Syrian state.” The SDF has blamed the violence on the Syrian army.

“A checkpoint jointly manned by our forces and the [Damascus-affiliated] General Security Forces at the Al-Shihan roundabout in [northern] Aleppo came under an armed attack by factions affiliated with the interim defense ministry, leaving two of our personnel injured with varying degrees of wounds,” the SDF-affiliated Asayish security force said in a statement.

The SDF said in its own statement that the “attack carried out by factions affiliated with the defense ministry” is “a clear continuation of uncontrolled escalation that threatens the city’s security and civilian lives, and exposes the Damascus government’s inability to control its factions.”

The Kurdish group announced in a later update that the fighting had spread to the Kurdish-majority Aleppo neighborhoods of Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud. “Residents of the neighborhoods, along with the [Kurdish-led] Internal Security Forces [Asayish], continue to confront this aggression, taking all possible measures to protect themselves and civilian lives,” it said.

The Syrian Interior Ministry rejected the statement and said Kurdish forces stationed in the two neighborhoods were “treacherously” attacking Syrian positions at joint checkpoints run by both sides – in violation of “the agreements in place.”

— Ariel Oseran أريئل أوسيران (@ariel_oseran) December 22, 2025

The clashes coincided with a visit to Syria by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. “We have not seen any initiative or serious will on the part of the Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF] to implement the 10 March [integration] agreement. There has been systematic stalling by the SDF regarding the agreement,” Fidan said during a press conference with his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shaibani.

“The Syrian Defense Ministry recently presented a simple proposal to positively advance the integration process. [The SDF] responded [to the proposal] yesterday, and its response is currently under review,” Fidan added.

The Turkish foreign minister had threatened the SDF days earlier, saying that Ankara wanted a peaceful, negotiated settlement to the integration issue but warned that the “SDF should understand the patience of the relevant actors is running out.” Fidan added: “We do not want to see any need to resort to military means again.”

The SDF and the Syrian government reached an agreement in March to integrate the Kurdish group into Damascus’s forces. However, the two sides have been in disagreement about the deal’s implementation – particularly the SDF’s wish to remain under Kurdish command and enter the army as a bloc rather than dissolve and conscript, as Syria is demanding. As a result, clashes have intermittently broken out between the two sides over the past several months.

Damascus and the SDF have repeatedly accused each other of obstructing the agreement. Last month, the SDF accused the Syrian army and state-sponsored militias of facilitating the ISIS drone attacks on its positions.

The new proposal put forward by Damascus reportedly calls for incorporating the SDF’s roughly 50,000 fighters into Syrian security forces as three intact divisions and smaller brigades, rather than incorporating them as individuals – as the government previously demanded.

— Belaaz News (@TheBelaaz) December 22, 2025

In exchange, the SDF would be required to give up some chains of command and allow Syrian army units to operate under what is now SDF territory in Syria’s oil-rich northern and eastern regions.

After the collapse of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government last year, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) Syrian Defense Ministry incorporated numerous extremist factions into its ranks – including those that once made up Turkiye’s Syrian National Army (SNA) proxy.

As a result, the new Syrian army is made up predominantly of ISIS and Al-Qaeda-linked factions with a long history of persecuting Kurds and other minorities.

The Turkish army has occupied Syria since 2016 and has carried out several major military operations against the SDF over the past decade. The US-backed Kurdish group is closely linked to Ankara’s sworn foe, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which entered into a historic peace process with Turkiye this year.

If relatives or roommates disagree about plans, propose one small step everyone ought to appreciate, because steady agreements reduce stress and bring togetherness. Tend your home gently, and comfort will multiply with time.

Scorpio

October 23 – November 21

Afternoon conversations carry useful neighborhood insights. Your 3rd House of Local Life welcomes sociable Venus, which helps you mend misunderstandings and organize information. You might revise an email to your team or a text to your peers, keeping in mind that your intensity works best when it keeps the focus on solutions. Capricorn

December 22 – January 19

Capricorn, you’re stepping into a fresh chapter. Venus, planet of self-worth, enters your sign today! She invites you to treat yourself kindly — especially when it comes to the way you present your public image. You can’t control how others see you, but you can change how you see yourself. Pick a style that speaks to you, even if it isn’t the current trend. You may update your online presence to match, as well. Honor your natural rhythm to boost your confidence!

Aquarius

January 20 – February 18

Quiet time brings gentle healing and closure. Your 12th House of Karma welcomes the entrance of compassionate Venus. This transit is ideal for resting and reflecting upon past cycles of life. If possible, turn off your notifications and spend some time with yourself today. Meditation may not be your thing, but a nap on the couch can be just as restorative.

Chicago Cubs expected to sign right-handed reliever Jacob Webb to 1-year deal

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with right-handed reliever Jacob Webb with a club option for 2027, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the contract was pending a physical.

The 32-year-old Webb became a free agent last month when the Texas Rangers did not offer him a contract through arbitration. He went 5-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 55 appearances in his lone season with the Rangers.

Webb is 17-14 with a 2.99 ERA in six big-league seasons with Atlanta, the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles and Rangers. He won a World Series with Atlanta in 2021.

The Cubs reached the postseason last season for the first time since 2020 and have spent part of the offseason rebuilding their bullpen.

Brad Keller and Drew Pomeranz departed in free agency, but the Cubs re-signed left-hander Caleb Thielbar to a $4.5 million, one-year contract earlier this month.

The Cubs also added left-hander Hoby Milner on a one-year deal and signed right-hander Phil Maton to a two-year deal.

The Kitchn: This easy lasagna is what comfort food dreams are made of

Traditional lasagna is a once-a-year project for me. I love it deeply, but it’s rare that I can carve out time for it. When it does happen, it’s in the dead of winter when I have absolutely nothing else to do but spend the entire day in the kitchen.

While it’s impossible to beat the classic version — with a homemade bolognese sauce and, when I can manage it, homemade pasta — I’m all about an easier version that makes lasagna a much more frequent occurrence. This recipe is exactly that. This lasagna is about as low-lift as you can get while still achieving cheesy, crowd-pleasing results. Here’s how to make it.

Why you’ll love it

This recipe uses store-bought sauce (make sure you get one you love). There are just three components that make a lasagna great: the pasta, the cheese, and the sauce.
The lasagna noodles cook right in the sauce. Since the noodles aren’t pre-boiled, they’ll cook from the heat and steam in the oven. It’s important that they’re completely covered in the sauce so they cook evenly.

Key ingredients in lasagna

Ground beef: You’ll need 1 pound of lean ground beef.
Marinara sauce: Since this recipe starts with a jar of marinara for ease, make sure it’s one that tastes great. My favorite brand is Rao’s, but choose your personal favorite.
Cheese: Use two types of cheese – shredded low-moisture mozzarella and whole-milk ricotta.
Regular lasagna noodles: While classic dry lasagna noodles are typically boiled before they’re layered, there’s no real reason why you have to cook them ahead of time — they can actually be layered in with the sauce and cheese as is. And yes, this is just regular lasagna noodles!

Helpful tips

Why I don’t call for no-boil noodles. No-boil lasagna noodles are a modern convenience, but honestly I’m not a huge fan of them — I find they almost always get overcooked in the casserole. Regular sturdy lasagna noodles take longer to cook than no-boil noodles, but as long as they’re completely covered in sauce and the lasagna is tightly covered with aluminum foil, they cook perfectly right in the oven and never get overcooked.
The lasagna can (and should) rest before eating. Like all lasagnas, this one is great made ahead, and actually will be better made a little ahead of eating. Yes it’s tempting to cut into the lasagna right when you pull it from the oven, but let it rest on a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes. This will help firm up all the layers and make it much easier to slice a square. And of course you can make it a day ahead or in the morning then reheat.

Make-ahead and storage tips

Make ahead: The lasagna can be assembled and refrigerated up to two days in advance, or frozen for up to one month. Thaw the frozen lasagna for 2 days in the refrigerator before baking.
Storage: Leftovers can be stored, tightly wrapped, in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Easy Lasagna

Serves 8 to 10

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped

1 pound lean ground beef

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 (24- to 25-ounce) jar marinara sauce (3 cups), such as Rao’s or Newman’s Own

12 ounces low-moisture mozzarella cheese, shredded (about 3 cups), divided

15 dry lasagna noodles (not no-boil, about 2/3 of a 1-pound box), divided

15 to 16 ounces whole-milk ricotta cheese (about 2 cups), divided

1. Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 400 F.

2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a 12-inch or larger regular or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add 1 finely chopped medium yellow onion, 1 pound lean ground beef, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, and cook, breaking the beef up into small pieces with a wooden spoon, until the beef is cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 5 minutes.

3. Open 1 (24- to 25-ounce) jar marinara sauce (3 cups). Spread a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Stir the remaining sauce into the ground beef mixture.

4. Shred 12 ounces low-moisture mozzarella cheese if needed (3 cups). Place five lasagna noodles in the baking dish, breaking them if needed to create a single layer (it’s OK if the noodles overlap slightly). Dollop and spread 1 cup of the ricotta cheese over the noodles. Dollop and spread about 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce on the ricotta, then sprinkle with 1 cup of the mozzarella.

5. Arrange five more noodles over the mozzarella, followed by 1 cup of the ricotta cheese, 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce, and 1 cup of the mozzarella. Top with a final layer of five noodles and the remaining sauce, spreading the sauce thin so that it almost completely covers the noodles. (Reserve the remaining 1 cup mozzarella for the end of baking.) Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.

6. Bake for 1 hour. Check to make sure the noodles are done by poking the lasagna with a knife; the knife should slide easily through all the layers. If it doesn’t, cover and cook for 15 minutes more.

7. Uncover the lasagna and sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup mozzarella. Bake uncovered until the mozzarella is melted and lightly browned, and the sauce is bubbling, 8 to 10 minutes more.

Terry Savage: The stock market and you

There’s an old Wall Street saying: No one ever rings a bell at the top. Only in hindsight do we know that the market has peaked and is headed down.

There’s another Wall Street truism that’s relevant here: Bull markets climb stairs, but bear markets ride a slide. In other words, stocks go down far faster than they go up.

One of the greatest lessons the stock market teaches is humility. No one can call the tops in any market cycle. And everyone who has said “Get out of the market” has been proved wrong. After all, we continue making all-time highs in the major averages. So, if you stuck around — as Warren Buffet did — you eventually came out ahead.

The key is the word “eventually.” While market statisticians and historians and institutional money managers can afford to take the longest perspective, can you say the same? Or is your time horizon more limited — perhaps because retirement is fast approaching?

That is the question you must ask yourself right now — as the market approaches another headline mega-number — Dow 50,000 — and attracts the attention of the media and pundits. Instead of being proud and complacent, self-preservation demands you be analytical and conservative.

Check your exposure

The Baby Boom generation has had unprecedented direct investment exposure to the stock market. While older generations earned pensions generated by huge institutional pools of money, the boomers can check the value of their 401(k) accounts or IRAs online, instantly. And they are responsible for their own investment decisions.

The bull market has created unexpected wealth. The latest survey of retirement accounts by Fidelity shows there were 654,000 401(k) millionaires, the highest level ever, according to the Wall Street Journal. At T. Rowe Price, about 2.6% of plan participants had balances above $1 million, up from 1.3% at the end of 2022. And a significantly high percentage of those accounts have more than 70% of assets invested in stocks.

Congratulations. Now what? Or, better yet, what if?

Letting your money ride in the market has been a successful and profitable strategy. Why change now? Because time is running out. Not time for the bull market, but time until you need to spend the cash.

According to Investech.com, there have been 10 bear markets since 1956, representing an average decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average of 33.5% from top to bottom. On average those bear markets lasted 1.3 years from market peak to bottom, and required an average of 4.5 years to fully recover.

But averages can mask extremes. The bear market that started in January 1973 took the DJIA down a staggering 45.1% in 23 months. And it took 9.8 years for the market to reach its previous highs. And after adjusting for inflation, the break-even point was closer to 20 years!

In more recent history, the bear market associated with the dot-com bust in 2000 was the third longest in history, with the S&P 500 dropping nearly 50% from peak to bottom. And in 2007-2008 the market declined 53% from the peak!

The fact that today’s investors might be surprised by those statistics is a testament to the short memory of pain, and the powerful attraction of greed. Yes, it all worked out well for those who stayed invested, since the market is now at all-time highs. But someone sold at the bottom — out of fear or panic or need.

And that’s the point of suggesting you reassess your stock market gains as we approach year end. This is not about calculating stock market price/earnings ratios, or the impact of economic policy or the future of A-1.

Young investors just starting out should always bet on the future growth of America. But baby boomers face a more immediate challenge: making your money last as long as you do.

This is not about market timing. This is about asset allocation. This is about capital preservation. This is about self-discipline.

This is about sleeping at night during your retirement by switching a portion of your retirement funds to the short-term bond fund in your plan or a money market mutual fund or T-bills. Listen to your gut — not your 32-year old “financial adviser.”

Better yet, listen to Warren Buffett, who has raised a record $380 billion cash hoard inside Berkshire Hathaway. He now owns more T-bills than the Federal Reserve! If he is satisfied with earning only about 3.6% on T-bills, why should you risk more?

Buffett isn’t giving up on America, and he’s not afraid of “running out of money.” He’s waiting for bargains at lower prices. And if he is willing to sell some stocks to amass a record pile of cash, shouldn’t you consider doing the same?
