The Kid Whisperer: How to reinforce positive behaviors with kids

Dear Kid Whisperer,

I’ve always used Class Dojo to give positive behavior points, and I’ve had a class store as well to cash in their points for activities and prizes. I’ve never felt great about flooding the kids with prizes for expected behavior and it rarely works for difficult students anyway, but where do the rewards stand in the world of Behavioral Leadership?

Answer: When we train teachers and administrators around the country, we let them know that our strategies and procedures for building relationships, sharing control, and teaching positive behaviors are easier and more effective in doing these things than any other method of trying to elicit positive behaviors. The fact is that educators are all doing the jobs of at least three normal people, and they are using traditional discipline, which doesn’t work.

So, let’s start off with easier: Is giving out points (entering them on a computer or let’s say giving out tickets as many teachers do) easier than not doing that? Well, no, of course not. It’s an extra thing. It involves at least briefly pausing your teaching to give a kid a point on the computer or placing a ticket in their hand.

It also costs money and time to get trinkets and treats for kids. You must take the time to go to Walmart to buy these things with your own money. Now you have lost both money and time, two things that teachers don’t have much of.

Easier? Nope.

Is it effective? You have already mentioned that it’s not effective with difficult kids. That is correct. I would add that it’s not effective with any kids, but it’s most obviously not effective with tougher kids, since with easy kids, anything seems effective. That’s why we say that those kids are “easy.”

The reason that’s it’s not effective is that it doesn’t break the “Bad Kid” Cycle. Of course, those are sarcastic quotes and there are no inherently bad kids, but this refers to a cycle in some kids’ lives whereby they get attention and control immediately after using negative behaviors (behaviors that cause problems for others). As you already know, these negative behaviors have become so habitualized in tough kids that the possibility of some trinket in the future will never be as appealing as the rush of getting attention from her peers and teacher and perhaps being able to control the color of her teacher’s face.

More effective? Not even close.

So, what is both easier and more effective in breaking the “Bad Kid” Cycle? How do we create an environment whereby all kids get more attention and control when they use positive behaviors instead of negative behaviors while doing something that is easier than what you are doing now?

The answer is to do something that is bizarre and will make you very uncomfortable but will change and even save the lives of kids in your care. Students will think that you doing this is weird, and I mean very weird. Only try this if you care more about helping kids than you do about being comfortable.

This is the single most important Behavioral Leadership strategy, and it will change you, your students and perhaps the world: Instead of just teaching and waiting for something to go wrong with student behavior and then giving that behavior attention (“Sit down!” “Stop it!” “Quit touching her!”) spend your time preemptively giving attention to all the behaviors that you want to see the moment you see them. This involves no tickets, points, prizes or trips to your keyboard to type in a kid’s points.

Remember, it is weird, but this is the number one strategy that I used during my career as a teacher to break the “Bad Kid” Cycle:

Kid Whisperer: I noticed Kid #2 is seated. I noticed Kid #19 has already completed four out of five problems. I noticed Kid #9 is being pleasant.

Kid #9 has had a habit of punching other kids in the face. So, I need to make sure I give that kid what he wants (attention and control over me) when he’s exhibiting the behavior of not punching people, which he’s almost always doing.

Is this weird and will it be uncomfortable? Yes. Is it revolutionizing the world of education for thousands of teachers while saving them from having to go to Walmart to buy stuff to bribe kids to act like decent human beings? Absolutely.

Answer Angel: ManningCast fan?

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I walked into my living room and my teenage daughter started laughing at me. When I asked her what was so funny, she said, “You’re wearing a quarter-zip! I didn’t know you were such a big ManningCast fan.”

I didn’t ask her about this comment, fearing she would think I am so uncool. But can you please explain to me what she is talking about. And does the fact that I am clueless make me uncool?

–Caitlin’s Dad

Dear Dad: If you are uncool, so am I. To show my ignorance, I had to do a little research since I too was unfamiliar with both the quarter-zip and ManningCast.

Here goes: A quarter-zip is a type of pullover especially popular with young or youngish men, often worn over the traditional button-up men’s shirt. It’s a sweater/sweatshirt, with a standup collar and a zipper that extends only a quarter way down the front.

An online headline in Fortune magazine informed me: “Gen Z men are flocking to quarter-zip pullovers….” (Gen Z men are generally viewed as young men in their 20s.)

I gather that you, Dad, are not in that age group. Well, neither are former NFL quarterback brothers Eli and Peyton Manning. Their ESPN program, ManningCast, often shows them in quarter-zips, which they have turned into a running joke on the show. This garment has gained popularity because it gives a casual look that also is acceptable in a lot of business settings where young or youngish men gather.

And a related menswear question…

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I was wearing my sleeveless Patagonia fleece vest that my wife gave me a couple years ago when I met a friend for coffee and he said, “Wait, you’re not a tech bro.” I’m a 51-year-old high school history teacher with a paunch belly. Please translate.

–Philip H.

Dear Philip: Frequently you’ll see (mostly) men but sometimes women wearing a zippered fleece vest — a sleeveless full-zip garment over a button-up shirt and even over a quarter-zip (see above). It is a garment now often associated with “tech bros” — a slang term for individuals working in technology or finance who perceive themselves as stereotypically masculine. Often, the vest is worn for extra warmth or … to hide a big belly. Sometimes they are a freebie embroidered with a tech company logo.

Angelic Readers

Mary from Montana writes: “I read with interest a recent rant about the writer’s choice of hats and your litany of the numerous kinds of hats available to men. The one hat not mentioned in your answer was the Irish/Scottish ‘gentleman‘s cap.’ It is jaunty in all the best ways. On a recent tour in Ireland, we had about 25 men from all different parts of the United States, backgrounds, jobs, lifestyles, etc., where the norm seemed to be the good old ball cap but that quickly changed as we toured beautiful Ireland.

“One by one the men on tour tried those hats on, purchased and looked great in them! By the end of the tour most males were sporting a gentleman’s cap. Upon our return home, I thought my husband would set his ‘touring top’ on a closet shelf, but he’s been wearing it and it looks great on him! In a state where cowboy hats abound, he is classy but casual in rural Montana, USA!”

Kathy S. asks: “Could you please recommend where I could buy good quality flannel sheets. I have purchased flannel sheets from The Vermont Country Store and L.L.Bean and both sets of sheets shrank to the point that they barely fit my bed. And yes, I did follow the washing instructions.” (From Ellen: I gave up on flannel sheets many years ago because they made me so hot. But some readers in colder climates swear by them. Let’s hear reader recommendations for Kathy.)

Tulsi’s Assessment That Putin Doesn’t Want To Conquer All Of Ukraine Is Absolutely Correct

Tulsi’s Assessment That Putin Doesn’t Want To Conquer All Of Ukraine Is Absolutely Correct

Authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack,

There are logical military and strategic reasons why he’s not interested in this whatsoever at all…

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard responded to a report from Reuters alleging that “Putin has not abandoned his aims of capturing all of Ukraine and reclaiming parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire”.

Tulsi condemned that as a “lie” to undermine Trump’s peace efforts and thus risk a possible hot Russian-US war.

She also claimed that “Russia’s battlefield performance indicates it does not currently have the capability to conquer and occupy all of Ukraine, let alone Europe.”

Her assessment is absolutely correct for the reasons that’ll now be explained.

For starters, Putin authorized the special operation after diplomacy failed to neutralize Ukrainian-emanating threats from NATO, ergo why Russia was compelled to resort to force.

Unlike what many “Non-Russian Pro-Russians” nowadays claim on social media, “The ‘War Of Attrition’ Was Improvised & Not Russia’s Plan All Along”, occurring only because the UK and Poland unexpectedly sabotaged spring 2022’s peace deal.

Unprecedented support from NATO led to the aforesaid “war of attrition” and resultant stalemate along large parts of the front for protracted periods of time.

As was assessed as early as that summer in July 2022, “All Sides Of The Ukrainian Conflict Underestimated Each Other”, which is why this support caught Russian planners off guard but also why it failed to inflict a strategic defeat upon Russia too. These 20 constructive critiques of Russia’s special operation from November 2022 are also relevant to this day too.

Even if Russia achieves a long-awaited breakthrough across the front, whatever territory it steamrolls into beyond that of the four disputed regions would likely only be for leverage for coercing Ukraine into complying with more of Putin’s demands for peace in exchange for withdrawing from there. Expanding Russia’s territorial claims through the holding of referenda in new regions would require controlling a significant amount of their land with an equally significant amount of people still there to participate.

Neither can be taken for granted, especially that locals won’t flee as refugees either deeper into Ukraine or across the front lines into Russia, hence the unreliability of this scenario. The strategic consequences could also be disproportionately severe if this ever unfolds since Trump could be provoked into escalating US involvement in the conflict after feeling like Putin disrespected him by doing this amidst their peace talks or possibly even manipulated him by supposedly only participating in them to buy time.

Trump has slammed Biden for the US’ complete loss of Afghanistan so he’s unlikely to let Putin conquer all of Ukraine in the political fantasy that this one day becomes possible. An escalation of US involvement in response could see it approve NATO allies’ entrance into Ukraine for drawing a “red line” as far east as possible and threaten direct “retaliation” against Russia if those forces are attacked en route. Putin has done his utmost to avoid World War III up until this point so he’s unlikely to suddenly risk it in that event.

There’s also the threat of a terrorist insurgency all across Western Ukraine if Russian forces ever reach that far, which could be costly for the Kremlin in terms of lives, treasure, and opportunities, something that Putin would likely seek to avoid as well. Bearing all this in mind, from the military difficulties to the disproportionately severe strategic consequences of claiming territory beyond the disputed regions, Tulsi is therefore absolutely correct in assessing that Putin doesn’t want to conquer all of Ukraine.

Chicago Blackhawks handed a 6th consecutive loss by the Philadelphia Flyers heading into Christmas break

Santa Claus made an appearance at the United Center on Tuesday night. He sounded the horn before the puck drop of the Chicago Blackhawks game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Hawks wanted a win for Christmas. They got more coal instead, with a sixth-straight loss in regulation, this time a 3-1 contest to the Flyers.

Scoring was hard to come by once again for the home team without Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar. The Hawks have scored just eight goals in the absence of Bedard this season, a 1.6 goals-per-game average across five games.

At 13-17-6, they’re at the bottom of the NHL standings going into the Christmas break. It’s a far cry from the playoff talk that surrounded the team heading into Thanksgiving.

“We’re doing our best, I don’t think we’re focusing on what’s been in the past,” a dejected André Burakovsky said. “We look forward to the next game and try to find success.”

Photos: Philadelphia Flyers 3, Chicago Blackhawks 1

Without Bedard and Nazar, the Hawks don’t have a forward who is decisive in shooting the puck. The home team had four shots on goal in the first period.

The Hawks prevented the Flyers from utilizing the center of the ice for a good portion of the first period. Philadelphia right winger Travis Konecny was able to find a crack in the Hawks’ defense at 10:17 in the first to go up 1-0.

The power play, despite not seeing a goal with a man advantage, produced some looks for the Hawks in the second. They took 10 of their 21 shots on goal in the second period.

“In the end, we had more chances than they did (but) we didn’t score,” Hawks coach Jeff Blashill said. “On the power play there at the end, we generated chances (and) that was probably our best power play.

“(We got to) keep grinding and find a way to score.”

Ryan Donato scored a goal for the first time since Nov. 28 at 18:30 in the second period. It was a sigh of relief, even with the chances he’s generated.

“I think it’d be different if I wasn’t getting the chances, that would be a little scary,” Donato said. “Definitely a little bit of weight off the shoulders.”

It can be tough to deal with a skid like the Hawks are on, especially with a young team. But the skaters seem to be keeping their heads up.

“The young guys are actually always positive, in great moods and happy-go-lucky guys,” Donato said. “It’s a matter of finding a way to win.

“There’s no negative attitude, there’s no feeling sorry for ourselves. I think everybody’s hungry to push in the right direction.”

Spencer Knight (17 saves) skated off the ice near the end of the third period, down 2-1. It was poorly timed, as the Flyers went on a breakaway with right winger Carl Grundstrom scoring the empty-netter to put Philadelphia up by two.

“I made the decision to pull him,” Blashill said. “I thought we were getting possession (and) we didn’t get possession, so that’s on me.”

Nick Lardis seems to be the Hawks’ best chance at putting shots in the back of the net without Bedard and Nazar. His ice time increased to 10:32 against the Flyers compared to 8:17 on Saturday in Ottawa.

He didn’t have any shots on goal, but he was active on the power play. The young player also got into a scuffle with right winger Matvei Michkov early in the third, sending them both to the penalty box.

“When you get into those type of combative situations, that brings the emotional level of the whole building up,” Blashill said. “At least it puts (the team) in a position to have that emotion rise, which I think is a good thing.”

If Lardis’ ice time is going to increase, Blashill is looking for a few things from the young winger.

“I would say finding space at this level, he’s not really fast and he’s not really big,” Blashill said. “He’s a good skater (but) he’s not going to separate himself with his speed, so I think he’s got to find the right spacing.”

For now, the Hawks need to enjoy the holiday break. With the Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders on the horizon, things aren’t getting easier.

“I think with where we’re at, (the break is) probably a good thing,” Blashill said. “I love Christmas, I love seeing my family and I’m sure a number of guys are the same way.

“Flying to Dallas that first day coming out is a hard thing, but we’re going to have to find a way to grind.”

Asking Eric: Neighbors park all over the street

Dear Eric: Three friends and I are planning an eight-day cruise in January.

Two other people found out about the trip and are now coming as well. We are fine with that but are not looking to make it a larger group and I am definitely not looking to turn into the “cruise director” for the group as often seems to happen.

There is one friend that we feel is going to be very upset when she finds out about the cruise and feel personally excluded. And to be honest she kind of was.

While we have been careful not to talk about the trip in general so as not to encourage other people to say they want to come along, we have very specifically not mentioned the trip to this person because she tends to be very negative and those of us going on the trip can really only take her in small doses.

Sad to say, none of us really want to spend what should be a fun vacation with her bringing us down. She doesn’t see this behavior in herself but everyone else does.

I’m torn whether to mention this trip to her in advance or let her find out about it on her own, most likely from social media. And if I let the information drop, I’m not sure how to do it. I know she’s going to be upset either way. Any advice?

– Anxious Cruiser

Dear Cruiser: I’d be inclined to suggest you say nothing if it weren’t for the sticky issue of the truth. It’s perfectly fine for a subset of a friend group to decide to do something that doesn’t necessarily involve the rest of the group. Bruised feelings might occur, but this isn’t in and of itself a betrayal.

But you’ve purposefully been trying to exclude this one friend, something that she might correctly infer should she find out about the trip through social media.

This is your right, of course, but you have to own your choices. To that end, think about what you personally desire from this friendship. It won’t help you to speak for the group – and hearing “we all think this…” never feels great. But you have an individual connection to this friend that may or may not be damaged by the group’s decision. Let that connection guide your actions.

Dear Eric: I own a few cars that I park on the street in front of my house. Some new toddlers and preschool kids are learning how to ride a bike. They circle constantly in front of my house instead of the house they rent next door to my house.

The neighbors park all over the street, and do not use the driveway. They have several cars and live in a cul-de-sac.

They are not watching or teaching the kids how to ride or even stay out of the road as cars come through. But that’s another issue.

My question is, do I have any rights as a homeowner and county resident to ask the renters to stay away from the area in front of my house and the cars parked in front?

My concern being the kids might hit my cars, and it’s actually annoying to see them in front of my house for hours. People think these are my kids and think I’m not watching them.

What can I do?

– Neighborhood Watch

Dear Watch: Depending on how much space there is on your street, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to ask the neighbors to keep their cars away or to keep their kids off the street. If you have an HOA, there may be some guidance there, but in general the street is for everyone.

If you’re noticing that the children are behaving dangerously or if you’re finding that they’re taking up more than their share of spaces, you should alert the parents, through a calm, civil conversation.

If I’m reading this correctly, you have a few cars on the street and the neighbors have a few cars on the street, but you don’t want them to park on the street. If this is the case, I’d presume it’s because they’re renters and you’re a homeowner. I’d encourage you to let go of that belief.

Indeed, a lot of your frustration could be alleviated by simply talking to all your neighbors. Is it really true that other neighbors think these are your kids? If they haven’t bothered to talk to you, then what does it matter? Respectfully, your annoyance is not your neighbors’ responsibility. You can ask for what you want but also listen when your neighbors respond with what they want. Peaceful coexistence is the goal, and that’s not going to happen if one person is dictating what can and can’t happen in the neighborhood.
