An 81-year-old Evergreen Park woman was found dead of cold exposure at her home Monday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Mary Savisky’s neighbor and friend called the police for a well-being check when she did not see Savisky for several days, according to an Evergreen Park police report. Savisky lived on the 9600 block of South Francisco Avenue.

The neighbor typically shoveled Savisky’s sidewalk and became concerned when she did so and Savisky didn’t come out to say hello as she normally did, police said.

The responding officer found Savisky unresponsive in her unheated garage.

Savisky was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Monday. The medical examiner’s reported the cause of death cold exposure, with cardiovascular disease as a factor.

With the extreme cold, several warming centers have been opened at libraries and village buildings in the south suburbs. The Evergreen Park Public Library is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The Cook County courthouse in Markham is open as a 24/7 warming center until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.
