WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will attend the Supreme Court’s oral arguments Wednesday in a case involving the attempted firing of Fed governor Lisa Cook, an unusual show of support by the central bank chair.
The high court is considering whether President Donald Trump can fire Cook, an unprecedented attempt by the White House to remove an official appointed by former President Joe Biden. Powell plans to attend the Wednesday session, according to a person familiar with the matter.
It’s a much more public show of support than the Fed chair has previously shown Cook, who Trump first sought to fire in late August. Pro-Greenland protesters mock Donald Trump’s MAGA slogan with ‘Make America Go Away’ caps
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Red baseball caps spoofing Donald Trump’s iconic MAGA hats have become a symbol of Danish and Greenlandic defiance against the U.S. president’s threat to seize the frozen territory.
The caps reading “Make America Go Away” — parodying Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan — have gained popularity along with several variants on social media and at public protests, including a weekend demonstration held in freezing weather in the Danish capital.
European governments are rallying behind Denmark, citing the need to defend Arctic regions and warning that threats against Greenland undermine Western security.
Protesters, however, are less diplomatic.
“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said 76-year-old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore one of the red caps at a protest Saturday.
The mock hats were created by Copenhagen vintage clothing store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen. Early batches flopped last year — until the Trump administration recently escalated its rhetoric over Greenland. Now there are popping up everywhere.
“When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke — it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” said Tonnesen, 58. “So I said, OK, what can I do?” Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite the Danes to show that Danish people support the people of Greenland?”
Demand suddenly surged from a trickle to selling out in the space of one weekend. Tonnesen said he has now ordered “several thousand.”
The original version designed by Tonnesen featured a play on words: “Nu det NUUK!” — a twist on the Danish phrase “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough,” substituting Nuuk, Greenland’s tiny capital.
Protesters at Saturday’s rally waved red-and-white Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried handmade signs mocking U.S. claims over the territory, which is slightly larger than Saudi Arabia.
“No Means No,” read one sign. Another declared, “Make America Smart Again.”
Wearing one of the spoof hats, protester Kristian Boye, 49, said the gathering in front of Copenhagen City Hall struck a lighthearted tone while delivering a serious message.
“I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now,” he said. “They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”

… after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she will call a national election on February 8 to seek voter backing for everything that guarantees a bond market collapse, namely increased spending, tax cuts and a new security strategy that is expected to accelerate a defence build-up.
According to Reuters, Takaichi plans to dissolve parliament on Friday ahead of the snap vote for all 465 seats in the lower house of parliament, in her first electoral test since becoming Japan’s first female premier in October.
“I am staking my own political future as prime minister on this election,” Takaichi told a press conference on Monday. “I want the public to judge directly whether they will entrust me with the management of the nation.”
Of course, that’s not the story at all: she is promising more spending and less taxes, so of course she will get what she wants from the free shit army. The question is what happens when Japanese bond yields rise so high the country can no longer pretend it isn’t facing the biggest bond crisis in history.
Takaichi has promised a two-year halt to a consumption tax of 8% on food, adding that her spending plans would create jobs, boost household spending and increase other tax revenues. And all for the low, low price of another 10-20% in debt/GDP.
Sure enough, the prospect of such a tax cut, which the government estimates would reduce its revenue by 5 trillion yen ($32 billion) a year, sent the yield on Japan’s 10-year government bonds to a 27-year high earlier on Monday.
Calling an early election allows Takaichi to cement her political role and capitalize on strong public support to tighten her grip on the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and shore up her coalition’s fragile majority. The election will test voter appetite for higher spending – i.e., more handouts – at a time when the rising cost of living is the public’s top concern. Then again, Takaichi can just blame the BOJ for not raising rates enough.
Having dealt with deflation for nearly 40 years, runaway prices are a new concept for Japan, yet that’s precisely where the country is right now: prices are the main worry of 45% of the respondents in a poll released by public broadcaster NHK last week, followed by diplomacy and national security at 16%.
Making sure inflation rises even more, Takaichi’s administration plans a new national security strategy this year after deciding to hasten a military build-up that will lift defence spending to 2% of GDP, a sharp break from decades in which Japan capped such outlays at around 1%. Translation: even more spending and even more debt monetization by the BOJ.
Takaichi has not set a new spending target beyond that level, but rising tension with China over Taiwan and disputed islands in the East China Sea, coupled with U.S. pressure for allies to spend more, are likely to push defence outlays higher. Last week, China banned exports of items destined for Japan’s military that have civilian and military uses, including some critical minerals.
“China has conducted military exercises around Taiwan, and economic coercion is increasingly being used through control of key supply-chain materials,” she said. “The international security environment is becoming more severe.”
The LDP and Ishin go into the Feb 8 election, which coincides with a planned national election in Thailand, with a combined 233 seats. Takaichi said her target was for the coalition to retain its majority in the lower chamber.
Her main challenger will be the Centrist Reform Alliance, a new political party combining the largest opposition group, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and Komeito, which ended its 26-year coalition with the LDP after Takaichi, a right-wing lawmaker, took over at the LDP. Together the parties hold 172 seats.
That new political group could propose to permanently abolish the 8% sales tax on food, a party official said earlier in the day.
“Now may be the best chance she has at taking advantage of this extraordinary popularity,” said Jeffrey Hall, a lecturer in Japanese studies at Kanda University of International Studies. But with opposition parties joining forces to oppose her, victory might not be straightforward, he added.
In any case, don’t expect any major changes in Japan’s political facade. Meanwhile the yen is trading near an all time low against the USD, and against that other export-focused currency, China’s yuan…

Still, at some point the BOJ will have to make a choice: contain inflation (and send the yen surging), or watch the world’s second largest bond market (of which 60% of is held by the BOJ), disintegrate.

Fashion designer Valentino dies at home in Rome, aged 93
ROME — Valentino Garavani, the jet-set Italian designer whose high-glamour gowns — often in his trademark shade of “Valentino red” — were fashion show staples for nearly half a century, has died at home in Rome, his foundation announced Monday. He was 93.
“Valentino Garavani was not only a constant guide and inspiration for all of us, but a true source of light, creativity and vision,″ the foundation said in a statement posted on social media.
His body will lie in state at the foundation’s headquarters in Rome on Wednesday and Thursday. The funeral will be held Friday at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome’s Piazza della Repubblica.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic tenía el gran escenario y una lista de hitos para celebrar con su victoria número 100 en el Abierto de Australia.

Crece inquietud en México ante movimientos militares de EEUU

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO (AP) — México está cada vez más pendiente de los movimientos militares de Estados Unidos y cualquier actividad inusual enciende las alarmas después del ataque a Venezuela, las crecientes presiones contra los cárteles y cuando las conversaciones sobre seguridad entre ambos países se han intensificado.
Por ello la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum se refirió el lunes al alerta en el Pacífico lanzada por las autoridades estadounidenses de aviación y la presencia de un avión militar estadounidense en un aeropuerto del centro del país supuestamente para recoger a funcionarios mexicanos y capacitarlos en el país vecino.
Hace tres días la Administración Federal de Aviación estadounidense (FAA, por sus siglas en inglés) pidió precaución ante “actividades militares” en el Pacífico cerca de México y Centroamérica, lo que tuvo a México en vilo durante “unas dos horas”, reconoció Sheinbaum, hasta que el gobierno tuvo la certeza “por escrito” de que no había “ningún sobrevuelo sobre territorio nacional”.
La presidenta dijo que las autoridades estadounidenses no habían avisado previamente de ninguna actividad y por eso “fue alertado tanto Relaciones Exteriores como la Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, que es quien tiene que autorizar la entrada de cualquier aeronave a territorio mexicano, y se estuvo en comunicación con la embajada para poder conocer exactamente qué es lo que estaban planteando”.
Finalmente Estados Unidos ofreció las coordinadas exactas de los movimientos y la Secretaría de Transportes mexicana emitió un comunicado diciendo que no existían “implicaciones operativas ni restricciones para México”. Avisos similares de la FAA se habían dado meses antes luego de los ataques estadounidenses a presuntas lanchas de narcotraficantes y del ataque a Venezuela.
Poco después, la presencia de un avión Hércules de Estados Unidos en el aeropuerto de Toluca volvió a hacer saltar las alarmas y el senador opositor Clemente Castañeda pidió explicaciones porque la Constitución mexicana exige que el Senado autorice la salida de tropas nacionales, el paso de tropas extranjeras por territorio mexicano o la presencia de las mismas en aguas mexicanas por más de un mes.
Sheinbaum dijo que no fue precisa tal autorización porque se trató de una operación “logística”.
“Aterrizó el avión de Estados Unidos, subieron servidores públicos a ese avión y fueron allá a capacitación” que ofrece el Comando Norte y que dura en torno a un mes, explicó. “¿Quién autoriza esto? Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional”, agregó.
El gabinete de seguridad había dicho en su cuenta oficial de X el domingo por la noche que tales operaciones de capacitación “se realizan conforme a los protocolos establecidos y en apego a los acuerdos de colaboración bilateral”.
Pese a las explicaciones, Sheinbaum no aclaró por qué la aeronave estadounidense llegó al aeropuerto de Toluca, 60 kilómetros al oeste de Ciudad de México, en lugar del aeropuerto militar del norte de la capital, ni por qué no se usó para el traslado un avión de la Fuerza Aérea Mexicana, aunque reconoció que eso es lo deseable.
Estos movimientos tuvieron lugar días después de la más reciente llamada entre Sheinbaum y el presidente Donald Trump, en la que la mexicana descartó una intervención estadounidense en México, y posteriores contactos entre el secretario de Relaciones Exteriores, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, y el secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, que en un comunicado conjunto dijeron que “es necesario hacer más para enfrentar las amenazas compartidas”.
Este viernes habrá una reunión de seguridad que deberá producir “acciones tangibles… con resultados significativos” contra los carteles, según el comunicado de la semana pasada, y los jefes de la diplomacia de ambos países también acordaron una cita de seguridad en febrero en Washington.

ICE itself might even have to lay off its daily round-up of rapists, cut-throats, and child-molesters, to wait out the cold-snap.
Meanwhile, things elsewhere roughen up a little.
For instance: Davos, Switzerland, where the World Economic Forum (WEF) holds its annual jamboree of vampire squids. Klaus Schwab is out, by the way. He skulked off in a malodorous cloud of embezzlement and sexual irregularities, to be replaced by Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the hedge fund that owns everything in the USA and wants more.
Larry Fink is living proof of the banality of evil, an early pioneer of mortgage-backed securities, which nearly blew up the global banking system in 2008-09, after which he pioneered the wholesale purchasing of foreclosed houses by hedge funds. Neat trick. Cornered the market on all the inventory, so, now, nobody under age-fifty in America can afford to buy a house — but you can rent one from BlackRock!

Larry Fink landed as interim head of the WEF largely because BlackRock has been espousing Klaus Schwab’s ideas about “Stakeholder Capitalism,” which allows global corporations to pretend that they have beneficent “societal purpose” while they go about ass-raping the common folk of Western Civ. Climate change and green new deals top that agenda, along with diversity, equity, and inclusion and additional bullshit about “environment, social, and governance factors” (ESG) in its global strategies portfolio — meaning, mandates for exactly the kind of policies that are destroying Europe’s economies, de-industrialization foremost.
Among the invited speakers at Davos this year: one US President Donald Trump. He is going to kill them with kindness, a tongue-bath of Trumpian compliments — you are the greatest. . . beautiful leaders like the world has never seen before — while he artfully inserts a stiletto in the WEF’s liver. You might not even know that the org is a walking corpse until a few weeks after the Davos meeting shuts down. But Mr. Trump is going to terminate its influence and send a message that the era of globalist shenanigans is over.
The president can point to two demonstration projects.
First, the USA’s acquisition of Greenland one way or another, either ownership or some leasing agreement or revised treaty arrangement. You can be sure that the EU does not like that — big bully America picking on cuddly little Denmark, “the world’s happiest country.” But since they are happily oblivious to Greenland’s strategic importance (vis-a-vis China’s nefarious ambitions there) it is up to America to prepare the game-board. The art of the deal, of course, is making it fait accompli before the targeted property-owner has even entered the discussion. How that works will be a painful discovery for the walking dead Davosanistas.
The second demo will be how the recent arrest of Nicolás Maduro leads to revelations of the globalist conspiracy to interfere in elections here, there, and everywhere. Señor Maduro sold his Smartmatic system to all comers, and you can bet that the plea bargain talks are already underway in Brooklyn (if not already concluded). Yes, it is our old friend, the Kraken, which is a related species of giant squid to the vampire variety convened in Davos.

This election fraud business is really consequential. It redounds to the criminality of the Democratic Party that had the impudence to jam an enfeebled marionette, “Joe Biden,” into the Oval Office, allowing a treasonous cabal of nihilists to nearly wreck the country. The massive evidence of that crime was clumsily suppressed by the cabal and its allies in the news business.
But it is surfacing again, now with Señor Maduro’s imprimatur, and it will turn into a force five storm off the coast of Florida as grand juries in Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale were empaneled a week ago to consider the myriad lawless operations mounted against Mr. Trump since 2015, including election fraud. The lawless are going to be rounded up, from Raffensperger in Georgia, to Katie Hobbs in Arizona, to Jocelyn Benson in Michigan, to Jena Griswold in Colorado, to dozens of other officials who were in on the big vote switcheroo of Nov. 3, 2020.
And when the revelations finally come, it will be too much for the foot-dragging villains in the US Senate to continue resisting — they will have to pass the SAVE Act or some legislation like it that requires voter ID, one election day, and paper ballots counted by humans, not machines.
It remains to be seen whether the Democratic Party goes extinct because of its exposed, widespread criminality, or because it simply can’t win an election without massive ballot fraud.

Progressive dinner is on the menu for Skokie Restaurant Week Jan. 23-Feb. 7
Downtown Skokie Restaurant Week changes up the usual way of doing things, in that it offers a progressive dinner. Diners start with an appetizer at one restaurant, visit a second restaurant for the main course, then proceed to a third restaurant for dessert.
This year, the second year the Downtown Skokie Merchants Collaborative has put on a restaurant week, the three restaurants, and a bar/tasting room that will offer an optional drink tasting add-on to participating diners, are all within walking distance of each other in downtown Skokie.
Diners can choose either a 5:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. time slot on most days between Jan. 23 and Feb. 7, and they’ll start at the appointed hour at Sweet Reserve Cafe and Bakery at 4845 Oakton Street for an appetizer, proceed to Libertad, 7931 Lincoln Ave., across from the Skokie Theater, for the main course, and then finish at Kneads and Wants cafe, 8042 Lincoln Ave., for dessert, according to the downtown merchants’ website.
The progressive dinner costs $50, plus tax and gratuities, and an optional drinks add-on costs $30 and entitles the diner to a cocktail or drink at Take Flight Spirits cocktail bar, 8038 Lincoln Ave., a cocktail, wine or drink at dinner at Libertad and a coffee or tea beverage, including espresso drinks, matcha and chai, at Kneads and Wants.
Patrons may enjoy the cocktail at Take Flight Spirits prior to or after the progressive dinner, according to the merchants’ collaborative website.
Amina Saleem, director of events and communications for the downtown Skokie merchants, said diners will get a choice of appetizers, entrees and desserts, and there would be vegetarian options.
“We’re trying to encourage members of the community to get together,” with the progressive dinner, said Saleem. To that end, diners will sit at communal tables.
The merchants’ collaborative aims to foster a spirit of community with this event, Saleem said, as well as to showcase downtown merchants and promote them to the public.
Free parking is available to diners either on the street or in a public parking lot on Lincoln Avenue near Kneads and Wants Bakery, Saleem said.
