TimeLine Theatre has announced its inaugural full season in its first-ever permanent home at 5035 N. Broadway, currently under construction and slated to open with much fanfare in May. The inaugural show is Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” (May 6 to June 7).
The pivotal new slate opens in September with the world premiere of “The Birth of the Pill” by Jessica Huang, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same title by Chicago writer Jonathan Eig (“King: A Life”). To be directed by Sandra Marquez, the piece offers a historical exploration of the development of the birth control pill, focusing on activist Margaret Sanger, philanthropist Katharine McCormick, scientist Gregory Pincus and gynecologist John Rock.
The Chicago premiere of “Home, I’m Darling” by Laura Wade, follows in November. Directed by Mechelle Moe, Wade’s British comedy about a contemporary woman who adopts a 1950s lifestyle after being laid off won the 2019 Olivier Award for best new comedy.
TimeLine’s winter offering is Lloyd Suh’s “The Far Country,” a 2022 play (and a Pulitzer Prize finalist) about a family’s migration from rural China to the San Francisco Bay Area during the fraught years of the early 20th century. Helen Young directs.
Finally, the season closes in May with a rare TimeLine musical: Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” following three friends as they journey through life from optimism to disenchantment, as recently revived on Broadway with great success.
Specific dates for each production in the 2026-27 season have yet to be announced. More information on the new season and the new venue at TimeLineTheatre.com.
